eorgia High School Football has long been recognized for its statewide greatness and each December when the state championships roll around it is easy to see why. A competitive spirit emanates from every corner of the Peach State throughout the season, but it’s only during the state championships that programs take the stage together for Georgia’s ultimate prize.

arietta achieved its first 12-win season since 1994 with its 42-31 win over Parkview in the semifinals and now the Blue Devils’ are set to make their first finals appearance since the program captured the title in 1967. Leading this year’s successful run has been a roster of college-bound and highly-touted Class of 2020 prospects. Quarterback Harrison Baily has thrown for 4,000 yards off 251-of-362 passing (69.3 percent) with 44 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Senior running back Kimani Vidal has racked up 1,511 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns. As for the receiving corps, five-star Arik Gilbert has 90 catches and 1,614 receiving yards with 12 touchdowns, Ricky White has 92 catches with 1,246 receiving yards with 14 touchdowns and Taji Johnson has 39 catches for 649 yards and 8 touchdowns. Unlike previous postseasons that have been impacted by injuries, Marietta is arriving stronger than ever to Georgia High School Football’s ultimate stage.

itting one win away from taking home the program’s sixth all-time state title, Lowndes is making its first championship appearance since its successful 2007 title run. This year’s Vikings team has excelled on both sides of the football—averaging 39.6 ppg offensively and limiting opponents to just 11.3 ppg with a flawless 14-0 record that has propelled them to the top 10 in national polling. Sophomore quarterback Jacurri Brown is the mechanism that keeps all the levers operating in Lowndes’ explosive offense and he has already contributed 1,253 passing yards and 1,508 rushing yards this season. In the Vikings’ 49-28 victory over North Gwinnett in the semifinals, Lowndes was able to explode to a 42-14 lead at the half before the Bulldogs chipped away at the deficit in the second half. This was achieved, despite senior running back and 2019 Region 1-AAAAAAA Player of the Year Gary Osby, sidelined for the third-straight week with an injury.

MARIETTA VS. LOWNDES CLASS AAAAAAA SKINNY When comparing the explosive offenses of Lowndes and Marietta, the differences are stylistic and not effectiveness. Marietta quarterback Harrison Bailey is coming off one of the best performances of his career, completing 24-of-28 attempts for 423 yards and five touchdowns in the semifinal win over Parkview. As for Lowndes, their quarterback Jacurri Brown and junior Austin Wright gashed North Gwinnett’s defense with 314 of the team’s 397 rushing yards in the 49-28 semifinal blowout. Lowndes’ ability to run the football could be a key to limiting Bailey and the Marietta offense’s possessions. Conversely, Marietta running back Kimani Vidal can also dictate the pace with his physical running.

Class AAAAAA Allatoona vs. Harrison Friday, December 13 | 8:00 PM By Craig Sager II

ALLATOONA 11-2-1, REGION 6 NO. 2 SEED

HARRISON 14-0, REGION 6 NO. 1 SEED

llatoona is in the finals for the first time since the program captured its first-ever state crown in 2015. The Buccaneers have been in a couple of close in throughout their run to this year’s finals and are fresh off a 17-14 overtime victory against Richmond Hill in the semifinals. In the win, Bucs quarterback Danté Marshall found Asante Das for the 36-yard game-tying touchdown pass with just 1:37 left in regulation. After Richmond Hill missed a field goal in the first possession of overtime, Allatoona’s Jude Kelley made a 22-yard field goal on third down to give the Bucs the road win. Defensively, Allatoona has allowed just 8.5 ppg during the postseason and the Bucs also had success on that side of the ball in the 21-17 loss to Harrison during the regular season. Offensively, Das is a player to watch and the senior receiver enters the finals with a team-high 15 receiving touchdowns.

he undefeated Hoyas have already produced a school-record 14 wins this season and are now sitting just one historic win away from clinching the program’s first-ever state title. Harrison’s 40.6 ppg scored this season are also an all-time best, as is the 29.9 average margin of victory seen this season so far. Last weekend in the semifinals, the Hoyas outmatched No. 1 ranked Dacula convincingly in a 38-7 blowout. Senior quarterback Gavin Hall and running back David Roberts each rushed in one touchdown before their senior teammate, running back Mason Babay, tacked on three second-half rushing scores. Harrison’s closest game this year was its narrow 21-17 win over Allatoona in Region 6 play back on Oct. 11. The Hoyas fell behind 17-7 at the half, but outscored the Bucs 14-0 in the final two quarters to escape from the defensive struggle victorious.

Familiarity will play a big factor as the two Region 6-AAAAAA rivals face off for the second time this season. Both offenses struggled in the previous meeting: Harrison quarterback Gavin Hall finished 4-of-9 passing for 46 yards and one touchdown with one interception while the running game picked up 111 yards off its 34 combined carries. Allatoona quarterback Danté Marshall completed just five of 16 attempts for 118 yards and had two touchdowns to go with two interceptions. The Bucs’ running game picked up just 109 yards on 32 total carries. Expect both coaching staffs to be hard at work installing game plans that can open up opportunities that were hard to come by the last time around.

uford lost a stunner to Clarke Central 31-28 in the final game of the regular season and then carried the Region 8-AAAAA No. 2 seed to the state championship. From 2000-16, Buford won 10 state championships and lost in five championship games. Since 2000, its worst finishes were quarterfinal exits in 2005, 2006 and last year. From 2007-16 the Wolves were in the championship game in each of the 10 seasons with victories in 2007-10 and 2012-14. In his first season as head coach, Bryant Appling has continued the expected levels of success at Buford. The Wolves pride themselves on defense, and in their 29-0 semifinal victory over Jones County, Buford sacked Jones County quarterback Hunter Costlow six times and got a safety while holding the Greyhounds to just 33 rushing yards. Against Jones, Buford gained 287 yards on the ground and controlled the clock to perfection. Its offensive line allowed running back Victor Venn 14 carries, 108 yards and two touchdowns.

arner Robins lost to Rome at home in the championship game in 2017 after snowy conditions postponed the games at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Then, after losing in a marathon triple-overtime thriller to Bainbridge 47-41 in the championship game last year at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the Demons enter this year’s championship with a title-sized chip on their shoulders. Warner Robins is in the hunt for its fifth state title and first since 2004 after winning in 1976, 1981 and 1988. In the semifinals, the Demons displayed why the offense has been lauded all season with a 55-3 victory over Starr’s Mill. Junior quarterback Jalen Addie is 144-of-278 passing for 2,297 yards and 23 touchdowns. Armon Porter, Ty Carr and Marcayll Jones are favorite targets. On the ground, Addie, Jalen Rutherford, Ahmad Walker and James Smith are threats. The Demons enter the title game scoring 35.7 points per game.

A total of 15 football championships are in the trophy cases between Buford and Warner Robins and, although both teams enter the championship game with firstyear head coaches, the traditions of success have continued in 2019. Bryant Appling took the reins of a Buford program that saw the departure of John Ford after 11-2 and 10-3 records in 2017 and 2018. Appling was a Buford assistant for 15 years prior to the promotion. Marquis Westbrook took the head coaching job at Warner Robins after Mike Chastain’s departure to Jones County, which Buford beat in the semifinals on the road 29-0. Warner Robins wants to punch through after losing to Bainbridge in last year’s title game and Rome two years ago. Buford’s last finals appearances were losses in back-to-back championship games in 2015 and 2016.

wo-time defending state champion Blessed Trinity is sending a resounding message to those that doubted whether the Titans would be back on the championship stage after graduating a loaded group of seniors this past spring. The Titans avenged their lone loss this season last Friday, by cruising past Woodward Academy 46-21, and that 25-point win is the closest game that the team has seen during this current postseason run. Senior running back Elijah Green missed Blessed Trinity’s first matchup with Woodward Academy, but his presence was felt in last Friday’s matchup as he racked up 195 yards and three touchdowns in tandem with freshman Justice Haynes, who added 158 yards off 20 carries and a 53-yard score in the winning effort. The same defensive fortitude that fueled the last two championship runs has also shined this postseason and the unit has allowed just 9.5 ppg through the first four rounds.

conee County has been eliminated in the first round each of the past three seasons, but this year’s Warriors team has strung together an impressive postseason run that has them in the championship for the first time since 1999. The Warriors’ latest playoff victory was a 35-28 triumph over Sandy Creek, the classification’s highest-scoring offense. Senior quarterback and LSU commit Max Johnson was huge for the Warriors, with two touchdown passes and two rushing scores. This performance came after Johnson’s 18-of-24 outing and two touchdown passes led Oconee County to a 17-7 win over Marist in the quarterfinals. In Oconee County’s 39-7 win over Perry in the second round, Johnson went 19-of-23 passing for 253 yards and five touchdowns through the air. This postseason, Johnson has accounted for 10 passing touchdowns and three rushing scores. The Warriors’ passing attack also features 6-foot-2 senior Ben Noland and 6-foot-6 sophomore Jake Johnson.

CLASS AAAA SKINNY Blessed Trinity has a knack for limiting opponents with talented quarterbacks and Saturday will put the Titans to the test as red-hot Oconee County quarterback Max Johnson takes the field. The Titans have already tallied 41 total sacks this season heading into the matchup. The Oconee County defense enters the matchup allowing just 12.7 ppg, but the Blessed Trinity running attack is going to be a big test for the Warriors. Leading the Titans’ backfield is 3-star senior and UNC commit Elijah Green, a physical playmaker and the son of former NFL safety Victor Green. The younger Green carried the ball 23 times in the semifinals as he racked up 195 yards and three touchdowns.

edar Grove has continued where it left off after Jimmy Smith’s departure and, with the promotion of Miguel Patrick to head coach, the Saints are in good hands. Patrick led the Saints to another region title this year after Smith won 5-AAA in 2015, 2017 and 2018. Cedar Grove’s path to the final went through Fannin County 36-7 and Benedictine 49-13 before it won a rematch of last year’s title game against Peach County in the quarterfinals 36-3. In its 28-18 semifinal victory over GAC, Cedar Grove never trailed but relied on a touchdown run from running back Chavon Wright late in the fourth quarter to extend its lead and secure the championship berth. Against GAC, quarterback Austin Smith was 8-of-10 passing for 138 yards and a touchdown pass to Langston White. Backs Chavon Wright and Rashod Dubinion will prove a test for Crisp County’s defense. Linebacker Isaiah Ratcliff and defensive end Alvin Williams anchor the Saints defense. Sophomore Janiran Bonner and senior Coreyon Cone have been productive wideouts.

he Cougars are in the championship game for the first time in school history, dating to 1957; however, Crisp County’s predecessor school, Cordele, did win the Class B championship in 1951. Crisp advanced to the finals after a smothering defensive effort against Jenkins in the semis. Jenkins entered the game averaging 40 points per game and the Cougars managed a 14-6 victory. Brad Harber is the 17th coach in Crisp County history and the first to find a path to the championship game. Crisp is relatively balanced but favors the run, averaging 207 rushing and 116 passing yards per game. Sophomore running back Marquise Palmer anchors the run game and has 233 carries for 1,512 yards and 16 touchdowns. Junior quarterback A.J. Lofton is 66-of-103 passing for 861 yards and six touchdowns. Lofton adds 169 carries for 1,043 yards and 13 rushing touchdowns.

Cedar Grove is competing for a state championship for the third time in four years and is looking to defend its title after Jadon Haselwood’s game-winning touchdown reception last season, which handed Peach County its second title loss in a row. Crisp County, on the other hand, is in the championship game for the first time since the program’s first season in 1957 and is looking to make history for the city of Cordele. Cedar Grove enters the title game with a first-year coach, Miguel Patrick, after Jimmy Smith accepted a job on Georgia State’s staff. Brad Harber has been at Crisp County since 2017, after Shelton Felton left for the college ranks. Crisp and Cedar Grove have met once, in the semifinals in 2016 when a Felton-led Crisp program lost to Cedar Grove 55-0.

rooks County is riding momentum from its semifinal victory over Callaway, when it took a 20-0 lead early only to see it vanish when Callaway took a 35-26 lead late in the third quarter. The Trojans cut the lead to 35-33 and recaptured the lead with 8:14 left to take the 39-35 victory. Brooks is in its first finals appearance since its 1994 championship. The Trojans lost in the semifinals in 1997, 2008, 2013, 2014 and 2017. Brooks County is relatively balanced and averages 230 rushing and 149 passing yards per game. ublin features one of the most prolific and productive backfields in the class, if not the state, and Brooks County’s defense will be tested by it. The Fighting Irish average 413 rushing and not quite 30 passing yards per game. Last week in the 55-45 semifinal victory over Thomasville, running back Jacques Evans, a 6-foot-2, 230-pound senior, rushed for 280 yards and five touchdowns — in the first half. He finished with 380 yards. On the season, Evans has rushed for 2,559 yards and 43 touchdowns to lead the running backs. Senior Zion Kemp and Marcus Adams will also threaten defenders from the backfield. Kemp, Adams and Evans have combined for over 5,000 yards and 70 touchdowns on the ground. Junior quarterback Markelle Mitchell has only attempted 27 passes and of his 13 receptions, seven went for touchdowns. He adds 55 carries for 148 yards and six touchdowns behind Dublin’s big three backs.

BROOKS COUNTY VS. DUBLIN CLASS AA SKINNY The teams have met just two times, once in each of the past two seasons. In 2018, Brooks County enjoyed a 13-10 victory in the regular season, and this year, Dublin took the 49-35 victory. Head coach Roger Holmes has been at Dublin since 2002 and has a 160-59-1 record during his stint leading the Fighting Irish. He led Dublin to a state championship tie with Charlton County in Class AA in 2006, its first title since 1963. Dublin also won championships in back-to-back seasons in 1959-60. Head coach Maurice Freeman came back to Brooks County in 2008 and has led the Trojans to the playoffs in each season. During his first stint as head coach at Brooks County from 1994-97, Freeman won a state title in 1994 after beating Manchester 20-0.

op seed Irwin County is in the finals for the fifth time in the past six seasons, but will be looking for its first championship victory since 1975 when it takes the field. The Indians have been on a mission this season, compiling a flawless 12-0 record that includes a whopping 35.9 average margin of victory. The Indians did all their scoring in the second half in the semifinals as they ran away with a 36-0 win over two-time defending state champion Clinch County. Defensively, Gabriel Benyard returned an interception for a touchdown and Jordan Payne had a fumble recovery touchdown. The two scores gave the Irwin County defense a combined 62 points scored on the year and the group has only allowed 56 points, a statistic indicative of how dominant the Indians’ defense has been all year long.

arion County is making its first championship appearance since 2013 when the program topped Charlton County 12-3 for its first-ever state crown. The Eagles carry an eight-game winning streak into the finals and are fresh off a 42-25 comeback victory over Pelham in the semifinals. Marion County roared back from a 25-14 third-quarter deficit with 28 unanswered points to top the Hornets. Brandon Thomas and Trice McCannon each rushed for Marion County touchdowns in the first half to keep the Eagles in striking distance and then dominated the second half. McCannon’s 45-yard touchdown pass to Thomas with 6:34 left in the third quarter brought Marion County within 25-20 heading into the final frame. McCannon found Thomas on a 9-yard touchdown reception early in the fourth quarter to give the Eagles a 28-25 lead. Thomas added a 67-yard rushing touchdown with five minutes left and then McCannon capped the scoring with a 3-yard run.

This will be the first-ever meeting between the two programs, which is an interesting dynamic considering the postseason success that the two have shared over the last decade. The combination of Marion County’s Trice McCannon and Brandon Thomas will be key if the Eagles are going to find success against the Irwin County defense. As for the Indians, they beat Clinch County 36-0 in the semifinals in a game that concluded with neither team completing a pass. Marion County will have to stop Irwin County’s rushing attack in addition to avoiding turnovers and losing the battle of field position if they are going to spoil the Indians’ bid for a perfect season.

his is the first time Wesleyan has been to the championship game since winning it all in 2008 and the Wolves are firing on all cylinders at the right time. In the playoffs, it moved past First Presbyterian 35-28, Christian Heritage 34-13, Savannah Christian 42-16 and Fellowship Christian 56-20 last week. Wesleyan is balanced and averages 192 passing and 154 rushing yards per game. Sophomore quarterback J.C. French is 189-of-281 passing for 2,680 yards and 31 touchdowns while rushing for 307 yards and 16 touchdowns on 81 carries. Sophomore Griffin Caldwell will factor in the backfield with 187 carries for 1,120 yards and 13 touchdowns. Caldwell rushed for 124 yards and two touchdowns in the semis. Senior Micah Smith has 62 receptions for 1,002 yards and 12 touchdowns to lead a receiving corps that has depth. Sophomore Cooper Blauser has 64 receptions for 927 yards and eight touchdowns, and several other receivers have been productive for the Wolves.

In its regular season 54-17 victory over Wesleyan earlier this year, senior quarterback Gabe Wright was 8-of-15 passing for 171 yards and three touchdowns. The Chargers got three rushing touchdowns each from senior back Keaton Mitchell and junior back Philip Massengale, and senior receiver Justin Robinson had five receptions for 81 yards and two touchdowns against the Wolves. Wright is 101-of-174 passing for 1,995 yards and 25 touchdowns with just three interceptions before passing for 122 yards and two touchdowns against Holy Innocents’ on the road in the semifinals. Mitchell has 214 carries for 2,029 yards and 40 touchdowns to lead the backfield. Eagle’s Landing Christian has six state titles, with five in GHSA in 2012 and 2015-18 and one in GISA in 1996.

WESLEYAN VS. ELCA CLASS A-PRIVATE SKINNY

Eagle’s Landing Christian is going for five consecutive state championships and Wesleyan wants to spoil the party. For the past two seasons, ELCA has defeated Athens Academy in the title game after beating Aquinas in 2015 and Fellowship Christian in 2016. For Wesleyan, its best finish since 2010 was a quarterfinal exit in 2016, to go with a state championship in 2008 after beating Emanuel County Institute 33-21. The programs have met six times — once in 2010 and five times since 2016 — and ELCA has won each including a 54-17 victory earlier this season. The closest game between the programs was a 34-31 ELCA victory in 2016. Franklin Pridgen for Wesleyan and Jonathan Gess for ELCA have been the coaches in each meeting.
