office of the mayor and city council Welcome to Peoria! Spring Training is one of the most exciting times of the year – and where better to catch the action than right here at the Peoria Sports Complex, Spring Training home of the Seattle Mariners and San Diego Padres. When the first pitch was thrown at the newly constructed Peoria Sports Complex on March 2, 1994, development in the area around the Sports Complex was sparse, leaving few options for post-game activities. Today, you have numerous choices, from shopping or catching a movie, to ice and roller skating or enjoying dinner at one of the many restaurants nearby. The Peoria Sports Complex anchors the West Valley’s growing entertainment core, which means that each year you return for a visit, there’s certain to be even more to do. One new addition nearby is the Arizona Broadway Theater at 7701 W. Paradise Lane. Located just east of the Peoria Sports Complex, the theater seats 400 and offers great dining along with great performances. For more information, call 623-776-8400. Other local favorites you won’t want to miss include the Challenger Space Center, Lake Pleasant Regional Park and Rio Vista Community Park. The Space Center offers exhibits, mini space missions, and tours. Call 623-322-2001 for more information. Peoria is proud to be the “Gateway to Lake Pleasant,” one of the finest water recreation areas in Arizona. Managed by Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department, Lake Pleasant offers camping, hiking, picnicking and watercraft activities for the entire family. Call 928-501-1710 for more information. Also located just minutes from the Peoria Sports Complex at 8866 W. Thunderbird Road is Rio Vista Community Park, which offers fishing in a 2.5-acre urban lake, a skateboard park, ball fields, lighted sand volleyball courts, playground equipment, numerous picnic ramadas and other recreational opportunities. You might also notice some construction near the Sports Complex grounds. Alter Group is building an 80,000 square-foot office complex on the southeast corner of 83rd Avenue and Paradise Lane. Once complete, the complex will bring additional employment opportunities to Peoria residents and maintain the energy level around the Sports Complex all year long. Finally, if you are still in the area, we hope that you will join us in celebrating Pioneer Days in Old Town Peoria on April 1. It’s great fun for the entire family as we celebrate and recognize Peoria’s earliest beginnings with a hometown parade, arts and crafts, food and entertainment. I hope you enjoy your stay in Peoria and thank you for helping us celebrate the 13th year of the Peoria Sports Complex. Sincerely,

peoria sports complex The Peoria Sports Complex is located ¼ mile South of Bell on 83rd Avenue and adjacent to Loop 101 which connects to I-10 and I-17. When the San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners announced plans to locate their training facilities in Peoria, it capped over two years of negotiations between teams, the City of Peoria, the Peoria Economic Development Group, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, the Maricopa County Stadium District Advisory Board and the Maricopa County Flood Control District. The Padres and Mariners both signed 20 year leases with the City of Peoria ensuring their presence here until 2013 with additional options available for a potential extension up to 30 years. This agreement assures the stability of the entire Cactus League for the future. Two thirds of the $32 million ($21.5) was pledged by the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors through the rental car tax. The remaining one third represents contributions by the City of Peoria of land and infrastructure. Built in 1994, the Peoria Sports Complex serves as the Cactus League Spring Training and Player Development home of the Seattle Mariners and the San Diego Padres. The nearly 145 acre campus is comprised of an 11,000 seat Main Stadium, twelve full-sized baseball fields, multiple batting tunnels, and 2 luxury clubhouses. The stadium was built for easy access, convenience of services, and for the customer’s comfort. The Sports Complex has a total of 2700 paved parking spaces. The stadium has state of the art press facilities for print media, radio and television broadcasting. All facilities on site meet ADA requirements.
The operations and maintenance of the city owned facility during Spring Training is covered through revenue shares with the teams on ticket sales, concessions, and parking. The Stadium hosts a minimum of 28 to 30 Cactus League Spring Training games each season attracting an average of 225,000 fans, giving the Peoria Sports Complex the highest attendance in the Cactus League. In addition to the Cactus League games the campus also serves as a multi-use venue facilitating both baseball and non-baseball events year-round. These year-round events include numerous national youth and adult baseball tournaments, the Arizona Fall League, art exhibits and trade shows, concerts, graduations, RV shows, carnivals and fairs. Pacific Rim National teams from Japan and Korea have also utilized the Complex fields for player development. A recent independent third party report conducted by HOK Sport rated the Peoria Sports Complex as the most highly used facility in Arizona and Florida of like facilities on a year-round basis, attracting over 530,000 patrons each year. More notably, in 2005 the Peoria Sports Complex was named an Arizona Treasure by Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano, and won the title “Best Place to see a Spring Training Game” by Phoenix New Times. The Peoria Sports Complex and its many facilities are available for rent after Spring Training. For availability, fees and other information, please call the Complex Operations Office at (623) 773-8700. The Peoria Sports Complex is owned and operated by the City of Peoria.

World Baseball Classic
brings International Flavor to Spring Training Season
by Charlie Vascellaro
Ichiro Suzuki
W
hile Mariners right fielder Ichiro Suzuki has spent the past five years endearing himself to the city of Seattle in particular and baseball fans in general with his derring-do style of play, this spring he’ll have the chance to win back the broken hearts of his Japanese countrymen playing for his home country in the World Baseball Classic. The World Baseball Classic, a round robin style tournament consisting of teams from 16 different countries taking place March 3-20, 2006, has its genesis in the increasing internationalization of baseball across the globe during the past few decades. Baseball is not only the United States’ national pastime it’s also the official game of many countries around the world where skills and abilities have improved to the point of providing viable competition at or near par with the Major League level. The World Baseball Classic is the cooperative effort of the Major League Baseball Player’s Association in cooperation with Nippon Professional Baseball, the Korea Baseball Organization and their respective players associations, as well as other professional leagues across the globe, and is sanctioned by the International Baseball Federation. “One of my priorities, one of the game’s priorities, is the internationalization of baseball,” commissioner of Major League Baseball, Bud Selig said, in reference to the tournament at a press conference in Deerborn, Michigan last July. “We’re doing everything we can to move the sport in an international direction. I think this is going to be a fantastic way of helping to internationalize the game.” Internationalization of the game appears to already be moving in that direction with nearly 30% of current Major League Baseball players being born outside of the United States and each year it seems more and more players from around the world are being named to the All-Star Game lineups (almost 50% last year). Both of those numbers are likely to increase as almost half of the players currently in the Minor Leagues were born in foreign countries. The Seattle Mariners are ahead of the curve with 50% of the team’s current roster being born outside of the United States, coming from a widely diverse array of countries including, Australia, the Dominican Republic, Curacao, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Canada and Japan. peoria sports complex • www.peoriaaz.com/sportscomplex
11
The Mariners are also well represented in the World Baseball Classic with as many as 18 players from nine different countries being named to provisional rosters. That number however will be cut at least in half, as there is a limit of nine players from any one Major League team participating in the tournament. At the time of this writing it was not known which of the 18 Mariners named to provisional rosters had actually made their teams but Suzuki would have to be considered not just a lock but one of the cornerstones of a Japanese team that also boasts stars from its two professional leagues including Nobuhiko Matsunaka, who knocked 46 home runs with 121 RBI for Fukuoka Softbank Hawks of the Pacific League and Takahiro Arai (43 HRs) of the Hiroshima Toyo Carp as well as Akinori Iwamura (30 dingers) of the Yakult Swallows.

Ichiro, who played for the Orix BlueWave in Japan for 10 years before becoming the first Japanese position player to star in the Major Leagues in 2001, was among the first Major Leaguers to enlist his services for an international squad in the World Baseball Classic, accepting an invitation from Japanese manager and alltime home run king Saduharu Oh. Mariners’ pitcher Joel Pineiro and catcher Rene Rivera will represent Puerto Rico while hurlers Felix Hernandez and Cesar Jiminez were named to the Venezuelan provisional roster along with infielder Jose Lopez. Four Mariners Minor Leaguers - Yung-Chi Chen, Chia-An Huang, Kuo-Hui Lo and Chao-Kuan Wu- were named to the Chinese Taipei preliminary roster while another pair of Minor League pitchers, Travis Blackley and Ryan Rowland Smith were named to the provisional Australian roster. About 60% of roster spots for all 16 teams participating in the WBC will be filled by Major League players of wide variety of national origins representing their home countries. This tournament will by no means be a cakewalk for the U.S. or any of the other 15 teams participating. “Just look at the Dominican (Republic) lineup. [Which includes Mariners third baseman Adrian Beltre.] I mean, it’s phenomenal,” said commissioner Bud Selig. The San Diego Padres will be represented in the World Baseball Classic with pitcher Jake Peavey throwing for the U.S. and by third baseman Vinny Castilla playing for the Mexican team and pitcher Chan-Ho Park of Korea. Former Mariners Minor League outfielder Dustin Delucchi was signed by the Padres in the off-season and was among approximately two-dozen Major League affiliated players named to the Italian team. This year Cactus League fans have the opportunity to see some of The World Baseball Classic in person with first round games being played in Scottsdale and Phoenix, and two exhibition games in Peoria. Running concurrently with regular spring training, Major League players participating in the Classic will have first reported to their respective teams training camps before embarking on their indefinite journey through the tournament. A total of 39 games will be played during the two-week long tournament from March 3-18. Round one of the Classic will begin at the Tokyo Dome in Japan from March 3-5, with a pool of four teams including Korea, Chinese Tapei, China and Japan squaring off in a six-game series from which two teams will move on to the next round. Japan’s squad features perennial Major League all-star Ichiro Suzuki, while Chinese Taipei will have 11 big leaguers including New York Yankees peoria sports complex • www.peoriaaz.com/sportscomplex

pitcher Chien-Ming Wang. Dodgers slugging first baseman Hee-Seop Choi and Padres pitcher Chan-Ho Park are among eight Major Leaguers on the Korean team. China and Cuba are the only teams in the tournament without a Major League Baseball player on its roster. The two qualifying teams from the Asian Round 1 Pool (Japan, Korea, China, Chinese Taipei) are also scheduled to train in Peoria at the Mariners and Padres complex from March 7-11 while awaiting second round games in Anaheim. Each of these teams are also scheduled to play exhibition games with the Rangers and Royals in Surprise, the Padres and Mariners in Peoria and the Brewers in Maryvale, on March 8th, 9th, and 10th at 7:05 p.m. The Mexican team is also scheduled to play a pair of exhibition games with the Arizona Diamondbacks in Tucson on March 4th and 5th. Two days after the Giants exhibition game with Team USA, Pool B consisting of Canada, Mexico, South Africa and the USA will begin play at Scottsdale Stadium and the Arizona Diamondbacks Chase Field home in Phoenix from March 7-10. Scottsdale Stadium will host first round tournament games between Canada and South Africa at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday March 7. Dodgers relief ace Eric Gagne is among four Major Leaguers on the Canadian team while two Minor League members of the
Cactus League’s Kansas City Royals, Barry Armitage and Bruce McCleland are among four Major Leaguers on the South African team. Mexico and South Africa play at Scottsdale Stadium on Wednesday the 8th at 7:00 p.m. and Friday the 10th at 1:00 p.m. Mexico’s roster sports 24 Major Leaguers including new Dodgers shortstop Nomar Garciaparra, Padres third baseman Vinny Castilla and Oakland A’s pitcher Esteban Loaiza. Team USA should be among the tournament favorites fielding a familiar group of American Major Leaguers like Bonds, Ken Griffey Jr. and youngsters like Marlins pitcher Dontrelle Willis and Mets third sacker David Wright playing its first game against Mexico at Chase Field on March 7 at 2:00 p.m. and playing Canada at Chase Field on the 8th at 2:00. Canada plays Mexico at Chase Field on March 9 at 6:00 p.m. “The continued cooperation of the Diamondbacks and the Giants is another example of the great support from our clubs for the World Baseball Classic,” said Commissioner Selig in a written statement at the time of the tournament’s announcement. “Chase Field and Scottsdale Stadium are fine facilities in prime locations, and we thank both clubs for their enthusiasm.” Pool C will begin play with Puerto Rico facing Panama in San Juan, Puerto Rico on March 7. Both teams’ rosters are comprised predominantly if not completely of Major Leaguers with Tigers catcher Ivan Rodriguez, and Mets first baseman Carlos Delgado representing Puerto Rico while Panama’s squad features Yankees relief legend Mariano Rivera and Brewers slugger Carlos Lee. Braves Gold Glove center fielder Andruw Jones is among 24 Major Leaguers playing for the Netherlands who will face Cuba in the first round, from March 7-10 at Puerto Rico’s Hiram Bithorn Stadium.
Rene Rivera
Chan-Ho Park
Pool D consists of the Dominican Republic, with an All-Star studded cast featuring Red Sox sluggers Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz as well as Mets and Angels respective hurlers Pedro Martinez and Bartolo Colon, versus an impressive Venezuelan team including respective Marlins and Phillies outfielders Miguel Cabrera and Bobby Abreu as well Cubs ace hurler Carlos Zambrano. Australia will also field a squad almost completely comprised of Major Leaguers against an interesting Italian team containing American Major Leaguers of Italian descent like catcher Mike Piazza and Rangers outfielder Dustin Delucchi. Pool D’s games will be played at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando Florida from March 7-10. The eight teams emerging from the first round tournaments will be divided into two second round pools with the winners from Pool A and B meeting at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California March 14-16 while Pool C and D qualifiers will square off in Puerto Rico March 12-15.The semifinal games will be played on March 18 at San Diego’s PETCO Park and the Championship game is also at PETCO on March 20. Participants in the World Baseball Classic will be subject to Olympic-style drug testing in accordance with an Anti-Doping Agreement signed by MLBPA (Major League Baseball Player’s Association) and the IBF (International Baseball Federation). Of course participants in the classic cannot bet on the outcomes of the games, but my money is on Japan, Korea, USA, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela to emerge from the first round pools with the USA, Japan, Cuba and the Dominican Republic advancing to the quarter finals and finally Team USA meeting the Dominican Republic in the championship game, but the great thing about a tournament like this is the possibility of an underdog team surprising the world! peoria sports complex • www.peoriaaz.com/sportscomplex

san diego padres executives kevin towers Executive Vice President/ General Manager
Named the seventh General Manager in club history on November 17, 1995, Kevin Towers was promoted to Executive Vice President/General Manager in March 2000. The 2006 campaign will mark a quarter-century in professional baseball for Towers, as well as his 23rd season with the Padres’ organization. Under Towers’ direction, the Padres have won three National League West titles, most recently in 2005, and the 1998 National League pennant, one of two World Series appearances by the franchise. The Padres have won 793 games since Towers became the head of the club’s baseball operations, the sixth-highest total of any active General Manager. He is the fourth-longest-tenured active General Manager and upon conclusion of the 2006 season he will surpass Jack McKeon (10 1/2 seasons) as the franchise’s longesttenured GM. Other accomplishments by the Padres under Towers’ management include a franchise-record 98 wins in 1998 and a 23-win turnaround from 2003 to 2004, the single largest improvement from one season to the next in club history. A native of Medford, Oregon, Towers first joined the Padres when he was selected in the first round of the 1982 First-Year Player Draft after earning All-Western Athletic Conference honors as a right-handed pitcher for Brigham Young University. A Texas League All-Star in 1984, he pitched seven seasons in San Diego’s farm system before a series of arm operations ended his playing career at Triple-A, where at Las Vegas in 1988, his catcher was current Padres’ skipper, Bruce Bochy. Towers, 44, entered his post-playing career as an area scout for the Padres in Texas and Louisiana from 1989-1991. During the summers of 1989 and 1990, he also served as pitching coach for the organization’s short-season Single-A affiliate in Spokane. The club won Northwest League championships in both seasons, the first with Bochy as manager. After two years with the Pittsburgh Pirates—first as a regional cross-checker, then as a national cross-checker—Towers returned to the Padres as Director of Scouting in August 1993. Towers and the Baseball Operations Department have implemented a long-term strategy for success on both the major and minor league levels that begins with building a core group of players while maintaining the flexibility to make the changes necessary to improve. The strategy also includes a focus on player development to increase the value of the minor league system providing the resources necessary to win at the Major League level. In players like Trevor Hoffman, Jake Peavy, Brian Giles, Mike Cameron and Khalil Greene, the Padres have established that core group, a group assembled to be successful playing in PETCO Park. Minor league prospects Josh Barfield, George Kottaras, Cesar Carrillo and Jared Wells are projected to factor into the future success of the ballclub. Towers and his wife, Kelley, reside in San Diego with their bulldogs, Dutch Henry, Fiona and Mullion.

here’s no question that the Seattle Mariners have a lot to work on in Peoria this spring. They finished last in the American League West in 2005, largely because of an offense that underperformed despite the acquisition of two vaunted sluggers - Adrian Beltre and Richie Sexson - in the winter of 2004. The Mariners haven’t wasted any time in retooling their roster, and part of that renovation plan was the hiring of veteran hitting coach Jeff Pentland, a Valley native who was the Kansas City Royals’ hitting coach until the middle of last season and has built a great reputation as a teacher of hitting. Pentland also served as hitting coach for the Florida Marlins and the Chicago Cubs, where he tutored Sammy Sosa right before that slugger’s career took off. Pentland also worked with Barry Bonds, Gary Sheffield and Edgar Renteria early in their careers. This year, Pentland knows he has his work cut out for him, but he says he’s ready for the challenge. “I’m excited,” Pentland says. “I’ve been with a few teams, but for some reason, Seattle’s always had a warm place in my heart. I’ve always felt good about the organization and I feel very lucky to be part of the team.” Pentland says he’s going to take a fresh approach with the 2006 Mariners. A major part of that will be forgetting 2005 and simply focusing on the new season and the task ahead. “First of all, I don’t dwell on what happened last year,” Pentland says. “It’s a new year and a new plan. I’m not going to look at the negative side of it other than that as a collective group, we’ve got to do a much better job of team offense and doing better things as a team.” One way of improving, Pentland says, is by changing the flawed philosophy that says offense is all about getting hits and compiling great statistics. “It’s a matter of getting on base any way we can and doing the things that help create runs,” Pentland says. “The game tends to be thought of too much from an individual standpoint. We need to get the job done as a team, with 13 or 14 guys getting involved and all playing a role in this.”
Still, Pentland admits that the offense will be a lot better if the team gets better individual seasons from Beltre and second-year man Jeremy Reed. Beltre had a monster, MVP-type year for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2004 (.332 batting average, 48 home runs, 121 RBIs) before signing with the Mariners, and last year, he slumped to a .255 average with 19 homers and 87 RBIs. Pentland said he has already reviewed tapes of Beltre from last year and hasn’t seen anything to get overly concerned about. It’s mostly confidence,” Pentland says. “From a technical standpoint, you look at last year’s tape and compare it to the year he had with the Dodgers, and there’s not a lot of outstanding problems. He’s close technically, with maybe a little tinkering or refining needed here and there.” Reed, meanwhile, had the heavy weight of high expectations put on him in 2005 after a dazzling September 2004 call-up. According to Pentland, Reed needed the year to adjust to the big leagues and put up disappointing overall numbers, including a .254 average and only three homers. So Pentland went to work with Reed quickly, inviting him to the Valley for three days of conversation, hitting drills and general getting-to-know-each-other time. He pronounced it a big success. “We spent a lot of time on communicating with one another, getting a feel for one another, and understanding that the best thing that happened for him in 2005 was that he got his first year in the big leagues under him,” Pentland says. Overall, Pentland says the talent is there for the Mariners to surprise some people. Pentland’s job will be to make sure the offense is well-balanced, with runs coming from the long ball and from utilizing speed and smarts on the basepaths. “The big thing is increasing run production,” Pentland says. “No one loves the three-run homer more than I do, but it’s hard to do. We’ve got to learn how to score runs other than the homer. Hopefully it works out. There’s a lot of ability there. After last year, we’ve got our work cut out for us, but I think we can make some things happen.” peoria sports complex • www.peoriaaz.com/sportscomplex

There are many reasons Bruce Bochy is in the very top echelon of Major League Baseball managers. The key though, is simple– Bruce Bochy is a player’s manager. Padres Hall of Fame Broadcaster and former Padres manager Jerry Coleman sums it up: “Bruce Bochy’s a great manager because he understands the players who are playing for him. That’s the incredible thing. If you understand who your players are, how they think, what their process of getting through the game is, you become a great manager. Without that, you fail.” “Bruce is a great manager because he understands the players who are playing for him,” agrees closer Trevor Hoffman. “Bochy understands people. He understands his players.” But how does he understand them so well? It doesn’t come easy. He works hard - and long - at it. And he tries to understand his opponents just as well as his own roster. Here’s just one typical example – during a mid-summer homestand last season when Padres were facing Arizona, the Padres’ dugout was almost empty 90 minutes before game time. Players had gone back up the stairs to the clubhouse. Only one solitary person sat almost motionless on the bench, eyes darting, watching, very carefully, everything the Diamondback players were doing during batting practice. It was Bruce Bochy, as usual, still cramming for that night’s game, looking for any little extra detail he might have missed about Diamondback tendencies. That sense of dedication is one of many reasons CEO Sandy Alderson gave Bochy a two-year contract extension last June. “Bruce Bochy has earned the confidence and respect of his players, coaches, peers and front office,” Alderson said in announcing the contract extension. Executive Vice President/General Manager Kevin Towers also paid tribute, simply and directly: “I have always felt that Bruce was one of the best baseball minds in the business.” Bochy himself shakes his head at such things. “When you hear players want to play for you, that’s what you’re peoria sports complex • www.peoriaaz.com/sportscomplex

Fresh off a National League West title, Bruce Bochy returns to Peoria for his 11th season as manager for the San Diego Padres hoping for as a manager,” he says. “You’re not going to have everyone agree with you in this job, that goes with the territory. It goes back to the old joke that managing is just keeping the 23 or 24 guys who like you away from the one or two guys who don’t like you.” His philosophy is a straight-forward and simple one – treat players as he would want to be treated, and be true to himself. “Hopefully I’ve learned over the years that probably the most important thing to remember as a manager is don’t believe all the good things that are said about you and don’t believe all the bad, either,” he says with a wry smile. “Because you’re going to hear both of them. There are going to be a lot of people who don’t agree with what you do. And that’s one of the great things about this game; you can debate a lot of issues. Whether somebody is not playing, or why so-and-so is playing, or how you are handling your game moves, things like that. But no matter what anybody else says about you, you’ve got to do what you think is right and stick with it.” When asked about those who call Bochy one of the best managers in the game, Padres legend Tony Gwynn simply smiles and throws himself into the same camp. “I think he is, too,” says Gwynn. “He’s a great Xs and Os guy. He’s a lot better motivational speaker than I ever thought. His game strategy is good. Players like playing for him mostly because he lets them play. As long as you prepare yourself every day and you come to the ballpark willing to do what he asks you to do, you’re really not going to have much of a problem with Bruce Bochy. The only things that really drive him up a wall are mental mistakes, the kind of mistakes you make that you don’t prepare for. Those drive him to drink.” Randy Jones, the 1976 Cy Young winner, is still the Padres’ all-time leader in innings pitched, starts, complete games, and shutouts. In his mind, Bochy’s talent can be summed up simply: “It’s his communication skills with the players. He’s not afraid to talk to them, and he’s day in and day out a player’s manager.” That skill, Jones says, “motivates a ballplayer. It’s not intimidation, you just respect what he’s got to say. And Bochy has that from every single one of the guys on this ballclub. He will communicate with you. And if he’s not happy, he’ll tell
30

you. He’ll do it behind closed doors. He won’t show you up. And that’s one of the great things about him. He knows how to motivate the guys one on one if he has to. If he has to walk around the field and talk to every single guy, he’ll do it. And that makes all the difference in the world to these guys because they know where they stand every day when they come in.” Bochy himself agrees that these days each player requires a personal touch from the manager. “One size doesn’t fit all when you are dealing with these players,” he says. “You’ve got to handle them all in different ways.” And the player-manager relationship has changed a lot from when he broke into baseball on June 19, 1978. “I think today’s player knows more about what’s going on in baseball and I think they need more of an understanding of what’s going on with their role on the club. If you make a move, whether it’s a demotion or you are changing their role, they’re going to hear or read about it. So I think it’s best handled by explaining to them what your thinking is first, before they hear about it from the media.” Padres first baseman Ryan Klesko has been one to have his role changed, but always carefully explained by Bochy. “He is amazing,” Klesko says admiringly. “He’s really close to the players on this team, to where some managers are distant. I think that’s what makes him such a good manager. He knows what’s going on. He’s in there. He talks to you. He’ll walk around during batting practice and talk to guys.”
Though Bochy is animated in the clubhouse with his players, when you catch a game at PETCO Park or watch on Channel 4 San Diego, it’s impossible to tell from his expression if a Padres player or an opponent has just hit a grand slam. But both Tony Gwynn and Randy Jones have a clue for you about when Mount Bochy is getting ready to explode. “For the most part, he is very calm,” Gwynn says with his trademark chuckle. “But the distinguishing mark fans can always look for when stuff is not happening the way he wants it to happen is when he takes his big right hand and runs it right through the middle of his hair. That’s when you know that he’s about ready to go.” Jones laughs and says: “That’s one of his traits. If that hat’s off, you know there’s something wrong.”
“A lot of people think I’m very low key, and I think they would be surprised at the frustrations I have on this end. People seem amazed that I can watch things go wrong and keep my cool. But there are many times when I think some people would be really surprised at how emotional I get when things don’t go well.” But he disagrees with those who call him a successful majorleague manager. “I don’t think I have been successful,” he says with emphasis. “I think until you win the World Series, you’re not. I don’t look at wins or getting to the playoffs as being successful. I am just like any player here. We would like to get to the World Series and get a ring. That’s what it is all about. Until that happens I don’t think I’ll ever feel I’ve been successful. That is always going to drive me.”
Bochy himself readily admits that the stoic image most fans have of him is just not accurate.
“One size doesn’t fit all when you are dealing with these players,”… “You’ve got to handle them all in different ways.”

A promising crop of young players are making a name for themselves in Seattle.

The Seattle Mariners caught a glimpse of what could become their future—in 2006 and in years to come—flash before their eyes in June, when two future Hall of Fame pitchers were beaten at Safeco Field by a 24-year-old center fielder with Gold Glove potential, a 21-year-old second baseman with 25-homer power, a 23year-old shortstop off the big league radar screen when the season began and a catcher, 21, who started the season in Double-A San Antonio. In two games, the foursome contributed eight hits and knocked in five runs against eight New York Mets pitchers, including Pedro Martinez and Tom Glavine, as the Mariners completed a three-game weekend sweep. Jeremy Reed, Jose Lopez, Mike Morse, Rene Rivera—along with relief pitcher J.J. Putz—
shined in that series against the Mets. Since then, even more young players have joined the club and immediately had their presence felt. Yuniesky Betancourt and Felix Hernandez also saw significant playing time down the stretch. For Seattle manager Mike Hargrove and the Mariners front office, this is a sneak peek at what could become the next generation—a cast of players ready to join Richie Sexson, Adrian Beltre and Ichiro Suzuki in leading the team back to the pinnacle of the American League West. “You really learn what it means to be up here,” Morse said. “And you also learn what it means to stay up here.” Morse, the third player (along with Reed and catcher Miguel Olivo) in last year’s Freddy Garcia trade, arrived

Felix Hernandez, a right handed Venezuelan widely considered the best minor league pitching prospect in all of baseball, moved up the Mariners prospect ladder faster than his 98 mph fastball. In early August, he arrived in the Majors with as much hype and expectation as any other big league call-up this season. At least initially, he’s lived up to the billing. Held to a strict pitch count in his first start, he only allowed three hits and one earned run over five innings, while striking out four. Perhaps most impressive, he allowed two hits and two walks before recording an out, then settled down and only allowed one other batter to reach base. Not a bad debut for a 19year-old. Making hitters look silly is nothing new for Hernandez. Signed as a free agent in the summer of 2002, Hernandez went 16-5 in 24 starts in Single-A Everett, Wisconsin and Inland Empire in 2003 and 2004, and garnered a 5-1 record in 10 starts at Double-A San Antonio to end last summer. The dominant Hernandez had struck out 263 batters in 218 innings of minor league ball coming into this season. Hernandez began the 2005 season in Tacoma, where he continued to average more than a strikeout an inning. To provide him with a soft landing in the Majors, the Mariners will be careful not to overuse him in 2006. But he promises to be the team’s mound anchor for many years to come. peoria sports complex • www.peoriaaz.com/sportscomplex

May 31 after a successful start at Triple-A Tacoma. Morse’s Rainiers double-play partner Lopez joined him a couple weeks later. And Yuniesky Betancourt arrived as the everyday shortstop for the season’s final two months. Reed had a head start, breaking camp with the big club and starting in center field on Opening Day, where he has been ever since. For veterans like Richie Sexson and Raul Ibañez, who both have played the role of up-and-comer in a roomful of experienced big leaguers, so far so good. “I was impressed with their approach and the way they go about their business,” Ibañez said. “They did their jobs, and kept

their ears open and their lips sealed.” Sexson agreed with his teammate.“They’re learning as they go, but they’ve been great so far.” Morse may have made the most surprising impact of the rookies, hitting in 17 of 20 games in one stretch and showing a knack for being selective on pitches, spraying the ball to all fields and delivering clutch hits in game-winning situations. Projected as a perennial .300 hitter with potential 15-20 home run power, Reed is a line drive gap hitter in the mold of Angels first baseman Darin Erstad. He also plays the game with the same bull-nosed intensity: high socks, dirt-stained uniform, recurring scowl and all. “Jeremy’s still learning how to play at this level, and every day is a learning experience for him,” said Hargrove, never a manager to place young players too high on any pedestal. “Is he hitting what he expects or what we expect from him? No, not yet. But he works very hard at it, and his defense has been golden.”
The Next Four Reed’s sparkling glove work has gotten notice around the league, most of all by Seattle pitchers aware of the potential damage Safeco’s cavernous outfield can do to an earned run average. Putz, now in his second season in the bullpen, said Reed has helped him on several occasions. “He’s been unbelievable out there, but all the [young] guys have,” he said. “They all have a game plan and go out and execute it.” Putz’s own game plan is simple: Use his imposing 6-5, 250-pound frame and 98-mph fastball to get hitters out in the later innings. Yuniesky Betancourt, a 23-year-old shortstop, has seen so much real-life drama that on-field pressure doesn’t faze him. After hitting .523 for the 17-18 year old Cuban National Team in the World Championships in 2000, Betancourt escaped Cuba with eight other people on a small boat in 2003. The Mariners outbid several teams to sign the slick fielder, who rose quickly through the minor league ranks after signing with Seattle before the 2005 season. Jose Lopez, a native of Venezuela, has a resume that suggests he could be a fixture in the infield and the middle of the Mariners lineup for years to come. Seattle signed him as a 16-year-old and tabbed him one of the organization’s top prospects just two years later. “Jose’s hit in every level since we got him,” said Benny Looper, the Mariners vice president of player development & scouting. “He’s got a very high ceiling, and we expect that he will hit, and hit with power.” As the team heads into the 2006 season the future is now for the Seattle Mariners. With a strong foundation of veterans already in place, and a cast of young, talented players vying to be the complementary pieces around them, the next generation of baseball success in Seattle may be in place. Scott Holter is a freelance writer based in Seattle.
As the current crop of young Mariners strive to earn a ride on the team’s next wave, four other players appear on the cusp of joining them:
Shin-Soo Choo, 24: A left-handed hitting corner outfielder from Korea, Choo has hit over .300 in nearly every season since joining the Seattle organization in 2001.
Clint Nageotte, 25: After a brief stint in the Majors in 2004 as a starter, an injury forced Nageotte to the Tacoma bullpen in 2005. The hard-throwing right-hander with a Major League slider was dominant last season in that role.
Rafael Soriano, 26: He threw in the high 90s before Tommy John surgery in summer of 2004 forced him to miss more than 18 months. If Soriano can come back strong (and early indications are that he will), the Mariners have a bullpen stopper for years to come.
Bobby Livingston, 24: Seattle drafted the lefty starter out of high school in 2001, and Livingston has made a quick rise through the system. He started 2005 in Double-A San Antonio and moved up to Tacoma, where he was a bright spot in a Rainiers starting rotation that also featured Felix Hernandez in 2005. peoria sports complex • www.peoriaaz.com/sportscomplex

Off-season moves by the 2005 NL West Champion Padres hope to lead the club to a deeper run in October
READY To By Joe Connor
Harken back only five years ago and it appeared the World Series trophy would never leave Yankee Stadium, with the Bronx Bombers entering Spring Training 2001 winners of four of the previous five Fall Classics. But since then, two clubs have won their first World Series (Arizona in 2001 and Anaheim in 2002) while two others (Boston in 2004 and the White Sox in 2005) have quashed long-standing curses. With Spring Training 2006 in full swing, the Padres are today just one of eight Major League clubs yet to be crowned World Series Champions. So even though San Diego’s team won the National League West in 2005, that accomplishment did not blur its ultimate off-season goal – build a better team for a better chance at a World Series championship. Just four months removed from their first postseason appearance since 1998, the 2006 Padres appear to have decidedly more experience; greater offensive punch; improved defense; and enhanced depth. One month after leading the Padres into the most recent postseason, San Diego resident Brian Giles saw the club’s 2006 plans quickly unfolding before his very eyes even while his own status remained in limbo. Two veteran boppers, third baseman Vinny Castilla and centerfielder Mike Cameron had been acquired. “Right-handed power is going to help in PETCO Park and both those guys have power,” says Giles. “You see these deals and you want to be a part of that.”
GO
Last year, the Padres ranked near the bottom offensively, scoring the fourth fewest runs in the National League. In their first off-season working together, Padres CEO Sandy Alderson and Executive Vice President/General Manager Kevin Towers not only were dealing, they would also eventually re-sign Giles, the Granite Hills High graduate and team MVP in 2005. “There’s a lot of parity in baseball,” explains Giles. “In Spring Training last year, no one thought the Chicago White Sox would win the World Series. We’re here to get back into October – and advance. You get the (right) guys that step in and play well, and you never know what can happen.”
In trading for Cameron, the Padres have their first Gold Glove centerfielder since Steve Finley. Cameron, a two-time Gold Glover who belted 30 home runs in 2004, is no stranger to covering PETCO Park’s vast expanses. On August 11 last season, the former Mets outfielder collided in the San Diego outfield with teammate Carlos Beltran, breaking his nose and fracturing two cheekbones. Cameron was carried off on a stretcher that day, and few could have imagined that his next regular season game would be in a Padres uniform. Towers had other ideas however. “I had worn (Mets General Manager) Omar (Minaya) out over the last two years, calling several times about Cameron,” quips Towers. Added the LaGrange, Georgia native: “I get to return to the scene of the crime and put all my fears away.”

The Padres’ last big signing came just weeks prior to pitchers and catchers reporting to the Peoria Sports Complex. On January 31, the club agreed to terms with free agent catcher Mike Piazza on a one-year contract and an option for 2007. The slugging Piazza joins a revamped backstop crew that includes veterans Doug Mirabelli and David Ross competing for more than just a backup job. “I have something to prove,” says Mirabelli, a career backup who, as a result, has less wear and tear on his 35-year-old knees than his peers. “I have a little chip on my shoulder (to prove I deserve to start).” Not only will the 2006 Padres boast a motivated new centerfielder, third baseman and catcher, but also a new starting rotation and bullpen behind stalwarts, All-Star starter Jake Peavy and veteran relievers Scott Linebrink and Trevor Hoffman. Lacking a steady left-handed starter in 2005, the Padres signed the experienced Shawn Estes this off-season to bolster a starting rotation that could also include veteran right-handers Woody Williams and Chan Ho Park. The club also added a With third baseman Castilla, the Padres add not just a steady glove at the hot corner, but also power to a position that hasn’t seen much offensive thunder since the late Ken Caminiti. The 15-year veteran, who also is now the Padres’ most notable Mexican-born player since Fernando Valenzuela, has averaged nearly 30 home runs annually over his career. Castilla has appeared in the postseason four different October’s, but on each occasion has yet to advance beyond the Division Series. When the motivated 38-year-old Oaxaca, Mexico native needs a breather, two new veteran, switchhitting teammates with World Series rings are likely to spell him – Mark Bellhorn and Geoff Blum. The soft-spoken Bellhorn, who could also likely see action at second base, homered three times in the 2004 postseason to help the Red Sox win their first World Series crown since 1918 while Blum’s pitch-hit dinger in Game 3 of the 2005 World Series enabled the White Sox to eventually win it all for the first time since 1917. Blum, who began 2005 with the Padres before a mid-season trade to the White Sox, bolsters the club’s bench, which again also includes veteran Eric Young, who hit .275 for the team a year ago despite missing much of the season with a shoulder injury. The veteran presence of Blum and Young is likely to be balanced on the bench by more youthful exuberance, which may include switch-hitter Bobby Hill, who will also compete for the second base job along with Padres prospect Josh Barfield. Rounding out the infield, a healthy Khalil Greene returns at shortstop, and longtime Padre Ryan Klesko to patrolling first base, with newcomer Adrian Gonzalez, an Eastlake High (Chula Vista) grad, expected to backup the veteran. Gonzalez, a solid defender with some pop, adds a potential left-handed bat off the bench as does fellow newcomer, Terrmel Sledge, who will compete for an outfield reserve role with two other left-handed hitters, Paul McAnulty and Jack Cust, and speedy switch-hitter Freddy Guzman could also be in the bench mix. With the return of Giles and the addition of Cameron in center field, Rancho Buena Vista alum Dave Roberts shifts to left field where he could very well share time starting with Ben Johnson, who made his Major League debut in 2005 with the Padres.

pair of younger right-handed arms to the potential staff with the acquisition this past winter of Chris Young, 26, from Texas, and Dewon Brazelton, 25, from Tampa Bay. Young’s 12-7 record in 2005, and 137 strikeouts against 45 walks, should improve outside hitter-friendly Ameriquest Field in Arlington and inside pitcherfriendly PETCO Park. Right-hander Tim Stauffer, 23, who made his Major League debut with the Padres in 2005, could also win a starting job. The Padres will also have a revamped bullpen in 2006, with the reliable Linebrink (2005 – 8-1, 1.83 ERA) moving into the permanent set-up role for Hoffman who re-signed with the club this off-season, ensuring “Hells Bells” will be ringing from San Diego to the Hall-of-Fame in Cooperstown, New York. Hoffman needs just 43 more saves to become Major League Baseball’s all-time saves leader. Clay Hensley, who posted a 1.70 ERA for the Padres in 2005, will likely be back in the bullpen, but could also potentially start. Veteran right-handers Brian Sikorski (2005 – 7-1, 3.29 ERA in Japan), Doug Brocail, and Scott Cassidy will compete for bullpen spots while a pair of young lefty farm-
hands, Rusty Tucker and Sean Thompson, could also open some eyes and battle for a coveted place on the Padres’ staff along with veteran Seth Etherton. A fourth former 2004 Red Sox Champion, lefty Alan Embree, will also compete in Spring Training to join the Padres’ pitching staff. And two more hurlers to watch this March are Kenny Baugh and Steve Andrade. Baugh, 26, went 12-8 with a 3.38 ERA for Triple-A Toledo in 2005 while Andrade, 27, has a noteworthy Minor League Baseball career mark of 13-8 with a 2.65 ERA. Some six months from now, the Padres will be back right here in the desert. They’ll be playing their final series of the regular season at Chase Field, formerly known as Bank One Ballpark, just some 15 miles east of Peoria Stadium in downtown Phoenix. They hope to be doing so as back-to-back National League West Champions – and then some. “I’m really excited about the potential of this club when it’s all said and done,”Towers says. “Hopefully, we’re not just advancing to play in the League Championship Series but hopefully playing again for the World Series.”

For the Seattle Mariners, the 2005 season was sort of like an iceberg. No, not because the Mariners were worried about being sunk by a collision. Because while the team saw some incremental improvement last year, like an iceberg, most of it was out of sight. The big league team on the field did win six more games than the previous season but the big news was elsewhere in the organization. “The past two seasons, we have been a team, and an organization, in transition,” Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Bill Bavasi said. With Bavasi in the lead, the Mariners organization has built depth in the minor league system – particularly pitching depth – and has successfully moved players through the system more quickly. At the same time, the club has had back-to-back very strong amateur drafts, and continued to do great work in international scouting. Bavasi, and his staff, have also retooled the Major League coaching staff, and have manager Mike Hargrove entering his second year with the club. In 2005, three of the top-four minor league club’s in Seattle’s system advanced to the postseason, even while talent from the farm system flowed to the big league club. Felix Hernandez, Yuniesky Betancourt, Jose Lo-
pez, Rene Rivera and Jeremy Reed are just some of the talented young players who have advanced out from the Mariners minor league teams to the big leagues. At the same time, in an 18-month span from July 2004 to the end of the season, Bavasi added 10 quality-pitching prospects to bolster the Mariners depth. Now that construction on the foundation is moving ahead rapidly, it is time for the Major League team to reap the benefits. After signing Richie Sexson and Adrian Beltre prior to the 2005 season, Bavasi entered the 2005 off-season with three clear priorities: 1. Improve the starting pitching; 2. Add left-handed “pop”; 3. Improve the catching. While the signings happened exactly backwards, at the end of the winter all three were accomplished. New catcher Kenji Johjima, a free-agent from Japan, has joined the club, left-handed hitting free-agent Carl Everett should fill the designated hitter spot and the Mariners pried left-handed starting pitcher Jarrod Washburn away from the Angels, while re-signing Jamie Moyer, who was 10-0 in Safeco. Here’s a quick look at some of the new Mariners for 2005:
heading
JARROD WASHBURN “Jarrod is a proven Major-League winner who immediately makes us better in the starting rotation,” Bavasi said. “He has pitched in big games, including in the postseason, and helped a team to a World Series championship. He was a pitcher we had targeted from the beginning of the off-season and we are very excited to have him on the club for the next four years.” Washburn, 31, was fourth in the American League in ERA last season, with a 3.20 mark. In 177.1 innings pitched, he allowed just 63 earned runs while posting an 8-8 record. Jarrod was second in the American League in road ERA at 2.65 mark and led the AL in night ERA at 2.53. Jarrod allowed more than three earned runs in just three of his final 17 starts. Washburn did not allow a stolen base all season; the 177.1 innings without a steal was the fourth-highest total of innings pitched in a season without allowing a steal since 1974. In his Major League career, Washburn is 47-24, 3.34 away from Angels Stadium in Anaheim, compared to 28-33, 4.61 at home. Washburn and Jamey Wright are the only active pitchers with at least 1000.0 innings pitched and a road ERA more than one run lower than their home ERA. “Jarrod should be a great fit for our rotation,” Mariners Manager Mike Hargrove said. “With the left-handed hitting in the AL West and in our ballpark, it’s nice to have another lefty.” Washburn compiled a 1.93 ERA in two Safeco Field starts in 2005 while holding opponents to a .188 batting average here. Lifetime in Safeco Field, Washburn is 5-4 with a 3.53 ERA in 11 starts. Washburn has made 25 or more starts in each of his past five years (2001-2005), and has averaged nearly 187.0 innings pitched per year over that stretch. He is tied for 32nd in innings pitched since 2001. Jarrod’s 40 road wins since 2001 are sixth in the big leagues and his .667 winning percentage since 2001 is tied for 15th (min: 20 decisions). Among pitchers with 60 or more decisions on the road, he is fourth (40-20) since 2001, trailing Curt Schilling, Bartolo Colon and C.C. Sabathia

Seattle also made a couple of changes on the coaching staff, adding new pitching coach Rafael Chaves and hiring Jeff Pentland as the hitting coach. In addition, Mike Goff, who filled in as first base coach for the final two months last season, will return and Dan Rohn, who managed Seattle’s AAA Tacoma club the past four years, will fill the newly created “administrative coach” position with the big league club. Pentland has 10 years of big league experience as a hitting coach, with Kansas City, Chicago and Florida. In 2003, the Royals led the Majors in batting with runners in scoring position, and Raul Ibanez had a breakout season. Pentland was a member of the 1967 ASU National Championship team, and coached college baseball for 12 years before moving to the pro ranks. Chaves is in his ninth season in the Mariners organization, having moved all the way from rookie ball to the Majors as a coach. He’s been successful at every level, as five of the eight years he’s coached the team advanced to the postseason. He spent the past two seasons with Tacoma, including tutoring Felix Hernandez last season when he was PCL Rookie and Pitcher of the Year. Goff is in his 15th year in the Mariners organization having both managed and overseen the instruction on the minor league level. Rohn is in his ninth year in the Mariners organization. He was named PCL Manager of the Year in 2004 and 2005. As administrative coach, he will participate in pre-game work, but will not be in uniform during the game. Instead he will help coordinate scouting information.
KENJI JOHJIMA “This was a unique opportunity for us,” Bavasi said. “We had a chance to acquire offense at a premium position and we went after it aggressively. As soon as he steps on the field, he makes our Major League roster better, and that’s what we needed as we headed into this offseason. It is also significant for us since this will not involve compensation during next year’s amateur draft.” Johjima, 29, has a career .299 batting average with 211 home runs and 699 RBI in 11 seasons (1,117 games) with the Pacific League’s Fukuoka Softbank Hawks. He batted .309 (127x411) with 24 home runs and 57 RBI over 116 games in an injury-shortened 2005 season. Johjima broke the tibia in his left leg on Sept. 22 and missed the reminder of the campaign. “Kenji is an exciting acquisition for the Seattle Mariners, not only on the field as a superb catcher, but also in terms of what he will bring to the Seattle community,” said Mariners Chairman & CEO Howard
Bill Bavasi Major Off-Season Moves Nov. 22 Kenji Johjima, C, signed three-year Major League contract. Dec. 7 Jamie Moyer, LHP, signed a one-year Major League contract. Yorvit Torrealba, C, traded to the Colorado Rockies. Dec. 19 Jarrod Washburn, LHP, signed a four-year contract.
Lincoln. “I was fortunate enough to spend some time with Kenji and his family when they visited Seattle and came away from that meeting highly impressed. He approaches this opportunity as a great challenge. Having met him, I am confident he will meet this challenge and become a tremendous asset to the Mariners. Our fans are really going to enjoy watching Kenji.” A right-handed batter, Johjima became a Major League free agent on Nov. 8. He has averaged .305, 30 homers and 87 RBI in 627 games over the past five years. Johjima has led the league in caught-stealing percentage four consecutive seasons. Playing under manager and legendary player Sadaharu Oh, Johjima was a member of three Pacific League championship teams (1999, 2000, 2003). The Hawks won the Japanese Series in 1999 and 2003. A six-time post-season All-Star, Johjima was named to the Pacific League “Best Nine” from 1999-2001 and again from 2003-2005. He was a first-round selection by the Hawks in the 1994 draft. A native of Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture, Johjima was named the Pacific League’s Most Valuable Player in 2003, when he hit .330 with 34 homers and 119 RBI over a career-high tying 140 games. He was hit by a pitch 22 times in 2004, breaking Ichiro Suzuki’s previous Pacific League mark of 18. Johjima was a member of the Bronze Medal Japanese team in the 2004 Olympics.
CARL EVERETT “Carl Everett is a clutch-hitting run producer with power,” Bavasi said. “As a switch-hitter, he provides our lineup with added versatility. Carl is a winner, most recently as a member of the 2005 World Series Champion Chicago White Sox. His experience and intensity will be welcome additions to our clubhouse.” Everett, 34, batted .251 (123x490) with 23 home runs and 87 RBI in 135 regular-season games for the White Sox,

year. Last season Everett was second on the White Sox in RBI and third on the team in home runs. He collected 20-plus homers and 80-plus RBI for the fourth time in his big league career. His RBI ratio of one run batted in for every 5.63 at-bats ranked 12th in the American League. For his career, Everett has played on three playoff teams (Houston, 1998-99; White Sox, 2005). He batted .300 “Carl will primarily be the DH, but will also play some in our outfield,” Hargrove said. “Having him in my lineup gives us some of the left-handed sock and run production we were looking for.” Everett is one of six switch-hitters in Major League history (and the only player to accomplish the feat in successive seasons) to record 100 RBI in each league (108 with Houston in 1999 and Boston in 2000), joining Bobby Bonilla, Eddie Murray, Ted Simmons, Ken Singleton and J.T. Snow. Overall, Everett has a lifetime Major League batting average of .274 with 191 home runs and 759 RBI over 1,313 games. Since 2000, he has played 699 of his 708 games in the American League, batting .273 with 120 home runs

Originally drafted by the New York Yankees in the first round of the 1990 amateur draft, Everett has a career batting average of .300 with 49 HR and 555 RBI with runners in scoring position. He has a career average of .282 with 157 home runs and 590 RBI vs. right-handed pitchers. Everett has hit .253 with 34 homers and 169 RBI against left-handers.

Coaches Corner
Tye Waller and Glenn Hoffman are the new - but familiar - faces on the Padres’ 2006 coaching staff By Sandy Burgin The San Diego Padres will be sporting a new look this spring both inside and outside the lines. Tye Waller and Glenn Hoffman have taken over the coaching duties at first and third base, respectively, succeeding Davey Lopes and Rob Picciolo. Waller spent the last six seasons as the Padres’ Director of Player Development. He has been a member of the organization for the past 18 years as a coach, instructor and administrator. He was the Padres’ bullpen coach for manager Bruce Bochy in his first season in 1995. He began his coaching career in Spokane in 1988 after an 11-year playing career with the Cardinals, Cubs and Astros. Hoffman, older brother of Padres closer Trevor Hoffman, was the third base coach of the Los Angeles Dodgers for the last six seasons. A former big league shortstop with the Red Sox, Dodgers and Angels, he began his coaching career in 1991 as manager at Rookie League Great Falls. He managed the Dodgers for part of the 1998 season, leading them to a 47-41 record. Both Waller and Hoffman will look to Spring Training to help in their transitioning to a new job and a new team, respectively. “Your focus isn’t as broad in the big scope of things now,” says Waller. “I have to concentrate on one team of guys compared to a whole organization of guys. So I am dealing with the players on a more individual basis and working with a staff on a day-to-day basis. And the stakes are always higher at the Major League level. “The biggest focus for me at Spring Training is getting to know the players and how they respond in game situations,” Waller adds. “We’ll be trying to get a feel for what we want to see happen on the field to where we’re working together. We want to get a good sense of one another, where we become as productive as possible on the field.” Hoffman will be experiencing his first Spring Training in the desert since he was a player with the Angels in 1989. “Spring Training will provide me with an opportunity to pick up tendencies of our runners as well as our pitchers and everyone else,” says Hoffman. “I will be scheduling and coordinating Spring Training for Boch as I did for Jim Tracy with the Dodgers. “It will be a big challenge this season coming in, trying to get to know a new staff and new players. Spring Training should certainly help that.” One Padre whom Hoffman won’t have to familiarize himself with is his brother Trevor, who is closing in on the all-time save record. “It will be a new experience for both of us,” says the older Hoffman. “We’ve never been on the same team at any point in our lives. I am really looking forward to the opportunity to coach him and to be a part of the Padres organization. “It will be a thrill to watch Trevor at the end of his career and to see him perform out there on a daily basis both on and off the field.” Glenn doesn’t believe that his signing played any part in Trevor’s signing with the Padres. “I really don’t believe my signing figured in any way,” he says. “I’m just glad that Trevor got it done and will be able to stay in San Diego. In this game of baseball you don’t know where you’re going to be from year to year. I’m just thankful that we will be together for a while.”
While Hoffman will be returning to a familiar position as third base coach, Waller will be undertaking a new position as first base coach. But it won’t be a totally new experience. “I was the outfield and base running instructor for a number of years with the Padres organization,” says Waller. “There were many times I would come into town and I’d coach first base at all levels. I would get out there with the guys and try to get a feel for what they were doing. I probably have more experience at coaching first base than any other position.” Waller says he had a number of conversations with a number of other first base coaches over the winter. “The key for me is knowing the players,” Waller admits. “Once you know the players, nothing they do should surprise you.You want to remind guys of certain things and keep it in their minds so when they get on base they can react to what the game offers without having to think about it. “Every guy reacts differently on the bases somewhere. They may have some similarities but you have to know as a coach how you think he’s going to respond. And that is what is constant in coaching. You’re always trying to take a guy from where he is to the next level so you maximize his potential.” Waller and Hoffman have met a few times over the winter and will certainly hunker down during Spring Training as they get reads on the players and get to know each other. “I worked with John Shelby (Dodgers first base coach) for eight years and he helped me a great deal and I’m sure it will be the same way with Tye,” says Hoffman. The fact that Hoffman has been in the NL West will make things smoother in transition in that he knows all the National League ballparks. “Since we play each team in the division 19 times a year, you do get a good feel for the parks,” Hoffman says. “And I do feel comfortable having been in the NL West for a long time.” The off-season this year was a bit different for both Waller and Hoffman. “My telephone rings a lot less than it did when I was in the office,” says Waller. “You don’t know how busy you are until you’re not as busy. I’ve had a chance to relax and spend time with the family. And I haven’t had that much time in a long time.” “My off-season was a bit different,” says Hoffman. “Just getting used to the staff, coordinating new schedules and getting to know different players and clubhouse people. It’s a new experience.” Hoffman has interviewed for a number of managerial positions in recent years. However, he says he is focused on coaching. “Right now my mindset is to help the Padres and Boch in any capacity I can. That’s what they hired me to do. As far as (managing) further down the road, only time will tell. For right now I’m pleased where I’m at.” And so is Waller. “I enjoyed getting to know my kids and my wife and friends and family a lot more over the winter,” says Waller. “It was nice, but I think the body knows that this is the time to get to work. Once the holidays are over, you can almost smell the grass, feel the breeze and hear the sounds of the bat.”
