Giving and receiving gifts at Christmas is a custom representative of the presents given to Jesus by the Wise Men. In Jewish holiday customs, gifts of coin are given to children as reward for learning their lessons. The last day of Kwanzaa, or Imani, focuses on gift giving as a means to honor the creative spirit and reaffirm self worth. Therefore, the gifts are often homemade rather than purchased. But whatever the purpose behind the gift - be it a small token for friend or family, a thank you for a treasured sitter or teacher, or a gesture to a party host - we have chosen some great options, all found right here in our local communities.

Did you know? The first Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center was erected in 1931, two years before the opening of Rockefeller Plaza, where the tree now draws thousands of tourists each year. The tradition began when construction workers hard at work on building Rockefeller Center decorated a roughly 20-foot tall balsam fir tree on Christmas Eve in 1931. Strings of cranberries and tin cans were among the items used to decorate the tree. While there was no tree in 1932, the first official tree was unveiled in 1933 in Rockefeller Plaza, and the lighting ceremony was broadcast over NBC Radio. The 1933 tree, at 50 feet tall, dwarfed the 1931 tree. However, the 1933 tree paled in comparison to the 10-ton Norway Spruce erected in 1999, which measured 100-feet tall and remains the tallest tree ever erected at Rockefeller Center. The tradition of the Rockefeller Center tree continues to evolve to this day, but the evergreen it is no longer lit with incandescent light bulbs. LED bulbs that consume a fraction of the energy of traditional bulbs are the bulbs of choice now. In addition, in 2007 Rockefeller Center partnered with Habitat for Humanity, who used the tree after it was taken down to furnish lumber for home construction.

For the music fans Many options available for the music lover in your family
M
usic remains an art form that evokes strong emotions and holds a special place in many a listener’s heart. The nearly universal appeal of music makes it a great gift come the holiday season, when shoppers may not always know what to buy a loved one. The following are a few gift ideas that are sure to have your favorite music fan singing your praises this holiday season.
Concert tickets Perhaps no gift makes music fans’ hearts race more than tickets to see their favorite musicians perform. Your loved one probably has a favorite artist or someone he or she has long desired to see live. Look into that performer’s tour dates to see if they are playing your area anytime soon. If they’re playing just before the holiday season, don’t hesitate to give this gift a little early. The same approach should be taken if an artist will be in town within a day or two of Christmas or Chanukah. Giving the tickets early enables your loved one the chance to clear his or her schedule.

Musical instrument It’s never too early or too late to learn how to play a new instrument. Shoppers whose loved ones love a good rock-and-roll riff might find guitars make a great holiday gift, while those who can’t stop playing air drums should enjoy finding a real drum set come the holidays. When buying guitars, shoppers should learn which hand their loved ones favor.
Music lessons Lessons are the next logical step once a music fan has the instruments to work with. But even those without an instrument of their own can benefit from music lessons. For example, music lovers who want to learn piano can make use of lessons even if they don’t have their own pianos at home. Lessons can be a great way for music lovers to gauge their skill levels before buying an expensive instrument. In addition, lessons can turn music lovers on to new instruments or new types of music they may never have considered previously.
Sound system Advancements in technology have proven to be music to music lovers’ ears. Music fans can now take advantage of crisp sound systems that make music that much more enjoyable. Sound systems come in many shapes and sizes, and they can vary significantly in regard to price. When purchasing a sound system as a holiday gift, look for one that’s compatible with your loved one’s existing components, such as a television or music player.
Streaming service membership Unlike the days when music fans had to wait for local deejays to play their favorite songs on the radio, today’s music fans can essentially create their own radio stations on their computers and even on their phones. Shoppers can buy their favorite music fans subscriptions to streaming services, such as Pandora or Spotify, and listeners can then tailor their own stations to include their favorite genres, artists or individual songs.

Tips for gift giving success this holiday This time of year, there is no shortage of holiday gift guides available to help you find the perfect gifts for your loved ones. Whether it’s your chocolate-loving aunt or fashion-forward sister, there is an art to selecting just the right things to put smiles on their faces. Here are a few tips to get you through the overwhelming gift giving process this holiday season:
Developing your list When you create your holiday shopping list this year, include your close friends and family - but don’t forget others who may impact your day-to-day life. Whether it’s your local mail carrier or your children’s school teachers, be sure to show the people who really make a difference in your life gratitude this holiday season - they’ll appreciate your acknowledgment of the impact they have on you.
Deciding on gifts With so many people and preferences to consider, it’s great to have one place you can go, like See’s Candies, to purchase delicious gifts with just the right level of customization for each person on your list. The candy retailer’s Holiday Gift Centers will be in major malls across the country this holiday season, featuring candies using the finest, freshest ingredients. With delectable boxed chocolates and holiday assortments at varying price points, See’s can help you find something for everyone in your life.
Don’t forget the host Once you complete your holiday shopping and check off everyone on your list, you’re not out of the woods just yet. You may be hosting a holiday get together or, better yet, heading to a loved one’s home to celebrate. If someone else is hosting this year, be sure not to show up empty-handed. Ask the host if you can bring an appetizer or dessert and grab an extra box of See’s Candies that will positively be the perfect after-dinner treat. You can also consider bringing the sweet treats as a thank-you gift for the host and their family.
Remember to enjoy it While you’re running around decorating, purchasing gifts, and attending holiday parties, be sure to take a moment to really enjoy the time with your friends and family and remember that quality time is what makes the holidays special. While people look forward to the holidays and time off, they can often be busy and stressful. Make sure you stay in the moment and don’t miss out on the holiday fun.

Season Of Giving By ELIZABETH HARMON
In this season of giving, your time or monetary donation can make a difference, in DuPage County and beyond. A variety of charitable endeavors are underway, looking for volunteers of groups and individuals, and donations of time, food, or funding. Feed My Starving Children, Aurora The faith-based hunger relief organization provides specially formulated nutritionally balanced meals, served in schools, orphanages, and feeding centers to starving children around the world. “Our goal is to eliminate hunger and instill compassion for God’s starving children,” says Denise Gallina, Developmental Advisor. Volunteers work in pre-scheduled shifts to help pack the meals. It’s a great opportunity for families, Scout troops, school, workplace or church groups, sports teams, and more. “Whether you’re four or 104, you can work side by side here. One thing I love to see is three or four generations of a family working together,” says Gallina. Mobile packing events can be scheduled for very large groups. FMSC’s marketplace raises funds by selling great gifts, including jewelry, accessories, mugs and more, all made by artisans in the needy communities worldwide which the organization serves. December special hours include 1 to 3 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 15; from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Christmas Eve, and from 7 to 9 p.m. and from 10 p.m. to midnight New Years Eve. Visit www.fmsc.org to schedule a packing session, donate or learn more. United Way of Central Kane County With a goal of helping Kane County residents become self-sufficient, the United Way of Central Kane County, raises funds and monitors 26 not-for-profits and 35 programs, serving residents of St. Charles, Campton Hills, Geneva, Elburn, LaFox, Kaneville and Wasco.

“Ninety-four percent of the money raised stays in the community,” said Paula Yensen, Executive Director. Last year United Way helped 13,500 Kane County residents. The agency is in the midst of its annual campaign with a goal to raise $450,000. “We’re in an era where many donors are now recipients, due to the Great Recession. It’s even more important now to make a gift and make a difference,” Yensen said. To learn more or make donations, visit www. unitedwayofcentralkanecounty.org Northern Illinois Food Bank Serving some 13 counties in Northern Illinois, the organization provides food for 800 feeding organizations, that include after school programs, senior programs, shelters and mobile food pantries. “In our service area, 425,000 people face hunger every day, and one in five are children,” says Donna Lake, Communications Director. “Our two mobile pantries made 408 visits this year and served about 300 families each time,” says Lake. Donate $15 to the Food Bank’s Backpack program, to provide a hungry child with a weekend’s worth of nutritious food.
EXPERIENCE
A $30 donation to Food Bank’s Holiday Meal Box program provides a family of eight with everything they need for a traditional holiday dinner, including turkey and sides. Other programs assist seniors, low income families and more. The Food Bank’s Geneva office welcomes volunteers to assist with food sorting, packing, clerical help and other tasks. Volunteer or donate by visiting www.solvehungertoday.org. Toys for Tots/Kane County The Marine-sponsored program provides holiday gifts to children in need, and helped 3,000 Kane County families last year, said Chief Warrant Officer 3 Patrick Kackert, local coordinator for Kane County. Toys for Tots partners with local groups, including the Two Rivers Head Start, and the Salvation Army, to distribute new toys donated though drop-boxes from October through early December. Cash donations helps purchase toys where donations run short. “It varies from year to year, but it often seems to be short for the ten to sixteen year age group,” Kackert sad. Visit batavia-il.toysfortots.org for the most up-to-date list of drop box locations, or mail a check payable to Toys for Tots to Toys for Tots, 129 Flinn Street, Batavia, IL 60510

oliday shoppers spend billions of dollars each year on gifts for friends, family and coworkers. But holiday shoppers also spend substantial amounts of money dressing up those gifts with bows and wrapping paper. Shoppers may not want to spend much more on wrapping paper, bags and other ways to dress-up their gifts, and by employing a few tricks of the gift wrapping trade, they may not have to. The following are some frugal, yet flashy, ways to wrap presents this holiday season.

Children’s artwork Over the course of a school year parents can accumulate dozens of original pieces of art from their children’s time in the classroom. Instead of relegating those pictures to a memory box or temporary glory on the refrigerator, turn them into unique gift wrap. Pair these pieces of art with colored ribbon, and everyone who gets a unique masterpiece will feel special.
Newspaper Recycle newsprint and comics into wrapping paper. Encourage everyone to wrap in newspaper for a cohesive look come Christmas morning.
Brown paper Brown paper tied with twine or ribbon is inexpensive and can easily be recycled after use. Use a marker to put the names of gift recipients on each package to save on gift tags as well.
Baby linens
Fabric gift bags If you’re handy with a needle and thread, sew sacks out of leftover fabric to make gift bags of various sizes.
Cookie tins
Cloth Leftover cloth from Halloween or cloth purchased to create homemade curtains can be turned into giftwrap for awkward-shaped gifts. Use decorative ribbon to seal the bundle shut.
Glass jars Use mason jars when wrapping smaller gifts, including gift cards, to give them an artsand-crafts feel.
Find unique cookie tins from yard sales or leftover tins from holidays past and use them as gift boxes.
From blankets to wash cloths, use baby linens to wrap infant-themed gifts for new parents.
Baskets
Recipes
Wicker baskets are available in various shapes and sizes. They can be used to make a gift collection and then reused over and over again.
If you will be giving a cookbook or foodthemed gifts, print recipes that can be used as gift wrap and then later used to make certain dishes.
There are many creative and inexpensive ways to wrap gifts this year instead of relying on preprinted and often expensive wrapping paper.

Find the perfect gift for your guy
G
uys can be the hardest people to shop for, and finding the perfect gift has become a daunting holiday tradition. Sure, they will appreciate the thought behind another bundle of tube socks and might even wear them - but there are gifts that bring a wow factor and make even the most stoic guys light up like a little kid.
Add to a collection Adding to a guy’s collection is a great gift idea. If you’re unsure about what to choose, ask him what he collects and what he needs to take it to the next level. He will be flattered you’re showing interest and you’ll gain valuable insight into that perfect gift.
Give tools for do-it-yourself projects You may not know every project the DIYer in your life is working on, so choose a multi-purpose tool. Tools like the Klutch Cordless Impact Wrench from Northern Tool + Equipment are the perfect partner for all those auto, construction or equipment maintenance projects. This 24volt, cordless wrench delivers heavy torque and includes four different sockets assuring he has the right piece for any job.
Fill his garage or man cave Every guy has a little space in the home he likes to call his own. For some it’s the garage, for others it’s the man cave in the house, and for others maybe the garage is his man cave. Wherever he chooses to relax, he might enjoy a personalized beer pitcher or an under-the-counter fridge. His garage will also look great with a new toolbox or shop stool.
Find the unexpected Finding a gift he might get from a buddy will be a pleasant surprise for him. The Harley-Davidson 7-Liter Pilsner Glass from Kotula’s will turn heads and create a lot of laughs. This giant beer glass can hold up to about 18 cans of his favorite beer and will make a big statement. If you use these shopping tips for the guys in your life, you won’t even need to check your holiday list twice. With a good plan in mind, you’ll find options he will enjoy and actually use.
