SPRING/SUMMER 2018

A Message From Madam Regional Director

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. On this, my 1,155th day of (as of July 5, 2018) serving as your South Atlantic Regional Director, I offer my sincere and heartfelt thanks for what has been a magnificent and fulfilling experience. My tenure will forever be cherished as I worked with each of you to uphold the ideals of our beloved Alpha Kappa Alpha.

Words seem inadequate to express my sincere appreciation for the unconditional love and support of the region. I have endeavored to ensure that South Atlantic Region has been represented, and your concerns have been addressed to the best of my ability. The dedication and hard work you displayed each and every day makes my time in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated so very sweet. South Atlantic Region always rises to the occasion, and your support of the Launching New Dimensions of Service Program, is indicative first-class service. SAR was able to collect 221, 445 backpacks and donate 2.7 million dollars to HBCUs. In addition, our EAF fundraising efforts have been “off the chart. I feel certain that we have reached the $900,000 mark. SAR has initiated 4,900 new sorors over the past four years. Your energy, enthusiasm and dedication make this region the epitome of what Ethel Hedgeman Lyle envisioned over 110 years ago. As I leave the position as regional director, know that every gesture and courtesy extended to me will never be forgotten. You have been my source of inspiration and have supported me through trials, tribulations, happiness and joy! I have been abundantly blessed to forge these life-long relationships which will carry on in years to come. Continue your transforming efforts impacting the lives of our citizens in our communities of Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to have you as a part of this journey. It has been a labor of love to work with such a dedicated, sincere and caring group of sorors. None of these achievements would have been possible without you! I will forever cherish the bonds we have forged and loyalties you have shown as we worked diligently to continue the legacy of service. The sorors of the Significant South Atlantic Region continuously demonstrates impeccable leadership skills and strive to be strong advocates of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Promise. Let us now collectively support and empower our South Atlantic Regional Director-elect, Soror Carolyn G. Randolph, to take us to the next level. I have been a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated for two-thirds of my life. As this chapter of my life closes, it is my hope, my trust and my prayer that you will reflect on all of the good that has been done and carry forth with purpose, passion, perseverance and performance for many years to come. 2

Purpose – ACCOMPLISHMENTS & CONFERENCES

Sorors, you have shown that you are not only passionate about providing service to all mankind, but that you are about the business of Alpha Kappa Alpha with your tremendous attendance during the various conferences, Risk Management Summit, and AKA Days at the Capitol within the past 12 months: • Undergraduate Roundup and Retreat - Over 1,060 undergraduate and graduate Sorors from over 43 chapters from South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, St. Croix, St. Thomas and the Bahamas attended the 2017 Undergraduate Roundup and Retreat in Columbia, SC, August 25-26. The South Atlantic and International Regions once again joined forces to educate the undergraduate Sorors about the ongoing efforts of AKA Connection and LNDS programs, as well as social responsibility in a media savvy world. • Cluster Conferences – The Significant South Atlantic Region hosted eight cluster conferences in the great states of South Carolina (Greenville, North Charleston and Florence), Georgia (Atlanta and Columbus), and Florida (Jacksonville, Fort Lauderdale and Orlando) with over 4,500 attendees. The attendance numbers were outstanding last year and I thank you for your commitment to serve. Also, during the HBCU pep rallies and conference workshops, Sorors donated over $34,000 towards EAF in honor of the Think HBCU initiative. Clusters also donated over 600 backpacks and school supplies. • AKA Days at the Capitol – Over 700 Sorors from South Carolina, Georgia and Florida advocated, educated and networked during this year’s AKA Days at the Capitol. #Take A.C.T.I.O.N and #Be the Voice Passion – PROGRAMS Sorors, as always, the South Atlantic Region has stepped up and showed out with the tremendous accomplishments chapters have made during this administration for the LNDS program initiatives: • • • • • • • • • •

Pi Alpha Omega Leads through A.C.T.I.O.N. in Policy and Voter Education (Atlanta, GA) - The Pi Alpha Omega AKA Connection Committee began this year advocating for legislation that supported women and minorities and educating the community about elections in Georgia. The committee began with a chapter wide “Know Before You Go” voter awareness initiative at each chapter meeting, whereby chapter members could stop by the AKA Connection info table to check their voter registration status, update voter information and learn who their Federal, State and City elected officials were. Additionally, the AKA Connection committee hosted two successful voter registration drives at Atlanta Technical College benefitting over 50 voters here in Georgia. During the 2018 Georgia Legislative Session, the committee’s advocacy efforts included educating chapter members about crucial legislation that would impact women, children, and underserved communities. Pi Alpha Omega members contacted their State legislators through writing campaigns about voter suppression and redistricting bills. Connection committee members also partnered with the chapter’s Family Strengthening program initiative to lobby for a State earned tax credit that would benefit over one million Georgia families by helping them keep more of the money they earn and lift them out of poverty. A highlight of our A.C.T.I.O.N. efforts included the publication of our Voter Education newsletter “Be the Voice Guide” designed to educate chapter members and the metro Atlanta community about the primary elections in Georgia. Through their A.C.T.I.O.N. efforts, they were able to Advocate, Communicate, Train, Influence, Organize, Network and Be the Voice for our community.
