The building learns through user interaction, behaving as a collective consciousness. The learning is determined by an assessment of connections made as the building is used. Shoppers make their choices of products, and the system reinforces those connections that are made most often, linking complementary programs and expediting the shopping journey.

Illusion Bank Core Studio 2 Bank Project Prof. Cristina Goberna Spring 2013

Illusion bank Imagine a world where the bank was a service, not a necessity. What would happen if we understood everything about banking? Banks today claim to be something they are not. Banks are like Ads. Putting up a front of transparency and openness, in reality they are a confusing and disorienting system that we have become prisoners to. Once a useful necessity to keep safe treasured belongings, the bank has now become an all-controlling undefined entity in our lives and we are powerless to prevent it. My building consists of various programmatic spaces that exist in and around a central core and create two distinct circulations. The core consists of a three-storey-high ‘cylinder’, which contains alternative banking program normally unavailable to the public. It also contains luxury program like bar and gardens as a magnet for customers. These programs are visible to the public using the building, but their access is not. The logic of these access points is defined by the proverbial ‘phone booth’. The skin of this central core is perforated screen with both transparent and translucent glass behind. The building envelope is a combination of glass and adaptive skins to control natural light. This building is intended as a complex system of circulation with a hidden logic. Specific elements are not what they at first appear, and through continued use of the building one can define the logic behind it and figure out how to enter these previously inaccessible spaces. The program in the core is designed to be highly desirable to attract people to it. Through the continued use of the building, customers will eventually come across these hidden entrances and once they have access to the alternative program the bank will no longer be able to function the way it normally does.
