SYNOPSIS
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT Spacewood, India’s leading manufacturer of modular furniture since 23 years has not only promise to serve quality product but also an experience to their customers. It serves different category of furniture ranging from home furniture to office solution. Spacewood evolves with the need and lifestyle of the customer. Understanding the current needs of the user and providing best solutions is the important part of designers at Spacewood. Small spaces and the challenges that come with it (in case of furniture) is a good opportunity to work on. With rapid urbanisation, there has been significant growth in the number of flats constructed in India. These covers wide range: there are flats catering to the lower middle class, the middle income groups, and the upper middle class. Rapid increase in the price of land and in construction costs, have made the flats, usually built in cooperative basis, an economical proposition, providing a large number of people, a comparatively easy method of acquiring home. Most flat owners are either small businessmen or are persons engaged in service either with the government or in industry.
6
Most flats, except those in the luxury class, are characterised by a shortage of space, and in consequence, all available space has to be made use of, in as economical a manner as possible. Space saving furniture plays a very important role here, particularly since people who invest in flats, regard furniture in some shape or form as an absolute necessity. It seems clear that if furniture can be designed as a part of a system and if it could perform more than one function, it would readily fine acceptance. I then thought most essential item of furniture – in terms of small spaces – for a living room; sofas, dining table, centre table, daybed, etc. After doing research, collecting data and carrying survey and analysis of the collected data; I came to a conclusion to work on a space - living cum dining area and design a space saving dining unit.

NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF DESIGN
The establishment of NID was a result of several forces, both global and local. The late 1950s saw a confluence of these forces, and this time would be a significant one for Indian culture and education. This was a time of reappraisal and reconstruction in a newly independent India. A young nation was confronted with the mammoth task of nation building, of balancing age old traditions with modern technology and ideas. The Modern Movement, the philosophy of Machine Aesthetics, and revolutionary experimentation in the arts, architecture and design were all taking place at the same time. There was a search for the Indian identity across all aspects of life. National Institute of Design was established in 1961, and has been a centre for design education, practice and research since then.Today the National Institute of Design is internationally acclaimed as one of the finest educational and research institutions for Industrial, Communication, Textile and IT Integrated (Experiential) Design. It is an autonomous institution under the aegis of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. NID has been declared ‘Institution of National Importance’ by the Act of Parliament, by virtue of the National Institute of Design Act 2014. It is also recognised by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Government of India as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation.

FURNITURE AND INTERIOR DESIGN
Figure 04: Opulent, a pendant lamp designed by Sharyu Ambadkar. Photograph by Abhishek Kumar Nirala.
The Discipline of Furniture and Interior Design deals with the creation and evolution of objects, structures and systems at human scale that aim to improve the quality of life in the immediate living and working environment, while looking at sustainable and innovative use of diverse materials and processes. It believes in a broad and interdisciplinary attitude for enriching the design activity and draws from experiences of Industrial and Environmental Design professions. The Programme provides an integrated approach to the design of furniture and interior objects and systems as part of one’s living and working habitat, while striving to redefine the boundaries of such elements with a systems perspective. The Furniture and Interior Design discipline encourages the students to develop a strong foundation of basics, which facilitates anticipation of the future. The institute achieves this purpose through a diverse pool of faculty who brings academic knowledge and work experience to their instruction. The programme aims to educate designers to handle all aspects of furniture design as one integrated user centric area of study; and their ability to integrate all such elements and systems into coherent wholes in various interior spatial contexts is considered to be important. Special emphasis is placed on the ability to develop self-made prototypes in order to test human and functional factors. v/s aesthetics and use of materials.

PLYWOOD
MATERIALS AND FINISHES
Figure 36
Figure 37
The MDF is a type of composite wood product. These boards are basically made out of the hardwood and softwood residuals, shavings, and chips defibrated into wood fibers; these fibers then mixed with the resins and with certain temperature and under pressure the panels are formed.
Plywood is made up of thin layers of wood bonded together with adhesive under high pressure. Each layer of wood, is usually oriented with its grain running at right angles which is also called as cross core; to the adjacent layer in order to reduce the shrinkage and improve the strength of the finished board.
Properties :
Properties :
•It has no knots and twists like wood. •Greater moisture tolerance.Does not warp, bend or change even in humid conditions. • Aesthetically pleasing. • Can be routed or molded to desired shape and form • High internal bonding, higher screw holding capacity • True wood veneers, plastics, paint, aluminum all adhere to MDF.
• It has high strength and durability. •One of the flexible material to experiment for different types of application. •Though it does not have ability to work on machine it is one of the versatile material. •It has lower aesthetic appeal as raw materi.al but it can be finished with various finishes. •It has higher screw holding capacity. • Resistant to crack, shrinkage, splitting, twisting and warping.

Particle board is an engineered wood product manufactured from wood chips, sawmill shavings, or even sawdust, and a synthetic resin or other suitable binder, which is pressed and extruded. Particle board is cheaper, denser and more uniform than conventional wood and plywood and is substituted for them when cost is more important than strength and appearance. Though it is denser than conventional wood, it is the lightest and weakest type of fiberboard. Properties. •Cheaper, denser and more uniform than solid wood or plywood • Can be painted, veneered, laminated • Different grades of particle board have different densities • Higher densities mean greater strength. • High screw holding and weight bearing capacities

INITIAL BRIEF To design a multifunctional furniture range for India. Spacewood evolves with the need and lifestyle of the customer. Understanding the current needs of the user and providing best solutions is the important part of designers at Spacewood. Small spaces and the challenges that comes with it (in case of furniture) is a good opportunity to work on. Spacewood has created a sofa cum bed called Urbano on the same brief and with the increase in demand for the multifunctional furniture; the initiation of working on this brief was taken and forwarded to me.

RESEARCH & LITERATURE
The sections deal with understanding brands, collapsibility and its principle and the daily activties done at different room at home - The brand study I did is mainly online as : 1.The local markets of Nagpur hardly have any space saving furniture since Nagpur is not a metropolitan city. 2.Spacewood is looking forward for the online buyers and sellers. 3.Most space saver furniture is sold online. 4.Photography of the products is not allowed in Nagpur’s local market unless and until you are buying or booking a product. Collapsibility was a course I did at furniture and interior department for a module of folding furniture. The understanding helped me to develop the concept and prototype.

UNDERSTANDING BRANDS The brand study is primarily done by understanding the e-tailers selling space saving furniture. The market seems to be growing well in metro cities as the space is an issue. Also the advantage of having space saver furniture is that you get more than one function as well as good materials and finishes at the same price at which one function furniture have.

COLLAPSIBILITY Collapsibility is an elementary design principle applied to a great many everyday objects, from telescope to umbrellas, newspapers to Vehetian blinds, furniture to permabulators. Collapsiblies work by adjustment, which is basic strategy for survival.
Man, himself a collapsible being, physically and psychologically, needs and wants collapsible tools.
The principle is simple : no adjustemnt, no future. Collapsibles are smart man made objects with the capacity to adjust in size to meet a practical need. Collapsibles are functional doubles with two opposite states; active and passive. Man made collapsibles dont just happen. Two conditions must be met before one is conceived and created. First, somebody must see an advantage in reducing the size of a tool when it is not in use. And second, it must be mechanically possible to reduce the size of that tool.

STRESS
FOLDING
CREASING
BELLOWS
Stress is a double principle. It implies both compression and expansion or pressure and tension.
Folding does not implies to paper. Folding generally apply to soft material, like cloth and plastic.
Instead of being randomly wrinkled, creasing is a method to fold along the preset line, to produce a neater appearance.
Bellow is use where flexible and sealed connections are needed between two planes.
When a collapsible work by stress pressurre; its stressed (compressed) state is for storage and its relaxed state is for action. Example : Sleeping bag.
This principle allow for directionless flexibility of soft material. Softness can be strength for collapsibility. Normally it folds to storage and unfold to expand.
The purpose of creases may be two fold.
Bellows may or may not a delibrate means to reduce the object for storage.
When collapsible work by stress tension; its stressed (compressed) state is for action and its relaxed state is for storage.
62
First, give an object both fold and unfold neater appearance than random folds could created. Second, creasing permits greater size reduction.
| Spacewood Furnishers Private Limited| 2018 |
The flexibility allows it to be used as a pump and make it adjustable in active use.It sometimes reduce the size for storage. But it is not necessary. A ball pump contract for function and expand back for storing air for pumping.
|Sharyu Ambadkar | Graduation Project | NID | B.Des |
ASSEMBLY
HINGING
Assembling is a time and space saving principle
Hinging is a term that covers wide range of flexible joints.
To assemble a number of separate parts into a whole and then later to dismantle that whole again into its parts for storage, is to practise a time honoured principle of collapsisbility.
Hinging generally consists of two or more metal parts while modern hinge made of single piece of plastic
The assembling products are very wide range, from industrial to everyday use to product for kids. A lot of toys are using assemble principle.
The difference between creasing and hinging is quite blurred, but architectural speaking; hinging is more popular than creasing because of structural means. The supporting structure of umbrella is hinged.
63
ROLLING
Rolling is a completely different mechanism to folding and unfolding again and again. That rules out reels of yarn but rule in reels of fishing line or hoses. It does not normally leave trace for changing of mechanism; it does not provide crease and hinging joint which means it very suitable for appearance, while you can roll from the other side.
SLIDING
Sliding expand and contract as their parts slide. It open and close to save space and sliding up to use and sliding down for storage. Sometimes product contains diminishing parts, and it is not necessarily tube shaped, which it could slide or twist into each other.
NESTING
INFLATION
FANNING
Nesting is a grouping principle. Two or more nesting objects occupy a less practical space than they do individually.
Inflation produce creative product which could be very scientifically related.
A true fan has a pivot that holds its leaves together and allows multiple leaves to be view at the same time.
To classify as a nesting object, one must have the capacity that can be occupied by another object.
Inflation trap air for floating with low density of air and air trap particles to keep warm.
Fanning has two uses one is that it could be for display and for storage.
Nesting works as negative space synergy i.e; one plus one equals one and a half.
It structure also fulfilled entertaining purpose. Inflation is sometimes not economically favorable.
CONCERTINA
Concertina have a no of equal rods connected by pivot to form a string of Xs or XXX, it could be expand and retracted by changing its angle between them. The classification between the concertina and the bellow is blurred. The musical book stand is a principle of concertina.
Rolling could save space and also for protection.

Understanding the daily activities helped me to know where a furniture (specifically) been used to a particular activity. Also understanding brands helped me to learn the functional and aesthetic part of multipurpose furniture. During this phase, i was simultaneously working on questionnaire for user study. The questions prepared were based on understanding the basis of multipurpose furniture, the choice for colour, material and finishes was Spacewood had. Also to understand the scenario of the accommodation, family structure, their space related challenges (if any) to define my brief to a specific space and furniture as per need. It is important to understand what you want to research before going out of your way to find people as well as the kind/quality of data you want to gather.

DATA COLLECTION Data collection includes sending online questionnaire forms to the user who were out of reach physically and interviewing user from the city I was working. The study was user centric. The objective of collecting data is to understand the user awareness about the space saving furniture, their needs and also understanding the number of online buyers who would be buying furniture online, the preferences they have while buying a furniture.

The analysis provide with certain common features constantly appears in flats of middle and urban income groups. It is necessary to make a note of these; since furniture designed for such flats would necessarily have to take these architectural features into account.
A BRIEF ARCHITECTURAL ANAYLSIS OF URBAN FLATS
The common characteristics noted are briefly listed here: 1. There is a common living cum dining room area, usually rectangular in shape, with doors leading to balconies and kitchen, and bedrooms. An additional door leads to hallway. 2.In case of two bedroom flats, the master bedroom usually has an attached bathroom. An additional bathroom is usually place in a passage or common area for use by visitors, guests, or members of the family not occupying the master bedroom. 3.Apart from living room balcony, there are also balconies for each bedroom, one for kitchen which serves as a place to hang washed clothes, clean dishes and store odd items.
1.The living room/dining room
ANAYLSIS OF FURNITURE REQUIREMENTS BASED ON SURVEY
Other features: Flats usually are provided with sufficient natural light, due to their layout and planning, which also allows reflected light to provide sufficient illumination indoors. Obviously furniture should not obstruct whatever light is available.

There is a need for a daybed, or convertible sofa like sofa cum bed. The corner table should have shelving which is reasonably resistant to wear and tear. The centre table should be light and easy to move. The additional single chair should match the sofas in general design. 2. Dining area The dining table should be adaptable to many uses, so that it can be used for study or ironing or as work table. It should accommodate two to four people, with ease. Various sizes should be available depending upon the families. The chairs should be equally adaptable: they should be light, easily stacked on one another and perhaps even so designed as to be hung on the wall to conserve space.
77
CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT
At spacewood , there are two different section in design department, home furniture and kitchen, my brief was lying in between both the section, and as I was working in home furniture I was very careful with ideas I was generating keeping in mind the living room space. Most metropolitan cities have people who work on all week days. Considering the amount of time spend on dining unit by all working class families and usage of it is less than the amount of space it occupies. Mainly we have three meals in a day; breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast and dinner is the only time when dining unit is fully used. Also living room is used for showcasing artefacts and crockery. Considering 1, 1.5 and 2 BHK where living and dining room is combined together; the need of space saving dining unit arises as the space is compact and many activities happens in the same space.

FURNITURE CURRENTLY IN USE IN MIDDLE INCOME FLATS
Flat residents or flat owners in the middle income groups can be divided into two broad categories: 1.Those earning from rupees 80,000 to rupees 1 lakh per month. 2.Those earning above rupees 1 lakh per month. People in the first category buy furniture at irregular intervals, and do not think of their overall requirements. The tendency among them is to buy whatever furniture is readily available in the market or as, failing this, to get it made by a local furniture dealer according to their requirements. The design in such cases is usually of a conventional nature but small changes sometimes suggested in components or details.
FINAL BRIEF To design a transformable space saving dining unit for a middle class Indian household.
Flat owners with higher incomes take more interest in details and understand better what constitute good furniture. They are more inclined to select artistic, functional and attractive furniture that looks like a part of a system. Their budget is usually adequate and they are keen to experiment with various arrangement and furniture layouts.
The living room is the most flexible room out of all the rooms in the house. We can have many activities happening at the same time. It fulfils most of the requirements for us. We can eat, relax, social interact, sit, sleep, rest, read, write, eat, play, cut vegetables, etc. With a static furniture it becomes difficult to perform different activities especially if the house is small and members in the house increases.
Even while the furniture is manufactured, these customers usually take a great deal of interest. Frequently, they order through interior decorators or even hire their own carpenters. Interior decorators provide their clients with a detailed plan, drawn up in an interesting manner, with sketches and layouts.
The soul objective of these direction is to utilise the small spaces efficiently, make functional furniture, transformable, yet aesthetically beautiful.
Generally, furniture is thought of in terms of individual pieces, like couches, tables, chairs and sofas but it is seldom visualise as a system of multifunctional pieces like sofa cum bed or wall attached tables, etc. In fact, furniture should have a direct relationship a layout of a living area and to the functions it is expected to perform. Discussions with furniture users in both categories revealed that such furniture was not really comfortable. Very often this is due to the dimensions which had not been properly worked out. Materials were not durable and soon showed signs of wear and tear.

DINING TABLE STANDARD DIMENSIONS
ERGONOMICS
The amount of space allocated to dining should be based on number of people to be served and the proper circulation space. There are no hard and fast rules about dining table dimensions - there's always flexibility to squeeze in a few more people on a special occasion. Appropriate space should be provided for storage of china and large dining articles.

How Much Room Does Everyone Need ? The dining table dimension guides are derived from the amount of space that people need at a dining table. You can think of a dining table as having two types of area – a place setting area for each person and a shared zone where the serving dishes, salt and pepper and other condiments and – if you’re looking for a bit of atmosphere - candles.

Inference: After developing the two concepts into renders; my mentor and I realised that the second concept is stronger than the first one. So I took the second concept and further decided to refine it. The refinement includes developing sketches, freezing the dimensions, material, hardware and finishes with the renders.
A crockery unit with dining flushed to the base unit in close configuration.
By pulling out the part of the centre base unit; a surface is created. Extended it as per requirment and use the unit.
The base unit has two planks on sideways which can be lift and more space is created.
These are the following points to note to refine the concept : 1. The two side flaps/planks is large in size than the width of the unit. 2. The extended planks has only one functional side. 3. The large part of extened table close to the crockery unit can’t be used; as there is no space at the other side. 96
The concept revolves around the idea of combining crockery unit and dining unit as these both furniture elements are part of living cum dining room. The crockery unit has a flushed dining unit at the base of it. When the dining unit is required, pull out the centre base unit and unfold the front plank. And pull out the leg underneath to make it stand and you get a dining table. | Spacewood Furnishers Private Limited| 2018 |

MANUFACTURING AND ASSEMBLY The process of manufacturing is handled by Production and Planning Team. After the technical drawings are made; the drawings are sent to the PPD team. The process began with selecting the raw materials, MDF and PB. MDF went through process of membrane pressing of lamination. The laminated raw material was further sent for profile wrapping, cutting, routing, and drilling. Further, the cut pieces are cleaned and sent for assembling. The assembly area is equipped with general hardware and for any specific hardware; it has to be issued from store. So all the prototype is assembled in this area and after assembling the product it is sent for quality checking. Figure 86 : Profile wrapping machine at Spacewood Furnishers Pvt. Ltd.

TAKSHEEL “Taksheel” in Hindi language mean ‘someone with strong character’. And as the name suggests, every detail in Taksheel is done while keeping its function and aesthetics part in mind. As Charles Eames said “The details are not the details. They make the design”. In Taksheel, whether look its side panels or the open shelf partition or the dining unit base side; there is design language that follows throughout. Taksheel serves multiple functions such as breakfast table, dining unit, crockery unit, study table, bar unit and many more. The unit is divided into three main sections – first, the top semi open shelf with sliding shutter plays a hide and seek role in the unit. Second, in the middle, open shelf to showcase crockeries with a movable box in centre to highlight specific crockery or artefacts or to use as wine rack. And third, the base unit with three division, a dining unit in the centre with drawer and close shelf on both the sides. The drawers are made to store spoons, forks, knifes, and other crockery in hand while having food. The dining unit has being playing the key role in the whole unit. Dining unit is foldable and hides away when not required. It is meant for nuclear families accommodating 2-3 people with sufficient space. It has a strong and sturdy foldable metal leg. Castor wheels at the base for smooth mobility and an extra storage beneath the table surface. So, introducing Taksheel which not only utilises small space efficiently, but it is also multifunctional, transformable and yet aesthetically beautiful.

DESIGN DIRECTION II
Design Brief : To design a diwan cum bed for middle class Indian household. The brief was clear as diwan has always been in Indian household so the idea is to create an extra bed when required. The owner occupies the bedroom/bedrooms, and in case of any guest who might stay at your home. There would be no space for them. Diwan can be used for sitting or lying down but to accommodate more people while take rest or sleeping diwan can be turned bed. Many furniture are already there in the market; even Spacewood have sofa cum bed, Urbano, in this range and to expand this collection; the concept was developed.

A two seater sofa
The concept revolves around the idea of comfort, utility and space saving. The divan is a common furniture found in every Indian house and to utilise the small space efficiently ; the furniture is designed.
By sliding the two armrests of the diwan in opposite direction; extra space could be created. This space could either be use as seating or table.
The space created between the two parts of the diwan can be uplifted to use as a table or divider.

INTROSPECTION
COSTING
This is the rough estimated cost of the furniture. After the prototype is made the list of material and hardware is prepared and sent to accounts department. With raw material(RM) cost of material and hardware, the cost of manufacturing(includes machine and labour cost), packaging cost (10% of total RM cost), transportation cost(rs.10/kg for truck loading) and courier charge( rupees 16/kg) and in addition add percentage of gst is added to get the total cost. Every product goes under value engineering which means a systematic method to improve the “value” of goods or products and services by using an examination of function. Value, as defined, is the ratio of function to cost. Value can therefore be manipulated by either improving the function or reducing the cost.

Spacewood, has been in the furniture business for 23 years and still growing stronger everyday and after working on graduation project with Spacewood I believe that I have grown up too. The initial days at Spacewood went by understanding overall work culture. I realised that back in NID we all are one – man army who works from initial brief to manufacturing to branding of a product where else in a company everyone works as a team with specific skills which help in the productivity of the whole system of work.
As days passed by and I interacted with more people, the complex process turned out to be much simpler. Working from scratch, helped me to understand and interact with users and professionals. It also made me learn and experience little but important things like curating props, managing photo-shoot, getting comfortable with random changes. It’s hard to put in words on the amount of love and care I received at Spacewood and appreciation for my work and the output of the project.
Working with design team and other professionals at Spacewood gave me different perspective on how user perceive design, the importance of timeline, the amount of furniture generated in a day, considering the feasibility and financial viability of an organisation.
Working in my hometown; reunited me with my scooter, made me realise the importance of weekends, witnessed the high alert due to heavy rain and still making it to office, repaired my scooter’s wheel when it got punctured coming back home and so many experiences I never thought would have happened. So with the end of this document and student life, I hope future holds many more exciting projects like this for me.

As per my analysis your product is useful in case of space saving product. And it is good initiative for today’s space management requirement. Although the cost is coming on higher side but it can be controlled via value engineering.. Overall the product is new, Good for daily use, and can enlighten your kitchen or dining area..

Overall product is very fine.
As required, here is my feedback on Crockery cum Dining Unit. ‘A stylish cooking area with a dining table and crockery cabinet placed a few steps from the kitchen island is very common in the present times.’ However, the desire to spare less space and yet receive more utility has led Ms. Sharyu to develop this more functional space saver furniture for Indian home of modern times. The cleverly designed crockery cum dinning unit will definately adapt itself effortlessly to your changing space requirements. Nicely designed and executed, the sliding shutter for semi-open storage concept is really good and helping to enhance the storage part on top. The unit is made of natural wood grain and stone/ granite surface finish that give a natural and sturdy feel to design. There is plenty of space to use small toaster, microwave oven, along with crockery, glassware, and more. Pullout tabletop can be stretched out to seat 2 or 3 people and once used, it can be folded back. Table has one sturdy foldable metal leg that provides enough leg space for dining in a group. Calling on contemporary aesthetics, this design of crockery cum dinning is a classic mix of sensible style, storage, and innovative design. However, there can be improvement in terms of functionality of sliding and folding of tabletop, different sizes and variations can be worked out. Overall, this unit is nicely designed and workable, we will take this concept for further development and improvement for mass production
First of all, I would like to congratulate you for completing your grad project with such amazing output. The product justifies being a modular furniture with its basic concept and design inputs. The basic idea with which you have started was to design multi functional product. The extensive research for the same has helped you in coming up with guidelines and ultimately getting interesting solution. The product seems to be balanced in terms of its geometry and shape and overall size keeping in mind the ergonomics. The purpose of breakfast table cum crockery unit has justified more with the play of form and function of the product with addition of mechanism. Few observations for the product; although the finished product looks perfect with the chosen wood grain and marble finish you could have provided color palette for the same which you may add to your documentary with digital images. The upper sliding shutter could have been treated more smartly to have visibility though it being crockery unit. Rest all features including the mini bar counter, foldable counter top, and two different appearance of the product makes it appealing according to customer’s perspective. Overall the product has potential to make its impact in the need of space saver furniture with the combined function it offers. Well done and great job done in terms of making of detail drawings up to its execution; the way it has been conceptualized. All the best for your future endeavors. Way to go girl.
