Dominica edges St. Martin in close 4 Setter

Coach Raymond Jacobs of St. Martin was upbeat despite the loss. “I am not disappointed with the boys as they played a good offensive game. It is just that we faltered a bit in defense and their blocking turned out to be very good. However we will tighten up and come better in our second game”, he promised. Dutch St. Maarten had outside hitter Leonardo Jeffers leading the way with 16 points while Ellis Stephan and Lincoln Arrundell chipped in with 12 and 11 points respectively.

St. Johns, Antigua, December 5, 2014- Dominica persevered over Dutch St. Maarten in a close encounter that ended with Dominica winning 3-1 (25- 23, 25- 27, 25-21 and 25 -22) in match #3 of the East Caribbean Volleyball Association Senior Men Championship. After losing their opening game to St. Lucia on opening night Dominica had to improve if they were to keep their hopes alive of a rematch with St. Lucia and they did just that. Assistant coach of the Dominica team – (Jason Francis) opined that it was an overall improvement in their play. “We definitely stepped up our game by blocking better and doing an excellent job on floor defense and I think that is what gave us the edge. We have not yet play our best game but we are growing in confidence”, he noted. The score sheet supported his views as scoring from spikes for both teams were dead even at 54 and the service points had a very slight advantage to Dominica 5-4. The main difference was the blocking where Dominica led 15-10

Dominica’s scoring was also spread around the court with four players getting into double figures. Lincoln Riviere playing the Outside Hitter position led all scorers with 19 points 17 of them coming from spikes. Middle Blocker Joseph Ronnel had 16, David Toussaint 13 and Julian Seraphin contributed 11.

French St. Martin brushes aside St. Vincent and the Grenadines

His Captain - Paul Quellery chalked it up to the fact they were now well rested and ready to play after shaking off the first day jitters. Head coach of St. Vincent and the Grenadines team – Brian Burke resigned to the fact that his team is still on the learning curve. We made far too many errors and this is largely due to the inexperience of the guys at this level. Our aim therefore is to learn and improve in every successive game”, he said

St. Johns, Antigua, December 5, 2014- French St. Martin showed little regard for the young St. Vincent and the Grenadines squad defeating them in straight sets (25- 18, 25- 23 and 26-24) in match #4 of the East Caribbean Volleyball Association Senior Men Championship. St. Martin had promised to have a much better showing in second game and they delivered. They poured in 38 spikes from 91 attempts led by the back in form Rotilio Richardson with 13 kills. At the net they got 5 effective blocks and 4 points from their serve and to top it off accepted 29 points from the opponents’ errors. Coach Theirry Stephen of French St. Martin was not overconfident after the victory. “First let me commend the guys for delivering on what we promised and this had a lot to do with executing what we practiced. However I noted a few loose ends in our play and we have to improve there”, he warned.

Cassius Franklyn of St. Vincent and the Grenadines was the highest scorer during the game with 15 points all of which came from successful Kills. For the winners Rotilio Richardson led with 14 points and he was assisted by Paul Quellery with 12. French St. Martin ended group play with one win and one loss and will now depend on the result of the other group match to position themselves for the semifinals.

St. Lucia tops Pool B after defeating Dutch St. Maarten

“We decided to use our serve as a weapon against this team and it worked in our favour. Coupled with that, our reception and passing were fair. However, I noticed that we tend to get a bit too relaxed as the games wore on and this we have to guard against”, said Ken Challery, coach of team St. Lucia. His opposite number - Raymond Jacobs rued the fact that he lost one of his key players to injury. “St. Lucia came out swinging as we expected and we tried our best to contain them. We did a better job at this in the second and third sets but we needed that extra offense in order to put points on the board and this is where we missed our opposite Riegmar Valies”, he lamented.

St. Johns, Antigua, December 5, 2014- St. Lucia made light work of team Dutch Saint Martin in their second and final match of Pool play, beating them in straight sets (25- 13, 25- 20 and 25-21) in match #5 of the East Caribbean Volleyball Association Senior Men Championship. With only three teams in each pool St. Lucia needed a second victory to take pole position and did just that in convincing fashion. They now have and automatic berth in the semifinals. Their attack started from the serve with Joseph Clercent (8 service points) and Hernesto Trim (4 service points) making it extremely difficult for their opponents. This then created some offensive opportunities that team St. Lucia took advantage of to lodge 32 points from spikes. St. Lucia dominated all the scoring categories – 32-18 in spikes, 10 -6 in blocks and 14 -2 in serves.

Captain Leonardo Jeffers was not disheartened. “St. Lucia as defending champ really tested our level and we enjoyed being competitive. However we still have a chance to qualify for the semis and by the looks of it, we may meet our main arch rival French St. Maarten. We are definitely looking forward to that”, he stated. The scoreboard reflected that Captain Leonardo Jeffers waged a solo effort with 13 points in the losing effort. No one else had double figures for St. Maarten. On the other hand, St. Lucia’s Joseph Clercent who led all scorers with 18 points had support from Middle Blocker - Hernesto Trim (13 points) and opposite Augustin Faulkner with 12 points. St. Lucia now awaits the results of the quarterfinals to determine their opponents.
