Demonstratinghisinterestinthemass-producedimagesofpopularculture, Andy Warhol created red and white Campbell’s soup cans for over two decades, startingin1962.Theyquicklybecomehismostwell-knownemblem.Warhol attributedhisinterestinthesubjecttohisownexperienceofpost-war consumerism, remembering:‘Iusedtodrinkit.Iusedtohavethesamelunch every day, for twenty years, I guess, the same thing over and over again’.Over thecourseofhiscareer,Warholdepictedthirty-twodifferentsoupvarieties. BeefConsommé isoneoftenvarietiesinthe1968portfolio,whichdeployed screen-printingasawaytoachieveflatandhard-edgedareasofcolour–a techniquethatwasperfectlysuitedtomimickingtheuniformityofadvertising.
