Hinrichsen F11. the first true French Baedeker in original yellow Biedermeier boards 112. Rhin de Bale a Dusseldorf. Charles Baedeker, Coblentz, 1846.

£2,500 [102130] This rare early Baedeker was translated by Professor Klein from the fifth German edition published in the same year and was the second French title to be published by Baedeker. The first was published in 1832 under the title ‘Voyage du Rhin de Mayence a Cologne’. However this is considered to be the first true French Baedeker as much of the guide had been re-written. Baedeker had also introduced more town plans which include Cologne and Strassbourg. This copy is bound in the attractive yellow pictorial bindings known as Biedermeier, the period 1815-1848 is often (in German-speaking countries) referred to as the Biedermeier period in art and especially with reference to a style of furniture. The architectural and landscape designs on these bindings always represent the area covered in the Baedeker. They are considered to be highly collectible. First edition; pp. xxiv, 309, 8 plans and one general map in two parts at the rear; bound in the publisher’s original yellow pictorial biedermeier boards, slightly bumped and worn at corners; overall an excellent copy. Hinrichsen F2.

£650 [103233] This is the first of three editions written by Richard Ford. Ford’s work on Spain is considered to be one the great works on the country. In his obituary in the Times, commonly attributed to Sir W. Stirling Maxwell, it was said that ‘so great a literary achievement had never before been performed under so humble a title’. Richard Ford spent four years in Spain acquiring his extraordinary knowledge of the country by a series of long riding tours (1830-1834), having moved there because of his wife’s health. For 3 years he wintered in Seville, moving to the Alhambra in the summer (1830-4). He immersed himself in the Spanish way of life and wrote in such detail that Murray’s later editions of this title had to be abridged.
