Southborough Lane Community Centre
Design Statement The existing Southborough Lane Church lies on a very prominent site and advertises itself to a travelling public through its distinct roof form. We feel this approach to the building form is successful and have approached the design of the new Community Centre in this way. In this way a good composition with the existing church is established. We are sparing in our use of an exciting roof form, opting to locate it over the activity hall where the increased volume and play of light are most valued. The secondary spaces are enclosed in flat roofs, which will be set to a good fall to ensure efficient rainwater run off. In its distinct roof form and rising corner the building marries, use of space, building form and its presence within the community. Within the building a sense of progression through the space is engendered through the different volumes and also through the use of rooflights and the varied play of light these provide. The ‘back of house’ accommodation is simply and elegantly planned. Rooflights are deployed to ensure all internal rooms have natural light and ventilation.
