Wilson paces Bahamas past Jamaica in Pool A opener
WILLEMSTAD, CURACAO- December 30: Team captain Prince’tanique led a balance Bahamas attack with 11 points as they registered a straight sets victory over an out-of-sync Jamaica in the opening match of the NORCECA Group A 2014 FIVB Men’s World Championship qualifiers at the International School of Curacao, Willemstad, on Saturday morning. Wilson had eight spikes and two blocks in his tally while Renaldo Knowles and Tony Simon added eight points each, and Byron Ferguson and Shedrick Forbes, six apiece as the recently crowned Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association champions, picked up from where they left off in St Croix, US Virgin Islands in July by beating the Dellan Brown-led Jamaica, 25-15, 2514, 28-26 in 70 minutes in front of a lively and appreciative audience. For the Bahamians it was an overall solid display as they looked the more aggressive of both teams and dominated their opponents on blocks 8-3 while both teams were even in service aces at 4-4. On the other hand, Jamaica, fourth placed finishers at the CAZOVA tournament were slow out of the starting blocks and despite dominating on spikes, 34-30 proved to be no match for the Bahamians. For Jamaica which committed 36 errors to basically hand its rivals victory, Ryck Webb had a match high 14 points, inclusive of 10 spikes, two blocks and two service aces each, while Delford Morgan chipped in with 12, Conaradio Taylor eight and Brown, six. Commenting after the loss, a disappointed Brown said his team strayed from their tactics for the match totally and did not play to their true potential. “Congrats to Bahamas, they are the top ranked Caribbean team at present and during our pre-match talk we planned for them, but we did not stick to our game plan and did not execute well at all. “For the first two sets we were not serving, passing, defending or playing well, however in the third set we started to get it together and had a good lead. “But against a team like Bahamas, you have to maintain that advantage once you have it, but we were not able too.
“All in all it was our first match and we are glad that we started with a tough match and now we are looking at our performances getting better and hopefully we will meet again in the final. Winning captain Wilson was a man of few words and said it was great for his team to get the first match jitters out of the way with a win against a tough team. However, Wilson was quick to note his team did not play to its full potential and hopefully over the next three matches they will be able to improve match by match. Jamaica coach, Steve Davis despite the straight sets loss said he was not too disheartened by the performance of his players. “The only way from here is upward in terms of our performance. Wed did not play to our normal standard and credit to Bahamas who were much calmer in tense situations and executed well. Raymond Wilson, coach of Bahamas and also the father of Prince’tanique was happy to get the first match out of the way against what he described as a very tough opponent. He added, “It good that we started with Jamaica as they are always a tough team to play. This will set the stage for our players as we want to play with a lot of consistency. “I believe the team that limits its number of mistakes and play with the most consistency over the two days of competition will come out on top and that is something we intend on achieving. In Saturday’s second session, Bahamas faces host Curacao from 8pm while Jamaica and Martinique meet from 6pm. On Sunday in the morning session, the final round of preliminary matches, Bahamas plays Martinique from 9am followed by Jamaica and Curacao ahead of the third place match and gold medal contest in the afternoon. At the end of the tournament, the top three teams will advance to the second round of qualifiers which begin next year.
Colina steers host Curacao home in five sets
WILLEMSTAD, CURACAO, December 30: Darwin Colina notched a tournament-high 30 points to lead four players in double-digit scoring as host Curacao withstood a strong fight back from Martinique for a thrilling five set win in their curtain raiser on the opening morning of the NORCECA Group A 2014 FIVB Men’s World Championship qualifiers at the International School of Curacao on Saturday. Included in Colina’s tally was 24 spikes and two service aces, while captain Ebram Raphael got 15, Raygid Isenia 14 and veteran Gilbert Poulina, 12 as the Dutch-speaking islands survived an intense examination to come away with a 25-18, 25-20, 23-25, 20-25, 15-13 victory in two hours, 24 minutes. Despite the encounter going five sets, Curacao which missed the CAZOVA tournament due to financial difficulties and was playing in first international tournament for a while outscored its opponent on spikes, 59-54, and blocks, 16-11 while the visitors had a slim 7-6 advantage on service aces. For Martinique, seventh at the CAZOVA Championship, and fielding no fewer than six new players from that tournament, captain David Lefaivre had the hot hand with 17 points, while Gregory Alpha got 16, Aymeric Christine 15 and Bruno Eniona, ten. Speaking after the match, a visibly unhappy Lefaivre said his team had a great chance to win the match after a slow start but made too many errors in the end. “We started off slowly and fell behind and then we got back into the match by winning the next two sets, but then in the final set we made too many mistakes," added Lefaivre. Raphael, meanwhile said he could not have asked for a bigger effort from his players in their opening match. “We knew it was going to be a tough match against Martinique and we started well but then lost our concentration. Luckily for us we regained focus in the fifth set and got the win." Erialc Eddy, Martinique’s coach echoed the views of his captain saying his team made too many unforced errors while also taking too much time to settle. “We did not started as we would have liked too and this caused us to take a lot of time to find our cohesion. We managed to get some consistency in the third and fourth sets, but in the end it was not enough.
Hubert Petronia, coach of the host Curacao while happy with the win said his team needed to improve as well. “For us to get the win in our first match was good but after the first two sets, our game fell down before we managed to get back some cohesion in the fourth set. “This set us up nicely for the fifth and deciding set and we now have to continue to improve in all our other matches if we are to achieve our goal. “We started off with a lot of energy and then it went, but we need to be consistent throughout the match," said Petronia.
Jamaica rallies past Martinique for first win
WILLEMSTAD, CURACAO, December 30: Team captain Dellan Brown led four of his team-mates in double-figure scoring as Jamaica rebounded from its loss against Bahamas to rally past Martinique in four sets in the NORCECA Group A 2014 FIVB Men’s World Championship qualifiers at the International School of Curacao, Willamstad, on Saturday night. Brown topscored with 18 points, 15 of which were spikes while Ryck Webb contributed 17, Delford Morgan 16 and Alwayne Easy 12 for Jamaica to overcome a first set deficit for a 19-25, 2516, 25-20, 25-16 victory, in 85 minutes. The win kept Jamaica chances of a top two finish and a spot in the gold medal match on Sunday night alive. The Jamaicans who were off to yet another slow start were the dominant team at the net, 55-39 on spikes and 13-5 on blocks while the fatigued Martiniquans, still reeling from their five-set loss to Curacao in the morning session, led 3-2 on service aces. Gregory Alpha led the Martinique attack with 18 points and captain, David Lafaivre got 13 in the loss, which puts his team in a must win encounter with pre-tournament favourites Bahamas on Sunday morning if it is to have chance at the gold medal. Commenting after the loss, Lafaivre said after playing the first match against Curacao which went to five sets his team was confident of doing well against Jamaica, but they were not ready physically. “The match started out well for us and we were able to take the first set, but after that we could not maintain the same level of physical play and came out second best in the end.” An elated Brown, captain of the Jamaicans said his team was somewhat surprised by the start that Martinique got in the match but was able to recover after that. “I was a bit disappointed in the way we played during the first set but during the break we told the guys to settle down and even though we are still not playing to our full potential we played consistently enough to come back and win the match. “We are improving with every match and in the final match tomorrow against Curacao we are also hoping to play much better and get to the final, added Brown.
Martinique’s coach Erialc Eddy echoed the sentiments of his captain and agreed that his team was not up to scratch physically. “We have a match tomorrow against Bahamas and for us we must forget these first two matches we have played and concentrate on what is to come. A relieved Steve Davis, coach of the victorious Jamaicans while not totally happy with his team’s display said, ‘The guys did what was necessary for us to get the tonight. “In the second set we were a lot more selective after reviewing the first set. We observed that we had a chance to dominate the middle with our taller players and we did that, but my younger players are yet to show their full potential and once they do that we can get to the final and even take the top spot. In Saturday’s second session final match, Bahamas and host Curacao, both victorious in their openers meet for the right to stay unbeaten.
Bahamas withstands Curacao test to stay unbeaten
WILLEMSTED, CURACAO, December 1: Prince’tanique Wilson once again led from the front as Bahamas withstood a stern test from host country Curacao to register a four-set win in a clash of unbeaten teams to close out the first day in the NORCECA Group A 2014 FIVB Men’s World Championship qualifiers at the International School of Curacao, Willemsted, on Saturday night. Wilson tallied 21 points which included 15 spikes and five blocks while Renaldo Knowles got 13, Shedrick Forbes added 12 and Endrierich Rahming 11, as the balanced attacked overwhelmed a spirited Curacao which was backed by a lively home crowd, 25-27, 25-18, 28-26, 25-17 in one hour, 45 minutes. The closeness of the encounter was even reflected on the statistics sheets with the Bahamians, recent winners of the Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association Championship in US Virgin Islands, St Croix, having a slight edge in spikes, 52-46; blocks 10-8 and service aces, 7-6 while it was Curacao who led on errors, 34-28, something the Bahamians would be happy about. For Curacao Captain Ebram Raphael was the best scorer with 14, Raygid Isenia and Darwin Colina got 12 each, and veteran Gilbert Poulina, 11. With the win, Bahamas improved to nine points, five clear of Curacao and Jamaica to be certain of playing in the gold medal match while Martinique is bottom of the four-team table with three points ahead of Sunday’s final round of preliminary matches. The win also ensured Bahamas as one of the three teams to qualify from the group for the second round of qualifiers next year. Speaking after the match, Curacao captain Raphael said the match was a very good good and well played by both teams, but unfortunately his team was beaten. “The level of the match was a very high one but our team seems to have a problem with our concentration as we tend to make too many errors when the matches are close or when we are trying to play catch up. So we need to execute our points well, focus a lot more and get it right for the next match which we must win. Wilson, captain of the Bahamian squad said his team expected a tough fight from Curacao coming into the match and he was very happy they came away with another win. Wilson also felt his team showed a lot more composure and never got anxious when the sets were very close, something he felt played a key role in their win in the end.
Curacao coach, Hubert Petronia was also pleased with the way his team played even though they were second best on the night. “We cannot be disappointed one bit by the way we played and we must look forward to our next match tomorrow which we have to win.” Raymond Wilson, coach of Bahamas and Prince’tanique's dad said he also anticipated a good match with Curacao. They (Bahamas) have good players and from what we have seen in the tournament so far they plan well. We had to stay focus at all times and maintain our composure throughout. So we congratulate them (Curacao) on a great effort but I think our consistency during the match is what made the difference in the end.
