MONTH T

o eat best for a healthy heart, it is important to keep the fridge and pantry stocked with heart-healthy foods. Some of the more commonly known go-to options are fruits, vegetables, fish, and chicken. However, the supermarket aisles can get a little confusing. Knowledge is power—the key to choosing heart-healthy foods is to educate yourself about what’s good to eat, rather than what is not so good to eat. The following foods are good options that can help lower blood pressure: • Quinoa • Broccoli • Kale • White beans • Sweet potatoes • Spinach • Edamame • Pumpkin seeds • Beets

While fats have gotten a bad rap over the years, some good fats play a crucial role in supporting a heart-healthy diet. Unsaturated fats reduce the amount of bad, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol in the blood, which in turn can help lower the risk of heart disease. Take a look at some healthy fats that, in moderation, are supportive of a heart-healthy lifestyle: • Nuts and seeds • Extra-virgin olive oil • Avocados • Fatty fish (salmon, trout, tuna, etc.)

BULK Raw organic walnuts are an excellent source of omega-3 essential fatty acids. In fact, they are one of the richest food sources of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). A 2009 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition compared the effects of walnuts and fatty fish on coronary heart disease. The research found that although both of these food sources are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, walnuts were more effective at lowering LDL ("bad") cholesterol in healthy patients.
