Introducing our first instalment of our ‘My City’ series, coming all the way from sunny California U.S.A, we have an exclusive interview with Los Angeles-based DJ and Producer Aram Abrams. From nighttime rendezvous to daytime chillouts, we delve into the life of an L.A. DJ by showcasing his favourite hotspots. But we’re no travel agency, so don’t expect a tourist’s guide to Universal Studios, the Hollywood Walk of Fame or Disneyland. Oh no, they’re so ten years ago… Instead, Aram is going to show you the hidden gems you absolutely can’t miss out on. So if you’re heading to Cali anytime soon, Let DJ and Producer Aram Abrams take you in his stylish stride through the West Coast in his hometown.

My favourite thing about Exchange is that it’s a club in downtown L.A. It kinda has this underground vibe that translates into some kind of downtown adventure. This was my second home on the weekends, I had a loft one block down at the time and was practically sleepwalking there. All the top DJs play there so it was beyond convenient. There’s a stairway as you’re entering the club, it’s a bit suspenseful hearing the bass and crowd as you’re walking up the stairs. There was this Hard Summer after party last year that went till 6am, that was probably one of the best afters I’ve ever been to! The place was electric. I remember people pulling up in their escalades and disappearing somewhere in the club. “THERE WAS THIS HARD SUMMER AF TER PART Y L AST YEAR THAT WENT TILL 6AM, THAT WAS PROBABLY ONE OF THE BEST AF TERS I’VE EVER BEEN TO!”

I used to intern at a showroom in Hollywood that was situated really close to the Hollywood sign. One day I stumbled upon this trail, it has a great view of L.A. and is also a really close backdrop for photoshoots with the Hollywood sign. There are no signs to get to the trail because it’s somewhat private but I like the trail because it’s lesser known, and you can ride a horse up the mountain too, which is pretty fun and random!

MARIX CAFE My first year in L.A. was pretty much spent lying on the beach so we would just hit up the restaurants nearby. One of my favourites was this Mexican restaurant on the cusp of Malibu and Santa Monica called Marix. Their happy hour is the shit and lasts longer than most places. We would ride our bikes from the beach and go towards Malibu and end up at this place. Marix has a really chill beach crowd. You can frequently spot celebs hanging out there too, I saw comic brat extraordinaire David Spade there a couple times. Actually, if Marix was a celebrity it would be David Spade. Haha.

SANTEE ALLE Y Santee Alley is great to go with a couple friends if you want to have a random shopping day. It’s in the fashion district of L.A. so you’ll find things that are trending. I always find sunglasses and wrist candy there. I lose accessories really fast so it’s great that everything is so inexpensive. Santee Alley is such a visual stimulation too, it’s an immersive experience walking down that street. People are offering you things left and right, it’s also another great place for filming or photo-shoots. This is one of my favourite spots for impromptu filming.

HOME TOUR: BENJI MADDEN, THE ACCIDENTAL DESIGNER The Madden Brothers guitarist invites us into his renovated Nichols Canyon bungalow.

bungalow in Nichols Canyon, Los Angeles, CA. Benji Madden's last home renovation was "kind of a nightmare," The musician tells us. "I had people designing, and they could never get what I wanted because I'm very particular." With a new album debuting this summer to launch The Madden Brothers (his much anticipated collaboration with brother, Joel) he didn't want a lot to take care of around the house-- or to be in an apartment building. So Madden purchased a two-bedroom, three-bath home in Los Angeles's Nichols Canyon (private but manageable), but this time, he took the design into his own hands.

AS GOOD AS NEW

"I wanted it to feel a bit more open, so I took out two walls, and I opened up the whole main part of the house," he says. With the help of a timely and efficient contractor, Andres Ariza, the musician also completely renovated the kitchen and all three bathrooms, installed new oak floors, and replaced plumbing in a matter of just five months. "I'm not on tour, and I'm home, so I thought, why not try to do it myself?"

GREY GARDENS

The only area Madden didn't renovate is the patio, but its landscaping did receive some attention. "The cool thing about this house is it's a little bit like a secret garden," he says. "When I first found the property, it was all overgrown. You could have seen and thought "Oh this place is falling apart.' So it was cool to kind of clean it up, uncover it, and bring it back to life."

INTO THE LIGHT

In a way, Madden's interior style was revived as well. "My last house was really, really goth -- with covered windows, heavy curtains over everything, and all dark imagery," Madden says. "This house has so many windows, and it's in the canyon. I think I kind of just outgrew being in the dark all the time." White monogrammed bedding, a slipcovered linen sofa, and all-white walls give Madden's home a lighter feeling, a look that helps to showcases the shapely furniture and unique finishes he's curated. "I don't really see myself as a designer," he says, "but I know what I like and it's very simple." A few relics from the dark age remain: an edited collection of skulls, include a little bronze one made for him by his favorite artist, Wes Lang "I love stuff that's gothic, but for me to live in it every day, I just think the simpler the better."

WINTER 2014

MY ST YLE;

A L K A R U S

PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF : Dany Dos Santos, I’m the man behind the nickname Alkarus. 23 years old, student, blogger and model occasionally. From Dijon, France.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST DEVELOP YOUR PASSION FOR STYLE? Quite naturally. I always take care of my style, but I decided to exhibit it on the web from the moment I found my own style, my own fashion taste.

theidleman.com

WHAT DOES STYLE MEAN TO YOU? This is a lifestyle, a way to express our personalities and our moods. It allows you to choose how to express yourself in anyway, style is a reflection of your life. It will grow through your meeting, your travel and what you see in the streets everyday…My style is just my life’s footprint!

WINTER 2014

M Y

S T Y L E ;

A L K A R U S

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE? I can’t specify my style. Often I mix several basic styles. I don’t like to constrict myself to one style, that makes it tasteless and boring.

WHO OR WHAT ARE YOUR STYLE INSPIRATIONS? My daily life. I like to look at the style I see in the streets/ web.,whatever the style. That allows me to see what I can do, but above all what I must avoid doing because the most important thing for me is to avoid the dress error. If you are not mistaken, your look will be great.

WHAT ONE ITEM SHOULD EVERYONE HAVE IN HIS OR HER WARDROBE? Creeper brogue black shoes

WHAT ARE YOUR STYLE DO’S AND DON’T? For style don’t, try to avoid dress error like a discordances of colours, style do’s, wearing what you like, and strive for a minimalist look on the whole.

HIGH STREET OR HIGH END? (WHY)

theidleman.com

Both are complementary. High end for essential pieces like shoes, jacket or suit. High street to grow your wardrobe easier with basic and trendy pieces. (sweatshirt, shirt, trousers etc.)

DO YOU THINK IT IS IMPORTANT FOR PEOPLE TO HAVE A SENSE OF STYLE? Like painting, sculpture or writing, style is a choice of expression. The fashion style is my choice and some people choose other ways, so I don’t think having sense of style is important for everybody.

BETWEEN DEATH, BLINDNESS OR LIVING VEGETABLE, THE ALMIGHTY GAVE HIM NONE OF THE ABOVE; INSTEAD HE GAVE HIM LIFE. DEFYING THE ODDS,

Diagnosed with a life-threatening benign brain tumor, Rick Genest at the age of 15 underwent a surgery that many had not survived in the past. Between death, blindness or living vegetable, the Almighty gave him none of the above; instead he gave him life. Defying the odds, he literally jumped off of the Grim Reapers deck of cards and began a new life. The squeegee kid on the streets on Montreal had his first tattoo and became obsessed with body modification. By age 21, he was renamed Rico The Zombie Boy.

theidleman.com

Together with now retired tattoo artist Frank Lewis, the masochistic prince tortures himself with painful tattoos and obsesses over death is in a constant in battle with his inner demons. His shocking exterior is an expression of his inner struggle between good versus evil.

Let’s discuss your history. How did you get introduced into doing such iconic fashion moments such as the Thierry Mugler campaign, which led to the Lady Gaga video for Born this way in 2011 ? After many years of working on my tattoo, it started to take more shape. It wasn’t uncommon for people to take pictures of me. I was doing side gigs and modelling for photographers. I was someone who would standout in shoots. My first fashion magazine was through a guy I met in the street; named Ludo with Tuxedo Agency. He had me to take some flicks and published it in a magazine called Dressed To Kill. It ended up being a big enough magazine to get the attention of Nicola Formichetti, from there on out he kept inviting me to work along with him and his projects which ultimately got me to the Lady Gaga video.

You story continues to grow. How has this attention parlayed into an acting career? You just completed a movie with Keanu Reeves? We were on film location in Budapest. It was my first role with a line. I have done movies with what is called figuration before. But this was my first big production with a speaking role and it is scheduled to come out in November 2015

What was your role in the movie? I understand there is an action scene? Well, I haven’t seen the final cut, so let’s hope it makes it. It’s a really large budget film by Universal Studios. It’s going to be a 3D movie. The set was huge. I was really excited because I love Pirates. It’s a Pirate and Samurai movie, which is something I was very happy to be part of the movie.

You recently were the focus of a body modification documentary. Can you share with us your role in this film and what does body modification mean to you? Body modification means freedom, controlling your image to me. Many people in your life try to push you in a certain direction. It may be teachers, parents or authority figures that push you in places that may not work for you and you have to be able to break away from that and be yourself.

In the video, lady gaga tapped into your essence by emulating your look with creating a make-up look on herself, in which she became a ‘zombie’ as well. How did you feel about gaga pulling parts of your essence into her ‘little monster world’? When we got there, it was a big surprise at first. We had a memo and originally the draft we had at first was supposed to be a Unicorn character in the clip and I was supposed to be a Punk Rock Unicorn hybrid. But, I thought the final result was great and I was extremely flattered to see her pull me into her whole ‘Monster Project’. Tell me about the underground world, which seems to bring a smile to your face. It seem that when you are thinking about your friends and this underground world you have embraced, you have a big smile behind the bones. This world is not exposed to the mainstream and you are the conduit that can bring this world to us.

Can we discuss your tumor and eventual tattoos? I’ll say, living life everyday at its fullest when you got nothing to lose. This is after you realize how fragile life is, and you start grasping reality every day. Being surrounded by every day is living on the edge; no pun intended. I was living on rooftops and under bridges and every day was one day at a time. That’s when I started my project.

This project brought you into a complete different direction. How did it connect with your moment in which you faced with going through a very serious surgery? How did your brush with death affect your life? In the face of death… I had a pretty hard life before the surgery as well. When it was going down like that… I couldn’t deal with it. I was saying, “No way!” I was being born in this world just to be put back down. That was hard to deal with, so I fought it. I said no way. Don’t believe in any religious propaganda or anything. But when I was under the knife, I prayed to God. I told God that if I get a chance in my life to come through this I would do my best to change the world. I just fought, I fought, I fought my whole life! And I have a lot to pay back.

theidleman.com

What is your driving force? What is your mantra? I always had a hard head and I am very persistent. For better or worse you reap what you sow. The fearless generation… I’m saying… we gotta stick up to our bullies. Especially, in the age of my youth, everyone says with all the protests going on… what has the industrial revolution left for our generation? I’m saying that to not fall for that not having anything to gain. We can take the world back. Being independent is power and we got to find the power in ourselves.

How to Dress for a Creative Job Interview So you’ve spent countless hours perfecting your CV, re-writing your cover letter and trawling job sites for vacancies, and now after months of little to no response you finally receive an acknowledgement, inviting you for an interview. But just when you thought the hardest part was over, it’s time to face your biggest challenge yet: what to wear.

THE IDLE MAN - STYLE GUIDE

If you’re going for a job in say finance, law or any other typically suitand-tie wearing industry then you won’t go far wrong with exactly that: a suit and tie. However, if you happen to be going for a job interview in a creative industry then knowing what to wear can be more challenging. Just like when writing your CV, you want to show off both your creativity and personality in order to grab the attention of the reader and show them that you over everyone else deserve the job. Well, the same applies when determining what you wear to your interview. First impressions always count, so the minute you get called into that room you don’t want to blow your chances due to something you’re wearing.

PHOTOGR APHS OF ;

French-born, New York-based photographer Franck Bohbot shoots public spaces with an eye for the cinematic. His studies of empty cinemas, parks and unusually deserted Manhattan streets hang in the balance between documentary and fiction in depictions of the widely mythologised East Coast twilight and West Coast sun.

THE IDLE MAN RECOMMENDS:

Ewen Spencer We’re back for another installment of “The Idle Man Recommends…”and this month we’re bringing you the dynamic work of photographer, Ewen Spencer. Starting out his career shooting for iconic magazine titles such as Sleazenation and The Face, Spencer photographs at the front line – if not in the very centre – of youth culture and has extensively documented thriving subcultures such as the UK Garage. His in-your-face/fly-on-the-wall photographs of the sexy and flamboyant UK garage scene at its height resulted in a published book, ‘UKG’, released last year as well as a short film he shot alongside, titled “Brandy and Coke.” being aired on Channel 4. “Brandy and Coke” was also recently nominated for a Lovie Award.

THE IDLE MAN RECOMMENDS

As well as the publishing of ‘UKG’ in 2013, Ewen has an extensive library of self-published books, profiling social documentary work on young people across Europe in a series of ‘zines titled ‘Guapamente’ as well as following The White Stripes for four years as they toured in ‘Threes a Crowd’. This guy has seen it all. Spencer’s work is bold. Larger than life. You might also recognize his work from the original Channel 4 advert for the first series of Skins and has recently collaborated with Smirnoff on their most recent advertising campaign. He follows tribes of people and fully immerses himself into the middle of whats going on; the result being an honest, intimate documentation of the people he surrounds himself with. WE PRESENT TO YOU HERE, A SELECTION OF IMAGES FROM HIS INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED ‘UKG’ BOOK.

MUSIC MONDAY: INTERVIEW WITH: SIGMA

IN THE LAST SIX MONTHS SIGMA HAVE BECOME A HOUSEHOLD NAME ON THE CHARTS. THEIR SECOND NUMBER ONE OF THE YEAR, ‘CHANGING’, FEATURING PALOMA FAITH, SHOWED THEIR NUMBER ONE REMIX OF KANYE WEST’S TUNE, ENTITLED ‘NOBODY TO LOVE, WAS NO FLUKE. BUT IT HASN’T ALWAYS BEEN THIS WAY FOR THE DRUM ‘N’ BASS DUO AND THEIR RECENT CATAPULT TO THE TOP OF THE UK CHARTS HAS COME AFTER EIGHT YEARS WITHIN THE DRUM ‘N’ BASS SCENE.

We were lucky enough to catch up with one half of the chart dominating pair, Joe, to talk through the history of Sigma. Eight career defining moments accompanied by eight tunes that have really shaped their sound and brought them to where they are today.

I N T E RV I E W W I T H

2006

They started off as a three-piece production team and they were just finding their feet.

“We were just really fine tuning our production and playing about with different sounds. Artists that were really killing it back then, for us, were the likes of pendulum and chase & status with tunes like duppy man and hold your colour. We were very new to the whole drum ‘n’ bass scene as artists but tunes like these were ones everyone wanted to be making.” After they all relocated to their respective hometowns, working at long distance just didn’t make sense and three became two. Sigma was born.

A year later and Sigma, as we know them now, were making moves.

“Some people may not know that we actually had a two-sided single released on Viper Recordings. This was a real foot in the door and to be released on Viper was a great feeling. Whenever we’ve released on a label it’s always been so important that we have creative freedom and it’s something we’ve really made sure we have every step of the way.”

2008

2008 saw the guys ensuring they had total creative freedom as they set up their own label – Life Recordings.

After talking to a few labels it just became clear that they wanted us to hit certain sounds and we just felt really confined in what we could make. It can be really frustrating when you’ve spent time making a tune or EP or whatever it is and people want you change your sound.

2009

Hospital are one of the biggest labels in the Drum ‘n’ Bass world and just three years after founding Sigma, they had their first release on the legendary imprint.

2010

MUSIC MONDAY : IN T ERVIE W WI T H : SIGM A

“That was a great year because we had the release on Hospital that did really well as part of the Sick Music compilation. But on top of that we had our second release on Life Recordings called Nexus. We really felt like we were getting somewhere and the electronic music scene was really exciting because you had Dubstep coming through with people like Rusko really changing the game, especially for Dubstep.” After their steady success in 2009, the guys then teamed up with another Drum ‘n’ Bass DJ who has enjoyed mainstream success – DJ Fresh. It was also in this year that we brought out our Stand Tall EP which was when Dubstep was really dominating the electronic scene. That EP was us saying we weren’t just going to follow the crowd and start making Dubstep and that’s something we still stand by today. We’ll never make a certain type of track just because we’re expected to.

2012 … and what better way to figure out what sound you want to hit than to go on tour. The pair played out globally and even supported DJ Fresh on his Live UK Tour, whilst also putting out a huge remix for Rusko. “2012 was great because we got to see what tunes work really well in a live performance whilst we were touring with DJ Fresh. We also got to see how certain crowds around the world reacted to certain tunes whilst we were doing our own international shows and the whole year was just amazing for inspiration. It was a necessary break from the studio as well. The remix we put out that year, though, of Rusko’s Somebody to Love was unbelievably well received. We turned it into a completely different tune and we were so happy with the response.”

2013 After finally finding some sort of stability and really fine tuning their sound, 2013 was the year where everything came together for Sigma. “When we signed to Insanity management everything just really fell into place. They’ve always understood the direction we want to go in, they let us do our own thing and they’ve got all the contacts we need to really push forward. We did a few more remixes last year too, the Ellie Goulding remix was one that we really blended the more bass driven sounds.”

Music Monday: Interview With:

S I G M A

2014 Then we hit the ground-breaking year for the boys. Before 2014 their highest single, Rudeboy, featuring Doctor, came with their new management and peaked in the UK Chart at 54. The guys never imagined just six months later they would be sitting at number one. “The Kanye West remix was just crazy. We knew it would work well at the Drum ‘n’ Bass tempo but for it to do as well as it did was such a shock. Over the festival season it was probably the most played tune, along with Route94’s tune My Love. It just gave us the biggest boost and then when ‘Changing’ went to number it was just amazing. That tune was a really good collaborative project with Ella Eyre who’s a really talented writer and working with Paloma Faith was another great piece of work from our management. Plus she looks great in the video that shot in Miami, we still haven’t got over all this stuff. It’s just mental.”

KENDRICK LAMAR VS TYCHO “VIBE WALK” (BREAK SCIENCE REMIX) Break Science, the duo who are both apart of the Pretty Lights live band while also turning out a nonstop flow of their own material, are back with one of their hottest tracks to date. They have flipped Kendrick Lamar's hit "Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe" into a chilled out unreal remix that you won't be able to stop replaying. They even managed to slip in apart of the instrumental in Tycho's "A Walk", which took things to the top. Everything is spliced together perfectly with their own signature electro-soul styling sounding more crisp than ever.

OK GO HUNGRY GHOSTS OK Go's songs are a lot like their brilliant viral-hit videos: cute, ingeniously crafted and entertaining, but not something you need to experience more than a few times. Their fourth LP veers from Princely falsetto pop ("I'm Not Through") to sweeping altrock ("The One Moment") to pretty, acoustic reverie ("Lullaby"), with Flaming Lips producer Dave Fridmann adding a bright, inviting polish. But the songs aren't quite memorable enough to hold your attention, or make you wonder if there's anything going on beneath their expert exteriors. A serious New Order crush comes through on "The Writing's on the Wall," which has an awesome eye-tricking video. The song itself is pretty OK too.

HOZIER A few months ago, 24-year-old Andrew Hozier-Byrne was a little-known Irish singer-songwriter. But his YouTube hit "Take Me to Church" won him a wave of insta-hype, and his debut LP earns it. Blessed with a sensual singing voice and a seemingly bottomless well of lapsed-Catholic-style conflict, Hozier channels Van Morrison's Celtic R&B, Southern soul and Black Keys-style garage blues into intimately roiling songs like "Angel of Small Death and the Codeine Scene." On the Irish-folk lullaby "In a Week," he promises some lucky lass eternal rapture through the sweet embrace of shared death: "We'd become the flowers/We'd feed well the land." So down-to-earth!

BEN HOWARD I Forget Where We Were English folkie Ben Howard has several EPs and a 2011 album to his name, but this follow-up is his strongest statement yet. From the first discordant strains of "Small Things" to the meditative "All Is Now Harmed," Howard strikes a sure-footed balance between the lilting ballads we've come to expect from past releases (see the new album's "She Treats Me Well) and more haunting dirges that carry the weight of remorse (check the title track). I Forget Where We Were delivers a darker Howard, one who embraces loneliness and disappointment instead of shying away from them. As mild as the music might often sound, this is an album that cuts deep.

THE IDLE MAN FILM REVIEWS INTERSTELLAR

THE WHITE KNIGHT RISES: CHRISTOPHER NOLAN'S SPACE ODYSSEY BOLDLY BLENDS THE COSMIC AND THE INTIMATE. It’s damn near three hours long. There’s that. Also, Interstellar is a space odyssey with no UFOs, no blue-skinned creatures from another planet, no alien bursting from the chest of star Matthew McConaughey. It reveals a hopeful side of filmmaker Christopher Nolan that will piss off Dark Knight doomsayers. And, hey, didn’t Alfonso Cuarón just win an Oscar for directing Gravity? How long are audiences expected to get high on rocket fumes?

BLAH, BLAH, BLAH. BITCH, BITCH, BITCH. What the neg-heads are missing about Interstellar is how enthralling it is, how gracefully it blends the cosmic and the intimate, how deftly it explores the infinite in the smallest human details. Of course, Nolan has never been the cold technician of his reputation. Watch Memento again, or The Prestige, or the undervalued Insomnia. The sticking point here is that Interstellar finds Nolan wearing his heart on his sleeve. Nothing like emotion to hold a cool dude up to ridicule. But even when Nolan strains to verbalize feelings, and the script he wrote with his brother Jonathan turns clunky, it's hard not to root for a visionary who's reaching for the stars. Which brings us to a plot full of deepening surprises I’m not going to spoil. The poster for Interstellar presents McConaughey surveying a wasteland. It’s meant to be Saturn, but it could just as well be Earth, where environmental recklessness has morphed the planet into a Dirt Bowl starving and choking its citizens. Nolan spends the first third of the film in the American farm belt of the near future, introducing us to widower Cooper (McConaughey), a former test pilot, who depends on his father-in-law (John Lithgow) to help him raise 15-year-old son Tom (Timothée Chalamet) and 10-year-old daughter Murphy (Mackenzie Foy, superb). Like her dad, Murph is a rebel who refuses to buy into her school’s official dictum that the Apollo space program was a lie. In case you haven’t noticed, McConaughey is on a roll. And he partners beautifully with the sublime Chastain, who infuses Murph with amazing grit and grace. Familial love is the topic here, not the romantic or sexual kind. How does that figure into space exploration? Nolan gives Hathaway a monologue about it. But dialogue is no match for the flinty eloquence shining from the eyes of McConaughey and Chastain. They are the bruised heart of Interstellar, a film that trips up only when it tries to make love a science with rules to be applied. In 2001, Kubrick saw a future that was out of our hands. For Nolan, our reliance on one another is all we’ve got. That’s more the stuff of provocation than a Hallmark e-card. Nolan believes it’s better to think through a movie than to just sit through it. If that makes him a white knight, Godspeed.

ST VINCENT

An aging, hard-drinking hardass gets reformed by the sweet innocence of the kid next door. I know, I wanted to gag too. But hold on. St. Vincent will dodge your impulse to projectile vomit. For that, all hail Bill Murray who whacks away at the script's sentimental softballs like A-Rod in full swing. Murray plays Vincent McKenna, a Brooklyn drunk and Nam vet who likes living alone with his cat in a Sheepshead Bay house that gives "dump" a bad name. Vincent's no loner. He hits the bar and the track and regularly boffs a pregnant Russian hooker named Daka (Naomi Watts salvaging a role conceived in clichĂŠ). Yup, Vincent can still get it up.

WHIPLASH

If I tell you that this diabolically entertaining spellbinder is about a student (Miles Teller) trying to master the arcane art of jazz drumming at an elite music conservatory, you might get all bored and pissy and pass on it. That would be stupid. Whiplash is no Dead Drummers Society. Written and directed by the gifted Damien Chazelle (Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench), from his own experience of getting schooled on the sticks, Whiplash is a battle to the death. It's also a provocation: How much of what makes you human will you sacrifice for a desire to truly excel? When Andrew Neyman (Teller) locks horns with bullying instructor Terence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons), there's blood on the walls and Andrew's psyche. Terence has a Ph.D. in mind-fucking. Hell awaits if you're not on his tempo. Chazelle, 29, stages these S&M drum duels with strafing mastery. And the two lead actors will blow you away. Teller (The Spectacular Now), a drummer himself, is a young actor of startling power and nuance. And Simmons, who can play evil (HBO's Oz), gentle (Juno) and all stops between,

LIFE HACKS Improve Your Running With Nike Running Coach Gil Cramer

theidleman.com

Whether you fancy yourself as the next Mo Farah, or you simply enjoy going for a jog once in a blue moon, we’ve enlisted the help of Nike Running Coach Gil Cramer, to share his expertise on the multiple benefits of running at different times of the day. So you think running is good for you any time of the day, and you’d be right. There are, however, three times of the day that running can help to benefit your body in different ways. Being aware of how these benefits will help you target what time of day you train in order to help meet your goals.

The early bird run is perfect for power work – something high-intensity like sprints or short intervals. The reason for this is that after a good nights sleep and light breakfast your muscles are fresh and ready for a powerful, highintensity session. To get the most out of the run try 100 meters sprints with 20 second rests in between for 15 minutes.

The lunchtime run After a full morning sitting at your desk with people shouting instructions at you and your boss looking for work you haven’t yet had the time to complete, your stress levels may be higher than normal. This is the best opportunity to get out and go for a relaxing half hour run and let the mind roam free. When you return you’ll feel fresh, relaxed and ready to conquer the rest of your day. For the best result try looking for new routes every week and explore the city around you.

The end-of-day run By far the best time of day to run if your goal is to reduce your fat percentage. The easiest way to explain how your body burns fat is this – if you are using more energy then you put in you will need to use fat as energy to cover the remaining part. At the end of a long day you might not have had sufficient food to cover all your energy needs that means you are in an energy deficit. If you choose to run now you will become even more deficient in energy however your body will still need to work, so it will search for energy in the form of fat and use that to power you through the session. For best results make sure to plan a healthy meal for after your run. Alternating between these workouts will ensure a better body, faster running speeds and a better day at the office.

Les Benjamins SS15 PREVIEW We preview Les Benjamins SS15 collection with its offerings of PAIX to all.

theidleman.com

While Les Benjamins AW14 may have focussed on the streets, SS15 was exiled to the desert. But, with camouflage prints made up entirely of flowers and more detailing than ever, this is certainly no bad thing. Somewhat ironically for a collection that employs a dominant palette of brown and combat green, ‘PAIX’ – the French for ‘peace’ – is the SS15 slogan embossed across the Ready-towear ‘Black-Line’ sweatshirts and t-shirts. Obviously, the collection is a long way from resembling a soldier’s uniform ,

If it did we’d have signed up to Uniform Dating long ago – but what it does artfully incorporate is the military tendency towards functionality. As we’d expect, Les Benjamins SS15 maintains the brand’s reputation for using only the finest pima cotton and finishing techniques. Combining military tailoring with a contemporary aesthetic, the collection is a full ready-to-wear wardrobe made in Istanbul.
