Attapadi the lone tribal block in Kerala is an island of backwardness in a state known for its remarkable
progressive development. The livelihood of the tribal community is solely dependent on the Forest
resources. Due to depletion of ecology and exhaustion of forest resources to satisfy the greed of the urban
society, an independent people are now surviving on government aid, branded in a frame of unskilled
laborers. This has led to the massive decline of tribal population in Attapadi.
The thesis is an attempt reframing the lost concept of self-sustaining community through rewiring the tribal
system.
