SOLAR DECATHLON PROPOSAL
01 LIVING DESERT THIS HOME WAS DESIGNED IN A COLLABORATIVE EFFORT AS A POTENTIAL CANDIDATE FOR TEAM UNLV TO SUBMIT INTO THE 2012 SOLAR DECATHLON HOSTED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY. THE COMPETETION CHALLENGES COLLEGIATE TEAMS TO COMBINE DESIGN EXCELLENCE WITH EFFICIENT, CREATIVE ENERGY USE, MARKET POTENTIAL, WATER EFFICIENCY AND INNOVATION. PURPOSE: TO DESIGN AN ENERGY EFFICIENT HOME RESPONDING TO AND CELEBRATING THE INHERENT QUALITIES OF THE DESERT; ENABLING THE USER TO EXPERIENCE AND INTERACT WITH THE DESERT ON A DAILY BASIS. WE DESIGNED A SIAMPLE HOME IN TWO PARTS: MAIN LIVING AND A SEPARATE STUDY ROOM SEPARATED BY A COURTYARD.
THE ROOF PLAN SHOWS THE SOLAR PANELS AND MOVING SCREEN STRUCTURE WE DESIGNED TO COVER THE COURTYARD AND LIVING AREAS. WE CREATED A SIMPLE, OPEN LAYOUT THAT COULD OPEN UP TO THE DECK, WATER FEATURE, AND THE DESERT LANDSCAPE.
screen
to shade courtyard and glazing, creating a unique natural lighting experience
photovoltaic panels to generate enough energy to power the desert house
double skin to reflect sunlight
roof pond
to lower or increase the house’s interior temperature as needed during every season.
water feature
to represent the desert’s most valued resource and contribute to the courtyard’s microclimate.
PORTLAND / GREEN PATHWAYS
A LARGE SOLAR MANUFACTURING FACILITY HAD PLANS TO MOVE INTO LAUGHLIN COULD POTENTIALLY MEAN ANOTHER HUGE BOOM IN GROWTH. IN ORDER TO FULLY TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS OPPORTUNITY, LAUGHLIN WOULD NEED TO BUILD THE PROPER INFRASTRUCTURE AND PROVIDE ENOUGH RESOURCES FOR INCOMING CONSTRUCTION WORKERS AS WELL AS RESIDENTS. A NUMBER THAT JUST MAY DOUBLE THEIR POPULATION. IN ORDER TO PREPARE, THIS STUDY PROVIDED A RESOURCE IN CHOOSING HOW LAUGHLIN DEVELOPS. BY STUDYING THE WAY OTHER CITIES HAVE SUCCESSFULY DEALT WITH A LARGE POPULATION OR MANUFACTURING BOOM, CREATED A NEW INDUSTRY TO REVITALIZE THEIR ECONOMY AND IMPLIMENTED SUSTAINABLE AND PEDESTRIAN ORIENTED DESIGN PRINCIPLES AND HOW LAUGHLIN CAN IMPLEMENT THEM.

3 COMPLETE STREET DESIGN
STREETS SHOULD ACCOMODATE MANY FUNCTIONS, INCLUDING: MULTIPLE FORMS OF TRANSIT, PEDESTRIAN AND SOCIAL GATHERING SPACE, VARIOUS FUNTIONS THAT ‘SPILL’ OUT ONTO THE STREET. ALSO IMPORTANT, IS THE INTEGRATION OF VARIOUS MIXED USE AND COMMERCIAL SERVICES WHILE ALSO ADDRESSING PARKING STRETEGIES.

FOLLOWING THE OUTER CONTOURS OF THE EXISTING COMMUNITIES, THE PATHS PROVIDE A DIRECT CONNECTION TO THE MAIN STREET AND AMENITIES NEARBY AS WELL AS PROVIDING A ‘GREENBELT BY PROTECTING THE FROM FURTHER DEVELOPMENT.
4 MINOR STREETS
MORE STREETS AND CONNECTION POINTS SHOULD BE MADE IN ORDER TO ENABLE THE OPPORTUNITY FOR SOCIAL INTERACTION AND EASY ACCESSABILITY TO IMPORTANT PLACES.

LOST CITY MUSEUM ADDITION MY ART PAVILION WAS DESIGNED TO BLEND INTO THE EXISTING LANDSCAPE, PAY HOMAGE TO THE MUSEUM’S NATIVE AMERICAN HISTORY, AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE VIEWS SURROUNDING THE MUSEUM. THE PHOTO ON THIS PAGE WAS TAKEN FROM INSIDE ONE OF THE ORIGINAL ADOBE PUEBLOS ON SITE AND PROVIDED MUCH OF THE INSPIRATION FOR MY DESIGN - THE MATERIALS, VIEWS, AND DESIGN. I CHOSE TO FOLLOW THE NATURAL CURVE OF THE HILL THE WRAPS AROUND THE MUSEUM AND CREATE A SIMPLE SPACE THAT SHOWS OFF THE OF THE LANDSCAPE AND ART WITHOUT DISRUPTING IT OR TAKING AWAY FROM THE MUSEUM.

04 CITY IMPACT CENTER RESEARCH BOOK + PROPOSAL THE CITY IMPACT CENTER IS A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION THAT PROVIDES A MULTITUDE OF SERVICES FOR LAS VEGAS TO THOSE IN NEED. THEY HELP CHILDREN WITH AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS, PROVIDE HOMELESS WITH FOOD AND EMPLOYMENT HELP, AND HOUSING FOR THE ELDERLY. A DETAILED STUDY OF THE CENTER’S NEIGHBORHOOD, NEARBY COMMUNITY SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS, HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE, AND RELEVANT ZONING AND DESIGN STANDARDS WILL ASSIST THE CENTER AND ITS BENEFICIARIES IN MAKING INFORMED DECISIONS REGARDING ITS MISSION. PURPOSE: 1. DETERMINE SPECIFIC NEEDS OF THE AREA SURROUNDING THE CITY IMPACT CENTER BY ANALYZING DATA COMPILED FROM THE US CENSUS BUREAU AND THE PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT. DEMOGRAPHIC DATA INCLUDED: INCOME, EDUCATION, POVERTY, UNEMPLOYMENT, AND HOMELESS TRENDS AND ANALYZING THE PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT INCLUDED TYPES OF RESIDENCES, SERVICES, ORGANIZATIONS AMONG OTHERS. 2. DEVELOP THE PROGRAM FOR A NEW CIC BASED OFF THE NEEDS OF THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITY AS FOUND IN OUR RESEARCH AND CREATE A CONCEPTUAL DESIGN TO PRESENT TO THE CENTER.

05 “TO CONNECT THE CITY AND CHALLENGE ITS NORMS”
URBAN • CONNECT THE CITY AT A LARGER SCALE + FOCUS ON PEDESTRIAN EXPERIENCE ENERGY • LAS VEGAS CLAIMS IT IS RUNNING ENTIRELY ON RENEWABLE ENERGY BUT ONLY A FEW SECTORS IN LAS VEGAS RUNS PURELY ON RENEWABLE ENERGY • TAKE ADVANTAGE OF LAS VEGAS’ POTENTIAL FOR GEOTHERMAL ENERGY PRODUCTION + MAKE IT A TRUE SELF-SUSTAINED CITY AGRICULTURE • MOST OF THE PRODUCE SUPPLY IN LAS VEGAS COME FROM CALIFORNIA AND ARIZONA INCREASING THE COST OF THE PRODUCT DUE TO DISTANCE AND TIME • THE CITY CAN GROW ITS OWN PRODUCE TO SUPPLY ITS CITIZENS TO CREATE A MORE SELFSUSTAINED CITY SCIENCE • BESIDES FACILITIES LIKE DRI (DESERT RESEARCH INSTITUTE) , LAS VEGAS AS A CITY DOES NOT REALLY CELEBRATE THE NEED FOR SCIENTIFIC STUDY • DRI FOCUSES MORE ON EARTH SCIENCES • HAVING A VACUUMED FACILITY CAN INCREASE THE NEED TO STUDY FUTURE SCIENCES SUCH AS DARK MATTER, QUANTUM PHYSICS, AND STUDY OF LIGHT AND SPACE • CONNECTING TO LOS ANGELES ENCOURAGES THE SHARING OF FUTURE SCIENCES EVEN MORE

WE EXPERIENCE MANY OF CLAUDE’S MEMORIES IN AN EXTREMELY DISJOINTED AND FRAGMENTED MANNER IN INTERLUDES OF SECONDS OR MINUTES. THESE EPISODES SLOWLY REVEAL HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH HIS TERMINALLY-ILL LIFE PARTNER AND HOW HER SUICIDE WAS THE CAUSE OF HIS ATTEMPTED SUICIDE AFTER REALIZING HE COULD NOT LIVE WITH OR WITHOUT HER.
