In this the second part of O’Casey’s great Dublin Trilogy, the ambitions of the Boyle family are set against the political and social events of Ireland’s War of Independence. Set in a tenement house, Juno and the Paycock is an epic tale of survival and vengeance punctuated by dreadful poverty. Juno, the spirited matriarch of the Boyle household tries to keep her family together while it is being pulled apart by growing political unrest. Her husband, Captain Jack Boyle drinks his way through his days with his side-kick Joxer Daly, while their children fail tragically in their own search for a better life. When the family learns of an inheritance from a distant relative, it seems that all their problems will be solved, but will they manage to transcend the events that conspire to keep them in their place?

Hugo Hamilton’s best-selling memoir, The Speckled People, has been hailed as an ‘instant classic’ and has been translated into twenty languages. The Gate Theatre is delighted to present the world première of the author’s adaptation of this extraordinary work. The Speckled People tells the profoundly moving story of a young boy trapped in a language war. Set in 1950’s Ireland, this is a gripping, poignant, and often a very funny family drama. As a young boy, Hamilton struggled with what it means to be speckled, “half and half... Following the phenomenal success of Silver Stars in 2009, Brokentalkers return to the Festival with this powerful new show, which deals with the experiences of men and women who were incarcerated as children in Catholic residential care institutions. A haunting and moving piece, this highly anticipated new show has already been described as one of the theatrical highlights of 2010 following its In Development presentation at last year’s Festival. With choreography from internationally renowned Eddie Kay (DV8/Frantic Assembly) and original music by Seán Millar (writer of Silver Stars), The Blue Boy combines live performance and recorded interviews with multi-media and film, and gives fresh theatrical voice to recently revealed stories of childhood abuse in Ireland.

Welcome to the Bayou, a part of the city feared and loathed wherein lies the infamous Bayou Mansions; a sprawling stinking tenement block, where curtain-twitchers and peeping-toms live side by side, and the wolf... is always at the door. When Agnes Eaves and her daughter arrive late one night amongst the cockroaches, crime and corruption, does it signal hope in this hopeless place, or has the real horror only just begun? Using their trademark macabre cabaret style, this wickedly twisted new show from the multiple award-winning company behind the 2008 Festival hit Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea, has been likened to a mixture of Fritz Lang, Charles Dickens and Tim Burton. When Shakespeare’s King Lear retires and divides his kingdom between his three daughters, he experiences a powerful disappointment: none of his daughters seem to love him adequately in return. Drawing from Shakespeare’s greatest tragedy, this tender yet brutally honest production dares to show the painful realities of ageing and parenthood that affect us all but are seldom spoken. Standing on stage with their real-life fathers, performers expose their personal grievances without mercy: legal succession, hereditary diseases, home care plans, gas receipts, and an overbearing sense of guilt – all subject to public negotiation and scrutiny.

Amongst the few roles for black actors in the western world, the character of Othello remains the most celebrated. Yet Shakespeare’s famous moor is not widely known in Africa. Across this cultural divide, Ivory Coast-born performer Franck Edmond Yao and German actress Cornelia Dörr now collide. Sharp, political and sensual, Othello c’est qui (Othello who’s that) plays with the ordinary and the trivial clichés surrounding Othello and Desdemona but gradually develops into a tough confrontation between two cultures marked by extreme emotions, prejudices, misunderstandings and contrasts. A mischievous but hard-hitting exchange, this frank and very human production won first prize at the 2009 Theatre Festival IMPULSE, and has charmed and stimulated audiences across Europe ever since.

This programme of intimate theatre experiences paints a very private portrait of Dublin city and its inhabitants. Centring on issues often ignored – some in the past, some present – Laundry, Trade, Request Programme and World’s End Lane – give us a glimpse into an often forgotten facet of Irish society.

A scathing indictment of government indifference, cynicism and incompetence in a forgotten township, Itsoseng is the gripping story of a local man whose hope of a new life is crushed with the realities of a corrupt system. Exploring themes rarely seen on the South African stage, Molusi's impassioned story of hope has taken the world by storm since winning a host of awards including an Edinburgh Fringe First in 2008 and the 2010 US Black Alliance Theater Award. Presided over by infamous madams and fortune tellers, lost strangers sought sex, guidance and the divine. World’s End Lane is an adrenaline fuelled exchange created for just three audience members at a time. Each audience member is invited to surrender to their own Monto experience in this immersive, challenging and interactive journey. Since its inception in 1994, Irish Theatre Institute has pioneered international networking and promotion for Irish theatre companies and artists. The 18th annual International Theatre Exchange is a two day gathering of influential presenters and producers from across the world. Invited by ITI, they will engage with Irish companies and artists who have ‘ready for export’ productions or are working on projects with an attractive international dimension. Comprising bespoke one-toone meetings, panel discussions on topical industry issues, networking events, showcase and indevelopment performances, the Exchange is a must for all Irish producers of professional theatre who have an eye to international platforms. In the past two years alone, Irish companies have been invited to perform in London, Edinburgh, Auckland, Sydney, Tampere, Paris, Wiesbaden, New York, Cape Town and Grahamstown – can you afford to miss it?

Presented in association with Theatre Forum Described by past participants as “career changing,” a “rare amount of inspiration” and “a once in a lifetime opportunity,” The Next Stage is the artist development strand of the Festival. This challenging programme, spanning all 18 days of the Festival, is an intense combination of exposure to the highest quality theatre and active participation. In addition to a nearly exhaustive schedule of performances, there is a series of talks, masterclasses and physical workshops led by some of the world’s leading theatre makers. Past workshop leaders/speakers include Stephen Rea, Fiona Shaw, Deborah Warner, Lloyd Newson, Arpad Schilling, Declan Donnellan, Anne Bogart and Tim Crouch. Up to seventeen Irish theatre and dance practitioners from all disciplines will be chosen to participate. The intention is to expose artists to a rare selection of world class art during the Festival, to broaden and deepen their experience, to create an opportunity for engagement with the visiting artists through workshops and interviews and to encourage future collaborations between the participants.
