CHAMPIONSHIP SATURDAY TO INTENSIFY STATE’S TOP RIVALRIES TOURNAMENT PREVIEW BY CRAIG SAGER | CSAGER@SCOREATL .COM
T
his year’s finals are packed with state championship power. Ten of the 14 finalists have won state titles in their program’s history, amounting to a grand total of 41 all-time state titles, and five of the championship matches feature teams that will be playing to defend their crowns. No volleyball program in the history of the state has more hardware than the 13-time state champion Walton Lady Raiders, who are back in the finals as four-time defending champions. Walton’s opponent is rival Lassiter, which has played the Raiders closely in both regular-season defeats this season. Lassiter also is coming off a massive sweep at Etowah in the semifinals.
FAMILIAR FOES
Class AAAAAA will also see two region rivals squaring off with Allatoona and Sequoyah. Allatoona reached the finals last year, but fell short to Pope 3-1, missing out on a chance to win its first-ever championship. The Bucs punched their ticket to this year’s championship by toppling No. 1 ranked Alpharetta in straight sets. Sequoyah previously won a state title in 2014 and is back in the finals after taking down defending champion Pope 3-0 in the semis. Sequoyah has won all three meetings against Allatoona this year, but the matches have been tight with Sequoyah winning 7-of-9 total sets played by a combined 211to-175 points.
In Class AAAAA, Area 3 rivals McIntosh and Whitewater will be squaring off. McIntosh is the two-time defending state champions and have won four all-time state titles. The Chiefs have won 33 straight matches heading into Saturday, including a 2-0 victory over Whitewater in the regular season’s only meeting. Whitewater has won two state titles in its program’s history (2009, 2012) and had to battle past Starr’s Mill on the road in a five-set marathon match to return to the championship stage. As noted in the classification preview, Whitewater sophomore Ashli-Amari Cox posted a career-high 12 total blocks in the semifinal victory. Whitewater’s defense at the net will be put to the test by a highly effective McIntosh attack. Class AAAA features defending state champion St. Pius against six-time state champion Blessed Trinity. St. Pius has been outstanding throughout the 2019 season, compiling a 45-4 record along its return to the finals. The Golden Lions faced Blessed Trinity back on Aug. 17 and scored a 2-1 victory (25-17, 17-25, 15-3). In the victory, sophomore Lura Underwood (11) and senior Maggie McCurdy (10) combined for 21 of the team’s 32 kills. Blessed Trinity enters the finals with a 37-9 overall record and a 14-match winning streak that does not feature a single dropped set. The Titans are led at the net by Alyssa Parodi, Cate Wright and McKenna Nelson with Kaya Hood pro-
viding a strong defensive presence. In Class AAA, Area 4’s top two seeds, Westminster and Pace Academy, will meet for the third time this season. Westminster rallied after dropping the first set to defeat the Knights 2-1 in the first meeting (28-30, 25-21, 15-7) and scored a 3-0 victory (25-17, 25-15, 26-24) in the Area 4 Finals match on Oct. 10.
MAINTAINING MOMENTUM
In the 3-0 victory, Westminster’s Chloe Emch notched 33 assists and junior Mary Emily Morgan (17) and sophomore Ashley Vincent (16) combined for 33 of the team’s 47 kills. Pace Academy, however, enters the championship as Class AAA’s two-time defending champions and the Knights proved to be in peak form in their 3-0 (25-12, 2510, 25-6) semifinal win over Greater Atlanta Christian on Tuesday. As for the Wildcats, they cruised to a 3-0 win (25-16, 25-15, 257) over Jackson County in their semifinal triumph. The Class AA/A-Public championship match features two-time defending champion Coosa and Elite Scholars Academy, which sits one win away from achieving a historic first-ever state title. Coosa features senior Kasey Thacker, who was named the classification’s Player of the Year in 2018. Thacker tallied a match-best 17 kills off of 30 attempts in Coosa’s (25-19, 25-13, 25-12) sweep over Rabun County in the semifinals. Elite Scholars Academy has
won its last 18 matches heading into Saturday and enters the match battle-tested after compiling a 37-10 record against a schedule packed with powerhouses. The Royal Knights also feature a dynamic duo of Ranyla Griggs and Tobie Kassim, who are the team’s leaders in kills. Class AA/A-Private has experienced a thrilling first four rounds of playoff action and it will be 2014 state champion Hebron Christian squaring off with Walker for this year’s crown. Hebron Christian recently scored a 3-0 (25-12, 25-21, 25-17) sweep against Mt. Paran in the semifinals to improve to 44-7 overall. The Lions’ roster possesses a lot of size that makes them a potential mismatch for opponents. Six-foot senior outside hitter Hayden McGee is the team’s leader in kills. Also, 5-foot-11 senior Katie Marrero and 6-foot2 senior Carly Heidger are premier middle hitters. Walker won a five-set thriller (15-25, 25-16, 25-10, 26-28, 15-11) over Holy Innocents’ in the semifinals to reach the championship and improve its overall record to a stellar 46-5. Walker has a group of outside hitters that is led by Kaitlyn Rodriguez and senior Callaway Cason is a dependable setter to keep the Wolverines in attack mode. In Walker’s 3-0 win over Savannah Christian, Cason notched 40 assists and Rodriguez smashed 19 of the team’s 47 total kills. Photos courtesy of Pope HS Volleyball and Chrystal Moore

alton and Lassiter emerged out of a semifinal field that featured all four playoff qualifiers out of the loaded Region 5-AAAAAAA. No. 1 seed Walton swept No. 4 seed Roswell to punch its finals ticket and No. 3 seed Lassiter swept past No. 2 seed Etowah. Walton is the state’s most decorated volleyball program and the Lady Raiders sit one match away from winning their 14th alltime state crown. Walton’s tight grip on the state’s highest classification over the last two decades has limited the amount of other programs that have captured state titles and Lassiter will be attempting to take home its first. The two schools met twice during the regular season. In the first meeting, Walton dropped the first set 25-27, but took the next three (25-18, 25-23, 25-17) to score a 3-1 win. Their most recent meeting came on Oct. 9 and Walton swept its way to a 3-0 win (25-14, 25-17, 25-16).

llatoona toppled No. 1 ranked Alpharetta with a dominant 3-0 win in the semifinals to advance to its second-straight finals—the Bucs fell 3-1 last year to Pope. In Tuesday’s win over Alpharetta, the Bucs took the first set 25-21 and rode that momentum to close out a 25-13 victory in the second set. They also jumped out to a 16-5 lead in the third before cruising to victory. Defending state champion Pope was swept by host Sequoyah 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-17). Sequoyah previously won a state title in 2014, but Allatoona is still in search of its first. Sequoyah has put together an outstanding 41-1 season to reach this year’s finals and its only loss came to Alpharetta on Aug. 24. The Lady Chiefs have won all three meetings against Allatoona this season, scoring victories of 2-1 (25-21, 25-27, 15-8), 2-0 (25-17, 25-19) and 3-1 (25-16, 25-23, 21-25, 2519) in the Region 6-AAAAAA championship on Oct. 12.

imilar to Class AAAAAAA and AAAAAA, the Class AAAAA state championship will pair two region rivals against each other with 3-AAAAA top seed McIntosh and No. 3 seed Whitewater. McIntosh is an outstanding 35-1 this season with its only loss coming to Alpharetta early in the season. Currently, the Lady Chiefs are riding a 33-match winning streak. Included in that streak is McIntosh’s dominant 2-0 (25-15, 25-8) win over Whitewater on Sept. 10. Whitewater’s run to the championship features their thrilling five-set win over No. 2 seed Starr’s Mill. In the victory, sophomore Ashli-Amari Cox posted a career-high 12 total blocks and was deservingly named Player of the Match. This same defensive impact will be key against McIntosh, which has a potent combination of power with juniors Erykah Lovett and Ngozi Iloh and sophomore Alexa Markley. In McIntosh’s regular-season win over Whitewater, Iloh (9), Markley (8) and Lovett (4) combined for 21 of the team’s 29 total kills. Locust Grove

BLESSED TRINITY TITANS Head Coach: Allison Boes
B
lessed Trinity and St. Pius will face off in the Class AAAA championship, marking the second time these teams have met this season with the previous match resulting in a win for the Golden Lions. Both teams were flawless this season in their respective regions, and are currently both ranked Top 10 in the state. Defending champ St. Pius has only given up one set throughout its stellar postseason run to the finals, this set coming against NorthsideColumbus in the quarterfinals. However, on the other side of the net, Blessed Trinity has yet to let an opponent take a set in the playoffs, sweeping each team en route to the Titans’ first finals appearance since a runner-up finish in 2017 to Marist. The Golden Lions offensive attack is fueled by a pair of sophomores in Kate LaRocco and Lura Underwood, with senior Maggie McCurdy also making heavy contributions. Blessed Trinity is paced by seniors Alyssa Parodi and McKenna Nelson along with sophomore Cate Wright. Woodward Academy

2019 GHSA STATE VOLLEYBALL FINALS
CLASS AAA T
he Pace Academy Knights find themselves in a familiar position as they reach the finals for a fourth consecutive year. They’ll be met by their usual finals foe Westminster, who also has a large share of championship experience, advancing to the finals each of the last eight seasons. Over their past three finals meetings, Pace Academy sits atop Westminster with two state titles with the Wildcats claiming just one. Junior Mary Emily Morgan and sophomore Ashley Vincent will be a big part of the Wildcats’ plan to take down the two-time defending champs, with juniors Sue Vellanki and Camryn Brewer rounding out a terrific squad. The Knights are led by a trio of seniors in Sasha Ratliff, Lucy Ferry and Ada Agolli. Westminster boasted a 2-0 record against the Knights in the regular season, proving they have what it takes to walk away with the school’s ninth volleyball state title in school history. However, this electric Pace Academy team won’t walk away from a potential three-peat so easily. Westminster 3
