Track of Time

What's architecture ?

1st year architecture design studio

Design duration : 2 weeks

In modern life, our daily activities are surrounded by architecture, we live either in a place, whether it's indoor or outdoor, or the path between places. I created a tower and a plaza ,using sundial as a metaphor, to remind myself that architecture is the tracker of our behavior, our movements, and the time we live through.

02

Yin and Yang of Space

Plaster casting

Casting is a magical process, for that the liquid solidifies and captures the moment to eternality. I made an outlook of a solidness to enhance the contrast between the fluidity and the tenderness of the inner void, as a force that flowed, expanded and eventually broke the hard shell. By casting, it recorded it all.

Poem of Lines

Site interpretation and space formation

The freshman year design project is about using the elements of point, line, and plain to form a space. By interpretating an abstractive graphic composed of these elements, we are expected to create a group site model, and each person design a structure responding to the features of each topography afterwards.

1st year architecture design studio

Design duration : 3 sections, 12 weeks

I created the topography of a fan-shaped plain in the middle of a curved valley to the west, a straight cliff to the east and a river to the north. Rows of v-columns and a giant truss roofs are introduced to my structural design as they create tilted elements and mutiple levels within, forming a space full of layers climbing on the cliff and stretching to the valley.

Spiritual space

I tried to specify the social distance between people as my approach to the spiritual space. Therefore, I designed a hotel with a special check-in and staying procedure for visitors to be aware of the distance between others. It's a getaway for one's true self and no role need to be played once checked in.

2nd year architecture design studio

Design duration : 8 weeks

Site location : Hutou lake, Tainan Site area : 4800 m2

The site is located at a part of Hutou lake scenic area, with a terrain of the land stretching to the water. The interesting part of the site is that most people would follow the direction of the path and walk clockwise touring the lake. Wondering in the woods, people can sense the environment at eye level, but the treetop or the waterbed is out of people's acknowledgement.

2F Plan

I use trees as a metaphor of space: the guestrooms on the treetop level are spotless white, with an adequate space for guests to reflect on spiritual matters in solitude; the rooms on the treetrunk level are rough and gloomy, with an terrace for guests to hear blurred noise of the others.

Sections

The woods are free to be occupied by guests to read books or to have meals without being disturbed. The square down on the treeroot level provides people a chance to interact with others directly. Finally, the path towards the water grant people a lookback of the journey. After the stay, visitors can redefine what social distance mean to them.

Art's in the valley

Community center

3rd year architecture design studio

Design duration : 5 weeks

Site location : By the Tainan art museum bloc 2, Tainan Site area : 5650 m2

The site is located at West Central District of Tainan, surrounded by street blocks full of features. Temples and traditional markets create lively citizen spaces in allies, while the historical buildings and the newly-opened Tainan Art Museum nearby further attracts lots of tourists. There's also an existing building that used to be a theater in the site, containing some of the locals' memories.

Longitudinal section

I placed the volume of the community center parallel with the edges of TNAM bloc 2 building to create an valley-like space in between. Events can take place in the valley, where ramps, platforms, grand stairs with and the tall white walls are on both sides. Art is in the valley, so are other exciting activities.

Cross sections

The ground floor surrounding a courtyard consists of mainly public spaces, such as citizen classrooms, day care center and a library, which was previously a theater. On the second floor there is a restaurant, exhibition rooms and a path that links up with TNAM terrace. The art lodges are provided on the third floor, for guests who want to further engage with the commuity.

06

Vista

Co-working space

3rd year architecture design studio

Design duration : 5 weeks

Site location : Across the Spring plaza, Tainan Site area : 2255 m2

Looking back on the site from Tainan Canal, I found the composition of the scene special. The low-rise buildings are closer to the center while the taller ones are stepping back, given that there used to be an old harbor in the middle. The previous old harbor later became a massive mall of Chinatown, and then was torn down and renovated into today's sunken plaza with water and plants.

I took "perspective" as concept. Each space was initially a tube, with different size and direction depending on its function. Then, I trimmed some of the angles of the tubes to connect each other. Meanwhile the persepective of each trimmed tube changed as if the floors, walls, or ceilings were tilted or turning directions.

Cross sections

The Vista is a co-working space welcoming units related to arts and design to settle in. The regular floors function as individual studios; the multiple layered ramps function as flexible and shared space for the creators to work, collaborate, hang out, or hold events.

I hope that my design, situating in the overlap of the old horbor area and today's new city destination, can act as the attractor of creativeness, and the events that will take place here can have the glory history of the site be told.

New Surface

Hotel & Brand flagship store

The building standing on the site currently looks like a heavy wall, which blocks everything in or out the street block. Shiny and showy signboards occupied the lower part of the wall, while abandoned steel frames, dusty windows, and missing tiles can be seen on the upper part.

3rd year architecture design studio

Design duration : 8 weeks

The program of this design is a brand flagship store combined with an affiliated hotel, with the purpose of highlighting the spirit of the brand throughout the shopping process or a short-term stay of the guests. Meanwhile, the new architecture will break the previous heavy wall image and bringing a new surface to this block.

Site location : Zhongyi Minquan road intersection, Tainan Site area : 2700 m2

I studied the guestroom unit of a capsule-like shape. The curved outlook increases the surface of the volume, and the gaps between each capsule would invite sunshine, wind flow, and buzz of the city to flow through the corridor. The craftworks of the clothing brand can be demonstrated on the facade as well.

My partner and I consider the plan for the whole block to be a long-term issue, and that construction was phased. For the occasion, part of the site would be under construction, meanwhile responding to the different conditions of the previous and the upcoming plans.

The first part of the design focused on a strategy of community scale. I recorded the activity spots of the village, whether they're functional ones or potential ones. Then, I pick some location for renovation, with an expectation to create a different approach toward this village, meanwhile to last the place attachment for the locals.

The second part of the design focused on medical resources. I introduced hospital and healthcare center to the site, so that the resources and equipment can be used more flexibly and efficiently. Other space provided health education, vendor spots and meal-sharing for the village.

The center itself was composed of 3 buildings and many courtyards in between. Each bed of the wards had its own window even when the curtain was closed, letting patients always have an approach toward the outer world. The roofs were also accessible, functioning as garden, rehabilitation area, and observation deck opening 24/7.
