Business in Balance? True? Or just a Juicy piece of positive rumour around the watercooler? We all want to believe business is picking up, right? Our members shared their voice and feelings about this subject in our last global SKYPE call. How about the MICE business? They are struggling in Switzerland due to the high relative value of the Swiss franc and some serious competition from the Netherlands and Austria, and, in wintertime, from Lapland. But let’s not forget safety as one of the strong benefits of the Swiss experience. China has become more expensive in recent years. Inflation is part of the reason for a downturn in business there, as well as the strong value of the local currency versus the US dollar. But hey, we all know that clients are blown away when they are able to experience the Chinese culture in person. In the Caribbean, the MICE market has dropped off heavily. The attractive US Dollar versus the EURO helped a bit but certainly not enough. The banking and pharma industry bookings have all but disappeared, but we are happy to share that new business is coming from training & coaching sessions. Morocco is sharing some good news. The country (or at least our SHARE+ partner) has hardly been affected by the Middle East unrest. A new constitution was launched, indicating a bright future for this politically and socially stable area. The request conversion is 70% of normal 4 share today | 05.2011
figures (2010), and the perspective on 2011 looks good. In the Netherlands we can say that the pharma and financial industries are not our main targets any longer. However the trend to upgrade international sales events and annual (board) meetings to a higher level is a positive side effect of shifting our focus. Never a dull moment in our industry, we have to stay tuned to each and every opportunity. So share today for the business of tomorrow! How to persuade your client? Summer holidays allowed us to explore various places so we have some inspiring event destinations to share in this issue. See for yourself on the following pages where you find some inspiring FACES, PLACES & CASES. Enjoy reading, Kim & Yolanda
SHARE+ 2012 Do you know SHARE+ membership gives concierge attention to key players of our industry? Our state-of-art and well-balanced media mix guarantees the SHARE+ partner visibility and gives them a global voice to key players in the industry. Besides they are experts in using the Social Media for spreading the word. Furthermore I am exited because I received a great lead via the latest SHARE TODAY event.” Lydia Haveman, Interreps BV, Caribbean; “The ladies from SHARE TODAY are very proactive, I personally enjoyed some great conceptual brainstorming with them. New members will certainly not be disappointed.”
And new members we have! To make the membership 2012 more attractive we changed our package to tailor-made packages for DMC’s, hotels, hotel chains and Destinations etc. This allows the future SHARE+ member to make a choice out of services that will meet her or his needs. Madeira; a sweet surprise T e x t & P hotos : Yolan d a L ogt
Completely unprepared--which is so not like me—I expected a dull island filled with golf lovers, hikers and ‘pensionadas’ only good for providing some badly needed sunshine. OOPS! How wrong I was! And how glad I am to have finally seen and experienced this beautiful, exciting island full of possibilities for the MICE* industry. Yes, even while on holiday I always keep my business eyes open. Not only did the island surprise me with its beautiful vegetation –the reason why Madeira’s nickname is ‘Flower Island’- but with its infrastructure as well–the reason why the island’s second nickname is ‘island of tunnels’! Perfect venues, picturesque villages, lovely people: what do you need more for your next event? Madeira offers the right ingredients for any and all ‘recipes’. It all starts as you approach the island by air where only the mountaintops peeking through the clouds are visible. You feel the aircraft descending; but where is the airstrip? After a few nervous moments it suddenly appears. But it is so short!! I was glad to be in a plane with good brakes. Already excited, I am ready for Madeira.
To be honest, Madeira had never been on my top 10 to-see list. But as it turned out, it was the only destination with last-minute availability, not too long a flight and able to accommodate me for a week. Perfect for a much needed rest.
The Northern and mountain regions are the perfect backdrop for adventure and teambuilding activities: imagine riding squads of mountain bikes off-road over steep ascents and descents, or a treasure hunt on foot along the oldest Levadas (open water tunnels) and mountain trails
in a remarkable evergreen landscape filled with waterfalls where you can freshen up. Not adventurous enough? Go hang-gliding, canoeing, paragliding or climbing! Of course, a simple jeep safari will give you a pretty good tour of the island as well. The scenery is impressive; you could be in the Scottish Heights, on around the corner from the Swiss Alps, or at the coastal area along the Irish cliffs. The difference? All year round mild temperatures and sunshine. Just one more good reason to put Madeira on your MICE destination list. The South is ideal for sea activities. Organize a dolphin or whale watch or have a deep-sea fishing contest. How about some fun and sun on a catamaran? You see, there are plenty of choices. And of course, if you are into golf be sure to play at a round at Palheiro Golf which provides breathtaking views of the ocean… but keep your eyes on the ball! ®

Where to stay? Some personal recommendations Most hotels are on the southern part of the island, in or near Funchal - and not without reason. As the mountains keep the clouds away, this part of the island is warmer and sunnier than the Northern half. Quinta Jardins do Lago used to be a charming family home built on the hills of Funchal in the 18th century. It’s been transformed into a classy hotel surrounded by beautiful lush gardens, which are home to Colombo, quinta’s giant tortoise! It’s a perfect hotel for small groups searching for a classic atmosphere, providing high standard food and wine, as well as being a good base for a congress or incentive. Looking for a larger hotel? Try Reid’s Palace, a historical and elegant 5-star Orient-Express hotel built on the rocks overlooking the sea and Funchal. It offers a variety of facilities for meetings, gala (themed) dinners, etc. In the small village of Ponta do Sol, high on the cliffs of Madeira, one can find the Estalagem da Ponta do Sol. This Design hotel has been done in black and white with light wood furnishings. Ideal if your group wants something different but far away from the hustle and bustle of Funchal or other attractions. However, the ultra modern Vine hotel in Funchal may cater to funkier tastes. These are just a sample of the many hotels in Madeira.

End your trip at one of the great restaurants in the old part of Funchal; like restaurant Gaviao Novo for the best fish or at Restaurante do forte. Tip: you can exclusively rent out secluded spaces of the fortress for a spectacular themed dinner! And for a special dining experience, make sure to include Villa Capriani in your itinerary. There is no better setting for an authentic Italian meal then sitting under the stars on a terrace hanging over the cliffs overlooking the ocean and Reid’s Palace. These are just some of the numerous possibilities Madeira has to offer. Discover it yourself and surprise your client. I know that I’ll be going back! √ Footnote Looking for a destination management company in Madeira? Check out Blandy Travel or Travel My Way. Space, the Next Destination… The countdown has begun! te x t Yolan d a L ogt p h otos S pace E x pe d ition C u r acao
The world is getting smaller; especially for meetings & events professionals who time and time again need to come up with a challenging destination that fits the client’s needs. Well, have you thought about space? Now there’s an idea that will knock your client out of orbit! Not only a once in a lifetime experience, but a life changing experience as well! As a little girl, daughter of an air force officer, I was long impressed by jet fighters. Once, I was even allowed to sit in one (yes; that was a long time ago!). The word ‘space’ recently crossed my path again while opening my grandpa’s old KLM suitcase. Inside was a newspaper featuring the news of Neil Armstrong’s first steps on the moon. Later, I visited the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida as well as the ESTEC Space Expo in Noordwijk (Netherlands) and once again I was fascinated by this unreachable world and all the questions that came with it; What’s out there? How does Earth look from space? Wouldn’t it be great to travel there and explore the way our ancestors once explored our planet?
SXC predicts and will facilitate the trend that takes off with the eye-catching product of space travel while simultaneously offering service for science research and education. Admiring earth’s beauty from space is a life changing experience. Therefore, being a space travel pioneer, SXC is conscious of their responsibility to the planet that is getting smaller as humanity’s development is stretching earth’s resources. Sustainability and awareness are two highly-valued topics. www.spacexc.com/press/sxc_movie.mov
This is not only a dream of mine, but of many people - a dream that can now become a reality. Space Expedition Curacao (SXC) is currently preparing for its approaching its first flight for the larger public; private organisations and persons, in January of 2014. We try and open up ‘new worlds’ every day, but now we can open up travel to the outer atmosphere! In less than 4 minutes you can see Earth as few have seen it before. Wouldn’t it be great to build your event around this “out of this world” experience? ®

Some years ago I ‘met’ Mamma Agata in the pages of Conde Nast Traveller. To me she is the Mamma of all Italian Mammas – living in a 250-year-old property surrounded by an enormous veggie garden in
Mamma Mia! te x t & p h otos kim al d e r d en
Ravello. Mamma is a master of traditional, honest Italian cooking. At the age of 14 she began working for a wealthy American who was an event pro ‘avant la lettre.’ Great artists such as Humphrey Bogart and Jackie Kennedy frequented parties where Mamma Agata took care of the F&B department. Now let me introduce you to Mamma’s daughter, Chiara. Thanks to her persistence, all the recipes that were settled in Mamma’s brain have been collected in a beautiful cookbook called Mamma Agata’s Cookbook, Simple and Genuine. Today Chiara is the leading lady of the cooking school bearing her mother’s name. Her interpretation of Mamma Agata recipes are oneof-kind delicious. And talk about a teacher with
a great sense of humour! Chiara never hesitates to make fun of herself, but it’s her 100% warm hospitality that makes her the best hostess I’ve ever met. No wonder, she’s been in hotel management and marketing for almost 20 years. At the time we booked, we were specifically told: NO breakfast before the cooking course. Now I know why! Our morning began with a sampling of the best lemon cake ever, then our group of five international couples were introduced to the secrets of Mamma’s favourite dishes. In Mamma’s kitchen, tasting is a must: sushi from aubergine, a glass of the best pomodori pulpo, all manner of tomatoes, fresh-baked bread drenched in home-made olive oil. I could go on and on. ®
I have a confession to make: I ‘eat’ magazines. Every once in a while I come across an article so delicious, I absolutely devour it! 14 share today | 05.2011

At 11:30 we took a half-hour break for Italian breakfast (!) which included, of course, our first glass of homemade wine. Gennaro, Chiara’s husband, is also sommelier who takes care of their vineyard. (Why do I feel theirs is a match made in heaven?) Soon we were back in the kitchen tasting, chopping, laughing and feeling love for this traditional, honest food. The lunch we created was to-die-for as tantalizing as the view over the bay of Ravello. At 4 o’clock, Chiara and Mamma personally signed cookbooks for each of us. We left with their must-have recipes, kitchen tips, our new Italian cooking know-how…and their hugs, knowing we had made two wonderful new friends.

Capacity for the workshop is 10-12 persons, which makes Mamma’s course a hidden treasure. The restaurant can be booked to serve lunch and dinner on special occasions such as jubilee celebrations or weddings. Future plans: Chiara hopes to collaborate with a famous pastry chef in Amalfi – a good solution when your group is a bit bigger than 12 guests.√

MORE ABOUT ellen
You’ve Got Talent? I Don’t! Keynote speakers. They’ve either ‘got’ me the moment they grab the microphone, or they’ve lost my attention after a split-second. And those can be really boring. But let’s face it; public speaking is an art form! I recently attended a heavily sponsored network meeting which kicked off with a presentation by some guy (a ‘rising star’) who was supposed to entertain the audience of 250 people for 45 minutes (which is already too long, as we all know). The meeting room was filled with an exclusive group of event pro’s: tickling their spoiled fancies would be a hard job for anyone. When I saw the guitar waiting on stage I suddenly got the shivers… ‘Oh please, God! Don’t let him play the guitar while giving his speech!’ Well, it was a miracle because my prayer was answered! He didn’t speak while playing the guitar! No, he sang! For nearly an hour! And it was embarrassing. I’m guessing he had too much coffee because he talked really fast with an audibly dry mouth. And the sound of his voice: as if the good fellow had smoked an entire carton of cigarettes in the dressing room before his ‘speech’ in an attempt to temper his nerves. And let’s not forget the strange guttural sound he made every time he took a breath—as, if he had just been disconnected from an oxygen machine. About halfway through his blablabla he lost his concentration, but it didn’t matter; he had lost the audience from the start. Most people spent their time texting, tweeting and answering e-mails. More than 22 share today | 05.2011
45 minutes later the result was a smattering of applause that may go down in the Guinness Book of World Records as the shortest in history. There we were: 250 people in a bad mood suddenly having to re-boot their emotional and social hard drives. Great way to start a meeting… It made me think back on a half-day workshop I had once taken: Speaking Successfully in Public. It sounded quite handy, career wise, and the eleven other communication specialists who participated seemed to agree. It was an eye-opener! In just a couple of hours I learned how to sharpen and strengthen my point, how to imagine stretching my first chakra towards the ceiling while still remaining grounded (I felt like an elastic Indian yogi), how to keep the audience’s attention by paying attention to the audience and how to NOT use my arms as if I were waving goodbye to someone at the airport. Lean back, bend forward and at the proper moment, grab the audience by the throat.
These are skills I learned that day; tricks, suggestions, intricacies. At the end of the course I was sure I would blow the people away with my speech; a well rehearsed balance of serious and hilarious. My five minutes of fame were drawing nearer (which means I still have ten minutes left, right?). And then—my turn. Piece of cake, right? As I stood up my mouth was dry, my palms were sweating, my knees were trembling, and my heart raced forward at a speed that technically qualifeid as a heart attack. I was given two choices: To give my presentation onstage in the spotlight I longed for… but no; I took the second option: to stand behing my chair, comfy and safe, like a coward. In an instant, I prayed for a miracle… But no; it seemed that The Big Magician upstairs decided that one miracle was enough that unforgettable afternoon.... I know I’m talkative, and I know I have a big mouth—just NOT in public.

Sales, SITE and Social Media;
Aoife Delaney does it all!
Young, dynamic, open minded and a multi talent. Currently she is presenting an exiting web tv and social media experience online called Meeting the World. Her aim is to inspire the global meeting planner during her travel along 6 continents and 20 various destinations in 2011. Furthermore she is global director of sales for the company Ovation Global DMC for UK and Ireland. Time to meet this busy lady. te x t kim al d e r d en p h otos d ive r s
As you noticed Aoife is more than a presenter. Today she is preparing for Chairwoman of the International SITE Conference in Las Vegas that will be held from 13 till 15 October. Fortunately we could persuade her to share some of her precious time for SHARE TODAY. What do we need to know from Aoife as an event personality? “Born in the USA and raised in Ireland, I started in this industry straight from college, which means I now have over 5 years worldwide experience within the industry. I have been a member of the Site Young Leaders Committee since 2008 and I have also featured on the C&IT Rising Star ’s of the Top 30 under 30! With all my travel I like to look after my health and to do that on the go I think Yoga is an excellent option! I qualified as a certified RYS 200 Yoga teacher earlier this year and I will be teaching an early AM morning Yoga class at the Site International Conference so I’m hoping a lot of meeting planners will join me in the morning to get their stretch on!!” We tried to unravel Aiofe’s personal fav’s in Ireland but she is really the all round professional. she should not prefer Irish hotspots above other destinations. Yo girl, we like this attitude! When did you first join Site and what has it given you? “I joined the Site Young Leader Committee in 2008 and have been an active member ever since - serving on the Young Leader committee and co-chairing the committee. This year I will be the Chairwoman for the Site International Conference 2011 in Las Vegas and I have just been nominated onto the Site Board of Directors for 2012 - exciting times! Joining Site has opened up so many doors for me - it has introduced me to so many new contacts in this industry - I have made many new friends, been exposed to amazing education that is focused on young leaders in particular. I also had the opportunity to speak at major industry events through my connection with Site (hosting panels at IMEX and EIBTM), which has been great to add to my experience and to boost my confidence in this industry. As well as all this, Site has helped me to confirm business, with many of the contacts that I have made turning into clients too!” ® share today | 05.2011 25

What was the challenge for you to apply for the role as responsible lady for the international conference? “The time difference! Ha, us European’s are finishing our day when the team in Las Vegas are only waking up - it means a lot of early AM calls for them, they are so good about it.”
For the ones who do not know the SITE network we share some explanation; Site members benefit from belonging to the only global network of travel and event professionals committed to motivational experiences that deliver business results.
Most event pro’s will know Las Vegas either personal or from hearsay. What tip would you like to share on Las Vegas? “Here’s a great tip that I learnt during the Site Inspection for the Site IC in April - Book a table for dinner one evening in Prime steakhouse in The Bellagio hotel and ask for a table overlooking the water display outside. They serve some amazing food, AND you get a private viewing from your table of the Fountains of Bellagio!” √
Through unparalleled networking opportunities, education and connections, members form lasting partnerships that grow their businesses and professional development. Among the calendar of events of SITE their International Conference is a yearly highlight were a few hundred members participate. For more info please check this out.

Costa Rica,
the green Garden of Eden? T e x t Yolan d a L ogt p h otos d ive r s
Whatever preferences for a meeting or incentive there might be, Costa Rica’s mountain, beach and city areas will satisfy the most demanding customers. The variety of options permits you to create original programs based on the profile of participants and on the specific needs and desires of each corporate client. A program can contain adventure, relaxation, team building, and competition or can combine a few of these elements. But what about the sustainable part of these events in such an overwhelming green surroundings? Green visionary Organizing a green event in Costa Rica is not that difficult. Just find the right partner. Meet Jim Damalas, a visionary in the hotel business and pioneer of sustainable travel. Jim started years ago by building hotel Si Como No, which is much more than a nice hotel. A business that could simultaneously sustain economic activity, manage local resources responsibility and protect the environment. Call it the Magic of Nature!
When you visit Costa Rica for the first time you are overwhelmed by its nature, being one of its kind. More green than you would ever expect. Imagine walking around in one of the rain forests, moisture dripping on your raincoat, even smelling the humidity while listening to the numerous bird sounds and looking at your first sloth. In Costa Rica the sounds of nature are everywhere. Not getting the picture yet? Imagine being in any tropical paradise on earth surrounded by inspiring gardens, hot springs and volcanoes: there is your scenery for spectacular meetings and incentives. 28 share today | 05.2011
With the recent acquisition of Villa Blanca Cloud Forest Hotel & Spa, near San Jose, Greentique Hotel group he even extended the Magic of Nature, to the mystique of the Cloud Forest of Costa Rica, a cherished Costa Rica destination. Former president and owner of the place, Rodrigo Carazo Odio had a vision for the place keeping its simplicity, charm and deep respect for the land also known as the spirit of the people. That vision was widely spread by Jim who made Villa Blanca
as it is today: an extraordinary place located in one of the most accessible cloud forest reserves in Central America. All three hotels can be the perfect bases for your sustainable event. But it’s not the accommodation alone that makes your event ‘green’. That would be too easy! Green, greener, greenest One of Villa Blanca’s treasured relationships is its on-going support of butterfly research conducted by INBio, the National Biodiversity Institute. Your meeting or event can be enriched by a private tour through the cloud forest and inside the INBio station. See the research being done with butterflies and moths to gain better understanding of their relationships with plants, other insects and us humans that comprise this incredibly complex and diverse ecosystem. Did you know Costa Rica has more varieties of butterflies and moths than there are in the whole of Africa? ®

Interesting fact is that the effects of global warming are seen in the behavior of the butterflies that have moved farther north or to higher, cooler areas because of increasing temperatures. This is just an example. A program can additionally include activities related to water quality and preservation, improved air quality, energy conservation and sustainable gardening. Too much green? Make it lighter…you can add ‘green details’ to a program that is not necessarily focused on sustainability; Combine creating some consciousness about the need of protecting and helping the environment with more relaxed additions to the program.
Actually we are looking for those who share our vision: by making sustainability a priority in business decisions and demonstrating its importance not only for the longevity of the businesses but also for the well-being of the entire planet.”
The future? Jim: “Our goal is to make green living and green operations seamless, ubiquitous and easy to practice. It is a continuous process of improvement, education and commitment to make the right choices in every aspect of our business that we possibly can. Our reward is helping sustain a country that our guests will recognize as an example of what is possible when respect for both people and nature becomes a national commitment as well as a personal choice.

Swinging Cuba T e x t S H A R E T O D AY P hotos : A nette W ezenberg
“I have been in love with Cuba from day one,” says Genevieve, who lives and works on the island. “Of course the country is known for the 1959 Revolution; countless Olympic medals; famous ballet and guitar schools and, not to mention, the numerous Cuban artists creating modern art. Cuba has lots to offer. And there is more.” Let’s get to know the island a bit better. Havana, a MICE heaven Havana has spectacular architecture and is one of the most stunningly designed cities in the world. Contrasting colors and textures shape the facades. The architecture in Cuba shows influences of other places: there are baroque plazas in Old Havana, classical columns in the city’s villas, colonial fortresses in its harbor and narrow cobblestoned streets. Imagine being there and breath in this special city. Havana suits very well as a great décor for group activities like following in Hemingway’s footsteps by strolling along the narrow streets, visit his favorite bar to enjoy rum tasting or admire the décor of dancing people, musicians and beautiful characters zipping their enormous cigars.
The smell of a good cigar, the true taste of rum, the moves of a good salsa combined with good looking ladies and the sound of the Buena Vista Social Club under a Palm tree; that’s Cuba right? But Cuba has much more to offer, says Genevieve van der Vlugt, owner of Boaz (Business Opportunities A-Z), a company that specializes in tourism and MICE in Cuba. Three eye openers: Havana, Cuban birds, and the historic cities like Cienfuegos or Trinidad.

These typical Cuban activities, make you feel like a sixties moviestar touring around the city. Meet a dance master and learn and enjoy the perfect salsa moves under the stars. We bet you never had such a good dance lesson before. However does your group want more relaxation? Try to create handmade Cuban cigars, a one-off like that will surely taste good with a sip of local rum.
For the more culturally adventurous groups, meet 2 of the most famous Cuban architects, Eusebio Leal and Mario Coyula, and ask for a personal tour through Old Havana or attend one of the rehearsals of the Cuban National Ballet School. Last but not least let famous painters like Kcho and Wilfredo Lam make you a group portrait to remember a great incentive. ®

Bird Watching for special interest groups Cuba is a paradise for bird lovers, with natural sites such as Cienaga de Zapata, Topes de Collantes, Soroa, Vinales, and La Guira National Park. As a result of its specific origins, the island has an extraordinary high rate of biodiversity. The country counts 350 bird species, of which 21 are endemic to the island, including the smallest bird in the world: the Bee hummingbird. Finally, Cuba is also a major stopover for migratory waterfowl birds. So if you have that special interest group that looks for a new destination; introduce Cuba and let them explore and discover! Cienfuegos and Trinidad for those with more time Cienfuegos and Trinidad in the South belong to the best-preserved Spanish historical cores, are on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, and have not yet been discovered by mass tourism. A visit to both cities can perfectly be combined and is good starting point and yet another authentic dimension in your itinerary. SHARE TODAY experienced that the locals are very happy to share their small but intimate kitchen table for dinner or even better have dinner at the family’s rooftop. Taking it even one step further is to stay the night at a private home, of course this is only possible for small groups. During the day stroll through the ancient streets or go swimming with the dolphins (Cienfuegos) while at night listen to the salsa music in one of the castles of Cienfuegos or at the many squares and streets in Trinidad. Do as the locals do and dance the night away!

Unlimited Possibilities and More The possibilities in Cuba are endless. Genevieve mentions: “The jeep safari through the rugged landscape to the caves of Matanzas in the North is always a success. And we guarantee a fresh ‘catch of the day’ on a private catamaran trip along the coast in Varadero.” The face of history is visible around the country but the warmth and passion of the Cubans is an overwhelming experience. √
Ideally a 6-7 day incentive is a good start to deliver a lifetime experience, making a wonderful program full of excitement and diversity.. Need to know more? Genevieve is your woman in Cuba. Special thanks to Genevieve van der Vlugt of Boaz. E-mail: Boazcorp2001@yahoo.com

What does Generation Y want from Conferences and Incentive Programmes? Summary This article examines the particular characteristics of Generation Y, such as their high expectations, their desire for ongoing education and their technological aptitude. It investigates the ways in which conferences and incentive programmes can be designed in such a way that they appeal to this youngest, but fastestgrowing, segment of employees. Approaches include effective use of technology, involvement at the design stage, consideration of CSR and sustainability and effective use of speakers. The recommendations will be of interest to all intermediaries and suppliers in the conference and incentive travel industry, including convention bureaux and other destination marketing organisations, destination management companies, professional conference organisers and incentive travel houses, venues and speakers. Introduction All businesses must adapt their products and services to meet the changing needs of their customers, and the conference and incentive travel industry is no exception. It must constantly evolve in order to ensure that the business events it offers effectively meet the needs and aspirations of each new generation of participants. Conferences and incentive trips play a key role in fostering communication between members of the same profession 40 share today | 05.2011
or the same organisation and achieving greater business results. Most of the end-users of such events, those who invest their time in participating in conferences and incentive programmes, are men and women in some form of employment. For them, such business events can play a key role in their careers, as important sources of information, motivation and networking opportunities. Today, for the first time in history, there are four generations in the global professional and managerial workforce: The Traditionalists, born between 1925 and 1942. Most, but by no means all of these, have retired or entered semi-retirement. The Baby Boomers, born between 1943 and 1960. The oldest of these have begun retiring from employment. Generation X, born between 1961 and 1976. Many of these are already established in management positions.
Generation Y, born between 1977 and 1995. These form the latest cohort to enter the global workforce. (Note: there are various definitions of the generations above, which vary slightly in terms of the years they span). This article examines the particular characteristics of Generation Y and investigates the ways in which conferences and incentive programmes can be designed in such a way that they appeal to this youngest, but fastest-growing, segment of employees. Russia Rocks! te x t K im A l d e r d en p h otos R u sskie P r osto r i
When you meet Ola Kastensson, Swedish by origin and Russian by heart, you are immediately pulled into a storybook about this beautiful country. Over 15 years ago, love brought him to Russia and he never left. Today he is the managing director of Russkie Prostori, a Russian DMC with 3 offices in key destinations. How can we do justice to his inspiring stories in a 2-page article?
05 Wow! Moscow was chosen by the IAAF to host the 2013 World Athletics Championship, the first athletics worlds to be held in Russia.
Here is the ‘ready to rock Russia’ shortlist: 01 Russkie Prostori reveals its new neighbour in Moscow: the brand new Intercontinental Tsverskaya. And we all know that a good neighbour is usually better than a far away friend, right?
07 St. Petersburg through a lens. Check this out for some great non-tourist pics.
06 On July 12th, the famous St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow marked its 450th anniversary. Like the culture stuff? Than this is a must- read for you.
08 The largest FAM trip in Russia just recently took place. The GEP summit in Moscow received 200 MICE industry guests and Ola and his team were in charge. ®
02 Another hotshot hotel in Moscow was voted Russia’s leading luxury hotel in September. Well done, Radisson Royal! 03 OK, one more: the W hotel just very recently opened its first Eastern European spot. The new hotel is located in the city centre, amidst the lavish Winter Palace, stunning Hermitage and famed Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg.
For our ZOOM-IN pages we tried to come up with an inspiring story about Russia. To be honest, it was a bit difficult to find someone with an interesting approach. We almost moved the article to one of our next issues, but at that very moment we met Ola. 42 share today | 05.2011
04 Sochi, the place to be for the winter Olympics in 2014. Russkie Prostori is creating their dream team already. Last June they opened an office there.

09 Russia will introduce high-speed trains before the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The two story trains will transport football fans as well as busy travelers. Russia will be building a new high-speed railway network to modernise its infrastructure. Go, go, go, enjoy some of the ‘vintage’ trains while you can, it is part of the fun when you visit Russia. 10 The country has various faces. Whenever you have a feeling for sustainable or social responsibility projects, think of Russia. Just one idea: trigger your client to make a Christmas shopping list for an orphanage and decorate it on the spot. For sure this decoration will be used year after year. 44 share today | 05.2011
And we saved the best for last! The staff team not only knows how to provide professional services for meetings and incentives but also how to set up a perfect party! How do we know? Well, the World Wide Web has no secrets from us…√
Thank you Ola for your stories, enthusiasm and great piece of sharing. We love your blog and movies on YouTube: a smart example of how to create a MICE vibe within your company.
