MEGASPLICE Coupling System Basic description

MEGASPLICE Couplers system is a reinforcing bar end preparation system that is the easiest way of connecting two bars that cannot be turned. It uses the same coupler to create standard splices or position splices. The difference between both splices is limited to the length of the thread done on the bar.

Unique Features Megasplice couplers are designed to withstand a breaking load of at least equivalent to breaking load of rebar. Fast production and installation. No torque wrench is required for installations. Also available in transition form to connect bars of different diameters. Exceeds requirements of most International Codes of Practice i.e. MS 146, BS 8110, AC1318/318R, AS 3600 (Aust), DIN 1045(Ger), CAN 3-N 287 2/3 (Can), etc.

MEGASPLICE splicing system, ensures full performance splicing joint with its upset bar ends. The extended long thread provides swift installation simply by turning the coupler instead of the bar itself. MEGASPLICE couplers with its unique parallel threads, assures positive alignment locking connection thus providing load path continuity and structural integrity. MEGASPLICE coupler behaves as continuous length reinforcement bar by promoting full strength in tension, compression and stress reversals situation. MEGASPLICE coupler eliminates the tedious calculations to determine the proper lap lengths. MEGASPLICE coupler also reduces potential design errors while eliminating wastage and unnecessary rebar cost. MEGASPLICE coupler greatly reduces congestions thus maintaining healthy balanced steel to concrete ratio. This is nearly impossible with Lap splicing because of the additional rebar in the lap zone. MEGASPLICE coupler allows the use of larger diameter rebar in smaller column member resulting in a more balanced design. Smaller columns can be designed to increase maximum floor space while reducing overall cost. In watertight and water retaining structural designs, lap splices inevitably double the number of bars in the lap zone leading to unnecessary congestions and resulting in difficulties of concrete placement, (the major causes of "voids" and "Honeycombs") MEGASPLICE coupler reduces rebar congestion as explained earlier and significantly improves on concrete flow and compaction. The potentials of crack, "voids" and "Honeycombs" are eliminated.

MEGASPLICE

Basic Use Mechanical connections created by this system are a quicker, safer, cheaper and more convenient alternative to lap splicing and field butt-welding. Areas of application are splicing of reinforcing bars in columns and beams, diaphragm wall cages, and core walls, plus temporary openings, and walls. Basically they are used wherever the splicing of rebar is required.

Composition and Materials MEGASPLICE Couplers are manufactured from C45 steel which ensures that ultimate the tensile strength of the joint is greater than that of the rebar being joined. Steel used complies with ASTM A576/ AISI 1045, JIS G4051 S45C

Process Cutting

The end of the reinforcing bars are sawn square.

Cold Forging

The essence of the Upset System consists of a Patented Method of enlarging the end of the reinforcement bar by cold forging, thus increasing its core diameter.

Threading

An ISO standard metric thread is then cut.

MEGASPLICE

Technical Data MEGASPLICE couplers comply with all major building codes and standards.

Standard Splices Type A Standard MEGASPLICE splices are accomplished by use of a standard female coupler matching the thread size made on the bars. They are available in diameters 16 through 40.

Quality Assurance MEGASPLICE couplers are manufactured according to strict technical specifications and under a production process that has been certified to satisfy to the ISO 9001 quality assurance standard.

Gauge inspection on each coupler. These are tested under a regular program for compliance to ACI standard at IITM.

Position Splices Type B Safety factors On a design point of view, MEGASPLICE mechanical connections have been computed to far surpass all the requirements of relevant standards and codes. The MEGASPLICE splicing system achieves full strength of reinforcement bars grade 500 in the most demanding definition of “full strength”, which is to prove an ultimate tensile strength higher than the actual ultimate tensile strength of the bar. It does so by having a thread engagement length superior to the 0.8d of standard ISO screw and nut systems, and by not reducing the cross-section area of the bar.

When both bars would be a burden to rotate, for example because of their size, shape or length, the MEGASPLICE splice system simply extends the thread onto the ribs of the bar, thereby enabling the coupler to be fully screwed onto it. It is then unscrewed from one bar and back onto the second bar accomplishing the connection. They are available in diameters 16 through 40.

Installation The mechanical connection is achieved by screwing the coupler onto one bar, and then screwing in the second bar. Contrary to taper threads, no torque wrench is necessary, and miss-assembly by crossing threads is impossible. Assembly instructions provided must be followed. Isometric parallel threads have equal resistance in tension and compression. Therefore, the performance of the splice will not be affected if the two bars are not in butt-to-butt contact. Since the safety ratio on the thread engagement length is designed to be at least one pitch, a gap between both bars is admissible. Bars that are not properly aligned may still be connected if this misalignment is within reasonable limits, depending on the length of bar and on their stiffness. Large bars must always be properly aligned.

Transitional Splices When there is a need to splice bars of different sizes, it is allowable in most cases to reduce the size of the larger bar and to use a standard coupler. For further details contact:
