Named after Krishna Rajendra Wadeyar, a former ruler of Mysore’s princely state, KR Market is one of the oldest and largest wholesale markets and is Asia’s largest flower market in Bangalore, India. It is a busy, vibrant, and crowded market in the city’s heart and comprises countless stalls and street vendors in a 3-story concrete structure erected in the 1990s. It is located adjacent to the Tipu Sultan’s Summer Palace and Bangalore fort, having a rich historical presence as a water tank in the 18th century and later as a battlefield during the Anglo-Mysore Wars before being converted into a bustling marketplace.

The metro’s onset influenced economic growth by attracting vendors and buyers, both thereby increasing the density. An ‘informal’ setting was born as vendors encroached upon the streets meant for vehicles paying illegal taxes to legal bodies. KR Market, in the recent years, has also seen a decline in the quality of public facilities with degrading pedestrian pathways, messy and filthy streets due to the absence of necessary facilities like garbage disposal, with issues like fire safety and illegal parking activities becoming a concern for the administration as well as for the stakeholders.

KR Market is the economic hub of the city, with street vending as an existing reality. Thus, any development needs to be inclusive of the vendors, even in the planning process. This study aims to discuss a holistic approach for preserving the economic identity of KR Market while simultaneously improving the infrastructure facilities.

DESIGN INTERVENTIONS

Redesigning the junction and implementation of management strategies that promote a sense of belonging and improve the imageability of market

Connecting the surrounding transport hubs to the main market via overhead bridges to improve pedestrian connectivity. (Pedestrian safety, traffic decongestion, wayfinding, civic infrastructure) Create a recreational zone for vendors and customers, pedestrianization, green interactive spaces,

Streetscaping, Interactive Public Spaces, Vendor Infrastructure provision, Signage and Wayfinding, Reconfiguration of circulation, Tactical Urbanism Restructuring the Junction, Traffic Management Strategies (Rearrangement of circulation, Street Utilities, Safety and Surveillance, Wayfinding), Optimal utilization of space

Streetscaping, Pedestrianization, Utilization of unused park area for social activities, Street amenities, Interactive spaces

Microcell, as the name suggests are the smallest unit in any organism. It is a biological unit which is home to the nucleus, protoplasm and the membrane. the cell can behave as an individually functioning organism. the concept of our project has been inspired from this term. each residential unit is considered as a microcell containing a metaphorical nucleus, protoplasm and membrane. the nucleus is the structural column which holds the cantilevered spaces. the plasma signifies the circulation. the circulation withing the space is achieved through corridors. the circulation between spaces is achieved via vacuum lift at one end of the unit and a staircase present outside the unit. the membrane is unused cargo metal which is the basic material used for the walls.

Vertically space is maximum utilized by placing complementary volumes one above the other

Spaces are cantilevered reducing the number of columns, thus increasing overall clear space

cantilevered

Diminishing profile of the spaces reduces the load transferred. thus 6 columns are able to hold the entire structure increasing clear space

The site chosen for this project is in Manipal, a urban student hub in Karnataka, India. the target audience of this project are Manipal University college students and faculty members. objectives of this project are: • • • •

Cost effective: the students can share the stay price and thus will it be a boon for their pocket. Increased work efficiency: the students of the same branch can stay together and thus can help each other The students willing to shift out from college hostels can find flatmates easily. The privacy of students is not compromised
