STARLINK: Satellite Internet Project

What is Starlink? Starlink is a collection of small internet satellites that orbit closer to the earth’s surface compared to large navigation and communication satellites which operate from medium earth orbit of 2,000 km to 35,000 km or the satellites in geosynchronous orbit, which operate from beyond 35,000 km.

Internet Service Due to their closer proximity to earth’s surface Starlink and other similar satellites fair better in terms of latency and interference, resulting in better internet services.

The initial plan • SpaceX's satellite internet proposal was announced in January 2015. • Though it wasn't given a name at the time, CEO Elon Musk said that the company had filed documents with international regulators to place about 4,000 satellites in low Earth orbit.

Beta testing • The beta testing of Starkink’s internet services has already started in US with assured data speeds of up to 150Mbps.

How to access it? To access the services, users require the Starlink kit, which includes a user terminal, router and mounting tripod to connect to satellites.

How Much Does It Cost? Starlink currently costs $99 a month. You’ll also have to pay a one-time $499 fee for the Starlink satellite dish and Wi-Fi router, which the company will ship to your home.

How Does Starlink Work? • It involves beaming internet data, not through cables, but via radio signals through the vacuum of space. • Ground stations on the planet broadcast the signals to satellites in orbit, which can then relay the data back to users on Earth.

How Fast Is Starlink? • Starlink is currently delivering 80Mbps to 150Mbps in download speeds and about 30Mbps in upload speeds, according to users. • Meanwhile, latency comes in at around 30 milliseconds, which is on par with ground-based internet.

Does Starlink Work in Cold Weather or the Rain? • Yes, it does. SpaceX made sure to design the Starlink satellite dish to work in wintery and wet climates by building a heater into the dish itself. As a result, the dish can melt any ice around it.

Starlink satellite: Availability in India • As per the Starlink website, the Starlink internet would reach India by next year, though the exact timeframe has not been shared. • During pre-orders, it also seems to cover major cities like Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Hyderabad, among others.
