HEAVEN Space + Emergence Heaven is an installation intended to create a heavenly experience, where one could get away from the stresses and problems experienced within everyday life. It emphasizes the idea of comfort that a person would feel within the space—the bedroom. The installation is focused mainly on the bed as a place where one rests, finds peace, and can unwind. The goal of the installation was to create the illusion that the bed is floating in air within the clouds as a way of examining life from a higher perspective. Instructor: Kim Wiese Duration: November 10 - December 18, 2017

FOR M D E V E LO P M E N T To better understand the spatiality and nature of the existing space, a photo joiner and draft of the room had to be done. From research, heaven is seen as a place where all things are new—there are no tears of pain and there is perfect peace. By taking inspiration from artists such as Tomas Saraceno, Charles Patillion, Kohei Nawa and Caitlind Brown, clouds became the main feature of the installation as it symbolizes clear thinking, emotional purity, and the gateways to heaven. Clouds are also ephemeral, it is constantly moving, short-lived, and leave no trace; a metaphor for problem’s to disappear.

Tissue Paper
Batting
The crumpled tissue paper helped to define textures and provide a design quality. The problem with this material was that it ripped easily.
First experimented with batting to try to create realisticlooking clouds. It could not hold the cloud’s form and did not have a design quality to it.
Final Model 5
PR O C E SS
To make the clouds, a wire frame first had to be constructed. This helped shape and hold the cloud’s form. After, the frame was wrapped with interfacing and white kraft paper and was stapled inside to create the crumpled effect. Warm string lights were then wrapped around the wire so that the lighting would be distributed inside the clouds. When lit, the crumpled effect creates shadows and emphasizes different textures that are similar to real clouds.
6
S E T T I N G UP T HE IN STA LLAT IO N Cumulus and stratus clouds were the chosen clouds to be in the installation as cumulus clouds only appear during sunny days and stratus clouds appear in the sky like blankets of clouds. The warm lighting in the installation promotes relaxation, helping to achieve a comfortable atmosphere. In the installation, the size and number of clouds were at random as clouds in real life do not have a definite size or number. However, the clouds were carefully placed within the space to achieve the ethereal-like quality with some on the ground, at head-level and on the ceiling. Lights were also placed surrounding the bed to achieve the illusion that it is floating high in the air.
7
8
EX PER I EN CE
The installation generates a calming atmosphere after a long day. Waking up, the clouds above the bed makes the viewer stare at the installation and contemplate on life. As the heater turns on, the clouds produce a movement that are similar to real clouds.
9
The flipbook provides viewers an immersive cinematic experience. Comprised of 60 images, the flipbook moves the viewer through the space, showings its context and the view of the installation from below.

CUENCA RESIDENCE Live The second level of 258 Burnell St. will be a living space that enables the chef, Shane, to focus on her hobbies, unwind from work, and relax with family, friends, and her dog, Kiki. The open concept first level will act as a semi-private space where Shane will entertain guests. The second level will serve as a private space for Shane and Kiki. Intended to have a relaxed industrial atmosphere, the space will use natural colours with black accent metals and rustic wood floors throughout the space. Furthermore, light oak beams on the ceiling will add warmth to the space, and other features like reclaimed wood surfaces, exposed brick, barn doors, black steel pipes, concrete tiles, and ship lap will also achieve the intended look. Instructor: Cynthia Karpan Duration: October 25 - November 20, 2018
14
FINAL SUBMISSION The window sill in the living room will be utilized as a specific space for the dog to look out into and sleep on. The space will also feature a loft-style bedroom which is visible from the living space.

FAUM EX . FAUM at the Market Lands Located in the heart of the Exchange District, the Market Lands construction in 2020 will be a unique place where creativity and making connections with people will prosper. The Market Lands will “draw experience from the diverse communities that surround the site” and will include a residential building, a cultural center, a public square, and an entirely glass-covered market positioned on the Old Market Square location enlivening the area that it is in. Inhabiting the Market Lands, FAUM EX is a design centre that intends on showcasing student FAUM works and bringing international design to Manitoba. The facility will be an inviting space designed to promote exploration— a journey of exploration throughout the facility, exploring the potential of digital technology to learn about design, and exploring the potential of new connections and relationships with local and international designers. Instructor: Nancy Maruca, Jac Comeau & Kelli Johnson Duration: September - December 2019

Using mainly digital methods in hosting exhibitions, lectures, workshops, and events, FAUM EX. serves as the missing link in showing Manitoba that local design can meet with evolving international designs and technology. This will stimulate new conversations and will provide the public with a new experience in approaching cultural issues and design solutions. Light finishes with earth-toned colour accents will be used, taking users through a playful exploration activity. It will utilize circulation as a tool for users to think and take an adventure, interactive walls to stimulate creativity, manipulation of scale and the use of sensorial devices to generate shared to intimate immerse experiences, and the integration of surroundings and different settings to foster ideas, inspirations, and connections. Furthermore, the space will express loose forms, conveying the harmony of local and international design as well as the freedom in design and exploration.

UNVEILING THE NOSTALGIA Co-working space 226 Main will be a co-working space for creative individuals in the film industry that aims to encourage users to unveil the nostalgia and reflect on the character of the past; the building, the site, and the reflection of the individual. Users will embark on the layering of the past and the narrative to reflect on their growth as an individual in the film industry with the intent of facilitating collaborations, new connections, and exchange of ideas to help one another reach their full potential. Instructor: Nicolette Layne & Kelli Johnson Duration: September - December 2019
40
SIT E ANA LYS I S Inspired by the history and telling the narrative of the site, the site analysis plates convey a vintage and film-like atmosphere. The image plates were captured through a video with members in the film industry as the chosen users for the space.
41
P O ST ER The poster is a series of image transparencies layered to portray the layering of the past and the narrative.
42
FO R M D E V E LO P M E N T The form was developed through the transparencies. The layering of the narrative and history allowed for the creation of an image. With this, the transparencies can be utilized as a spatial organization tool with the intent of encouraging users to unveil the nostalgia and reflect on the character of the past.

D E SIGN INT E NT The design intent for the interior was to create a warm, rustic, but professional co-working space. As members of the film industry tend to be away from home, users will get a sense of the coziness and warmth that they long from a home environment. This is done by using the existing elements of the building, such as brick, in combination with wood, concrete, and metal to add a welcoming, futuristic, and industrial edge to the space; a layering of the past, the narrative, and the future. CO NC E P T UA L WORK The project began with answering the question of “what is considered to be the cultural significance of media arts? With that, the cultural significance of media arts is that it allows for a reflection of the self done through experiences and collaboration. This kind of art helps with the formation of new connections with diverse disciplines to reach a broader audience.box create a lively and fun experience to distort how people will see others. From there, students were required to develop an installation using a combination of digital and analog methods that answers the question. The developed installation allows for a new and artistic means of communication online. Mirrors were chosen to represent one’s self reflection and were shattered to represent a new dimension of reflecting oneself, much like how technology can distort the way people see themselves and others. In combination with the use of mirrors, the use of a webcam and projection creates a collaborative experience to form a connection with a broader audience. Pull-buttons attached to lines at the top of the box create a lively and fun experience to distort how people will see others.

DE S I G N I N TEN T The design intent for the interior was to provide a comfortable and interactive environment where the space will merge boundaries between educators, emerging artists, and professionals. This will allow for opportunities of interaction to encourage discussion and dissemination of ideas. With this, amenities are placed close to public activities such as the café and lounge. The main level is mainly for assembly, and public amenities. The second level, on the other hand, is where the production and offices take place. The space will portray a raw yet refined aesthetic utilizing raw materials, symbolizing one’s raw quality while searching for their identity. Throughout the whole facility, the floor, wall, and ceiling detail link together acting as a wayfinding tool to encourage exploration.
66
MAT E RI A LS , F UR N I TUR E & L I GH TING The space mainly uses wood such as oak along with light finishes and wooden furniture to provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The use of wood throughout also expresses the users’ raw quality. In addition, 6500k colour temperature of lighting was used to achieve a bright working space.
