SENSE OF PLACE
Stepping into Ann Siang Hill transports you to a different realm. You enter into a world that is a culmination of Singapore’s history, culture, economy, and policy. The repurposed shophouses have been cleaned and refurbished to their pre-slum glory. The old had been gutted, removing “house” from “shophouse”, to make way for a new insertion that is surprisingly befitting. This new neighbourhood, elevated from its previous lowly circumstance, is home to trendy bars, intimate restaurants, and chic boutiques. An assortment of spaces is used in a variety of ways. The mobile facility of the five-foot way is turned to the socialising at busy watering holes. The street sees a change of use from traffic to dining. A green space provides quiet respite in contrast to the vibrant street scenes. Using facades of visual interest, one meanders through the enclave of Ann Siang Hill, discovering hidden vistas of brightly coloured shophouses. Despite being conveniently close to Singapore’s Central Business District and just beyond the heart of Chinatown, the tall skyscrapers of Cross Street, Pearl’s Hill, and Duxton fall away as topography changes perspectives. Various sensorial stimuli are experienced in many layers, giving a distinct nonvisual character to Ann Siang Hill.
