It really gives me great pleasure to re-launch the Awakenings magazine. Since its birth in 2013 the holistic and wellness sector has seen a dramatic boom in the UAE, with holistic centres popping up all over and most people now knowing that they should not be leaving the house in the morning without a green juice to set them up for the day! There is a major health crisis worldwide and more and more people are finally 'awakening' to the fact that we have to take responsibility for our health and wellbeing. Eating a nutritious diet, cleansing the body, and nurturing our mind, body and soul is essential. Our aim is to bring you thought provoking and inspirational articles on how to live your best life!

etoxing has become increasingly popular over the last few years as we become more aware of the harmful toxins all around us be it in the atmosphere, pollution or even the food we eat and their damaging affects on the body and mind. Although to some it may seem a relatively new concept, detoxing, or the idea of removing harmful toxins and negative energy in the body, has actually been practised for centuries. Amatara recognises the importance and need for such a process and provides guests with a range of programmes to help cleanse, feel revitalised and relaxed. With a choice of a three, five or seven night detox programme to choose from, Amatara has everything you need to kick-start a healthier lifestyle and help you leave with a thoroughly refreshed and rebalanced body and mind. We opted for a full five-night detox experience. Their unique, tailored packages are focused on individuals needs and concerns but all programmes include colon hydrotherapy, detox supplements, Ayurvedic massage, ‘Chi Tei Tsang’ massages, yoga sessions suitable from the complete novice to 8 | AWAKENINGSME.COM | SPRING 2017

the well accomplished, and a detailed medical consultation upon arrival. You can also choose from their daily activities calendar if you get enough time... Tired and weary from our long flight, entering our beautiful moon-lit room we were excited to start the process and felt instantly relaxed and at ease from the moment we were greeted at the airport with cool towels and exotic cold pressed juices. Waking up the next morning to a beautiful cacophony of birdsong and beautiful views of the ocean fringed with palm trees it’s easy to switch off and relax and forget all the modern day stresses we were so used to. This is a place where you won’t be tempted to check those emails and adhere to deadlines or follow up important business; you have no choice but to relax. Relaxation and calming of the mind is also an extremely important part of the detox process as it allows your mind and body to slow down and start repairing itself from the damages caused by stress, poor diet and city living with harmful atmospheric pollutants. Even those with a well-balanced diet rich in fruit and vegetables can benefit from a detox

programme as the main focus is also stress relief and essentially re-balancing the mind. Stress can directly impact health and the Amatara recognises and targets this perfectly in their programmes with the combination of spa and holistic treatments, yoga and juice cleanses. Feeling refreshed after a peaceful night’s sleep with nothing but the occasional cricket song to stir us, we started the programme with gusto after being guided through what to expect and a full itinerary with our highlyknowledgeable guides. There was a detailed medical consultation before we began the process which was both reassuring and enlightening. Jill the nurse who performs the colon hydrotherapy treatments was able to tell us about all the benefits of the specialised treatment, which was admittedly, one of the most daunting prospects of the programme but an essential one to complete the cleanse. The medical consultation is thorough and helps the therapists and medical practitioners to identify any health issues and concerns. It also allows them to tailor-make your programme and ensures you are getting the

most out of each individual stage of the detox. The detox programme focuses on emotional well-being as well as physical and many of the spa treatments have a healing effect and can give an up-lifting boost; in particular the rebalancing chakra treatments which helps with the body’s flow of energy between seven key points. This is highly recommended for those under severe stress or those who have suffered a huge emotional event or upheaval. Many of the treatments may bring up areas of concern you never even knew you had, so whether you are concerned with digestive bloating or have simply been neglecting yourself and feeling low; a programme such as this is the ideal tonic. Later, we were introduced to Phoebe the Wellness Director who as a trained homeopath took a complete holistic approach when evaluating our lifestyles, experiences and general health. Her knowledge was impressive and she managed to identify different areas of ‘blockages’ and negative energy which she brought to the surface instinctively and then worked upon later that day with a chakra balancing treatment. AWAKENINGSME.COM | SPRING 2017 | 9

AwakenedPeople AwakenedTravel

Daunted by the prospect of no solid meals throughout our programme we started the first day of juice cleansing with a slight headache, which we were told is normal to expect as the body adjusts to being withdrawn from caffeine and sugar and other refined foods so prominent in the average diet. Surprisingly, we didn’t crave any foods and our supplements and range of exotic juice blends felt like plenty and by the third day it even began to feel ‘normal’. Our energy levels increased, we felt increasingly more relaxed and at peace with the beautiful surrounding nature and quite literally felt our worries drift away. Having refrained from processed and solid foods, our bodies felt leaner and less bloated and the colon hydrotherapy definitely helped. Whilst our bodies repaired themselves with healthy juicing and yoga sessions, we were excited to visit the spa and sample the treatments that would complement our new healthier routine and provide deep contemplation and relaxation. It was an interesting concept having never really considered the mind to be just as important as the body when it comes to detoxing and healing. The spa, which specialises in Thai Hammam (a combination of ancient Turkish spa rituals, honouring the bathing traditions of Morocco with the sensitive and healing touch of Thai spa therapy) was breathtaking and truly stunning with 180-degree views of the Andaman sea and Phuket in the near distance. It felt worlds away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and we felt instantly at ease. Our therapists were highly-skilled and knowledgeable and quickly identified areas of tension and blockages that would need addressing to help us feel relaxed and revitalised. The Chi Nei Tsang treatment was a particular highlight. This treatment, originating from Thailand and based on the principles of traditional Chinese medicine, focuses primarily on the abdomen and is quite often referred to as ‘the inner organ’ massage by therapists. The sixty-minute treatment is an ideal complement prior to the colon hydrotherapy and helps by eliminating built up and waste in the digestive systems by stimulating the natural lymphatic drainage system within the body. treatment is included in all three of the detox packages and is perfect for those who are looking to de-stress and unwind. Centred around the Ayurvedic principles of Kapha, Pitta and Vatta body types, the massage is tailored to each individual and focuses on stress relief and the body’s central nervous system. Using a base of deeply-nourishing natural oils and aromatherapy, the massage helps you feel uplifted, re-focused and improves alertness. Perfect for those who are used to being on the go all the time and wish to feel revitalised. The spa offers a range of treatments which you can add on to your package. Choose from Reiki, thermal massage or a relaxing ninety- minute lavender massage, ideal for those suffering from insomnia or lack of sleep. If you’re staying for longer you

can vary your days with a massage master class whereby you and a partner learn massage techniques to use at home, a private yoga master class or even a Wellness Thai cooking class with Executive Chef Bryan so you can sample the delights of the Far East from the comfort of your own home. After five days of treatments and a delicious juice cleanse we left feeling not only physically leaner, lighter and less bloated, but also emotionally more positive and refreshed and with far more energy than we could have imagined. The beautiful sounds of the ocean waves and birdsong stays ringing in your ears long after you’ve left and a renewed sense of positivity means you’re more likely to continue your healthy new habits at home.

A CO N V E R SAT I O N WI T H . . .

Wiso

We can see more and more people drawn to the beauty of the spiritual and holistic world. With the number of wellness centers opening up in Dubai, Awakenings/Reema Aidasani speaks to Wiso Barakeh, founder of Taijitu House of Om, a community centre launched in 2016 offering a free range of wellness and holistic activities, with the objective of reaching out to peoples heart and spreading happiness.

The founder of Taijitu House of Om Tell us a little about yourself? I am Syrian and I have lived most of my life in Dubai. I have a passion for the Mind, Body and Spirit connection. I am a certified Hypnotherapist, I have also studied and practice Reiki (Life force Energy), NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programing), EFT (Emotional Freedom techniques) and Life coaching.

Tell us about Taijitu House of OM (THO) THO, is my home, where I live, it’s not just a typical house! It’s a hOMe that aims to reach out to people’s hearts by spreading happiness, positivity and well-being. This happens through free activities such as meditations, yoga, NLP, life coaching, sound healing, body movement through the sound of traditional instruments, knowledge sharing through book clubs and soul cinema etc The house is a shared space for alternative healers, thinkers, mind body and soul specialists, as well as people interested in cultural evolution and self-development. It is a space where people from various backgrounds can gather and learn from each other with tolerance and love. All the events are free, yet not in a way most people think. My rule of thumb is to always ask people attending the house events to 'pay it forward', to balance their energy by doing something good elsewhere and spread the positive experience to others.

What was your inspiration to open your home to help others? I grew up in a culture of Arabic hospitality, and I strongly believe that our personal happiness comes from spreading happiness around us. Starting with ourselves, and then close family and friends, followed by the community and then beyond. By helping others, we are equally helping ourselves. I feel very blessed to be living in the UAE and being a contributor to its happiness, the country has given me so much over the years. I feel honoured and inspired to give back by building a community of like-minded people who want to expand through self-improvement at all levels. It is all about the grow to grow concept, where in order for us to grow, we need to help people around us grow, and by helping them grow, we grow ourselves. In a nutshell, one can give so much more when they work on their self-growth and thereafter build sustainability all around; 16 | AWAKENINGSME.COM | SPRING 2017

That is what inspired me to build Taijitu House of Om, as a place where people gather to grow starting from within & expand into the wider environment through the help of healing arts and mind- body practices. It is the "pay it forward" concept.

At what age did you realise that you were on a path to spiritual awakening? From a very young age, I had some existential questions that concerned me. Although all of us have a spirit, it is up to us to choose to acknowledge it and follow the spiritual path. I remember a teacher of mine at elementary school told me ‘This book belongs to you’. I paused, my book, my body, my soul, my mind? At that moment I started to question “Who am I, what is inside of me and who does my body, mind and soul belong to? And at that early age, I started to create fun breathing exercises on my 40 minutes walks to school. The power of breathing was a breakthrough, as at any given moment we are merely a combination of thoughts and breath. And hence my journey began.

What is the idea behind starting Taijitu House of Om In 1996, I had a journal which is the only one I still have. In that year, I envisioned my life dreams. It was about a community center where like-minded people get together, and has its own newsletter! In June 2016 my dream came true, an old villa with more than 15 different rooms found its way to me through a friend. At that time the villa was literally a pile of rubble. Without hesitation, I took time off from my daily job as a Regional Finance Manager and focused on remodeling the house using my intuition to design every corner. I worked day and night and in a very short period, with lots of personal investment and sweat Taijitu House of Om saw the light and was born!

What is the story behind the name of the House? The name has 2 symbols that represent how I perceive the world. Taijitu: often simply called the Yin Yang symbol in western countries, represents the concept of opposites existing in harmony, it is about balanced life, accepting the duality of our physical world, heaven and earth, life and death, the cycle of seasons as hot replaces cold, day and night, male and female. Basically, it’s about living in balance and harmony without seeking perfection. AWAKENINGSME.COM | SPRING 2017 | 17

AwakenedPeople

While Om or Aum is the sound that encompasses all sounds in the universe, it is the essence at which all existing matter vibrates. The sound of the heart and Om has no religious connotation and its vibration has been scientifically proven. The Biblical word 'Amen' and Koranic word 'Ameen' mirror the OM sound as they represent a connection with the divine essence of all that exists. The frequency of OM sound is 7.83 Hz which is the same as earth's frequency.

AwakenedPeople

What are your future plans? I plan to work on a project that will help to create financial stability for low income families, mainly women and young workers on a global level.

Your favourite hangout spot in Dubai? Taijitu House Of Om !

Your hobbies? Who is THO open to? It's open to all, regardless of age, nationality or beliefs. However, when it comes to practitioners or workshop leaders I am very selective to ensure any events are in line with the vision and values of the house.

Mind body and spirit related practices, mountain climbing, hiking, horse riding and diving.

Favourite movie? Pay It Forward

Tell us a little about the interiors of the House The house interiors are the reflection of my inner world, vision and values. It has a lot of symbols that reflect the tolerance between different cultures and religions. I invite everyone to come and discover it with their own eyes.

What sets you apart from the others in the field? I never compare myself to others in the field, as my motto is to strive and be better every day in every way. And what makes Taijitu House of Om unique is the progress in all that we do; it is not the one-time achievement or initiative. Just getting things done will not make us happy, it might excite us momentarily. The secret in spreading real happiness is the progress, it is the journey that makes us and the people around us feel alive.

Describe a normal day in your life? After doing my morning practice (meditation/yoga or sport) I head to the office to attend to all my duties as a Regional Finance Manager at a Multinational Pharmaceutical company. Later in the evening, my Taijitu “day” starts. This is where I focus on tasks related to the house, community service, meetings, planning for up-coming events, and prepare agendas to host or lead workshops and so on. While doing that, I do my best to attend to my personal relationships and interests. 18 | AWAKENINGSME.COM | SPRING 2017

Favourite quote? Here I would like to mention 2 that I truly believe in: “Positivity is a way of thinking, and happiness is a lifestyle.” HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum “The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.” Steve Jobs

General facts about the House Opened on 5th Of June 2016. AwakenedPeople AwakenedHealth

AwakenedPeople AwakenedHealth

We are exposed to toxins on a daily basis. We eat foods, drink liquids, and breathe air that contains many chemicals that are foreign and harmful to our bodies. The Western diet is filled with artificial flavours and additives, colouring agents, preservatives, pesticides, chemical fertilisers, hormones, and rancid oils. They accumulate in our bodies over the years and greatly compromise our health. In addition to foods our bodies are subjected to environmental chemicals on a daily basis.

A

long with the onslaught of environmental toxins, we are faced with naturally occurring wastes produced by our body. Free radicals, which are formed when normal oxygen molecules lose an electron, damage our bodies. While the body is accustomed to a number of free radicals and normally deals with them adequately, too much exercise, excessive stress, and a toxic system can cause an over-abundance of free radicals that puts a strain on body cells, leads to premature aging, and causes damaging effects to health.

THE RISKS OF TOXIC BOWEL: We also face the risk of being poisoned by a toxic bowel. Poor food choices, food allergies, full spectrum antibiotics that kill natural intestinal flora, constipation, and the overgrowth of detrimental bacteria create a condition called autointoxication. In a compromised state, the bowel is unable to rid the body of toxins, so they are reabsorbed

into the blood stream. These excess toxins and undesirable bacteria interfere with proper enzyme function, which in turn prevents normal cell activity, particularly in the brain and nervous system. When the bowel is slow in emptying its waste, other organs of detoxification such as the kidneys, liver, lungs, lymph system, and skin become overworked and exhausted. The liver, in particular, shifts into higher activity, producing large amounts of age-promoting free radicals. A toxic bowel hampers all phases of liver detoxification. In this overburdened state, the body is no longer able to rid itself of wastes. Energy levels suffer, and eventually sickness and disease occur. At first, symptoms of toxic overload are mild to moderate. Fatigue, obesity, skin rashes, sore throats, sinus congestion, headaches, depression, hives, constipation, and frequent colds may all be symptoms of toxic overload. Many of these symptoms are

mistaken for other health problems and are treated with medications that increase toxin levels. The root of the problem, toxic over load, continues to be ignored.

THE LIVER’S ROLE IN DETOXIFICATION: The liver is essential to detoxification. It must eliminate toxins that are taken into the body from the environment, created by the body, or reabsorbed into the blood from a toxic bowel. This is why it is important to cleanse the bowel before or in conjunction with cleansing the liver. There are several ways that the liver helps with detoxification. It filters the blood to remove toxins. It also produces bile, a substance that carries many toxins to the bowel for disposal. Fiber in the bowel absorbs the toxic bile and eliminates it from the body. Another way the liver cleanses is by producing an array of essential enzymes that help to break down toxins, rendering them harmless. AWAKENINGSME.COM | SPRING 2017 | 21

AwakenedHealth AwakenedPeople

So, as toxins enter the liver, they can be filtered, combined with bile, disassembled, or converted into less harmful substances by enzymes before being excreted out of the body Whenever you are exposed to toxic chemicals on a regular basis or for extended periods of time (such as when painting a room in your home during the winter and there is no way to assure proper ventilation), you should eat foods rich in glutathione or take oral supplements. Fresh fruits and vegetables are your best good sources of glutathione.

THE LYMPH SYSTEM AND DETOXIFICATION: The lymph system is comprised of lymphatic vessels that run parallel to the blood veins in the body. The vessels of the lymph system are filled with a fluid called lymph that is collected from the space between the cells in the body. The lymph fluids feed the cells of the body by transporting various nutrients such as salts, minerals, and proteins to every cell of the body. Likewise, lymph fluid carries cell wastes and debris that accumulate from normal cell function away and turns them over to the blood. The blood shuttles the wastes to the kidneys, lungs, colon, and skin for elimination. The lymph system can be thought of as the cellular toxin disposal system. Lymph fluid travels to nodes found in various places in the lymph system. There are over six hundred lymph nodes in our bodies, with a particularly large concentration found in the neck, groin, armpits, and abdomen. Immune cells called macrophages are found in the lymph nodes. They engulf and destroy many foreign and toxic particles. Lymph nodes also contain b lymphocytes that produce antibodies to protect the body from future viruses, bacteria, yeast, and other organisms. In a healthy state, lymph nodes are about the size of almonds. However, when they are overloaded with excess toxins, they swell and become painful. This occurs when the body experiences colds and infections. The lymph system is vital in helping to fight disease. One way to keep the lymph system healthy is to eat foods that do not cause excessive congestion. Excessive and 22 | AWAKENINGSME.COM | SPRING 2017

partially digested proteins, highly refined foods, excessive sweets, and dairy increase lymphatic congestion. Limiting these foods improves lymph function. Another way to keep the lymphatic system function is through regular exercise. Unlike the circulatory system, the lymphatic system does not have a pump. The contraction of the muscles in the body keeps the lymph fluids flowing. The work of feeding the cells and removing toxins is imperative. Keeping the lymph system in optimal condition is a big influence on your state of health.

NOTE: Common Health Signs that You Need to Detoxify - Frequent, unexplained headaches or back or joint pain, or arthritis, chronic respiratory problems, sinus problems or asthma abnormal body odor, bad breath or coated food allergies, poor digestion or chronic constipation with intestinal bloating or gas, brittle nails and hair, psoriasis,

adult acne, or unexplained weight gain over 10 pounds, unusually poor memory, chronic insomnia, depression, irritability, chronic fatigue, environmental sensitivities especially to odors.

CONCLUSION: Addressing the overall health improvement of the body is essential to obtaining optimal health. Just as you change the oil in your car on a regular basis, proper cleansing should be practiced at regular cyclic intervals. Cleansing the colon and liver is the first and most important step when beginning nutritional programmes to increase overall well-being (or weight loss). Having healthy lymph function acts as a major protection against environmental and internal toxins. Cleansing or fasting and detoxification has been a part of healing protocols for centuries and is more vital today than in any period of history because of the hostile environment we live in. For longevity and health, cleansing is a must!

Eating Mindfully

We all eat every day, and the food we choose can be a powerful influence on our wellbeing, health, energy and mood. How we eat is just as important. Mindful attention to the simple act of eating has the potential to transform your health significantly for the better. Eating mindfully promotes a healthy body weight, more conscious food choices, and healthier digestion. It also ensures optimum absorption of nutrients, optimum energy from what you eat, and increases self-awareness. | WORDS BY PHOEBE BOONKERD | SPRING 2017

Eat slowly, chew food well If there is one food habit that you should adopt long term, this is the one it should be. Chew each mouthful to a liquid state before you swallow and put your eating utensils down between mouthfuls. This gives your digestive system a chance to communicate to your brain more effectively that you are full and also gives you a chance to listen to that signal, resulting in smaller portion intake. We are more likely to overeat when we gulp our food and do not chew. Proper chewing initiates digestive enzyme secretion, and increases the surface area of food, resulting in improved nutrient absorption and digestion. Try eating slowly, chewing each mouthful up to 20-40 times

Hara Hachi Bu to you! This is a cultural habit - Eat until 80 Percent Full - practiced on the island of Okinawa, Japan, one of the world’s most healthiest and long-living population groups. Studies show that those who practice Hara Hachi Bu consume 30% fewer calories than average, or who practice Hara Hachi Bu, actually age more slowly and live longer. This light under-eating at each meal also optimises digestion and reduces common symptoms such as gas, bloating, belching and other discomforts.

Eat well

AwakenedPeople AwakenedHealth

and fresh or sautéed vegetables are all great options. Overall, increasing the volume of vegetable intake in favour of carbohydrate staples (bread, rice, pasta), and maintaining a protein food at each meal supports balanced energy and a healthy body weight. Eat sensible sized portions approximately every 4 hours, allowing a healthy appetite for each meal. 3 meals plus an afternoon snack is a pattern that suits most people.

Make sure there is a ‘fast’ to break! Ideally, make sure that the time between dinner and breakfast is a 12-hour fast. Digestion slows down at night, and we need fuel for the day. This simple fact means that the body is designed for a healthy, good-sized breakfast before 9am, a substantial lunch before 1pm, and a light dinner that finishes by 8pm for the body to renew, detoxify and rest as we sleep. It’s best to stop eating 3 hours before sleeping. If your schedule is far away from this ideal, do what you can to gradually shift it. If you must eat late, vegetable soup is recommended, as it is easy to digest, filling and less likely to burden your system, which promotes weight gain and ‘morning fog’. If you aren’t hungry for breakfast, you probably ate too much, too late the night before.

Eat to live, rather than live to eat

Nourish your body with as many high quality foods you can afford or obtain. Your body is the vehicle in which you travel through life, and it deserves the best fuel so it serves you well into the future. The human body needs an abundance of plant foods, mostly vegetables as the dominant food group, supplemented by quality proteins, good fats and a smaller proportion of grains and root vegetables. Eat a rainbow of colour and variety of foods every day. This is the foundational principle of healthy eating and as a general philosophy, and as a lifestyle choice it is the golden rule.

Healthy eating can be applied to what the Taoist philosophy calls ‘going in two directions at once’. This means, in one direction, focus on eating healthy food, get organised, sort out how you can logistically eat healthily, who is preparing it, to what recipes, and what you plan to eat, and then, and in the other direction, let food go a little, don’t make it the main focus of your life. Eat mindfully in the act itself, and then get on with your daily tasks, forget about food for a while.

Time your meals well, and always eat breakfast

If you have digestive problems, this is especially important, and you may get a lot of insight from a food and symptom diary. Fruits should be eaten alone, or before meals, never after, as this compromises digestion and encourages gas. Avoid drinking a lot of fluid

It is important to start your day with a healthy breakfast – make time to savour and enjoy it - smoothies, juices, organic eggs, wholegrain porridges, grainy bread, avocado, 26 | AWAKENINGSME.COM | SPRING 2017

Avoid poor combinations or foods that burden your body

with your meals as this also compromises digestion. Take notice the effects of the foods you eat, and avoid foods that you associate with discomfort or excessive fatigue. Food intolerance testing is very useful for ascertaining individual sensitivities.

What about cravings? Sugar and carb cravings are a symptom of poor nutrition and fatigue. The intensity of cravings can be used as a barometer of how stressed, fatigued or poorly nourished you are. A more balanced eating plan can be of great assistance in preventing this. Sleep, emotional issues and stress are also essential to address and have a direct effect on cravings, eating patterns, and body weight.

How much is enough? We all have slightly different needs in terms of portion sizes, but it is safe to say that many of us overeat routinely, which makes us lose our sense of how much we should actually eat. To re-connect with this, one of the best techniques is to eat slowly. Another helpful technique is to use your own hand as a guide. This gives a good estimate, based on your body size: PER MEAL: Protein foods: the size and thickness of your own palm, or a handful of non-animal proteins such as beans and tofu

Non-starchy vegetables: 2-3 large handfuls (2 cooked, 3 raw) Carb staples: as much as could fit in your own cupped hand Fats: no more than your first three fingerssize portion of nuts or seeds or 1 tablespoon of cold pressed oil per meal

You are what you eat! It’s a plain fact! Eat lots of starch and simple sugars (bread, pastries, candy, chocolate, alcohol, potatoes, etc.) and you will become overweight (excess sugars in the body are converted into fatty acids which are stored as fat). Eat fried food and not only are you saturating your body, arteries and veins with gunk, but that gunk is in a free radical state. You’ve heard of free radicals right? It’s what everybody’s telling you to avoid

by taking anti-oxidants. Well even better, combine flour with high heated Trans-fat oils (as in French fries, donuts, fritters, etc.) and you have a recipe for obesity, Diabetes, and chronic disease. YOU NEED to eat fruits and vegetable if you are going to be truly healthy. That’s a fact! Learn to immerse yourself in the wonders of the plant kingdom. You’ll glow for it.

Eat in peace Eating in stressful environments, such as over your keyboard, an argument or intense conversation, a TV show, in a mindless haze in the car, or when you are stressed or upset is hard on your digestive function and promotes digestive disturbance, overeating, too much of the wrong foods, guilt, and a bad relationship with food as a crutch for stressful emotions. Eat in a place where you can be calm, with minimal conversation of light topics, if any. Create a feeling of ceremony, with some aesthetically appealing table settings, bowls, and implements. Treat eating as an important act, and a chance to relax 3 times a day. Savour the moment, the environment, the company (even your own) and the flavours.

LOVE YOUR

LIVER

The consequences of mistreating the liver include obesity, a higher incidence of cardiovascular disease, chronic fatigue, headaches, digestive problems, allergies and many other ailments. And although the immune system protects our body from many dangers, it is the liver that protects the immune system from overload. | WORDS BY PHOEBE BOONKERD

any people struggle with excessive weight and sluggish metabolism all their lives finding that, as they age, they gradually gain more weight and become resigned to a large protruding abdomen and stubborn fat deposits. After years of dieting they believe that nothing can possibly lead to lasting relief. Something is obviously wrong, something is missing. Keeping the liver clean and healthy helps to reduce weight, improve digestion and prevent health problems developing in later life. When we take care of the liver, stress, frustration and mood changes can also be minimised.

28 | AWAKENINGSME.COM | SPRING 2017

The liver is the primary site of hormone metabolism, and also has a huge task of detoxifying the chemicals, pesticides and pollution we are exposed to every day. When we consider this it makes sense to take care of it by eating as fresh, vital and unprocessed diet as possible. Fresh vegetable juices are a great way to boost antioxidant intake, and are very cleansing for the liver and whole body. If possible, try to have a fresh juice every morning. Include lemon/ lime, as these stimulate the liver and help the bowels to move in the morning. Alternatively, you can simply drink lime or lemon juice, a little honey and hot water each morning, ideally AWAKENINGSME.COM | SPRING 2017 | 29

30 minutes before breakfast, to cleanse the liver and stimulate digestion. It is better to have more vegetable-based juices than fruits, to avoid the high sugar content. Similarly, carrot juice should only be taken in moderation. EXAMPLE COMBINATIONS: • Green apple, ginger, celery, parsley, lemon, mint • Carrot, kale, lime, celery, beetroot, ginger, wheatgrass • Cucumber, kale, mint, green apple, parsley • Carrot, beet, celery, capsicum, celery • Lime, carrot, cinnamon • Aloe, mint, apple • Or a fruit smoothie: fresh orange juice, papaya, mixed berries and spirulina powder THE FOLLOWING FOODS WOULD ALSO BENEFIT YOUR LIVER FUNCTION: Increase deeply coloured vegetables and fruits: • Dark leafy greens - daily! Kale, baby spinach, dark lettuces, rocket, etc, cooked and raw. Kale is especially detoxifying • Berries of all kinds - these are wonderful, rich sources of antioxidants. Have frozen or fresh blueberries, cherries, mulberries, blackberries. (berries are reasonably low in sugars) • All vegetables and fruits have their own unique blend of antioxidants that cleanse the body and reduce inflammation, eat as varied and seasonally available as possible

TIPS TO IMPROVE YOUR LIVER Drink 8-12 glasses of filtered water daily Avoid eating large amounts of sugar

Turmeric - this is wonderful for the liver, and had antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Even dietary amounts make a difference. Turmeric also improves flexibility and recovery from exercise or injury.

Globe Artichoke protects and regenerates the liver, and increases fat metabolism in the liver.

Fresh herbs, orange, red and yellow coloured vegetables; squash, carrot, capsicum, citrus peel (lots of antioxidant content of citrus fruits is in the peel and pith). Green tea - serve with citrus peel for extra antioxidants Lecithin granules - these are available from most health foods stores. The liver uses the nutrients in lecithin for emulsifying fats and excreting them through bile. They also provide nutrients for the brain and help with memory. They are a very useful food supplement, just add then to your cereal, smoothie or other breakfast in the morning (They are usually in a granular form).

Beetroot - this improves the function of the liver by stimulating the regeneration of liver tissue and stimulating the metabolism of Fats in the liver. It should be a regular dietary inclusion. A good way to eat it is grated raw with lemon juice, cracked pepper, a little olive oil and chopped fresh garlic.

Do not eat if you feel stressed or anxious Check if organically-grown fresh produce, free of pesticides, is available in your area Obtain your protein from diverse sources, including legumes

FOODS AND HABITS THAT CONGEST THE LIVER INCLUDE: • All fried fats and saturated (animal) fats • Sugar • Coffee and other caffeine containing foods • Over eating • Eating late at night • Alcohol, in any amount • White flour; bread, pasta, pastry, cakes, biscuits, etc • Dehydration • Nutrient deficiency

Avoid constipation Avoid excessive saturated or damaged fats Choose your breads and spreads wisely Don’t eat if you are not hungry Avoid all artificial sweeteners

PROTEIN FOODS Use fresh garlic in the diet as often as possible.

PROTEIN FOODS - fish, protein powder (should be at least 80% protein, unsweetened), raw nuts and seeds, chicken, lean meat, tofu, legumes, or eggs. It is essential that adequate amounts of protein are eaten for proper liver function and also for the regeneration of all body tissues. This means at least two palm-sized servings daily. There are many herbal medicines for supporting and cleansing the liver. St Mary’s Thistle (or Milk Thistle) is one very well known one. Below is a list of herbs you would commonly find in a liquid or tablet form in a health food shop: Silybum marianum (St Mary’s Thistle) Taraxicum officinalis (Dandelion) Cynara scolymus (Globe Artichoke) Curcuma longa (Tumeric) Gentiana lutea (Yellow Gentian) Schisandra chinensis (Schisandra) Chinanthus virginicus (Fringe Tree)

Brassica family vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts). All these sulfur containing veggies contain compounds that help the liver effectively detoxify.

What type of approach do you have when you preparing your patients for surgery? Once the procedure is agreed upon, we explain in detail the postoperative journey to be expected and how the patient is now required to enhance the surgeons’ work by following closely the instructions given. Post-op visits to the clinic are scheduled and need to be honoured so the surgeon can keep a close eye on the recovery process. Pre-surgery tests are done and the patient always has a consultation with the anaesthetist. We offer a computer imaging consultation so the patient can understand the limits of the surgical technique and the surgeon can verify if it is possible to achieve the patient’s expectations. This is particularly helpful in nose surgery. We offer all kinds of pre and post op help to our patients such as lymphatic drainage, skin care before and after the facelift and more. All patients are educated and advised on how to best maintain their new form through post-operative care, this coupled with an intelligent diet and exercise routine ensures the best results.

A COMBINATION OF INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL BEAUTY Highly renowned and Dubai based plastic surgeon Dr. Luiz Toledo is a leading light in the ever changing field of cosmetic procedures. With a wealth of experience and a stellar reputation which he has deservedly earnt through time, he is the elusive mix that UAE residents trust when making the decision when and if to have invasive or non-invasive procedures.

S

ocial media bombards us with images of beautiful people who appear to have it all. This leads to us asking questions like… If only I had a flatter stomach, then I would feel comfortable in a bikini. If my nose was smaller, would I be more confident. Dr. Toledo performs hundreds of cosmetic procedures for these very beauty concerns. But, he's also here to tell you, “not so fast,” when it comes to your internal “if only” dialogue. As much as surgeons love to perform surgery, sometimes it is not the answer and not in the best interest of a patient. BEAUTY AND SELF-ESTEEM Beauty is a powerful thing. attraction to beauty is hard wired into humanity's DNA, so there's no escaping the fact that beauty truly does matter. It is inescapable and natural to desire beauty, and there is no doubt that increasing physical beauty can increase one's positive body image. What we need to remember is that beauty is not the only aspect that needs to be addressed for a healthy self-esteem. Many people try to work on the external beauty without addressing the internal beauty…. This is impossible as the two are entwined in a spiral relationship, and a balance is the key to success. A positive body image is achieved in many ways, including diet, exercise, surgical or non-invasive procedures. A combination of these is powerful and achieves long lasting results. Sometimes, unflattering physical characteristics like asymmetric breasts, loose skin after pregnancy, disproportionate facial features or physical deformities cause mental anguish and aren't treatable with diet and exercise alone. These individuals are good candidates for surgical procedures. Dr Luiz, how long have you been practicing, and when did you open your surgery in Dubai? I have been practicing as a Plastic Surgeon for more than 35 years and have been involved with the teaching and the organisation of Congresses around the world for almost as long. I started working in Dubai and the Middle East initially as a visiting surgeon in 2004, settling permanently in Dubai in 2006.

36 | AWAKENINGSME.COM | SPRING 2017

In the ever changing world of cosmetic procedures and technologies, are there any that you feel are outstanding (cutting edge or tried and tested), and which achieve the best results? I can say that I have been using Coolplas (cryotherapy for localised fat deposits) now for 5 years with very good results. We can now offer our patients, who are reluctant to go into surgery, an option to reduce local fat deposits with the use of this machine. It is clear that surgery is an excellent option for many men and women who want to bolster their self-esteem. In your experience after performing countless procedures, do you find that your patients have a better sense of wellbeing after procedures/surgery? I am happy to say that yes, the majority of my patients have a better sense of wellbeing after the surgery. From the start we discuss all options available, patients expectations and realistic outcomes, this allows us to decide upon the best and most appropriate procedure. Thereafter it is a case of the surgeon using his experience and technical skills to deliver the results. Patient expectation is one of the big questions that need to be understood and addressed fully during the initial consultation. There are many occasions when the patients’ expectation cannot be met, for example, undergoing a breast implant surgery will probably not win back your husband. Similarly, a patient expecting the results of a facelift, but only willing to undergo Botox injections and fillers can only be disappointed. In your consultations with patients, what is the process of evaluating how best to achieve their goals, and when to progress from noninvasive to invasive surgery? During the consultation, we will of course discuss the patient’s goals for the surgery if that is the route we decide to go. Often a patient will bring in a photograph of the look he or she wants. This is helpful and I can immediately evaluate if this is going to be achievable or not. The non-invasive techniques, although not entirely, are best suited to younger patients. Invasive surgery is usually prescribed for the older patient where skin quality and laxity is becoming an issue.

Prof. Dr. Luiz Toledo Consultant Plastic Surgeon Dr. Luiz Toledo, Brazilian Plastic Surgeon, studied in São Paulo and went on to train and specialise under Prof. William Callia graduating as a plastic and reconstructive surgeon in 1975 and becoming a member of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery – SBCP - in 1976. While maintaining his practice and working around the Middle East region since 2001, Dr. Toledo moved to Dubai in 2006 with his family. Over the past 30 years Dr. Toledo has been involved in lecturing and teaching around the world. He has written and edited 14 books and published more than 60 scientific papers and guest edited editions of Clinics in Plastic Surgery. He has given teaching courses on his face and body contouring techniques at the ASPS and ASAPS congress for the last15 years. He was ISAPS Course Director for seven years, organising courses all over the World. He has organised annual symposiums in Belgrade, Serbia for over 10 years. He is currently the scientific director of the Emirates Plastic Surgery Society and organises monthly meetings for the local plastic surgeons. His most recent meetings were the First Dubai ISAPS Course in Jan 2014 and the First and Second EPSS Congress in Dubai in October 2015 and 2016 as the Scientific Director.

The

Skin

and how to really take care of it!

Every day we are losing millions upon millions of skin cells‌ in doing so we are also losing elasticity, smoothness and the loss of brightness to the skin as a build-up of cells stay on the surface layer called the Epidermis. | WORDS BY KATRINA VALENTE

I

n order to keep your skin in excellent condition we must use good quality and effective skincare products, eat well, drink plenty of water, exercise and keep smoking and alcohol to a minimum. The skin is one of the largest organs of the body in surface area and weight. It has three main functions: protection, regulation and sensation. We forget that it is not just the skin on the face that needs attention but the full body. As an Aesthetician, of course, the face takes priority but just for a moment let’s think about the body, what can we do to keep it smooth, hydrated and wrinkle free? One of the best things you can do is exfoliate with salt scrub mixed in with coconut oil, olive oil or almond oil (I make and sell my own with essential oils). It has

40 | AWAKENINGSME.COM | SPRING 2017

several functions; it eliminates negative energy around the auric field, smoothes the skin and moisturises at the same time with the use of the oils; it saves you from using a separate moisturiser and leaves your skin super soft. As a guide exfoliate a few times per week but not too often and less so if you have sensitive skin as it can be a little too much. This will do wonders for the texture of your skin it will make you feel alive and cleanses the aura into the bargain. Do it after you shower while your skin is still wet, then let the water run over your body to wash away the salt just leaving the nourishing oil behind, then pat yourself dry. Body moisturizers are just as important as face creams to keep the skin smooth, soft and tight. Nourishing is the word for the body as it is definitely not AWAKENINGSME.COM | SPRING 2017 | 41

as well taken care of as the face and we tend to get very dry as we are covered up or sun exposed, neither particularly good. Body creams with AHA are also a good idea as they naturally exfoliate the skin keeping it fresh and renewed. Coming back to the face, a proper daily routine is a must and the younger you start the better! Simple cleansing and toning with a moisturiser or a moisturising sunblock for teens, no need to go any higher than SPF30, after that they become quite chemical which could lead to other problems like acne or pigmentation. Girls over 25 need to start with cleanser, toner, moisturiser and perhaps even an eye cream, I’ve always maintained that prevention is better than cure!! After 30 start getting into the specific serums for skin type and 42 | AWAKENINGSME.COM | SPRING 2017

correction. By the time a person reaches 40 this is the age where you can tell how well they have looked after themselves! Although I will say it is never too late to reverse the ageing process, there is always a way! Serums are always a fast way to get quick results as they penetrate quickly into the skin and target specific problems like pigmentation, acne, wrinkles and so on. The golden rule is they go on after the toner under the moisturiser. Nowadays we are fortunate that a lot of professional skincare companies do one cream for day and night. This saves the ordeal of looking for a day cream and a night cream but to play devil's advocate, a day cream is to protect whereas a night cream is to nourish. Although at night everything in the body slows down, everything to do with the skin speeds up and this is where

The skin is one of the largest organs of the body in surface area and weight. It has three main functions: protection, regulation and sensation.

the regeneration process takes place hence needing a more nourishing cream. Professional products versus over the counter products. In general professional products spend money on the ingredients whereas over the counter products spend on marketing and packaging. Professional products will always have much more active ingredients and this is where the difference lies. Quicker, better, longer lasting results, hands down. Your skin is a living organ just remember that! If you want to keep looking good as you age you can quite easily just take a little time to give back to you through using good skincare products, having regular facials (of course!), eating well, drinking lots of water, exercising and getting a good nights sleep! YE A R O F T H E

Rooster The mischievous Monkey passed the baton to the calculating Rooster on the 28th January 2017, the vibration shifted from playful-mania to a somewhat harsher, sharper tone. Although the Rooster’s humour is famous, its priority is to make a point and then have it taken seriously, even if that point comes submerged within a joke. Now we are in corporate mode let the Machiavellian games begin. | COMPILED BY ZAKARIYA ADEEL

P

urposeful, packaged and pre-planned, Rooster years arrive already knowing where they want to take you; it’s as if one’s “purpose” button is pressed and people just know what it is that they need to prioritise. There is no need to set your alarm clock for when the Rooster year abounds, everyone is cock-a-doodle-doo awakened by its call. Imagine a world when you are always at work and you are always “on”, well, that’s the world of a Rooster. We are gifted with the Roosters flirty nature, eccentricity and capacity for hard work, especially when undertaking work that requires precision. But everyone also just become more sensitive: the Rooster can be

highly critical of others, but does not like to be criticised. So in Rooster years, everyone is slightly more erratic, argumentative and confrontational. A harmless tendency is that people tend to dress in bright colors that do not match! Emotions are relegated in everyday decisions and disciplined action is easier to maintain. However, relationships are difficult to balance. This Rooster really is more of a peacock, a spectacular entertainer that puts on a grand show for all to enjoy. Just don’t forget, whatever happens, this peacock Rooster has every one of its eyes on its objectives. And you will too! This is the Year of the Rooster. AWAKENINGSME.COM | SPRING 2017 | 45

10 easy ways to practice

Mindfulness Learning to practice mindfulness and live in the present moment can transform your life and increase your happiness. Find out how to master mindfulness with these 10 easy and practical steps | WORDS BY ELYSE SANTILLI

H

ave you ever wondered what it means to live in the present? Aren’t we all here, now, in the present? Well yes, beautiful soul, but for so many of us, we are only 10% here. We are really living in our minds. We exist from day-to-day in a dream-like state where we’re not really connected to the world around us, nor centered in our own body or being. Instead, we’re preoccupied with memories of the past, churning thoughts and worries about the future, and judgments and reactions to the few things we do see. Or perhaps we are lost in our smartphones and television sets. We’re literally missing out on most our own lives, which leaves us feeling shallow, empty and deeply unsettled. The great news is, you can learn to be more present and mindful! And it is absolutely worth the effort, because mindful living is living fully. Once you get used to it, it feels like you’ve finally woken up from a dream that’s lasted your whole life up until now. You begin to feel alive and sparkling. You can sense the energy and spirit inside of your body. You suddenly notice more beauty, simple joys and blessings all around you. It’s like someone has turned up the colour setting on the world to transform it from dull greys into an incredible vibrant rainbow. You rarely feel stressed out or overwhelmed, because you know you can slow down time and calm yourself down simply by becoming more present. You suddenly gain more control over your thoughts and emotions – you realise that you are the ruler of your mind, not the other way around. This realisation leads to a growing sense of centeredness, joy, love and inner peace. You can then anchor in this inner peace all throughout the day, even when your external life becomes rough and choppy like the surface of the ocean on a windy day. So how do you become more present?

1

EAT MINDFULLY When you scoff down your meal on autopilot while distracted by the television, computer or constant conversation, you miss out on the delicious taste and smell of your food. You’re also less likely to feel satisfied and nourished, as you ‘missed out’ on the fact that you ate. It can be helpful to remember this phrase: When you eat, eat. When you drink, drink. In other words, don’t attempt to do fifty other things when you sit down to a meal, coffee or green juice. Simply focus all of your attention on what is in front of you.

AwakenedMind

2

WALK MINDFULLY Take a beautiful tip from spiritual leader Thich Nhat Hanh and ‘walk as if you are kissing the earth with your feet’. In others words, when you are out and about, pay attention occasionally to the movement of your body and your surroundings. Notice as your feet connect with and leave the ground. Feel your muscles moving and supporting you. Observe what is going on around you – the sights, sounds and life unfolding. You may be amazed to find a whole new world you hadn’t even noticed before.

3

OBSERVE YOUR BREATHING As Echkart Tolle once said, a single breath in and out is a meditation. Your breathing occurs naturally and rhythmically. When you pay attention to it, it takes you out of your mind and into your body. You momentarily free yourself from your churning thoughts, worries and fears, and you remind yourself of who you really are – your inner spirit, not your thoughts.

4

CONNECT WITH YOUR SENSES Your senses – touch, smell, taste, sound and sight – are your gateway into the present moment. But when you are lost in thought, you don’t experience what your senses are picking up. Pause to soak up the beautiful aroma of your coffee. The salty ocean air. The beauty and diversity of flowers in your neighbourhood. The mouth-watering waft of wood-fire pizza coming from your local Italian restaurant as you pass it. Notice how your clothing feels against your body. The soft clean bed sheets on your skin in the morning. The comforting warmth of your lover’s kiss. The grass under your feet. The sensation of water and suds on your hands as you do the washing up. Put love and attention into the simple tasks of your day, and you will be amazed how much joy and peace they can bring you. 50 | AWAKENINGSME.COM | SPRING 2017

5

LISTEN WHOLEHEARTEDLY Most of us never truly listen to people when they are speaking to us, because we’re too busy planning what to say next, judging what they are saying, or getting lost in daydreams altogether. Next time you’re in a conversation, make it your goal to fully listen to what the other person is saying to you, without getting lost in your thoughts. Trust that you will intuitvely know the right thing to say next when it’s your turn to speak.

6

PAUSE BETWEEN ACTION Pause and listen to the sound of the phone ringing before answering it. Pause and feel the weight of your body in your chair before beginning your work for the day. Pause and feel the door handle of your home before you open it at the end of the day. Putting mini pauses between actions in your day can ground you in your inner being, clear your mind, and provide you with fresh energy for the new task ahead. Think of it like putting energetic bookends at the start and end of each activity.

7

GET LOST IN THE FLOW OF DOING THINGS YOU LOVE We all have certain activities we love doing – they connect us with our inner spirit and bring us fully alive. For you it could be cooking, dancing, singing, gardening, writing, painting, bushwalking, swimming or building Ikea furniture. We love doing these things so much that we often lose ourselves in them. That is, we lose our smaller self – our churning thoughts and worries – because we are pouring all of our love and attention into the present moment. Incorporate more flow activities in your weekly routine, and your happiness will skyrocket.

8

MEDITATE DAILY There’s no getting around it – meditation has huge benefits and increases your levels of energy, happiness, inspiration and inner peace. It doesn’t have to take long. Even ten minutes a day can have a positive impact on your life. It will also strengthen your mindfulness muscles, so you’ll find it much easier to become present throughout the day.

9

TRAVEL OR MIX UP YOUR ROUTINE There’s more than one reason you feel amazing on holidays. When you’re in a new place, you automatically become more present and mindful – simply because there are so many new sights, sounds and smells to soak up. Your senses take over for a short while and it frees you from your mind. No travel plans? That’s fine. Mix up your routine – it will have the same effect. Take a different route, stop at a new coffee shop, visit a new place locally or try something you’ve done done before like paddle boarding, cooking a new recipe or writing calligraphy.

OBSERVE YOUR THOUGHTS AND EMOTIONS You are not your thoughts – you are the observer of your thoughts. The fact that you can listen to them shows that they are not you. You are something higher and separate. By simply becoming aware of your thoughts and nonjudgmentally observing them as they come and go – like clouds passing in the sky – you are being more present. You are not getting caught up in your thoughts and forgetting that they are not you. As you observe, resist the temptation to get carried away by a particular thought down a tunnel into the past or future. Picture your thoughts like trains at the station – you’re on the platform watching them come and go, but you’re not going to jump on and go for a ride. I hope that helps, beautiful soul. I’ll leave you with one of my favourite quotes about becoming more present and mindful: When did life become a race? If we can catch our breath, take a look around and begin to see our life with a renewed sense of appreciation, then the journey itself takes on rich colour and depth, we begin to take in the scenery and all the details. ~ The Gyalwang Drukpa. Our Divine soul mate is already a commitment. Our subconscious knows, our soul knows. We have been together in every dimension, many lifetimes before. There is nothing new; it feels like we have known each other forever. We see them; we love their soul and every aspect of them. | WORDS BY ELIANA ELEFTHERIOU

H

ow do we know when we meet the one, our soul mate? Besides the strong magnetic pull to each other, the instant comfort we feel in his or her company, knowing what they are thinking or feeling from a mere glance or touch. We bask in there self-assurance and the knowledge of an inner understanding of whom they are. We know instantly that they have committed from the heart to us as we feel everything they feel. The energy between the two soulmates is flowing beautifully and effortlessly from the start. There is no significant effort, just a beautiful flow of exchange of beautiful emotions, admiration, passion, love, attraction, nurture, care, support, acceptance, respect… The question here is where can we find them; how and when can we meet them and ultimately be with them. It takes a little work from our part to prepare ourselves for our Divine soul mate as we could easily just miss them by making an alternative choice or no choice at all, based on our fears, needs, anger, revenge or any other toxic emotion or pattern, we have to believe. As the relationship with our Divine soul mate is a commitment from the heart, it takes wisdom, soul healing, self-love, self-appreciation, and living from the heart, qualities and traits which are usually concealed and blocked by our fears, traumas, guilt, pain, doubts… If we meet our Divine soul mate when we are not ready for them, we will not be able to recognise them because our frequencies are not compatible with each other. Divine soulmates relationships are based on a true connection of the heart, it allows them to share their journey and grow spiritually through love, joy and play with a spiritual

loving partner. If our relationship it is not based on true soul travel and it is based on other material factors such as money, social status, co-dependency, safety, the need for someone to feel our inner void, then our partnership will be chaotic, it will be a struggle with an expiry date. For as long as we struggle with self-love, self-acceptance, we need to prove ourselves, we are needy, we need to be rescued or we are looking for someone who needs to be rescued and be fulfilled, we are pushing true love away. We need to love and be proud of ourselves to be whole as a person; otherwise, we will always need to find someone to fulfil us all the time. If we want to be loved, respected and accepted for whom we are, first of all, we need to equally love ourselves without any reservations. The love has always existed inside us, we need to let it rise to the fore otherwise, our fears and insecurities will take over and ruin the relationship. We can altogether eliminate the chance of missing our Divine soul mate if we do our soul research and heal those aspects of us that hold trauma, anger, fear, sabotaging patterns and our inner child. We create the possibility of going through adventures with other partners to teach us how to love ourselves and become happy people with selfacceptance and respect. We need to be in our power, trust and feel proud of who we are, in order to commit ourselves. The higher we vibrate, the closer to our Divine soul mate we are. In a relationship it takes two to tango…it is a dance of love…change your inside to love, so that you may have this dance. AWAKENINGSME.COM | SPRING 2017 | 53

Breathing

is our superpower. WORDS BY BY MARIA PAZ JIMENEZ PENA

One conscious breath in and out is a meditation E. Tolle

54 | AWAKENINGSME.COM | SPRING 2017

round 10 years ago the word spread in Buenos Aires that a renowned master from India would come to town. The purpose of his visit was to teach people how to... breathe! I still remember how ridiculous and funny the concept sounded to me: “How can somebody teach me how to breathe? I surely know how to do that, I’ve been practicing continuously since birth!” With time and study, I came to understand the invisible and powerful role breath has if we are to lead empowered, conscious, stress free lives. According to Dan Brulé, an international Breathwork Master whom I was fortunate enough to meet, 70% of the toxins in our body are released through breathing. Yes, this means that taking long, deep breaths as often as we can is more detoxing than any green smoothie! Taking long deep breaths not only helps us detox physically, but also brings clarity of mind, releases anxiety, helps fight depression and improves our capacity to make conscious decisions.

The way we breath determines the way our mind and body feels. Shallow breaths are a sign of anxiety and puts our body in a fight or flight mode. Taking deep breaths when we find ourselves in such situations has the power to bring ourselves back to a balanced, relaxed state. The ancient science of yoga has known and taught this for millennia: the air we breath is our main life force energy (prana) and through controlling and extending our breath, we are controlling and extending our lives. The longer our breathe is, the longer is our lifespan. To consciously make an effort to bring our awareness back to the gift of each breath should be regarded as the most important daily practice if we are serious about increasing our spiritual awareness and wellbeing. Conscious long breaths not only keeps us young, stress free and balanced but also brings us in sync with the present moment, the only real space where reality happens, the space where gratitude for being alive is the secret power that fuels our every thought and action.

Food Allergy or Food Intolerance? DO YOU SUFFER FROM ANY OF THE FOLLOWING?

HOW CAN THE A FOOD INTOLERANCE TEST HELP

FOOD ALLERGY: • Usually sudden • Small amount of food can trigger • Happens every time you eat the food • Can be life threatening

Gastrointestinal Abdonimal bloating, cramping, excessive wind, water retention, irritiable bowel syndrome, constipation, diarrhoea, colic, vominting, nausea

FOOD INTOLERANCE: • Food irritates your stomach and your body can’t digest it properly • Cramps, bloating • Heart burn • Irritability and nervousness

Central Nervous System Migraine, headache, impaired concentration, mood and behavioural changes, autism, depression, anxiety, fatigue, dizziness and hyperactivitiy.

After you have taken the FoodPrint test you will receive a patient pack which contains your test results as well as detailed patient support guide. With the information you obtain from your test resutls you can make some changes to your eating patterns. If your test shows any positive reations it means that you have an elevated antibody reaction to that particular food and the simple act of removing them from your diet can completely change your life and wellbeing. Reactions for foods can be mild, moderate or strong, and it is advisable to eliminate those foods which have shown a moderate or strong reaction from the diet for 3 months. The majority of people find their symptoms reduce wihin one to three months after cutting out the foods to which they have shown an antibody reaction to.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THESE TWO DISORDERS?

Dermatological Urticaria, atopic dermatitis, eczema, acne, psoriasis, itchy skin and other rashes.

COMMON FOOD ALLERGIES AND INTOLERANCES:

It's pretty common to have a reaction to a certain food, but in most cases it's an intolerance rather than a true allergy. Why does it matter? Although they may have similar symptoms, a food allergy can be more serious. | WORDS BY DR. AHLAM ALI, MBBS- GENERAL PRACTICIONER

F

ood allergy is not the same as food intolerance, but the two are frequently confused. A classical food allergy (such as peanut or shellfish allergy) is usually characterised by an immediate and often severe reaction of the immune system to exposure to a specific food. Food allergy is quite rare with only about 2.5% of the population being diagnosed with the condition. The most common instances of food allergy are to peanuts, tree nuts (almonds and brazils), eggs, milk, fish and shellfish.

• Peanuts • Milk • Tree nuts (walnuts, pecans, almonds) • Eggs • Fish • Soy • Shellfish • Wheat The most common food intolerance is lactose intolerance. It happens when people cannot digest lactose, a sugar found in milk and dairy. Another kind of intolerance is being sensitive to sulfites or other food additives. Sulfites can trigger asthma attacks in some people.

Musculoskelekal Arthritis, joint pain, aching muscles and weakness, fibromyalgia. Respiratory Asthma, rhinitis, sinusitis, wheezing Others Weight gain, weight loss, glue ear, infertility

HOW TO BE TESTED The FoodPrint IgG antibody test is a simple finger prick test that can be done quickly at the clinic. It uses state-of-the-art technoligy which allows more than 220 foods to be rapidly analysed from just one drop of blood. There is no fasting required prior to the test.

SO WHAT EXACTLY IS FOOD INTOLERANCE? Although not life threatening like a food allergy, food intolerance should never be underestimated as its impact on sufferers can be significant, severely impacting on their ability to live normal healthy lives. The most frequent intolerance nowadays is Gluten. Food intolerance is extremely widespread and it is estimated that 45% of the population could be affected. Many people with food intolerance experience more than one symptom. Symptoms can often be vague and the root cause of the problem is food, and it is not always correctly diagnosed. Sufferers often complain of feeling bloated and being tired all the time. 56 | AWAKENINGSME.COM | SPRING 2017

Deena Farms A FAMILY ORGANIC FARM

Regardless of diet, organic foods are a smart priority. Opting for organic foods is an effectual choice for personal and planetary health. Buying organically grown food, free of harmful chemicals, bursting with more nutrition, taste, and sustainable sustenance is a direct vote for immediate health and the hopeful future of generations to come AN INTERVIEW WITH JOHN ANURAG THE GENERAL MANAGER OF DEENA FARMS

Can you tell us when the farm was first started and when you received certified organic status? Deena Organic Farms was started as a family run organic farm in 2005. From the very start we used certified organic seeds and have cultivated them ever since in Dubai. Dubai is unique in agricultural terms and over the years we have learnt much about the crops, some flourish and adapt well to the local climate growing easily whilst others we have to show great patience and adapt methods in order to produce the quality of product we insist upon. As our production exceeded the requirements of the family, we decided to go commercial and we floated this company in 2015 and applied for organic certification with ESMA and were honoured to be awarded certified organic status in 2016.

Please tell us about the dairy aspect of the farm? Deena Dairy is a recent addition to the business it is unique and one of the first in this region. It is an organic home dairy and produces a range of cheeses, paneer and curd using the milk from Deena Farms very own goats and sheep. All animals are free to roam and are fed with organically produced forage and vegetable leftovers from the farm in addition to Non GMO feed concentrates. The micro flora and fauna of the farm comprises the core of the flavours of the cheese. These flavours are indigenous hence representing the true taste of Dubai. The most popular of our goat’s cheeses are ‘Shamal’ and ‘Curd Khalifa’. ‘Shamal’ means ‘desert wind’ and the shape ‘Curd Khalifa’ represents the design of the desert flower that was the inspiration behind the design behind the world famous Burj Khalifa!

Do you have a home delivery service in Dubai? We do regular home deliveries of our fresh fruits and vegetables three times a week. Saturday – Dubai, Tuesday – Jumeirah & Sheikh Zayad Road Districts and Thursday – Sharjah.

Can you tell us about the types of products you produce and the seasons they are available in? We produce Fruits (citrus and all local fruits), vegetables and dates. During the winters we produce vegetables in our open fields and greenhouses. The seasonal vegetables are grown in a natural way. We do practice natural preservation for our seasonal vegetables to be used 62 | AWAKENINGSME.COM | SPRING 2017

during summer months. Some of the interesting products are – dates and lime pickles, sun ripened lemonade, sun dried tomatoes, tomato paste, cucumber and dill pickles, and dried herbs. During the summers we prefer to grow vegetables in greenhouses for selected crops like tomatoes and cucumbers. Most of our fruits continue to grow during summers, these include papaya, lime, lemon, pomelo, grapefruit, pomegranate, sapota and many varieties of dates. Our poultry selection is all hormone and antibiotic free grown. The most popular item is the country chicken meat, broiler chicken, pasture fed free range country chicken eggs and seasonally duck and turkey meat and eggs.

DEENA FARMS ARE KINDLY OFFERING ALL AWAKENINGS READERS 10% OFF THEIR FIRST ORDER USING THE DISCOUNT CODE 'AWAKENINGS 10%' ORDERS CAN BE PLACED ONLINE AT WWW.DEENAFARMS.COM

Does the produce last longer as it is grown and freshly picked for delivery the same day? Absolutely!! All our deliveries are harvested, washed and packed on the same day of delivery. Supermarkets import or locally procure their organic produce and the produce can sit for a long time under transit or in stores. Since we are a local farm, our produce goes directly into the refrigerators for our customers. However, we admit that the shelf life of any organic produce is less than the conventional (chemically treated) produce, but it is a much healthier and safe option for consumption.

How should we store the products? We pack our veggies in brown paper bags, products like eggs in paper pulp cases and poultry products in foam trays. We still have to adhere to local food standards for packaging and in some cases usage of some biodegradable plastic becomes inevitable. As a guide brown paper bag packaging can be safely stored for 24 – 48 hours for most of the vegetables thereafter they can be transferred to reusable zip lock bags. Green leaves and herbs can be transferred into airtight plastic boxes lined with a fresh kitchen towel within 24 hours and can be stored this way up to 2 – 3 weeks. Eggs can be refrigerated at 40C -60C for three months. Poultry meat can be used immediately, or can be stored in meat chillers up to 4 days. Moreover, it can be frozen up to 3 months. Though our vegetables and leaves are pre-washed thoroughly before packing, we always recommend our customers to wash them again. The organic system permits us to wash food products with water only we recommend the same thereafter. AWAKENINGSME.COM | SPRING 2017 | 63

Body Cleanser Soup

Rich Antioxident Soup

Rich in chlorophyll this soup is an effective body cleanser and antioxidant source. This very nourishing dish supports your detox or weight loss programme. To maximise the nutritional value, cut your vegetables finely to reduce cooking time.

Many red veggies are loaded with powerful, healthy antioxidants -- such as lycopene and anthocyanins -- that may do everything from fight heart disease and prostate cancer to decrease the risk for stroke and macular degeneration (the leading cause of blindness in people aged 60 and older). Antioxidants soak up damaging free radicals.

INGREDIENTS 2 tsp Olive oil or coconut oil 2 Coves of garlic, chopped 2 tbs Diced onion 1 inch Fresh ginger, peeled and chopped 4 cups Fresh broccoli, cut up 225g Fresh spinach leaves 3 Parsnips, peeled, cored, chopped 2 Ribs of celery, trimmed, chopped A handful of fresh parsley, roughly chopped Fresh water, as needed Sea salt and ground pepper, to taste Lemon or lime juice METHOD 1.Using a large soup pot, heat the oil over medium heat and stir in the garlic, onion, and ginger to season the oil. Add the broccoli, spinach, parsnips, celery and parsley, and stir a bit until the spinach wilts and collapses. 2. Add just enough water to cover the vegetables. Remember the spinach will cook down quite a bit, so don't add too much water at first, you can always thin the soup later if you need to. 3. Bring to a high simmer, cover the pot, and reduce the heat to a medium simmer. Cook for fifteen minutes or so until the veggies are softened. 4. When the veggies are soft, remove the pot from the heat and blend until smooth. If you like your soup silky smooth blend it for longer. 5. Add a squeeze of lemon to zest it up. You could add a good dash of coconut milk if you like your soups creamy. Serves 4 to 6.

Cover the pot and bring to a simmer, lower the heat and cook on a steady simmer until all the vegetables are tender. 4. When the veggies are soft, remove the pot from heat and blend with an immersion blender or puree the soup in small batches in a blender (covered very tightly!) or food processor until smooth. If you like your soup silky smooth blend it for longer; 4. Add salt, a pinch of sugar or a splash of lemon juice to taste. Serves 4 to 6.

...Detox Soups A detox soup takes many of the healthiest ingredients possible and puts them together in one pot. They usually involve pureeing or blending the vegetables up, or at the very least chopping them into bitesized pieces. This makes the soup easy to digest so your body can absorb and utilise all of the nutrients more easily. The best part about these recipes is that the focus is still on taste, so you’re getting a detox dose of vitamins and minerals without having to suffer through it.

AwakenedLastWord

The Trials and Tribulations of Getting your Child to Eat Healthily Before I became a mother I must confess I was someone who would see parents plying their children with sweets, fizzy drinks and fast food and think to myself, “how awful, I’d never do that!” and envisioned my role as a mother barefooted in my country kitchen with all my own organic, home-grown produce perfectly blended for my thriving toddlers. And that we would, of course, own chickens and goats and only eat things locally sourced and fresh. | WORDS BY JESSICA OWEN

T

he reality is now that I have a two-and-a-half year old, I find it next to impossible some days to even tempt him with a frozen, store-bought and over-processed chicken nugget. I have even stood with a bag of gummy bear sweets over his highchair in a bid to get him to eat at least ONE pea! I’ve begged and bribed, pleaded and given up. The fact is; children can be fussy. Toddlers especially. One week they will wolf down your pasta with hidden vegetable sauce but the next act repulsed and not touch a morsel. As a mother I constantly worry about whether or not my child has eaten enough and eaten the right kind of foods. I worry about salt content and ‘E’ numbers, sugar levels and tooth decay. Just when you think the phase of being splattered in baby puree is over, you are faced with another obstacle; getting your child to eat healthily. It can be difficult some days even finding the time to prepare healthy meals from scratch when you don’t come home from work until late or, like me, you are a complete novice in the kitchen and the prospect of cooking can feel like a terrifying final of Master Chef as you try to please the family with your culinary delights, or in my case, disasters; burnt courgette and sweet potato balls, anyone? When my son hit a fussy phase recently and refused to eat his usual favourites, I struggled for ideas of how to ensure he was eating healthily and getting all the nutrients that I knew he needed. Every time I tried to sneak in a piece of fruit or heaven forbid anything remotely green and healthy looking, I would be found out and the offending food usually cast aside on the floor ready for the dog to seize. I’ve tried lying too, “Yes, if you eat all that broccoli you will be as strong as the Hulk”, “No, that’s not sweet corn, it’s magic sun drops!” I began to get frustrated and anxious as dinner time approached and as a result, my son picked up on this and dinner time became a bit of a nightmare. “It must be karma,” I thought at the time, as my mother told me about how fussy I was a child. At my wits end with

74 | AWAKENINGSME.COM | SPRING 2017

my son’s fussy phase I asked friends for advice and bought a recipe book for toddlers. The blender became my new best friend. Hidden vegetable sauces and fruit smoothies meant I could sneak in a handful of nutrient-rich and vitamin-packed foods to his dinners. This worked for a while until I ran out of ideas and he became bored of the rather limited dishes I had to offer; Annabel Karmel in the kitchen I am not. I was starting to seriously worry about him not having enough variety in his diet or becoming ill from the distinct lack of fruit and vegetables. I confided in a doctor friend of mine who reassured me that if I look back over the course of what my son had eaten in a week, rather than in a day, that actually, he HAD had a lot of variety. She told me everything was OK in moderation and that in all honesty, how bad was a chicken nugget if it meant he was getting at least some protein from the chicken? Last weekend my partner took our little boy to a fast food restaurant and delighted in telling me he had eaten eight chicken nuggets, fries, mozzarella sticks and some cola. This was after a morning where he had stubbornly refused porridge and blueberries for breakfast and shook his head at every alternative suggestion. I spent almost twenty minutes that morning going through the fruit bowl and presenting him with ideas like some kind of desperate saleswoman, banana in one hand, orange in the other, trying to win over a small CEO with a bad attitude problem! I’ve slowly come to realise that everything is OK in moderation. Just like adults. I am a lot more relaxed about what my son eats now and although I still spend a lot of time pouring over labels checking sugar and salt levels when I do my weekly shop, I don’t beat myself up too much if we have to resort to frozen packet food or microwave meals at the end of a busy day. And if I need to bribe him to eat his broccoli with the promise of a gummy bear then that’s OK too.
