WELCOME to our 2015 season. This is an exciting year for us as it marks the first full one in our new Festival Theatre following its £22 million refurbishment. We are now firmly settled into our renewed spaces and benefiting hugely from the improved facilities. There could not be a more thrilling and ambitious production with which to launch the season than Alan Ayckbourn’s legendary boating comedy, Way Upstream. For this we will be transforming the Festival Theatre stage into a river, complete with a life-size boat. More memories will be made when we present two musicals, the celebrated Mack & Mabel and a new stage version of A Damsel in Distress. These major productions reinforce the Festival Theatre’s status as one of the best stages in the country. The Young Chekhov season offers, for the first time ever, the chance to see the master playwright’s first three plays, Platonov, Ivanov and The Seagull, in repertoire with one ensemble of actors. The plays can be enjoyed individually but seen together you will witness the birth of a genius, and the evolution of the dramatic voice that changed the course of theatre history. Other highlights include Willy Russell’s classic comedy, Educating Rita, and three outstanding modern dramas, Jeremy Sams’s translation of Jean Anouilh’s The Rehearsal, W. Somerset Maugham’s For Services Rendered and Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me by Frank McGuinness. This year we also celebrate Chichester Festival Youth Theatre’s 30th anniversary. Over the years CFYT has introduced thousands of young people to theatre, and created spectacular entertainment. To mark this achievement we present our most ambitious production yet. Running Wild, adapted from Michael Morpurgo’s novel, will be performed at Cass Sculpture Foundation, and promises to be a theatrically inventive and visually stunning experience. Finally, thank you for all the support you have given us to restore and renew our much-loved theatre. We are confident that 2015 will be one of the most important seasons ever at Chichester and look forward to welcoming you during the year ahead. ‘Boats are a society in miniature. Everyone has a role, everyone has a function.’ Four old friends, one cruising boat, two weeks off work, and the perfect setting of the beautiful River Orb. What could possibly go wrong? But even before the ignition key is turned, the outlook is not completely calm. Emma is worried about her onboard safety, captain Keith and his shipmate Alistair have trouble brewing back at their novelty goods business, and sun seeker June is far from happy with the standard of the accommodation. Waters get even choppier when the troubled crew bump into enigmatic seadog Vince, and his bohemian twitcher friend, Fleur. When they invite Vince on board, to hear tales of his remarkable seafaring adventures, relationships between these mismatched shipmates are about to become decidedly rocky. Way Upstream will see the Festival Theatre stage transformed into a river, complete with life-size boat, for an hilarious and searing exposé of the murky depths that lie beneath the glittering surfaces of friendship, love, desire and power. Nadia Fall makes her directorial debut at Chichester having recently directed Dara and Home at the National Theatre, and Hobson’s Choice at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre. Sarah Parish, well known from many television appearances including leading roles in Cutting It, Mistresses and W1A, makes her Chichester debut as June.

ANOUILH Translated by JEREMY SAMS ‘You can’t have a production of brilliance without the odd nervous breakdown.’ The Count, better known as Tiger, is famous for his spectacular parties. In three days’ time, in his elegant French chaˆ teau, his guests are to be treated to an evening of amateur dramatics, complete with lavish Louis XV costumes. The glamorous cast includes Tiger’s mistress, his wife, her lover, and Lucile, the beautiful young governess who looks after the chaˆ teau’s twelve resident orphans. But as soon as rehearsals begin it’s clear that this eighteenthcentury play will unleash just as much passion, shock and intrigue off stage as it will on. Soon it’s hard to know when the scheming twentieth-century cast are acting and when they’re not. Written in 1950, Anouilh’s savagely funny and devilishly clever comedy is a searing exposure of the characters we adopt, the truths we conceal and the secret roles we most passionately

want to play. At its heart is a profound question: what is performance, and why do we need it? Beginning in 1966 with The Fighting Cock, Chichester has an impressive tradition of bringing the great works of legendary playwright Jean Anouilh to the British stage with productions including Dear Antoine (1971), Eurydice (1990), Wild Orchids (2002) and The Waltz of the Toreadors (2007). This twentieth-century classic is presented in a celebrated translation by Jeremy Sams who also directs. One of the key translators of European drama, Sams is also a highly respected director with credits including The Sound of Music in the West End and Noises Off at the National Theatre, and The Water Babies at Chichester (2003).

‘Those guys told me angels were coming and sure enough, even in foggy old London town, miracles can happen.’ George is an American composer working at the Savoy Theatre in London. Maud is the thoroughly English Lady Marshmoreton, a beautiful socialite who lives in a castle with a ha-ha and a drawbridge. They really shouldn’t have met because George needs to complete his musical and Maud needs to marry most urgently, and already has someone totally unsuitable in mind. Luckily Maud’s fierce aunt, Lady Caroline, has a solution – she’s going to lock her lusty charge in the tower. Uplifting and wildly funny, this musical comedy is a tribute to English love with all its eccentricities. Based on a novel by P.G. Wodehouse, with songs by George and Ira Gershwin, A Damsel in Distress is well-known from the popular 1937 comedy film. This new stage musical is directed by the celebrated American director and choreographer, Rob Ashford, whose many accolades include a Tony Award, Olivier Award, Emmy Award, Drama Desk Award and Critics’ Circle Award. His most recent hits include the 2012 revival of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof with Scarlett Johansson, and Macbeth for the Manchester International Festival in 2013 with Kenneth Branagh and Alex Kingston.

‘But if you wanna change y’ have to do it from the inside, don’t y’?’ World-weary lecturer, Frank, has never met anyone like plain-speaking hairdresser Rita - until the Open University brings them together. Frank knows plenty. He can tell Rita that Yeats isn’t only a wine lodge, and that there’s a difference between Jane Austen and Ethel Austin. He can explain in detail why Chekhov is a comic genius. But he doesn’t know that learning can be dangerous and addictive. As Rita grows in confidence and ability, Frank begins to fear that her desire for academic knowledge might bury the fascinating, fresh woman who has brought him back to life. Willy Russell’s comic masterpiece has entertained audiences around the globe since it premiered in 1980, and went on to become an award-winning film. Michael Buffong is the acclaimed Artistic Director of Talawa Theatre Company, where his recent work includes All My Sons and Moon on a Rainbow Shawl. Lenny Henry makes his Chichester debut as Frank. His theatre credits include The Comedy of Errors at the National Theatre and award-winning performances in West End productions of Fences and Othello. Also making her Chichester debut is Lashana Lynch playing Rita. Her recent credits include Tybalt in Romeo and Juliet at the National Theatre’s The Shed.

‘We had some guts and some luck But we were just makin’ a buck Movies were movies were movies when I ran the show!’ Not long ago, and without saying a word, a group of pioneering film-makers changed the world. Helped by heroes in capes, and girls tied to the tracks, they made stars out of street kids, and riches from rags.

But for writer, director, producer and owner of Keystone Motion Picture Studios Mack Sennett, forging a film is the easy part - compared to working, and falling in love, with a stunning one-off like Mabel. This dazzling musical comedy is both a poignant love story and a riveting tribute to the grit and glamour of the era of silent movies. Based on the true romance between Hollywood legends Mack Sennett and Mabel Normand, Mack & Mabel received eight Tony Award nominations when it opened on Broadway in 1974. Music and lyrics are by Jerry Herman (La Cage aux Folles) and the book by Michael Stewart (Barnum, 42nd Street), the multi award-winning team behind the classic Broadway musical Hello, Dolly! This thrilling tale of trailblazers and stars is widely admired for its outstanding score including hits I Won’t Send Roses and Time Heals Everything. Olivier Award-winner Michael Ball returns to Chichester to play Mack Sennett, following his celebrated performance in Sweeney Todd (2011). His other recent credits include the BBC drama That Day We Sang and Hairspray in the West End and on tour. Artistic Director Jonathan Church’s most recent musical hits for Chichester include the award-winning Singin’ in the Rain (2011).

SOMERSET MAUGHAM

‘He may have been a very good naval officer. He was a very poor business man. That’s all there is to it.’ For men long returned from World War One, life is still changed forever. Some are struggling with life-changing injuries, while others are fighting to adapt to a vastly altered working world. It is a place these former heroes have not been prepared for, and where debt, redundancy and depression form a constant threat. Life for the women around these returned fighters is just as troubled. Husbands are now hard to find, and, for those desperate for children and family, any man can seem better than none. But this is a solution with troubling, life-long consequences. This engrossing drama is one of W. Somerset Maugham’s greatest plays. Written in 1932 it confronts with style and honesty the unspoken consequences of war, loss and trauma on one ordinary English family. Director Howard Davies’s many acclaimed productions for the RSC, the National Theatre, in the West End and on Broadway, have won him numerous Best Director Awards. In 2009 he made his debut at Chichester with The House of Special Purpose in the Minerva Theatre.

McGUINNESS

‘We are in a decidedly perilous position, to put it mildly.’ Adam, an American doctor, Edward, an Irish journalist, and Michael, an English academic, have little to unite them beyond being human in the same small space. Yet somehow, together, they determine to ward off madness and forestall despair. Somewhere lurk their unseen captors yet, in the cell, there are stories of adventure and love, there is song and laughter, and even a surge of writing, cocktail-drinking and movie-making. Based on the experiences of those taken hostage in Lebanon in the 1980s, Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me is playwright Frank McGuinness’s hymn to the defiant power of the human spirit and the creative imagination. First staged at Hampstead Theatre in 1992, it transferred to the West End before going on to win the 1993 New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Foreign Play. Director Michael Attenborough makes his Chichester debut. Whilst Artistic Director of the Almeida Theatre between 2002 and 2013, his award-winning productions included Measure for Measure and David Eldridge’s The Knot of the Heart. From 1996 to 2002 he was Principal Associate Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company. David Haig returns to Chichester to play Michael, following his appearance in Festival 2014’s highly acclaimed Pressure, which he also wrote.

YOUNG CHEKHOV THE BIRTH OF A GENIUS

Anton Chekhov is one of the undisputed masters of world drama. He is usually thought to hide himself behind his characters and stories, keeping his own personality well off-stage. But when he was young he wrote three plays, Platonov, Ivanov and The Seagull, which, with their thrilling sunbursts of youthful anger and romanticism, reveal a very different playwright from the one known by his mature, more familiar work. Now the Young Chekhov season brings these three blazing dramas together to offer audiences the chance for the first time ever to explore the birth of a revolutionary dramatic voice. The plays show a playwright freeing himself from the constraints of nineteenth-century melodrama and herald the shift into the twentieth century, and the birth of the modern stage. Young Chekhov promises to be an extraordinary event. Performed by one ensemble of actors, each play can be seen as a single performance or they can be enjoyed as one event, either over different days or as one intense theatrical experience on trilogy days. Anna Chancellor, James McArdle and Samuel West return to Chichester to lead a distinguished 22-strong ensemble. Anna Chancellor was last seen at Chichester in South Downs/ The Browning Version (2011) and Private Lives (2012), while James McArdle last appeared in A Month in the Country (2010) and more recently played King James I in The James Plays (Edinburgh Festival, National Theatre). Samuel West was last at Chichester in Doctor Faustus (2004) and Enron (2009). David Hare is a playwright and film-maker, whose work has been staged to huge acclaim around the world. Previous work at Chichester includes South Downs (2011). Director Jonathan Kent has worked on many celebrated and ground-breaking productions across theatre and opera. His most recent work at Chichester includes Gypsy (2014) and Private Lives (2012).

FESTIVAL THEATRE 28 September 14 November Russian schoolteacher, Mikhail Platonov, has a problem, one he has lived with all his life - he’s irresistible to women. Alongside the attentions of his home-loving wife, Sasha, he must also attend to the racing pulses of Maria Grekova, a young chemistry student, Sofya Yegorovna, a married acquaintance from his past, and most dangerously of all, one of Chekhov’s greatest creations, Anna Petrovna, a formidably intelligent widow. If that wasn’t enough, he’s broke, in debt, and about to lose his home. For the sanity of everyone, and the stability of society, something must be done about Platonov. Set in the blazing heat of the middle of nowhere, complete with criminals who live in the forest and a runaway train, this freewheeling comedy is a cry of defiance at the adult traps of conventionality and moral hypocrisy.

Director Jonathan Kent Set Designer Tom Pye Costume Designer Emma Ryott Lighting Designer Mark Henderson Sound Designer Paul Groothuis Casting Director Maggie Lunn

Nikolai Ivanov, a regional councillor and landowner, has tried to live his life in a bold new way, taking risks in everything from business to romance. Now his estate is failing, his wife is dangerously ill and he’s up to his neck in debt. To cap it all, he’s surrounded by malicious gossip. Against his better judgment he sees an irresistible opportunity, in the adoring form of Sasha Lebedev, daughter of the Chairman of the local council. She offers her devotion, youth and beauty, but also the considerable riches of her name. But can Ivanov survive the guilt and shame scandal would bring? Set in a remote backwater, this angry and outspoken play, streaked with satire, drink and anti-Semitism, is full of an outright passion Chekhov would soon forego in his later plays.

On a summer’s day in a makeshift theatre by a lake, a bold new play is to be performed. It is the work of a young, would-be playwright, Konstantin, who is searching for a new, more authentic dramatic form. The play stars his beautiful muse and neighbour, Nina. The assembled family audience includes his actress mother, Arkadina, who has just arrived from Moscow with the famous novelist, Trigorin. What happens during, and in the days immediately after, this play’s first performance will change not just the course of the summer, but the lives of everyone involved, for ever after. This masterly meditation on love and art is both comic and tragic, and marks the birth of the modern stage.
