Welcome

On behalf of the Edisto Chamber of Commerce, I would like to welcome you to Edisto Island - South Carolina's best-kept secret. Edisto is the ultimate vacation destination. Come rent a beach cottage, throw a cast net for shrimp, dip your toes in the surf, or build a sand castle. Experience the perfect combination of oceanfront beaches, saltwater marshes and Lowcountry oaks draped in Spanish moss. A year-round temperate climate provides for excellent outdoor recreational opportunities. Our coastal waters are filled with fish, shrimp, crabs and oysters. Take a leisurely bike ride, hike a nature trail, or kayak in a tidal creek. Beach walks and golf are yet another popular pastime for that perfect day on Edisto. We invite you to enjoy local seafood in our restaurants and look for unique items in our gift shops. Historic sites are prevalent on the Island and our picturesque roads beg for a drive. We have a rich cultural heritage in which you can share. Boat and land tours are available. Our casual lifestyle and slow pace are a welcome break from the rush of everyday life. For your most memorable vacation, come to where the rivers meet the ocean and let your cares drift away. We welcome you and hope your stay is so enjoyable that you just can't wait to come back! Please stop by the Chamber office, 430 Highway 174, for information about our area. You may reach us at 888-333-2781 or 843-869-3867. Edisto Island offers a variety of locations that are easily accessible year-round for bird watchers of all skill levels. Whether birding from the front porch, or in one of the many natural areas, visitors will be rewarded throughout the summer and winter months and during spring and fall migration. With multiple public beach access points, viewing beach and surf birds with binoculars, or a spotting scope, is easily accomplished. Brown pelicans, ring-billed gulls, herring gulls, laughing gulls, willets, sanderlings, and ruddy turnstones are commonly observed. Winter birding near the Pavilion will provide looks at redbreasted mergansers, red-throated loons, northern gannets with the occasional scoter and scaup. Access points near Big Bay Creek are a great place to see black skimmers, Forster’s terns, marbled godwits, dunlin, plovers and dowitchers. Bay Creek Park and Edisto Beach State Park provide access to saltmarsh habitats where great blue herons, tri-colored herons, great egrets, snowy egrets, swallows, red-winged blackbirds, and clapper rails can be observed. Forest and scrub habitats, which occur in abundance along the Edisto Beach bike trail and Edisto Beach State Park, are great places to see painted buntings, blue-gray gnatcatchers, sharp-shinned hawks, vireos, warblers, and woodpeckers. The many golf course ponds and lagoons are good spots for the American anhinga, black-crowned night heron, green heron, pied-billed grebe, and belted kingfisher. Birdwatchers should also plan a trip to Botany Bay Wildlife Management Area. Only five miles away from the beach, this 4,687 acre public area provides easy access to forest, field, marsh, and beach habitats. In addition to what can be seen on Edisto Beach, birds that can be viewed here include bald eagle, osprey, wood stork, white ibis, wild turkey, Wilson’s plover, buntings, sparrows, and a variety of other shore and songbirds. Needless to say, Edisto Island is definitely a birding destination and one that is sure to provide a memorable outdoor experience.

"Aren't you scared a snake will fall out and land on you?" this reporter asked Clamp. "Nah, all these snakes are nonvenomous," Clamp reponds in a classic Southern drawl. "But I did have one go to the bathroom on my head once." ISLAND GUIDE, VOLUME 17

"We lived out in the country and we saw a lot of snakes," recalls Heyward. But first, they also had to educate their parents - "ordinary people who were brought up to be afraid of snakes, like everyone else," Heyward said. You can only guess what happened to the first snake that 11-year-old Heyward brought home. His father killed it. But it didn't take long for their parents to change their minds. "My mother was always afraid of snakes, but as time went by, she watched us and she learned how to handle them herself," says Heyward. "There was one time we got a call about a rattlesnake in a neighbor's yard. Neither Ted nor I were home, but Mama went. She arrived and there were all these people standing around with shotguns, pitchforks, hoes and shovels, and this little lady goes up, picks the rattlesnake up, dips it in a box and takes it away."

ISLAND GUIDE, VOLUME 17

Heyward and Ted had the same influence on their wives and children. Almost all have had a role in the serpentarium's creation and operation. The brothers tend to like to stay in the background (jokingly referring to themselves as "the janitors") and let their lifelong friend, Judy Johnson "run the place." Ted's oldest daughter Anne generally handles the educational programs.

The Clamps have built the attraction with their own money. Since 1980 Ted has been a house builder, primarily on Edisto. Heyward likes to joke that he's Continued on page 15

"one of Ted's slaves." They built the facility themselves on land they also own. Their message is simple and clear: "We fear what we don't understand. Snakes are valuable assets to our environment and to the health of humans. And they need to be respected." Most adults have heard that message, but often they need to be reminded, and impressionable children need to hear it for the first time. But there's more to their operation than what is basically a small reptile zoo. Family members are called weekly, sometimes daily, by animal control officers and others to fetch snakes across the Lowcountry. They do that service for free despite the fact that it, as Heyward says, can be a "wild goose chase." "Sometimes we drive 50 or 60 miles and the snake is long gone, and then other times we get a prize specimen," says Heyward. They also extract venom for research and antivenin medicines. In fact, one

of only three times Ted has been bitten was from extracting venom from a canebrake rattlesnake back in 1976. One of the other times was when a family member replaced a nonpoinsonous rat snake in a bag with a small water moccasin. Ted saw the bag and thought the rat snake had escaped. He picked up the bag, and the moccasin bit him through it. When asked about being bitten, both brothers said it was "embarassing". Heyward admits to being bitten nine times and bears the worst reminder of a bite suffered by either brother. He has a nub where his right index finger should be. The injury was the result of not holding a cottonmouth tight enough and receiving a "full load of venom" nearly 30 years ago. He adds, "I've gotten better at handling snakes since then." Colorful Things Photography Edisto Beach residents, Steve and Dianna Kilpatrick, are photographers and owners of Colorful Things Photography. What began as a hobby before retirement evolved into a full time photography business, and their vacation home became their studio and permanent residence. The husband and wife team have been active portrait photographers on Edisto since Steve's retirement in 2006, with Steve as the primary photographer and Dianna the editor of the images and business manager. During the off season on Edisto, they can be seen walking the beach spotting and photographing the abundant winter bird life or looking for those all too brief sunrises and sunsets. But with the beginning of the summer tourist season, they get busy photographing families and couples. It isn't unusual to see them early in the morning or late in the evening with families or wedding couples in tow looking for that perfect sunset or sand dune that will make the right background for their beach portraits. Early morning sunrise portraits at Botany Bay are a favorite of their engagement portrait clients. Steve, an electrical engineer and a self-taught photographer, became fascinated with photography and cameras after he purchased his first SLR camera from Sears when he was 12 years old. Growing up in the mountains of North Carolina provided a variety of landscape and wildlife subjects to photograph, and throughout high school he practiced his craft as the school photographer. At the same time, he became familiar 16

with developing and printing black and white photographs. Then, as college, work, marriage, and family progressed so did his camera collection and his love of photography. What began with a Sears SLR camera, blossomed into a Ricoh, a Nikon and two Canon SLR film cameras. With the introduction of digital cameras, a Canon 20D, 40D, 7D, and his most recent purchase, a 5D Mark II, were added to the collection, along with a variety of lenses to optimize the use of available lighting. As a child, Steve, loved watching birds and when his middle son, a wildlife biologist, talked him into going along on a birding trip with some of his Clemson professors, he was hooked on photographing birds. It also gave him a good excuse to purchase a spotting scope and telephoto lens, and Edisto has been an ideal place to put them to use. Steve's bird photographs have been South Carolina Wildlife Magazine award winners and have been published in "The Chat" a birding publication and on the Carolina Birding Club web site. Like Steve, Dianna was a high school photographer and learned to develop black and white prints. Her photography skills were honed taking photographs and slides of their children as they were growing up. She brings her skills as an artist to work editing the images Steve shoots. Post-processing in Photoshop produces the exquisite, one of a kind portraits that their clients have come to expect. No image goes public until ISLAND GUIDE, VOLUME 17

it is perfect; and this is also true of their wildlife and landscape prints. Dianna is an artist who got side tracked teaching middle school math for twelve years while her children were in high school and college. When the last child graduated from college, she left teaching and returned to painting in 2003. Dianna's early painting included a variety of media, pencil, pen and ink, oils, watercolor and pastel, and included still life, figure drawing, landscapes and portraiture. In 2003 she began dabbling with acrylic paints and started painting on anything that didn't move. Eventually, she began selling her work at arts and craft shows, gradually bringing in Steve's photographs to sell as well. Dianna finally began focusing her painting on

a series of beach themed Christmas ornaments she calls her "Coastal Collection," which will be in its tenth year this year. Her ornaments are now in demand by collectors throughout the Carolinas. Steve and Dianna's work can be seen at arts and crafts shows on Edisto Island and in Aiken, SC. Their web site, www.colorfulthingsphotography. com, not only showcases their nature photography but displays the family and wedding galleries of their clients. They are members of the Edisto Art Guild, the Edisto Chamber of Commerce and NAPP. According to Steve, a lot of catching the right moment in photography is "being in the right place at the right time."

For

Twenty Four Years... An Annual Edisto Tradition By Charles C. “Buddy Smith, Jr., 2012 Tournament Chairman (smith@deltaadvisory.com)

Perhaps the greatest beauty of tradition is that it elevates the ordinary. An ordinary summer day on Edisto is special; a day in the week of Edisto's Governor's Cup is extraordinarily special. For 24 years Edisto residents and visitors alike experience the Governor's Cup Series where camaraderie and the lifestyle of Edisto are showcased. This was underscored at last year's event by our hosting The Honorable Governor Nicki Haley. As a lowcountry native and lifetime lover of Edisto, the Governor ff Dennis Courtesy of Je om s.c or Photographco and her family chose do ut yo tr www.low un to attend the Edisto event. Because of the demands of the office, this marked the first time in a number of years that a sitting Governor has attended any Governor's Cup event. With roots of Edisto going deep - as in 64 years deep... my own memories of this unique place called Edisto are vivid. Lifelong friendships, afternoons on the water, walks on the beach, fall oyster roasts, beautiful days on the porch and sunsets like no other have helped define my family's life and mine. As the Chairman of Edisto Marina Governor's Cup Billfish Tournament for a decade, I have the privilege of producing this event, along with an enthusiastic team with the mission of showcasing Edisto. As a charter marina of the South Carolina Governor's Cup Series, Edisto is proud to be known as the best and "most fun" of the 5 event tournament. From the vision of former Governor Carroll Campbell, the prestigious South Carolina Governor's Cup Billfish Tournament was launched in 1989. Under the operational management of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, two of the department's finest, Mr. Wally Jenkins and 18

Ms. Amy Dukes, work hand-in-hand with five selected venues and tournament chairmen/directors in the promotion of this annual event. With South Carolina's treasured natural resources contributing some 30 billion dollars annually and sustaining in excess of 230,000 jobs, the conservation of these resources is of highest priority. By all estimations this elite billfishing series has achieved its objectives of promoting the sport fishing industry, increasing coastal tourism and encouraging conservation of pelagic fish species. For almost 60 years, Edisto Marina has served the Edisto community as the flagship venue for its boating and fishing enthusiasts. As a Colleton County native and owner of Edisto Marina, Inc., I am proud to offer the county its only full service coastal marina. With many other Photograph Courtesy of more strategically located Dennis www.lowcountryoutdoJeff ors.com and larger marinas along the coast of South Carolina, Edisto Marina Governor's Cup has become a favored destination of the series. As the Tournament Chairman for my 10th consecutive year, I continue to be encouraged as I witness the positive impact of this event on our community. With its contribution to commerce exceeding any other week of the year, with the exception of holidays, we are privileged to again host this year's event. The event officially opens on Wednesday evening, July 25th, 2012, with the traditional blessing of the fleet by the Rev. Wey Camp, Rector of Edisto's Trinity Episcopal Church, followed with words of welcome by Mayor Burley Lyons. Beginning at 3:00 p.m. on fishing days, weigh-ins are always a spirited dock party and well attended. ISLAND GUIDE, VOLUME 17

WADMALAW ISLAND

Points of Interest 1 Botany Bay Plantation

Protected as private lands handed down through centuries by planters made rich by Edisto’s slave laborers working its fertile ground, Civil War and Reconstruction led to industrial tycoons discovering the natural treasures of South Carolina’s Lowcountry. Plantation after plantation, bought for getaways and recreation, evolved into the conservation ethic of “This is my land and it shall be Forever Wild.” Those last words, “Forever Wild,” today appear on bumper stickers provided by the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR), which oversees Botany Bay. SEABROOK ISLAND

2 The Edisto Island Serpentarium

As the first true Serpentarium in South Carolina, this facility is dedicated to the recognition, preservation and study of the world of reptiles. They provide educational and exciting displays of reptiles both from around the world and native to the region. Once here, you can view these beautiful creatures in both our indoor and outdoor facilities. Alligators and turtles swim and play in large outdoor ponds in our outdoor gardens, while other reptiles bask in the large indoor solarium. Also inside, snakes of the world find homes in large displays hand-painted with scenes native to their region. Among them are many representations of the most important species of reptiles in the Americas. 1374 Highway 174, 843-869-1171, www.edistoserpentarium.com, eserpentarium@bellsouth.net March 1st to March 31st Indoor Open only Thur-Fri-Sat 10-3

3 The Edisto Beach State Park

An oceanfront campground on a palmetto-lined beach famed for its shelling is just one highlight of Edisto Beach State Park. The park also offers another campground deep in the maritime forest full of live oaks and some of the state’s tallest palmetto trees, as well as a row of comfortable cabins nestled in the woods but with a front-row view of miles of pristine marshland. The park also has an environmental education center, a “green” building full of exhibits that highlight the natural history of Edisto Island and the surrounding ACE Basin, one of the nation’s largest preserved estuaries. 8377 State Cabin Rd., 843-869-2156, 843-869-2756, 843-869-4430, www.southcarolinaparks.com, edistobeach@scprt.com Admissions: $5/adult; $3.50/SC seniors; $3/child age 6-15; Free for children 5 and younger. Explore the history and artifacts unique to Edisto Island, South Carolina, a special place with a fascinating story to share. For well over 300 years, Native Americans, Spanish priests, Spanish pirates, English settlers, Africans, and others including a famous Motown musician have come to Edisto Island and left their influence on this beautiful and unique island. At the Edisto Museum, you can learn what they left behind, and all of these objects have a story to tell. From its opening in 1991, the Edisto Museum has preserved the objects of Edisto Island and interpreted them to illustrate the history and natural history of the Island. If you enjoy history, this is a must see when you’re visiting Edisto! The Edisto Island Museum is located in the center of Edisto Island, just off scenic Highway 174, far from the hustle and bustle of the mainland. They are open TuesdaySaturday from 1:00-4:00. The Shrimp Trawling Experience

by Abbe Tale

Captain Jimmy Bell makes the lowcounty shrimper’s life a hands on reality for any of us lucky enough to charter a morning on his authentically outfitted trawler, Sweet Polly. From the time we left the dock in the early morning calm of Big Bay Creek and saw the lovely water birds peacefully feeding in the shallows, we felt we had entered another time; an earlier time. As we turned into the South Edisto Channel and saw dolphins playing and heard the gulls calling, the chaos of our daily lives seemed far away. When we got to the shrimping grounds, Captain Jimmy expertly explained the way shrimp trawlers operate and all there is to know about the net and the rigging. He also entertained us with stories and bits of history along the way about the shrimping industry and life as a shrimper. He ran large trawlers out of Edisto for over 30 years and is a wealth of information. He happily explained the way all the electronic equipment works to the kids, young and old. We set the net over and pulled it for about 10 minutes. It was truly exciting to pull the net in and get our first look at what Captain Jimmy dumped out of the bag on the deck for us to see and hold. There were shrimp, starfish, sand dollars, and many varieties of fish and crabs. And then, best of all, when we looked up a whole pod of dolphins was right by the side of the boat waiting on all our by-catch. They were beautiful! They stayed with us the whole time we pulled the net and feasted on our by-catch each time we swept it over. After we decided we had enough shrimp, Captain Jimmy took us fishing. It was so relaxing. There was no pressure to catch the biggest or the best fish, but we all caught something, even the youngest ones in our group – the Captain made sure of that. Before we knew it, our trip was over. time had flown by, but we got back to the dock with enough shrimp and fish to feed us for a day or two and enough memories to last a lifetime. We came away with a unique understanding of and appreciation for the shrimping way of life.
