REDEFINE SEMINARY

In order to remain at the forefront of Christian

theological education for over 165 years, GarrettEvangelical Theological Seminary continually redefines how best to prepare students for ministry in today’s Church, academy, and world. As a result, we offer rigorous, intellectually challenging academics paired with a commitment to intentional spiritual formation that trains the mind, body, and spirit. Through our newly revised and diverse curriculum taught by our distinguished faculty and prominent practitioners, you will be stretched theologically, exposed to new models in ministry, and equipped to live out your call in a variety of settings. Through the merger of three institutions over the course of its 165-year old history, Garrett-Evangelical brings together the best of progressive and evangelical values: critical and creative reasoning, evangelical commitment to the good news of Jesus Christ, and prophetic participation in society. With these values as our guide, we prepare our graduates to thrive as public theologians and to bring the resources of our faith to the public square with concern for “the common good.” This kind of collaboration with others for the wellbeing of all increases our impact on issues of homelessness, violence in our communities, poverty, hunger, unemployment, immigration justice, health care, sustainability of our environment, access to quality education, and so much more. Located in the heart of Northwestern University and in the Chicago area, Garrett-Evangelical is truly a world-class place for those preparing to be pastors, deacons, chaplains, educators, scholars, counselors, musicians and more. Come and see—and we believe you will recognize how good it is to be a part of this community. If you want to know more about this exceptional theological school, I would encourage you to visit us both online—Garrett.edu—and in person. To schedule your campus visit, contact us today at 847.866.3945 or send an e-mail to GetAdmitted@Garrett.edu. Welcome!

REDEFINE CALLING

All of us are called to some form of ministry, but figuring out what that

looks like can be a challenge, especially in our ever-changing world. At Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary we help students think creatively about their calling so that they can transform the world - which is why our students end up serving in such a wide variety of settings after graduation. So whether you’re discerning your call through what you learn in the classroom, engaging your calling in one of our many unique field placements, or simply bouncing ideas off of classmates over dinner, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to discern what God has called you to do and then act on it.

What makes you come alive?

“ “

Garrett-Evangelical is not only a theological school, but a community of faith that challenged me academically, developed my pastoral identity, fostered my spiritual formation, and nurtured my call to ministry. -Stanley Giles, G-ETS 2016 Garrett-Evangelical has equipped me to carry out transformative organizing, where the wider community is healed and transformed by the process itself; where all are empowered to employ radical imagination and courageous hope in order to manifest the reign of God on earth. -Maria Salazar, Current Student

I chose Garrett-Evangelical because I knew I would be pushed and challenged. I want to be ready to serve as a pastor for the next 30-35 years, and I felt confident that I would receive the tools I need at Garrett-Evangelical. -Joseph Sanford, Current Student

REDEFINE EVANGELICAL How do you connect your faith with the world around you?

We know that evangelical was derived

from the Greek word εὐαγγέλιον which means “gospel” or “good news.” We also know that evangelical in our current culture has become a loaded term. So, what does it mean that we are GarrettEvangelical Theological Seminary? It means we actively resist disconnecting our evangelical commitment and prophetic participation in society, as we seek to teach, learn, embody, and declare the good news. Believing that love of God is always linked to love of neighbor, we are committed to seeking justice and renewal for all persons and for creation itself. This is why we are engaged in the work of Black Lives Matter, LGBTQ+ inclusivity, environmental sustainability, child advocacy, alleviating homelessness, poverty, hunger, and unemployment, among many other social matters. It means we are born out of the merger of the Methodist Episcopal Church and the Evangelical United Brethren Church which formed The United Methodist Church in 1968. It means that our core commitments of critical and creative reason, evangelical commitment, and prophetic participation in society continue to inform who we are just as they did when John Dempster, the first president of Garrett, traveled to Washington to urge President Lincoln to free the slaves; or when Lucy Rider Meyer trained women to serve in the heart of Chicago in a time of immense social upheaval; or when, in the early 1970’s, we founded the Center for the Church and the Black Experience.

It means Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary embodies the best of progressive and evangelical values to prepare you for a variety of ministry settings to meet the needs of our world.

Master of Arts in Music Ministry I chose Garrett-Evangelical because of its extramusical degree requirements. This seemingly extraneous coursework is serving me well as a worship leader, which I am finding requires so much more than just the ability to play my instrument well. My seminary training allows me to better answer job demands like providing pastoral care, creating collaborative church programming, and even occasionally preaching! Brielle Ocott Master of Arts in Music Ministry ‘13

The Master of Arts in Music Ministry (MAMM) program prepares you for both leadership in the worship life of a congregation and in the use of music as a form of ministry outside of the church. Though similar to Master of Sacred Music programs, the MAMM is distinguished by its focus on theological formation and ministry. You will study the role music has in the liturgy and life of a congregation, as well as the history, theory, and practice of music to prepare you for ministry.

V

Redefining Music Ministry Our Master of Arts in Music Ministry does more than simply hone musical talent. It integrates theological education, leadership formation, and sacred music to equip students for both leadership in the worship life of a congregation and in the use of music as a form of ministry outside of the church.

Organ Performance Concentration The organ is a time-honored and cherished instrument. Its sacred music has stirred hearts and souls for centuries and continues to do so today in churches across the world. Recognizing the need to train talented organists, the Master

Community Life

A seminary education is so much more than coursework. Christian leadership is also formed through community worship and fellowship, small group discipleship, student organizations, and prayer groups that nurture the mind, body, and spirit. At Garrett-Evangelical, community life is integral to the formation of seminarians.

V

Worship The chapel ministry at Garrett-Evangelical provides opportunities to praise and worship God, to grow spiritually, and to learn together about the ministries of preaching and liturgical studies. Our Community Worship and Communal Prayer services are times when faculty, students, staff, and family members affirm together that we are an authentic and prophetic community of faith.
