A high level development schedule was created that identifies short range and long range projects based strictly on the forecast of activity and facility requirements. As a result of changes occurring in the aviation industry locally, actual activity is currently tracking slightly lower than the forecasts, especially in air cargo development. Hence, the purpose of future master plan has two clear objectives: the first one is to improve the efficiency of existing cargo facilities to meet future demands; the second one is the application of supplemental programs at cargo city to perform as a key element in Aerotropolis and then boost the airport economy.

Hartsfield – Jackson Atlanta international airport has been the world’s busiest airport by passenger traffic since 1998. It held its first ranking by both in passengers and number of flights. The Atlanta airport is a main gate to link the United States and worldwide countries. Also, a large number of flights are domestic flights from within the United States, where Atlanta serves as a major hub for traveling throughout the southeast of North America.

By introducing the IoT (Internet ofDESIGN Things) ARCH 701 STUDIO CARGO CITY and utilizing the existing railway and Marta line spare time, smart cargo facilities located in the city are proposed. Trucks can transport commodities to the smart cargo stations and have the tracking chips installed, and thus reducing the high pressure on the highway caused by cargo. Moreover, according to the forecast report, merely improving the existing facilities could only double the traffic by 2030, whereas ATL aims at 5 times more. Consequently, new industry closely related to air cargo could be great opportunity for ATL.

COMPLEX CONFIGURATION
Biomedicine industry with small volume, high value and high demands for air cargo is the most suitable program fitting into the Cargo City. Additionally, the educational and industrial bases, including the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) in Atlanta provide the substantial support for the Cargo City. Dividing the Cargo City by the noise contour, the area inside the contour is designated for industry and the area outside contour for research center. A city with pure efficiency is designed by TENANTS PLAN assembling basic company units and logistic facilities. Each unit performs as a production component. Products are directly transported to cargo facilities by multiple layered rail system. By phasing the production within every complex, the goal will be achieved by 2030. Afterwards, noise contour will be pushed towards east side because of the new runway. Thus, Cargo City would have opportunity to develop across.

Artificial is commonly understood as well-designed to serve for people, but sometimes lose the sense of friendliness to the nature. We try to combine different features of ecology, morphology, aesthetics and functionalism into one single design. At beginning, we provide a design of a prototype suits multiple places and can be easily duplicate, will this cause a sense of boredom in terms of aesthetics. Or it could be an adaptive module to change according to local environment and create a series of forms with different aesthetic features. Stockholm has remarkable territorial balance between blue, green and grey space, namely, 30% water, 30% green space and 30% urban building fabric humans, local flora and fauna, near arctic-circle climate. That is to say, to reflect this balance on design, we might need to consider the habitable spaces for other beings. Rather than a so-called well-designed building, the concept of metabolism describes a building as a live being which can grow itself by aggregation. The floating waterbus terminal combines with bicycle garage and habitats for flora and fauna, and thus enhancing the city resilience as well as providing new aesthetic experience.

600 Mass represents the convergence of clean aesthetics, forward-thinking amenities and green spaces that blur the lines between traditional indoor and outdoor environments. The client required re-design the atrium area to be a semiclosed space. After several times discussing with client, design team finally made a ‘cable and hanging system’ to cover the second floor ceiling with different sizes of fabric panels.

SWIFT TECHNOLOGY CENTER OFFICE- INTERIOR DESIGN SWIFT is a member-owned cooperative through which the financial world conducts its business operations with speed, certainty and confidence. This activity involves the secure exchange of proprietary data while ensuring its confidentiality and integrity. SWIFT Technology Center located at Manassas has over 800 employees. After extensive interviews and focus groups, it became clear to the design team that the needs of the young, academically-oriented staff we more nuanced than most office environments. The staff preferred doing much of their work in open space where they could more communicate with each other, but they also need different kinds of meeting and sitting spaces for different modes of cognitive thought.

UPENN New Campus
The City as Project
Advisor: Nathan Hume In 2006, the population of Philadelphia reached its centurial minimum, although the 20- to 34-year-olds experienced the largest increment in terms of percentage over the whole country. In addition, innovation in technology has dramatically changed the structure of industry in Philadelphia. However, the school configuration cannot respond to the change of the industry as quick as possible.
Surrounding Path
Where 20-to 34-Year-Olds Live in Philadelphia The consequence of this mismatch of the old school configuration and emergency of novel industry is the shrinking of the local job market that firms of the emerging industry could not find the talents they demand. With the boom of young adults in Philadelphia, they are facing the perennial troubled school system and the local job market lacking opportunities to career which severely degrade Philadelphia’s reputation of being a dream place to youth, and thus compel many residents, including youth, make their mind to move. And this may be one of the most significant factors make frustrated people leave the city.

Lab/Office 9AM-5:30PM Lab/Office 9AM-5:30PM Study Room/Lecture Room 9AM-9PM
One of the best way to resolve this conflict is to adjust the configuration of the university to adapt to the fast changing pace of the industry so that the demanding of the local job market can be best met. According to the official statistics, info-communication industry is experiencing the most rapid increment in terms of weight of local economy. The potential programs of such a university are supposed to emphasize on the research of cutting edge nano technology and info-communication since the corresponding industry is the pillar industry of Philadelphia. Therefore, it is a great opportunity to deploy the new campus which can both facilitate the research targeting on the new industry and accommodate more part-time/full-time students specialized in this field. The outcome will boost the economy of the Philadelphia, which will be further optimized in terms of structure. And 14 young people will be of more chance to realize their dreams here.

CONCEPT 1: Nature

LIQUID
Tensegrity INSTALLATION Advisor: Simon Kim Team Member: Shiyuan Wang
Conden Heat
In nature, a phase transition is the transformation of thermodynamic system from one state of matter to another. For instance, liquid water will be transformed into the vapor phase if temperature is sufficiently high. On the other hand, decrement of temperature or increment of pressure will cause water vapor to condense into liquid water. The phase transition of water is associated with change of the density of the matter. More precisely, molecules of the liquid water are subjected to strong hydrogen bonds which tightly bind molecules together. Evaporation will break the hydrogen bonds. Thus, molecules of the water vapor are of small mutual interaction and large inter-molecular separation.

The Mask Advisor: Katrin Mueller-Russo
1'-9 1/2"
With a rich and cultural history from China, the origin of the Chinese Opera masks is rooted in the F ancient religious shamanism.F The colorful masks first serveFas a vital role in conducting healing F rituals back in the earliest days where knowledge of medication has been limited. These masks then evolve to become more associated with the theatrical performances with its bright colors that depict the personality traits of human beings.
F
By juxtaposing the characteristics of people with basic geometrical form in mind, the exploration is to re-create how a simple geometrical shape can evolve to become a furniture piece that has characteristics or emotions shown. Gravitational force is introduced to change a cylinder form. With its two parallel bases connected by a curved surface being disturbed in its volume, this results deformation of its basic shape to become ergonomic and form a curve line that resembles the lips that belongs to the face of a Chinese Opera mask. By applying colors and facial features to the chair, it further enhances the emotions or shows the characteristics of a person, of which a Chinese Opera performer is trying to get across to the audience.
