Thursday offers a trio of outstanding matchups—opening with Region 1-AA rivals Thomasville and Fitzgerald in the noon slot. Thomasville previously defeated the Purple Hurricanes 15-8 on Oct. 22, a victory that clinched Thomasville’s region crown. Thomasville is one win away from the program’s first state title since 1988 and Fitzgerald is looking to snap a championship drought that dates back to the 1948 season. The Class 4A championship features Carver-Columbus and Benedictine in the first-ever meeting between the programs. Carver-Columbus battled past Cedartown 22-21 in a dramatic semifinal victory and Benedictine has battled past defending champion Marist (24-21) and North Oconee (42-32) in the past two rounds. HUGHES 13-1, REGION 4 NO. 1 SEED
angston Hughes has been on a warpath over the last two seasons and will be making its championship debut riding a 13-game win-streak. This moment has been years in the making with Hughes’ breaking to the scene in recent years with a young and extremely talented group that is the bulk of this year’s lineup. Head coach Daniel Williams has been able to rotate a ton of guys defensively, and the offense is a balanced machine that has racked up 189 rushing yards per game to go with 182.9 passing yards per game. Sophomore quarterback Prentiss “Air” Noland has thrown for 2,473 yards and 33 touchdowns, with seniors Rodney Shelly (10) and Armani Tookes (8) combining for 18 of the team’s receiving scores. Defensively, Michael Watson II is a multi-year starter at linebacker and has led the way with 165 tackles this season.

BUFORD 13-1, REGION 8 NO. 1 SEED
o. 1 ranked Buford is making its 18th finals appearance since 2001 and is one victory away from the program’s 14th all-time state crown. Head Coach Bryant Appling took the reins in 2019 and will be looking to win his third-state title in three seasons. The Wolves held No. 7 ranked Carrollton to six points in their 21-6 semifinal win. It was the 11th time in 14 games that the Wolves held an opponent to a touchdown or less. Buford (13-1) is allowing just 6.4 points per game, which is second-best in the state behind Collins Hill’s 5.8. Buford’s Ashton Daniels threw two touchdowns passes, and Victor Venn ran for 103 yards and a score on 17 carries. Carrollton got inside the Buford 20-yard line three times but turned the ball over on downs once, in the fourth quarter, and settled for two field goals by Jacob Russell.

HUGHES VS. BUFORD CLASS 6A SKINNY
Buford defeated Hughes 44-15 in last year’s quarterfinals in the only meeting between the programs in their respective histories. This year’s showdown will put a bevy of future college-bound prospects on display. Hughes has four of the top rated 34 juniors in the state—including 6-foot-7 offensive tackle Johnathan "Bo" Hughley and 6-foot-5 four-star tight end Jelani Thurman. Hughley and Thurman are prime examples of the tremendous size Hughes’ roster boasts. Buford has one of the most star-studded group of seniors in the state and that group consists of quarterback and Stanford-commit Ashton Daniels, four-star athlete Isaiah Bond, Alabama-commit and safety Jake Pope and three-star running back and Colorado-commit Victor Venn among many others.

CALHOUN 12-2, REGION 7 NO. 2 SEED
o. 6-ranked Calhoun squared off with No. 9-ranked Blessed Trinity eight weeks after beating the Titans 32-27 in the regular season, and the Yellow Jackets came away with another win — this time by a margin of 24-7 — to advance to the state finals for the first time since 2017 and the first time ever as a Class 5A program. Calhoun dominated the first half, taking a 21-0 lead late in the second with Christian Lewis’ third touchdown pass of the night and second in a row to Cole Speer (his first went to Emaree Winston in the opening frame). On defense, the Yellow Jackets held Blessed Trinity to a missed 37-yard field goal attempt in the first, Quin Smith hauled in an interception in between the two Lewis-to-Speer connections, and Mason Green and Peyton Law registered a sack and a fumble recovery respectively on back-to-back plays to close out the half.

DECEMBER 9-11, 2021
WA R N E R R O B I N S V S . C A L H O U N CLASS 5A SKINNY Warner Robins is in the state finals for the fifth straight time—joining Buford, Calhoun, Irwin County and Eagle’s Landing Christian as the only other programs to match that feat; Calhoun’s five-year run to consecutive finals came in 2008-12. This will be the first-ever meeting between the two powerhouses. Additionally, this is the second-straight year that the Class 5A championship has pinned Region 1 against Region 7. Last year, Warner Robins defeated Region 7’s Cartersville in a runaway 62-28 final. Both Warner Robins and Calhoun have been tested with loaded schedules. Calhoun will be Warner Robins’ eighth ranked opponent and Warner Robins will be Calhoun’s seventh-ranked opponent.

Class 4A
Carver-Columbus vs. Benedictine Friday, December 10 | 3:30 PM By Craig Sager II
I
CARVER-COLUMBUS 13-1, REGION 2 NO. 1 SEED
n the semifinals, host Carver-Columbus trailed the whole game until Jaiden Credle’s 54-yard touchdown with 2:27 left and Devin Riles’ game-deciding two-point conversion that gave them the one-point victory. Cedartown opened up a 14-0 lead off of a pair of rushing touchdowns by Cedric Washington in the first quarter. Carver was able to even up 14-14 at the half with a 12-yard Riles touchdown run and a 54-yard touchdown pass from Riles to Cam Hudson. Washington returned to the endzone for his third score on a 33-yard carry to put the Bulldogs back up 21-14 and the teams battled back-and-forth until Credle’s late score. Cedartown forced a turnover on downs inside the 10-yard line with just six minutes left before Carver’s defense got the stop and set up the game-winning drive. Carver-Columbus will make its first appearance in the finals since 2007.

BENEDICTINE 12-2, REGION 3 NO. 1 SEED
o. 2-ranked Benedictine bested visiting North Oconee by a margin of 42-32 in a semifinals game that featured four lead changes to advance to the state title game for the first time since 2016. Holden Geriner put the Cadets on the board with a scoring strike to Zaquan Bryan before the Titans took a 14-7 lead with Dominic Elder’s 3-yard run and Khalil Barnes’ reception of a Max Wilson touchdown pass. Geriner found Bryan for another touchdown early in the second, and following a North Oconee three-and-out, Kameron Edge put Benedictine up 21-14. The Titans added a field goal before the break and a Brooks Thompson touchdown reception early in the second half to reclaim the lead, but Edge hauled in a touchdown pass from Geriner on third-and-long and Justin Thomas found the end zone shortly after for a 35-24 Benedictine advantage. Geriner added a touchdown run for the game’s final points.

CARVER-COLUMBUS VS. BENEDICTINE CLASS 4A SKINNY Carver-Columbus and Benedictine will meet for the first time, and it will be a contrast of styles as Carver-Columbus’ downhill offense goes up against a potent Benedictine offense led by quarterback and Auburn-commit Holden Geriner. Carver is averaging nearly 300 rushing yards per game and also has the ability to spark the passing game with Devin Riles. Benedictine’s offense is more evenly distributed with a 226.5 averaging passing yards per game and 228.9 rushing yards per game. In terms of major contributors, Carver’s Jaiden Credle and Benedictine’s Justin Thomas have both rushed in 23 touchdowns this season. Cedar Grove vs. Carver-Atlanta Saturday, December 11 | 12:00 PM By Seth Ellerbee
S
CEDAR GROVE 11-3, REGION 5 NO. 1 SEED
T
CARVER-ATLANTA 11-2, REGION 5 NO. 2 SEED
ophomore Jamar Graham has emerged as a state-championship caliber quarterback for the Saints and in the 27-6 semifinal victory against Appling County, Graham passed for three touchdowns to ensure another trip to the finals. Rashod Dubinion – an Arkansas-commit – is a 5-10, 185-pound threestar running back that scored on a 5-yard run against Appling. He is speedy and difficult to tackle. Cedar Grove holds an 8-1 edge in the series against Carver, which dates to 1990. The teams played each season from 1991 to 1997 and then didn’t meet again until last season. The closest margin of victory for Cedar Grove against Carver was the 17-0 victory this year. Carver enjoyed a forfeit victory last season against Cedar Grove, but the Panthers have never outscored them. The Saints have beaten White County (79-0), Southeast Bulloch (48-10), Crips County (28-6) and Appling to earn the berth in the title game.
he Panther's path to the title game has impressive and after going through Region 5 with one loss – to Cedar Grove – Carver defeated North Hall (56-17), Liberty County (53-6), Burke County (46-14) and Pierce County (19-17) on the road. Carver’s stalwart in the playoffs has been Quintavious Lockett who scored on runs 5, 2 and 1 yard to lift the Panthers past Pierce County in the semifinals, finishing with 15 carries for 135 yards. The 5-foot-11, 230-pound senior back rushed for two touchdowns in Carver’s quarterfinals victory over Burke County. Senior back Jarveous Brown has 144 carries for 1,490 yards and eight touchdowns. Quarterback Bryce Bowens was 6-of-10 passing for 255 yards and three touchdowns against Burke County. He is 67-of-105 passing for 1,473 yards and 14 touchdowns on the season. Deandre Buchannon has 24 receptions for 560 yards and seven touchdowns to lead receivers.

C E D A R G R OV E V S . C A R V E R - AT L A N TA CLASS 3A SKINNY Two Region 5 rivals enter the state title game with varying paths. Cedar Grove has been here. The Saints have won three state titles (2016, 2018 and 2019) in the past five seasons and new head coach John Adams, wants his first. Last season’s quarterfinal exit for Cedar Grove was the earliest postseason loss since 2014 when it lost in the second round. Carver-Atlanta is enjoying its first state title game since an appearance in 1967 and a first-ever title berth for head coach Darren Myles, who has been coaching the Panthers since 2005. Under Myles, Carver’s best postseason result was a loss in the 2017 5A semifinals and two quarterfinal appearances – 2007 and last season. Carver defeated defending-champion Pierce County 19-17 in the semifinals to earn the berth in the championship game.

IRWIN COUNTY VS. BROOKS COUNTY CLASS 1A-PUBLIC SKINNY
In his second stint as Brooks County’s head coach, Maurice Freeman doesn’t know what it means to miss the playoffs. Freeman coached the Trojans to the team’s only state title in 1994 and coached until 1997 before retaking the job in 2008. Since then, he’s led Brooks to the playoffs each season but lost in the title game in each of the past two seasons – last year to Irwin County and to Dublin in the 2A title game in 2019. Irwin is back and trying for its fourth overall championship and third-consecutive title. In 2019, Buddy Nobles coached the Indians to a 13-0 record as he neared the end of a heroic fight against cancer. Last season, head coach Casey Soliday defended Nobles’ title in an emotional fashion. Irwin previously beat Brooks County 21-13 on Sept. 24 this season.

The Wolverines are back and if Prince Avenue wins, it will be the second time that the A-Private title has been defended since its creation in 2012. Back again is Trinity Christian, and the Lions are blessed to have the chance for a championship after outlasting ELCA 48-45 in a double-overtime thriller in the semifinals. The Lions want their first state championship since joining the GHSA in 2018. Trinity advanced to the 3A GISA state championship game in 2017 and since joining the GHSA, the Lions advanced to the second and first rounds before last season’s appearance in the title game.

PORTAL PANTHERS
(Portal, GA) • Navy Blue, White
Class 1A-4A Flag Football Portal vs. Southeast Bulloch Thursday, December 9 | 11:00 AM By Seth Ellerbee
T
PORTAL
he Panthers are peaking at the right time and trying for the program’s firstever state title while enjoying the team’s second championship berth after beating St. Anne Pacelli 12-6 in the semifinals. Portal’s path to the title game went through Beach (13-6), Harris County (19-0) and St. Vincent’s (14-13) in the quarterfinals. Portal favors the pass which it adjusted in its semifinal victory over St. Anne Pacelli in a rain-delayed contest. “What a crazy day with the weather and venue change, the wet field and the wet ball,” Portal head coach Jay Reddick told WSAV in Savannah. “We are a passing team, so we though that wet ball was going to hurt us. We made a change and we got it done.”
T
SOUTHEAST BULLOCH
he Yellow Jackets are undefeated at 18-0 and its defense has not allowed a point scored since Nov. 16 in a 13-12 victory over New Hampstead to close its regular season. In the playoffs, the Yellow Jackets have beaten Jenkins 44-0, Northside-Columbus 20-0, Columbus 13-0 and Calvary Day 13-0. "Their offense is explosive; I wish we could run the option like they do," SEB coach Marci Cochran told the Savannah Morning News. "But our defense hung in there, pulled flags, and did what we told them to do, and it paid off today." Southeast Bulloch has had 10 shutout victories this season.
