THE VAULT SJK Architects | 2018 Design and visual concept for a tasting studio called The Vault. “It is not a bar. It is a mixology theatre/lab and community space.” The Vault as a brand, “offers a never before curated collection of artisanal whiskies, rums, tequilas, cognacs, gins and other spirits.” The materiality of the space took shape with a black terrazzo floor with copper spacers, a fluted copper bar counter with a wooden top, sculptural lighting, and charcoal walls.

HOTEL AT BODHGAYA SJK Architects | 2018 Gaya, Bihar 80 keys 70,000 sq. ft. Interior Design and Integration “Bodhgaya is where the Buddha is deemed to have received enlightenment. It is perhaps one of the holiest and oldest sites of pilgrimage for the Buddhist world. This context as well as the skills and materials relevant to the area informed our design for this hotel, which makes extensive use of brick – a cottage industry that has remained active in the area over the last 2000 years. The vocabulary of the building, using the craftsmanship of brick vaults, pillars and architraves also attempts to convey the emotions that most embody the Buddhist practice – wisdom, courage, compassion, forbearance and perseverance. The interiors reflect Buddhist symbology, motifs and colours through various mediums and surfaces.

HOUSE IN A MANGO ORCHARD SJK Architects | 2018-2020 Bhisarai, Alibaug 22,000 sq.ft. Design, Integration and Execution Amidst streams flowing down from the gentle hills of Alibaug, lies a multi-family weekend home in a lush 8 acre mango orchard. The language of the building takes shape through carefully articulated elements, which interact with the surrounding orchard without disturbing the existing flora and fauna. Deep overhangs, Jharokhas, terraces and courtyards define the grammar of the house. From architectural elements to internal finishes, the simple design allows the trees to remain the protagonist on site. With pathways and plinths weaving between the trees, seamless glass walls and wooden doors, each pod appears as if it grew with the orchard.

“The Mehrangarh Fort has a unique position as a contemporary public space. It has transformed itself over the years into a repository of information and cultural exchange. The location and the program offered a quiet but dynamic opportunity to gently infuse the fort with more possibilities for public involvement. The building would sit immersed within the existing walls- and open itself to the possibilities of discovery and cross-pollination.”

MEMOIRS IN CLAY Part of a group art show curated by Ben Gonthier at the Dhal ni Pol Festival 2019 | Ahmedabad Pencil on paper, terracotta, ink on paper Dhal ni Pol is revealed part by part through geometries and abstracted elements. From chowkdis (a platform outside the house typically used to wash clothes, and vessels) and oatlas (verandah), to courtyards and brackets, each element leaves its own trace in one’s memory of the Pol. The sculptures and drawings chronicle one’s account of walking through a multitude of experiences lived and emotions felt. They are unique, but yet familiar. Each architectural element has its own place in the Pol; and lies in the midst of it, visually and culturally embedded. The terracotta sculptures are created on site, and draw from the Pol’s contrasts, conflicts and characteristics.
