The ‘Maker Incubator’ is a series of studios, galleries, markets and exhibition spaces to be located in and around an unused railway shed beside Auckland CBD.

Facing Daldy Street Linear Park, Mason Bros. Apartments is a predominantly residential mixed use development. These ‘budget’ apartments were designed to the minimum allowable district code sizing. Stepping down from the lobby, lit naturally by the light shafts, the kitchen/living facade rolls up (it is constructed of recycled alu minium garage doors) converting to an outdoor deck, suitable for barbecues in summer.

Beauty creates an ache for the fact that we will most likely never be able to fully understand an objects existence or creation. One cannot imagine how it is assembled, how it exists at that scale, how it could be that delicate without breaking, or how someone had the wealth, time or skill to create it hence the lack of sections or construction drawings in the presentation.
There is no beautiful object that is not affected by light. It creates colour, it highlights form, it allows for function. The lack of our own knowledge is the “sense of absence” described by Peter Zumthor. Of course art or nature is something made that must be possible I believe beauty lies in the disbelief that it is so.
