URBAN Transformation ( A case of World HERITAGE city)

Heritage city of Ahmedabad is the origin of the Urban city. It has various characteristics and varying nature in terms of city, dwelling, culture, environment. Studying this urban historic area gives opportunity to create something which can overcome the problems and enhances the area for future growth development. SANKDI SHERI one of the most valuable street known for its jewellery market is located in the middle of the historic area of Ahmedabad. One of its street leads to Manekchowk and other leads to the Raipur area. Characteristics of this street is such that it has both commercial and residential nature. Commerce of gold and silver jewellery started on the periphery of the street, which is increasing and now it is merging into the residential zone of the area. Urban insert in this area will addressed to the present problems and restrict spreading of the jewellery market into the inner residential zone.

ABOUT SITE As there is increasing commercialization in this area, addressing to the commerce can have much impact. The proposed site B.D college is located at Sankdi Sheri as it connects main road towards Astodia. Site connects both commerce zone and community zone so intervention for program canbe done addressing both zones. Site has heritage facade which can be retain giving respect to the street.

Developing program by addressing both commercial and community can fulll the vision of that area. As jewellery market is increasing, introducing jewellery making workshops can be helpful for their community in near future. People living there can also develop their skills by giving skill based education which includes workshop based on art and craft, sewing and embroidery, language skills which can become helpful to them.

URBAN Housing ( Re-thinking density and Re-developing dwellings)

Housing is the main part of the human life where it comes to the URBAN area. It is basically a shelter which is everyone’s primary need to survive. From past to present, typology of housing has evolved because of the needs, density of people, society, climate. Present condition is such that in urban areas the available ratio of land to the increasing density of people is decreasing which creates more challenges for developing housing. Thus, designers have to think vertical development as it is one of the only solution to meet this challenges. This project comprises of developing Urban housing in Pragatinagar area of Ahmedabad city. Understanding the existing housing and community living of this area and designing urban large scale and high density housing for mixed community on the basis of the rules and regulations. Whole Pragatinagar area is divided into 17 plots having areas almost equal to each other for redevelopment.

SITE DIVISION Plot is located at the edge of 40mt road and challenge was to divide 4 sites in equal sizes. Site 4

Site 3

Main aim behind dividing the sites was to keep maximum sites at inner side from the busy 40 mt road so that traffic will not interupt the sites Site 2

It will create a residential zone at inner side. Site 1

3 sites were divided at interior side of the plot and remaining site is located at frontage of 40mt road.

PLOT 10

Site Area- 5210 sqmt

Government space is given in such a way that relates with neighbour plot 9 which creates a continuous belt.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT Orientation of the building is done in such a way that is relating with the other neighbouring sites. Main concept was to create large community open space that open ups with 2 other sites. So behind this concept building mass and orientation is decided which makes continuous linear form that corresponds with other neighbouring building form. Climatic conditions can also be fulfilled by this type of orientation and organisation. Relation with the 3 sites that will open up the building at the secondary main road giving importance to its access.

Whole massing of the building is in the continuous form and to break monotonous look in volume staggering is done which can also maintain the F.S.I.

General Open spaces are kept in relating with each other so that in between road looks freely without heavy dense mass.

Intermediate gathering spaces are created at every 2 floors connecting every blocks

FORM EVOLUTION

Service core Building

Relating with the other sites and giving central open space, orientation of the building is decided opening in one direction

Linear L shape grid is created showing linear continuos form. Parallel wall system is used.

Grid of 6.5x6.5 is developed at an angle of 45 and staggering is done at inner side so that units can achieve maximum light. Staggering is done in previous linear L shape conguration to achieve light and ventilation.

6.5x6.5 grid

grid staggering

Both side staggering is developed for introducing the service core for circulation in the building.

Adjacent units are open up in massing so that more sunlight and ventilation is possible.

All the service cores for circulation is kept behind the building achieving the clear elevation of the building.

Atleast two sides are open up in massing. Central open space is created as community space.

Housing units 42 sqmt sq.mt.

84 sq.mt.

127 sq.mt.

Grid Staggering is done in such a way that atleast one side of square is open for light and ventilation.

THESIS ( SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE)

Architecture has become a part of daily life which enhances our lifestyle and provides appropriate living condition. Hence it is important to study architecture. School of Architecture imparts knowledge about the building services, sciences, old and latest technologies. Institute plays an important role in providing platform for education which increases the skills of the people who are interested in their eld. Architectural education in some ways is vastly different from other education. It focuses more on the practical learning than studying books. Creating an institute which gives knowledge of creating and understanding the relationship of society is an better way of development for the cities. The design of School of Architecture in this project focuses on the spaces that are mainly formal and informal learning that is integrated to the public space of the campus. Creating beautiful environment in the institute acts as a catalyst in making a student more creative and increase his/her imagination.

G.T.U has been allotted 100 acres of land by Government of Gujarat to develop a new technological university permanent campus.

The Master Plan shall be prepared for the maximum built up area allowable as per the local bye laws. As a guideline, an FSI of 1, Ground Coverage of 30 percent may be adopted. It is preferable to design all the buildings as high rise buildings of minimum G+6 for the Academic Buildings keeping in view the height restrictions imposed by National Building code of 30 mt. and for residential buildings 50 mt. height for Educational Institutions. All the residential building may be designed with a minimum G+10 stories height. Orientation of the buildings may be kept as per the GRIHA guidelines and the layout may be made to keep all the long faces of the building facing North and South. There are many existing trees such as Neem, Karanj, Goras ambli, Maha neem, Gando baval. Selected site for School of Architecture is located in the academics zone of the campus with the approximate building area of 6500sqmt.

DESIGN

THESIS ( SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE)

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT The basic main idea/concept in designing school of architecture is to break the types of spaces:- 1) Formal spaces 2) Informal spaces Formal spaces can have focused learning in particular xed boundary or space where education is given on collective basis. Formal spaces contribute their part as major part of the building. Worksoaces for students are included in it. Studios/workspaces should be well lit, interactive have the atmosphere which can increase learning. Informal spaces are the spaces which helps in breaking the monotonus Formal learning can be done in a fixed space such as studios, lecture room. environment of the building. Informal spaces can also help in learning to students by interaction within the students/faculties or by students. Creating such spaces can break the typical type of learning and experience of refreshment is felt. These spaces are likely to public where people of different community can exchange ideas or interact and that’s how learning can be progressed. FORMAL SPACES includes - Studios Lecture Room Library

Massing is done in a way where ground oor remains open for public where exhibition, gathering space, lecture space , multipurpose function is done. Staggering is done so that double height space is created.

Entrance have been the main part of the building as designing the large steps invites the people. As open space is in the neighbouring context , openess of the building is important.

Public spaces are created near waterbody where gathering can take place for exhibition, activities, where as formal lectures can also be converted into informal space near waterbody.

As we go to upper levels informal spaces creates balanced between formal learning spaces.

Staggered spaces thus creates building more open and related to context in nature.

Linear formal learning spaces are exploded which can create in between in formal spaces. Relationship between waterbody is also created between this Formal and Informal spaces

Spaces are staggered for creating informal spaces in between.
