Velachery | Chennai

Activity Analysis
Velachery is a residential area in South Chennai, a metropolitan city in Tamil Nadu, India. The growth of Velachery during the last decade can be cited due to the growth of the IT sector in south Chennai. It acts as an important hub connecting the rapidly growing business class Information Technology corridor popularly called OMR; the more mature and well connected GST road and the Central Business Districts of the city, which has more relevance to the history of Chennai. Velachery as a whole draws a perfect balance between Old and New Chennai and is a phenomenon in terms of growth.
DYNAMIC PEDESTRIAN MOVEMETNS
Phoenix Junction
Velachery Junction
The plight of pedestrians is the worst as there is too little space for them to move around. Overcrowding along narrow footpaths. Difficulties in crossing the road at ground level. Poor signage, and barriers to pedestrian movement. An unwelcoming environment for the elderly and physically disabled. Safety problems in relation to traffic and in areas that are poorly lit or badly maintained. Noise and air pollution from traffic.Unattractive streets and pedestr an links which lack character, identity and comfort (shade, seating, plants etc.) The commercial establishments in velachery do not have adequate parking. which forces people to park on the main roads and by lanes, which then spills over onto the main road, choking traffic. The road has no mid block crossing/ refuge or a pedestrian grade separator and as the median is a three feet high concrete barricade, the pedestrian risks his life to cross over to the other side.

The Y- Junction Traffic Analysis
The Multi-Leg Junction Traffic Analysis
The Phoenix junction formed by the intersection of Velachery Main road and Velachery Bypass road, marks one of the entry points of Velachery. This Junction encounters moderate traffic congestion during peak hours of the day. The presence of Phoenix Market City and Gurunanak College and Gurunanak School increases its significance as well as the traffic congestion. This signalized node is often a spot of chaos due to mal function of the signals and no proper channelizing of the traffic as well as the pedestrians. Bus stops located very near to this is often the reason for slow moving traffic.
Vijaynagar node is the Zonal Centroid of Velachery, where all the three major roads - Velachery Main road, Velachery Bypass road and Velachery Tharamani road, intersect to form a multi-leg junction. This highly significant node is the central hub of “Modal Transfer as it is the only node which is connected to all the other nodes directly through all the feeder system. Thus it becomes the prime traffic (Vehicular and pedestrian) attractor and distributor. Hierarchy of modes from Public transport like Bus, mini bus, and intermediate public transports like autos and share autos, apart from the private vehicles are witnessed here

The T- Junction Traffic Analysis
The L-Junction Traffic Analysis
The node formed at the intersection of Velachery Tharamani road and annexure of Gandhi road near Tata Consultancy Services pvt.ltd is one of the main entries from the southeastern parts of the city. This is node is significant, though it is an intersection of arterial road with a collector road is due to the presence of TCS which hold about 2000 plus employees marking it as a prime traffic attractor of Velachery. The on-going canal work for storm water drain, about 20 feet wide on one side of road, takes about half the width of the arterial road decreasing the space for the ongoing traffic by half.
MRTS node is the entry point to the southern parts of the city. The T-Junction is divided into two L-Junction by railway tracks going through the Inner Ring Road. Thus there is only one-way traffic in this L-Junction and it is wide enough to handle the capacity. But the traffic congestion happens on either side of the Velachery - Tambaram overhead bridge, which is dotted by commercial establishments on either side of it is acting as a focal point for Pedestrian and encroachment thus making it difficult for the traffic to move about with ease causing congestion, thus forming a bottle neck.

Commerical Street Traffic Analysis
Foot Traffic Square Sutherland|GurunanakPedestrians
The old commercial stretch is a 20ft road, experiences congestion due to the shops established in the corner of the road, which affects the turning radius of the vehicles. The road lacks in pedestrian pathway and parking lots. This locality comprises the commercial zone of the Velachery. Because of the lack of pavements, the pedestrians tend to move along with the vehicles. And the existing pavements are encroached by vehicles, hawkers and vendors. The road is maximum used by the pedestrians rather than the vehicles. The temple in this locality is the major reason for the increasing rate of the hawkers and vendors.
The building is located in Velachery main road which is already congested. Therefore, the pedestrian traffic in the lane causes greater difficulties in vehicular movement. Pedestrian pathways are hardly seen on this lane. The same lane has other software company and that adds up the dense to the existing pedestrian traffic. Because of the fact that it’s a two-way road with inadequate width, the pedestrians in this zone are at major risk. Lack of pavements is one huge mistake in this lane, Though the width of the road is insufficient, the road is partially encroached by the informal parking of the two-wheelers.

Chennai currently has hundreds of thousands of people residing in both unrecognized and objectionable slums predominantly along the city’s three major water ways the Adyar river, Cooum river and Buckingham canal. Srinivasapuram is sited upon a narrow stretch of land south of chennai’s main marina beach, at the mouth of the adyar river Tsunami in 2004 caused wide spread devastation for many east coast communities in India, including along the thirteen districts along the Tamilnadu coastline. Srinivasapuram was one of the worst affected areas in the region with 54 lives lost and hundreds of families left homeless and is one of the most vulnerable slum communities in chennai. The slum settlement was once again severely damaged when the Adyar river flooded after a 100-year rainfall of 40cm/day
Site Plan | Srinivasapuram
In those years (1970) no informal settlements can be seen in this area, there was sufficient water supply and the sewage system was well maintained because of the less population in the area. Slum population was drastically reduced because of the construction of tenements by slum clearance board. In 1990s, fishing gradually became the main occupation and the informal settlements started to spread widely in the zone. Because of the inadequate sewage facility people started to dump the garbage in the adyar river and the community started to lose the hygiene 2006 Most of the temporary structures were rebuilt because of tsunami. Tsunami lashed out 52 lives and the informal settlements. Also many number of pukka houses were demolished. Due to this situation the record of number of temporary structures had risen up
