Where will your secret hideaway be in Cannes this year? Where is the place to be seen?

CEO, Founder at DIVE Networks

Meetings on the yachts are my favourite place to be - I have met lifetime friends at Cannes at those events. Also, Brun Restaurant has the best local seafood.

What are three key elements of an awardwinning campaign? Award-winning campaigns combine technology and design in a graceful way. They could be either a category creator, because award winners break new ground, or something that reinvents ideas to bring the best of old to new.

Last year, Cannes Lions was branded as a Creative Playground. What are your thoughts on this year’s theme, Thank You Creativity?

We owe everything interesting in life to creativity - so yes - Merci!

What’s your most memorable moment over the past few years at the festival? I’ve had so many - there is nothing like experiencing that feeling of being short-listed yourself for a campaign, and sitting next to a gold winner when they find out they have won.

What excites you about the festival, any must attend talks? I’m excited about the data / tech / ideas track for 2016. Specifically, Dana Anderson’s sessions are great inspiration due to their many brands and innovation.

How do you stay creatively inspired? What is your all-time favourite Cannes Lions winning campaign? My all-time favorite was Intel’s 2014 campaign, “Impossible” because nothing is impossible.

As a returning Cannes Lions Festival attendee, what advice do you have for first-timers? Soak it all in! Meet as many new people as you can and don’t be shy - the best in our business are all around you. Ask great questions and share your dreams.

I surround myself with people who believe they can change the world, and do. We are all a product of the people around us. My two children are the most creative people I know - their minds are constantly open to new possibilities.

What is your personal mantra in a tweet? #Bebrave, don’t waste time and shoot for the stars

With What are the three must-have items that you can’t live without at Cannes? Sunscreen, Advil, and an iron constitution.

Where will your secret hideaway be in Cannes this year? Where is the place to be seen? Sadly, my hideaway will be recovering in Toronto. Otherwise I’d be front and centre at the Opening and Closing Galas, which are THE place to be seen.

What are three key elements of an award-winning campaign? A great campaign has to have a core truth. Something universal. It needs to be a complete distillation of the brand. And it has to tie the idea to the brand indivisibly.

Last year, Cannes Lions was branded as a Creative Playground. What are your thoughts on this year’s theme, Thank You Creativity? I love it. As creative director of the visuals for this year’s Galas, we’ve taken the theme and asked 25 creative genii to help us interpret how they see the spark of inspiration. Everyone lucky enough to go to Cannes with something in the show should raise a glass to Creativity. Right now!

GARY THOMAS Creative Director, Smith As a returning Cannes Lions Festival attendee, what advice do you have for first-timers? Sleep on the return flight, and never go on a boat. Once you’re on, you aren’t getting off.

What’s your most memorable conversation over the past few years at the festival? Had an intense conversation about Borje Salming (the great Swedish defenseman of the Toronto Maple Leafs) with a Swedish creative director and his bored witless Argentine counterpart. At least I think he was bored. He might have passed out. We were having an excellent conversation nonetheless.

What excites you about the festival this year? I always try to attend as many sessions as I can. You can never get such an amazing array of creative people and try giants from all walks of life.

How do you stay creatively inspired? There’s always something new. The world is a constant fountain of new inspirations. I am never short of things that astound and amaze me.

What is your all-time favourite Cannes Lions winning campaign?

What is your personal mantra?

So many. I really loved the “Like a Girl’ campaign last year. It was such a clear and simple way to make a point. It worked globally.

If you aren’t excited and terrified at the same time, quit and work in a bank.
