ACTIVITIES PILED AND ENTWINED

Like many other families, Afzal’s family lives on the upper-story of the building housing his confectionary store on the ground level. It is quite common for the bazaars to have mixed-use buildings with retail on the street level while the upperfloors are for a variety of other purposes. The uses for the upper-floors are typically for balakhanas (private offices), baithaks (sitting spaces), residential premises, small amounts of storage related to the shops below, religious buildings such as mosques and madrassas as well as public bath-houses and craft ateliers (AKCSP 2018).
