he 2021 GHSA Swimming and Diving State Championships return to Georgia Tech’s Aquatic Center for five days of action that will get underway on Tuesday before culminating on Saturday. In an effort to provide the safest possible environment, media and spectators will not be allowed to attend this year’s championship, but the digital infrastructure is in place for all the action to be streamed on the NFHS Network with live results made available on the “Meet Mobile: Swim” app. There were two programs that won first-ever state titles at last year’s championship. On the boys side, Class 7A’s North Gwinnett captured its first-ever team state title over four-time reigning champion Brookwood. The Bulldogs scored 319 points ahead of Brookwood’s 304.5 and third-place West Forsyth (236). Dalton claimed its second state title in three years with a 445-to-411 advantage over second-place Alpharetta in Class 6A. Marist cruised to the Class 4A-5A title with a 370-to-221 margin over Riverwood—giving the War Eagles their third-straight title. As for Class A-3A, Westminster racked up its third-straight championship and a historic 27th all-time boys state crown with a massive 552 points over second-place Wesleyan’s 255. The Westminster girls also successfully won their third-straight title, while collecting the program’s 24th all-time title. Blessed Trinity won its
second-state girls title in three years in the Class 4-5A division, while the Cambridge girls took the Class 6A title to win their historic first. In the top classification, the Lassiter girls picked up their first state title since 2011 when the Trojans completed their run of four-straight championships. Within the team format, there will be plenty of individual standouts to keep an eye on. The Lassiter girls will have Elizabeth Blanco and Elizabeth Tilt back to help lead the Trojans. This duo helped Lassiter win the 200-yard medley relay a year ago as underclassmen. On the boys side, Dalton standout Roman Valdez will be back as a junior after winning the 200-yard freestyle last year with a 1:37.87 time. Valdez edged Centennial’s Class of 2023 standout Sebastien Sergile’s 1:39.98 in the event. Valdez also earned an individual state title in the Class 6A’s 100-yard freestyle with a 44.90 finish. Up in Class 7A, West Forsyth’s Jack Aikins won the 100-yard freestyle by clocking a 43.27. This time just narrowly missed out on Paul Powers’ 2014 state record of 43.19 and Aikins will be returning as a senior looking to challenge that record. Aikins was also on West Forsyth’s state championship winning 200yard freestyle relay team and 400-yard freestyle relay team that took the titles this past year with four underclassmen representing the Wolverines in both events.
