On the wall are more than a dozen pennant flags from various colleges — Illinois State, Texas Christian — from where his young customers went off to school. “I hope to get enough to get where I can get every square inch covered, where I don’t have to paint,” he said with a chuckle. DOWNERS GROVE — It’s not just the flags that say “America” at Tony’s Barber Shop. It’s the easy familiarity with customers and the smell of talc that lingers after you leave — barber shops like this might exist in every small town, but they don’t open overnight. It takes years to craft. But, of course, the two star-spangled banners hung just outside the door don’t hurt. On Monday, Alberti was recognized by the local chapter of the Sons of the American Republic — on Presidents Day — for prominent display of the flag at his business and his home. The presentation was scheduled for the one day of the week Alberti’s shop is closed. The SAR Chapter president, Rod Herbig of Lisle, will dress in full colonial military uniform to present the certificate. But for Alberti, the flags are a way to recognize his adopted country. “I love this country, it’s my way of showing appreciation,” he said. Alberti was born in Sicily in 1944. He came to the United States when he was 11 and became a citizen within five years, he said. His family settled in Chicago’s southwest side in what today would be the

DOWNERS GROVE — In redesigning the Downers Grove Public Library, officials are going with experience. Last week, library officials announced three finalists for a planned $1.8 million renovation of the building slated for later this year. All three architecture firms work largely, if not exclusively, in library design. Designers from each of the firms said last week that past work does not affect the final design as much as what the individual building — as well as the staff and library patrons — requires. “You have to be specific with each library; you can’t go in and think you can solve it in a day,” said Dan Pohrte,

with library digitalization. Right now, it’s more than more computers. E-books are becoming a larger part of libraries, and the Downers Grove Public Library also loans out tablet devices like iPads. Of course, technology’s exponential growth rate means that today’s devices and applications could be obsolete even sooner. That’s why there must be a focus on flexibility, said Michael Mackey, designer and project leader at Dewberry in Elgin. “Our mantra now may be, ‘more plugged in, less built in,’” Mackey said. “We try to keep things as flexible as possible understanding there’s going to be a change.” Although nothing is on paper at this point, the architects are coming in with

with Engberg Anderson in Milwaukee, also highlighted the sense of space — making the building as welcoming and inviting as possible. “I think the trickiest parts are going to be the entries,” especially the north entrance from the parking lot, he said. “But it’s not insurmountable, in fact, it’s a fairly common thing libraries have to grapple with. Other than that, it’s a big building with lots of room.” For his interview last weekend, however, he hoped to also bring a focus on the smaller scale. He was joined by two colleagues, including an interior designer. “In essence, it’s going to be a lot of furniture: shelving; computer tables; computers themselves,” he said. “It’s that minor scale of detail.”

some ideas in mind. Last month, Ashton led several dozen of them on a tour of the building’s features. While the architects interviewed last week said there were some strong features in the building — large open spaces, a lot of natural light on the second floor —they highlighted some potential improvements. Pohrte said he would like to address the flow of the building. Traveling from one section to another requires a trip through the main lobby, which can become congested. He’d also like to establish a different environment in each section, so the children’s room is distinct from the teen area, which is distinct from the reference section, he said. partner at one of the finalists, Product Architecture + Design based in Chicago. The firms each interviewed for the job on Saturday, and officials plan to make a decision by the end of the month. The renovation is slated to run from this fall through mid-2014. The details of the renovation itself, however, are largely undecided at this point, but Library Director Rick Ashton has said he wants to address the main lobby, including the checkout area, as well as adapt to new technology — both for patrons as well as behind the scenes to make circulation more efficient. Addressing new technology is a common focus, the architects said. Even buildings built in the last 25 years are finding it hard to keep up

Q
A with the Hearing Doctor
Q: I like to clean my ears every day with a Q-tip. I heard that you’re not supposed to use Q-tips to clean your ears out. What’s the best way to get the wax out of my ears? A: he presence of cerumen (ear wax) in the ear canal is normal. Your ear naturally Dr. Terri Lightbody produces (630) 580-5777 cerumen as a lubricant to help ight bacteria. An Occluded (blocked) ear canal can cause a hearing loss. Normally, cerumen migrates out of the ear canal by itself. However, there are several reasons why cerumen can become impacted (accumulate) in the ear canal. 1) Use of ear cleaning tools such as Q-tips. he cerumen can be pushed further into the ear canal. 2) Use of hearing aids and ear protection plugs or ear monitors can trap cerumen in the canal. 3) Narrowing of the ear canal. As adults age, the ear canal tends to get narrower or collapse (sags), trapping cerumen in the canal.
Ear specialists use the age-old adage “Don’t put anything smaller than your elbow in your ear.” We still preach this today. We recommend that you do not try to clean your ears with Q-tips, ear candling, ear washes or oils. hese procedures can cause more harm than good. Accidental cuts or scratches from these items can lead to painful ear infections. Cerumen is oten attached to the skin in the ear canal and when it is removed forcefully, it can tear of a piece of skin, causing bleeding and possibly, an ear infection. If you take bloodthinner prescription medicines, daily aspirin or ish oil pills, you need to be extra cautious. One of the best ways to have excessive ear wax removed is by a Doctor of Audiology. I use a microscope with forceps to gently remove ear wax. In most cases, I don’t recommend having your ears “lushed” out with water because this can cause the cerumen to expand and block the ear canal or even force the cerumen down against the tympanic membrane. If this happens, it can cause pressure and pain.

Harlem Wizards veteran David Paul, known by his nickname, “DP,” keeps students alert Thursday as he prepares to pass the ball to one of them during an assembly at Kingsley School in Downers Grove. The Wizards will play a charity game against teachers Sunday at Downers Grove South High School.
Smooth moves Harlem Wizards bring basketball wizardry to Downers Grove students By BRIAN HUDSON bhudson@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE — Downers Grove elementary students were treated to some smooth basketball play last week. In gearing up for a face-off with student faculty Sunday, the Harlem Wizards paid a visit to student assemblies at Kingsley, El Sierra and Henry Puffer Elementary schools on Thursday. On Sunday, the Wizards faced a squad of Downers Grove School District 58 faculty, staff and community members — including Superintendent Kari Cremascoli and Mayor Martin
Tully — in a charity game. The Wizards team — featuring athleticism, tricks and “ball-handling wizardry” — is often compared to the Harlem Globetrotters, but Wizards President Todd Davis maintains his team puts on the better show. “While the Globetrotters are quite well known and many consider them synonymous with show basketball,” the Wizards website quotes him, “they do not deliver the kind of connection, feeling, fun, community and excitement that the Wizards do.” The game raised money for the District 58 Education Foundation.

DOWNERS GROVE — Downers Grove police Friday said a suspicious incident that involved a man approaching a 13-year-old boy Feb. 11 was nothing more than a misunderstanding. Police said the man was actually lost and looking for directions to traffic court, which is in the vicinity of where the incident occurred, near 40th Street and Saratoga Avenue. “During the investigation, officers received information from a citizen that a person matching the subject’s description was in the area asking for directions to traffic court,” a release sent Friday stated. The man also spoke broken English, which police say contributed to the misunderstanding. Police said the 13-year-old boy ran off after he was approached by a “suspicious man” who offered him a ride Feb. 11. The boy immediately fled on foot and reported it to police. The Downers Grove Police Department would like to thank the community for their assistance in resolving this matter and asks everyone to remind children to be aware of strangers and report any concerns immediately to police.

they do?
A: The main job of the salivary glands is to produce the saliva that lubricates the mouth. Saliva is mostly water, but also includes mucous, electrolytes and other substances. Enzymes in saliva help with the beginning of the food digestion process, particularly starches. Saliva also protects your teeth from decay. In conjunction with your tongue, saliva allows you to wash away the little food fragments that might remain in your mouth after eating. There are three pairs of major salivary glands – the parotids, which are in your cheeks and are the largest; the sublingual, which are under your tongue, and the submandibular, which are under your jaw. Your lips and cheeks also have numerous minor glands that contribute to what normally is a constant, small flow of saliva. The presence of food – sometimes even the anticipation of it – can trigger an excessive amount of saliva. Hence, the phrase “mouthwatering” to describe a dish. We use saliva to shape food we eat into a ball, called a bolus, for swallowing. We would not be able to taste food were it not for saliva because our taste buds react only to moist food. Drinking adequate amounts of water is a good way to keep your salivary glands healthy. Dehydration can lead to problems with them. Talk with your dentist about other ways to keep your mouth healthy.

District 58 moves forward on Pierce Downer School expansion By BRIAN HUDSON bhudson@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE — Pierce Downer Elementary School is, by one measure, the most crowded of all Downers Grove School District 58 schools, but that could change by the fall. Last week, school board officials opened the door for bids from construction firms, the next step in a planned threeclassroom expansion at the school, 1346 Grant St. The $1.2 million renovation would be paid for from existing funds and is slated to be

finished in early September. The project calls for adding classroom space onto the northwest wing of the building. Pierce Downer would gain not only classrooms but also a dedicated art and music room — it’s the only school in the district not to already have that. The school would also gain space for small-group instruction such as special education classes, for instance, or reading labs. Most schools have six or seven spaces, according to district officials. Pierce Downers currently has four. The project was spurred in
part by a districtwide assessment last year of all facilities. The study helped officials identify close to $40 million in spending priorities, and near the top of the list was overcrowding at Pierce Downer. It lags every other school in the district in both classroom area per student — 38 square feet, compared to an average of 47 — as well as in total square foot per student, according to the study. Only Belle Aire School is smaller in terms of total building area, but it has a smaller student population. Pierce Downer’s capacity is estimat-
ed at 375, but its enrollment this year is 419. “The overcrowding issue at Pierce Downer has been a longstanding one,” Superintendent Kara Cremascoli said in a phone interview last week. Last school year, Pierce Downer’s fifth grade posted the largest average classroom size in the district at 28.5. This year, there is a population bubble at second and third grade — in one general instruction class, those classes are combined — and that will continue as the students progress. Initially, district officials

looked at addressing overcrowding at Lester Elementary School — the next most crowded school in District 58. Lester offers 41 square feet per student, and last year’s study said both Lester and Pierce Downer were experiencing “severe space pressures.” But student population at Lester has been decreasing in the last couple years, and district officials believe that trend will continue. “It was determined overcrowding there at Lester wasn’t quite as significant at this point,” Cremascoli said.

Boy Scout Troop 80 Boy Scout Troop 80, named after Alexander Bradley Burns, was sponsored by the Downers Grove American Legion Post. Alexander Bradley Burns was a 1916 graduate of Downers Grove Community High School, where he held the distinction of going from first grade through his senior year without missing a day of school. Alexander Burns enlisted in the U.S. Army in April 1917, training at Fort Sheridan and with Battery C of the First Illinois Artillery. He was the first boy from DuPage County to be killed in action during World War I, dying from wounds he received in battle on March 16, 1918.

Village to detail stormwater fee cost breaks in seminar SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA DOWNERS GROVE — This week, village officials will offer an educational session for residents on Downers Grove’s new stormwater utility — and some of the incentives available to cut down on costs. The seminar will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Lincoln Center, 935 Maple Ave. Village Manager David Fieldman previewed the session at Tuesday’s Village Council meeting. With the stormwater fund that was introduced this year, Downers Grove will now be paying for stormwater sewer projects with a village-wide fee, rather than with the property tax revenue that was used in the past. Fees are cal-
culated based on the amount of impervious area — such as the roof, driveway or patio — on a given lot. But property owners can reduce their monthly stormwater fee through incentives. The village will offer credits for installing rain barrels or other conservation tools. At Thursday’s presentation, village staff and Jim Kleinwachter of the Conservation Foundation will provide an educational presentation to residents on the benefits of water conservation and stormwater management. They will also offer information for residents interested in pursuing the incentives such as rain barrels, rain gardens or permeable pavers.

Irritable Bowel, Celiac, Crohn’s or Colitis? Are you afraid to leave your house due to an unpredictable bowel? Have you tried diferent treatments but continue to sufer? Do you know the essentials for a healthy digestive system? Have you given up and decided to just live with it? he digestive system assimilates food (carbs, fats and proteins) to produce energy. It breaks down food into nutrient forms that your body can absorb. It uses enzymes, good bacteria and hydrochloric acid to break down food to a usable form. Your gut is a barrier, a tube that starts in your mouth, continues as your esophagus, small intestine, large intestine and rectum. 80% of your immune system is in your gut. When you break down the barrier (gut lining), toxins can “leak” into the blood stream leading to an immune response, inlammation and food allergies. Hippocrates, the father of medicine said… “look to the gut, there will you ind the origin of almost all human illness.”
Hi, my name is Dr. Jefrey E. Forzley with Lemont Natural Healthcare. I am a chiropractic physician and a holistic practitioner. I am passionate about helping people with chronic health conditions. I have been in practice for 28 years. As a holistic practitioner I evaluate the nervous system, immune system, endocrine system (hormones), diet essentials (Neuro-‐Metabolic Care), manage the underlying cause and use natural therapies to manage digestive disorders. here are many essentials required for proper digestion. Let’s talk about a few… Zinc is necessary to make hydrochloric acid (HCL). HCL is needed to break down food (protein) in the stomach and for production of methyl groups. Methyl groups turn on tumor suppressor genes and turn of oncogenes leading to potential cancer growth. If HCL is deicient, this results in poor digestion and a many imbalances due to a deiciency of methyl groups. HCL deiciency also leads to growth of pathological bacteria like H. Pylori, which can cause gastritis, stomach ulcers and possibly stomach cancer. Probiotics (good bacteria) are normally found in the gut. Optimal levels are needed for a proper functioning digestive system. hese probiotics are also part of your immune

system. hey play an important role in the protective barrier in your gut. Your gut makes up 80% of your immune system due to this barrier system. Antibiotics kill pathologic bacteria and infections but they also kill good bacteria and cause gut dysbiosis (imbalance). his dysbiosis can lead to pathologic bacterial, yeast and parasitic infections as well as food allergies. Digestive system inlammation is associated with IBS, Crohn’s, Celiac and Ulcerative Colitis. It is due to stress, poor diet, toxins and food allergies. Digestive inlammation leads to production of cytokines (inlammatory cells). hese cytokines travel in the blood to the brain and inlame the brain cells. he brain (mesencephalon) in turn controls the digestive system. his leads to a vicious cycle resulting in an inlammatory cascade which exponentially worsens over time. Successfully managing digestive conditions involves balancing the nervous system, digestive system and immune system as well as improving the diet, decreasing gut inlammation and detoxifying the body. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a digestive disorder that includes abdominal pain, discomfort, bloating and alternating constipation and diarrhea. he cause is unknown but theories include toxic overload, intestinal infections, inlammation from stress and poor diet generalized condition of the digestive system poor signaling from the brain to the digestive system for proper function.
Medications to treat digestive disorders can weaken your immune system and lead to infections and immune degenerative conditions including cancer. hese medications may give you symptom relief but have side efects and DO NOT ADDRESS the UNDERLYING CAUSE of your condition.
Testimonial As someone who lives with chronic nausea, poor digestion and anxiety, I assumed I was out of options when countless doctors told me that there was nothing else they could do for me. hey told me it was likely all in my head. hen I visited Dr. Forzley and he told me from the initial consultation that he was very conident he could help me. I was so excited that I cried. No other doctor has ever been so much on my side. Now, 8 weeks into treatment, I am nausea free, anxiety free and my digestion is normal. I have started living a life I never thought I could live. My body is a machine, slowed and dirtied by processed foods and environmental toxins. But with the help of Dr. Forzley, my body is on the way back to an optimal state for long term health and happiness. Veronica M.
Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity is a digestive condition that involves gluten sensitivity like Celiac Disease but is not an autoimmune disorder. It involves digestive symptoms (pain, bloating…), fatigue, joint pains as well as neurologic symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, poor memory, brain fog and diiculty concentrating. Celiac Disease, Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis are autoimmune diseases. An autoimmune disorder is when your immune system attacks your body instead of protecting it. here is NO CURE for autoimmune disorders. But you can calm down the immune response NATURALLY and decrease the efects of the tissue destruction. If you have an autoimmune disease like Celiac, Crohn’s or Ulcerative Colitis and you do not balance and calm down the autoimmune destruction, your immune system can attack other tissues and cause multiple autoimmune disorders. It is common for people with an autoimmune disorder to have multiple autoimmune diseases for this reason. Medications are not always the long term answer.
Holistic therapy can manage digestive conditions by: 1) inding and balancing the underlying cause and… 2) using natural therapies that work with your body.

RFID tags help track library material Thanks to a unique community partnership, the letters “RFID” have become familiar around the Downers Grove Public Library in recent months. They stand for “radio frequency identification,” and they represent the next chapter of development in the library’s provision of fast, accurate, flexible service. RFID is a step beyond the familiar bar code technology used to keep track of a 300,000-item inventory and a 30,000-person customer base. By placing an RFID target tag in every item in the library’s collection, we will improve the ability of our customers and staff members to identify, locate, check out, check in and reshelve books and other materials. When used with self-checkout scanning stations and automatic sorting equipment, RFID will improve all involved processes. RFID tagging began last summer after the purchase of a large supply of tags and the leasing of the equipment needed to activate them. We had no funding for additional staff time or temporary workers to perform the job. Some staff members were able to reallocate a portion of their work week to the task, but the project would have dragged on indefinitely at our pace. This is where a most valuable resource, the corps

A new stormwater fee has resulted in First United Methodist Church in Downers Grove paying about $200 a month, totaling about $2,400 a year, to the village.
Last month, three pastors expressed concerns to the Downers Grove Village Council about the village’s new stormwater fee, which charges churches for stormwater projects that were previously paid for by property tax — from which they were exempt. The total impact of the new fee, however, affects some 37 nonprofit entities. Most single-family parcels will pay between $6.30 and $12.60 a month, while nonprofit groups will pay $8.40 for every 3,300 square feet of impervious area. This can get quite expensive for these groups, and the village should devise a more equitable way of levying this expense. Downers Grove officials will welcome Advocate Health Care — and its roughly 600 jobs — to the village this spring. The medical
To the Editor: After reading the letter to the editor, “Immigration reform is all about votes and power” (Downers Grove Reporter, Feb. 6), it was difficult to determine if Ms. Bentley dislikes immigrants or the president more. The idea to grant citizenship and then restrict these citizens from voting is not a new or unique idea. During the post Civil War and precivil rights era, a number of states enacted ways to deny African-American citizens from voting by requiring property ownership, poll taxes, literary tests, etc. Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, guaranteeing all citizens equal protection of the laws under the 14th Amendment and to protect voting rights under the 15th Amendment. The Civil Rights Act corrected long-standing injustices. We should not now propose to reinstate those injustices to any group of people. Jim Speta Downers Grove

Have you put off doing your kitchen long enough? Is this the year you have vowed to do something with your cabinets? Have the horror stories of kitchen remodeling made you afraid to even think about it? With prices approaching and surpassing $100,000 for full kitchen remodeling, it is no wonder the Average Joe and Jane feel a little overwhelmed. Enter Kitchen Tune-Up! This locally owned (Downers Grove) National Franchise has been offering minor kitchen remodels for 19 years. Marty Ceranec, the owner, has won numerous awards from KTU for Sales, Customer Service, and Creativity. He received the highest award in 2000 when he won National Franchise of the Year and in addition, is a two time Angies List Super Service Award Winner. We offer Kitchen Solutions for Any Budget. “I think some people get sticker shock when they look at the price of redoing an entire kitchen and are overwhelmed. We work with clients every day who have the same anxieties,” says Marty. KTU can provide anything from the Signature Kitchen Tune-Up to a full blown design and remodel. “The bulk of our work last year was in refacing and door replacement. Door replacement doesn’t change the color, but replaces old particle board doors with new solid raised panel doors utilizing concealed hinges. Refacing, on the other hand, enables one to change their oak cabinets to maple cabinets without buying all new cabinetry,” said Marty. “These two options also save landfill space because we are saving the boxes.” Why have they been so successful? “I think it’s because we follow our trust points (below). Simple things like showing up on time and returning phone calls which is often lacking in the remodeling industry. I have chosen to keep the business small so I am involved in every job with my three long time installers. By doing this we have become well known as experts in minor kitchen remodeling.” Kitchen Tune-Up also offers cabinetry upgrades such as glass doors, tipout trays, soft-closing dovetail drawers, and full extension rollouts as well as counters in laminate, solid surfaces, granite and quartz (Cambria) “The Best Counter Top Around.” When questioned about any regrets, Marty replies, “We often get calls to update the kitchen when the owner is ready. We always wonder why they didn’t do it earlier so they could have enjoyed it sooner.”

Their contribution will not be marked by a bronze plaque, but it will be engraved upon the hearts and minds of everyone at the Downers Grove Public Library. The new equipment will be installed soon, and the RFID era will begin.

DOWNERS GROVE — Officials at Good Samaritan Hospital are touting the “quick thinking” of staff at the Health and Wellness Center that saved the life of a man last month. Mike Imbrogno was just finishing his regular workout at the center “when he suddenly felt dizzy — like he was going to faint,” the hospital reported last week. He collapsed at the bottom of a staircase, and several Wellness Center associates rushed

Jeff Roe, a personal trainer, began CPR; Danielle Greene, a former Good Samaritan nurse who was working out at the center, and Steve Belano, a personal trainer, handled chest compressions. Two fitness specialists, Lana Kapela and Jen Heggaton, grabbed a defibrillator and attached it to Imbrogno’s chest. He was transported to the hospital on the same campus, where he was treated for a sudden cardiac arrest. Imbrogno, the director of information systems at Advocate, is resting at home in Downers Grove. “If this had happened 30 minutes later, or at any other place or time, I would not be alive today,” Imbrogno said in the press release. “The Wellness Center staff literally gave me my life back. I cannot find words to express my gratitude.” A similar incident occurred in October, when a man suffered a cardiac arrest during his workout in October. He survived after a quadruple bypass surgery.

DOWNERS GROVE — Former members of the Downers Grove Jaycees group are invited to attend a March 2 dedication ceremony of a plaque in commemoration of the old warming shelter the Jaycees constructed at Patriots Park. The warming shelter, donated and constructed in 1968 by the now defunct Downers Grove Jaycees service organization, had to be removed several years ago during renovations of Patriots Park. The dedication ceremony is scheduled for noon Saturday, March 2 at the park. The warming shelter was a donation to the community and was constructed by Jaycees members in 1967 and 1968. All former Jaycees and the community are invited to attend the ceremony. Jaycees planning to attend are asked to contact Bruce Swanson at 630-976-2514 to confirm their attendance.
Health and Wellness Center, 3551 Highland Ave. A panel discussion will follow featuring David Dungan, an internal medicine specialist who treats patients at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital; Nancy Moran, a registered dietician at Good Samaritan Hospital; and Steve Belano, a personal trainer at the wellness center, are scheduled to participate in the panel. The screening is part of a series in the village in February and March. Each of the events includes a viewing of the edited series, a discussion about how community leaders and families can help diminish this national problem at the local level and a question and answer session with an expert panel. WDSRA aims to educate public, provide support for special needs individuals By JENNY CASALE msleditorial@shawmedia.com The Western DuPage Special Recreation Association (WDSRA) has been providing fun and recreational opportunities to people of all ages and disabilities since 1976. Programming begins at birth through three years old with family play groups and continues for older children, teens and seniors. “There is a program for every age and every interest,” said Sherry Manschot, marketing and public relations manager. Tammy Kerrins, WDSRA inclusion manager, can share several touching success stories of the special needs children, teens, and adults this organization serves. She recalled one story in particular. “I’ll never forget a number of years ago when a mom called me in tears, telling me that her little boy, who was participating in a park district preschool program, got his first invite to a birthday party,” said Kerrins. Not surprising, life events most take for granted is reason for parents and WDSRA to celebrate. WDSRA’s vision of “equal fun for everyone” allows the organization to offer the same opportunities in life as everyone else by providing fun and recreational outlets for all ages. This allows opportunities to learn and grow over a lifetime. Manschot noted that recreation provides a crucial component to the growth and development of anyone with a special need. Through play, individuals learn the life skills that will carry over into every aspect of daily life. Think of a young adult who may never have had the opportunity to spend a night away from his parents because of his particular needs, Manschot said. With WDSRA he may be able to take a weekend trip with his peers for the very first time, because capable staff knows how to care for him during his time away from home. “(Those with special needs)

Through this traveling educational program, participants experience being confined to a wheelchair, having impaired vision, hearing and sensory issues or other disabilities. “It creates a sense of empathy and awareness,” said Kerrins of the education program. WDSRA provides inclusion services at no charge to individuals who require assistance and support to participate in any member park district program. Program fees vary by program with some offered at no cost. WDSRA, located at 116 N. Schmale Road, Carol Stream, serves nine area towns including Bloomingdale, Carol Stream, Glen Ellyn, Naperville, Roselle, Warrenville, West Chicago, Wheaton and Winfield. The organization has several satellite locations. Families may contact WDSRA directly at 630-681-0962 or sign-up through their home park district for inclusion services or visit the website, www.wdsra.com.

rian sauce, noting you won’t find it in a Chinese restaurant. It’s one of the signature flavors at Taste. A fan is Tanya Schmidt of Downers Grove, who enjoys dining there with husband Carl, or ordering carryout. “They make the best soup in the universe — the Manchow soup,” she says, noting she traveled frequently to China on business before becoming a teacher. “It beats anything I’ve had there.” She says she’s hooked on the General Tsao’s chicken, while her husband recommends the shredded lamb with hot garlic sauce.
She praises the delicate spring rolls, and the wide choice in vegetarian dishes. “With all the corporate restaurants, it’s so lovely to have a small, privately owned restaurant that makes wonderful food,” she says. “You get very personal service, and they care about whether you like what you’ve eaten there.” Having lunch with her family recently was Anu Mathur of Burr Ridge. “Everything is tasty,” she said as they shared dishes, noting friends recommended they try Taste. “We’ll be back. They do a good job catering to what you want. (For example, making it the) medium spicy I requested.” Indian ice cream is made in house. Available in pistachio or mango flavors, a petite portion adds a sweet finish to the meal.

At first blush, the menu offerings look like classic Chinese, but restaurateur Trevor Pereira has gone fusion at Taste Indian Chinese Cuisine. He explains that the combination is a popular trend in India, where Chinese immigrants attuned their culinary skills to suit the tastes of the local population. The spices of India infuse the dishes at Pereira’s restaurant inside the Meadowbrook Shopping Center on 63rd Street in Downers Grove, just east of Belmont Road (Finley). The eatery is tucked along the side of a courtyard in the western half of the mall. Inside the space, he has created an appealing dining room, where hanging lamps are turned low in the evening and add to the warm ambiance. While beer and wine are available, one of the favorite beverages is the mango lassi, a creamy concoction of mango in a yogurt base, colorfully presented in a cocktail glass. He says the drink is an Indian favorite. Pereira’s background includes working with the luxurious Taj Hotels group in India, and helping launch Indian restaurants in the Chicago area. Taste is the first establishment of his own. “This is my dream,” he says. “I wanted to have a restaurant where I could serve people quality food for a very good price.” He says the chefs are happy to accommodate special requests and cater to the American palate, adding, “Since we make everything fresh, we can make (dishes) mild to medium to spicy.” Taste offers vegetarian dishes, in addition to chicken, seafood, beef and lamb, as well as gluten-free options. No pork is served, and no peanut oil is used, only vegetable. He suggests trying the Manchu-

What made you want to start a film society in the suburbs? I’ve always loved foreign and art films. In the 1980s, I used to drive down to the Music Box (in Chicago) every Friday or Saturday. I’d be fighting traffic, paying for parking, and it became an allday excursion. I kept thinking, ‘I can’t be the only one that wants to do this.’ I called my brother one night, and told him about a small Hinsdale theater that showed foreign films occasionally, and asked if he thought the owners would think I was crazy to volunteer to work the movies and sell tickets to save payroll expenses. He said, ‘Why don’t you form a film society?’ I said, ‘What’s that?’ That was the beginning.

Debbie Venezia founded the After Hours Film Society, whose home is the Tivoli Theatre in Downers Grove.

Do you pick all the films shown? I do, but I also take suggestions and recommendations. I read the New York Times, and I watch (to) see what films are opening here or there, and I compile a list. I do rely heavily on word of mouth and other reviews. There have been one or two
films I’ve been disappointed with, but the rest is kind of an adventure. I don’t even like to read reviews before I see a film — too much of the plot is revealed and it ruins the experience. You don’t know what will happen an hour from now in your own life, and that’s how I like to look at films.

Debbie Venezia of Glen Ellyn received a phone call in 1999 that would change her life — and the future of her After Hours Film Society. The call was from Shirley Johnson, co-owner of the Tivoli Theatre in Downers Grove, inquiring whether Debbie would be interested in transplanting the society to the larger venue. The move was a good one, and Venezia calls it a dream come true. The 1,000-seat Tivoli has ample room for the average 440 guests who come to the movies, and enough to accommodate the majority of the society’s 1,100 members. Meeting each second and fourth Monday, the society features foreign and art films, as well as classics. Upcoming films include “Central Park Five,” “Rust and Bone” and “Royal Affair.” One of the organization’s highlights is the annual student film festival, which is accepting entries until June. As the society’s 25th anniversary approaches, Venezia reflects on how far the group she founded has come.

BOYS HOOPS PLAYOFF PREVIEW
Defense key to Mustangs’ postseason plans By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com
Downers Grove South Class: 4A Sectional seed: No. 13 Regional: Wheaton Warrenville South Regional opener: 6 p.m. Monday vs. No. 20 Yorkville Outlook: Even when it’s winor-go-home time like it is in the playoffs, South head coach Jay Baum still preaches the one-dayat-a-time ethos. He’s also a fan of being prepared for the rigors of the postseason. “We need to take care of ourselves physically and be ready
mentally for whoever our opponent is,” Baum said. The Mustangs don’t know too much about first-round opponent Yorkville. Baum had some tape in hand late last week and planned to scout them in person this Friday in order to formulate a better game plan. “Their record is decent, but they play some smaller schools than what we usually play,” the coach said. “They have some young kids, sophomores and juniors playing. We just hope to play well and then turn around and play West Aurora the next day.” Should the Mustangs top Yorkville, the No. 4 seed Blackhawks would be waiting at 7:30 p.m. Tues-
day. As of Feb. 15, West Aurora was 19-4. South is 13-11 heading into tonight’s season finale at Oak ParkRiver Forest (7:30 p.m.) While Baum didn’t know much about Yorkville, he did know the key to what he hopes is a long postseason run. “When we play well defensively, we’re in every game,” Baum said. “We’ve got different people who can score — Robert Mara and Kevin Hall inside, Jordan Cannon is an outstanding three-point shooter and Scott McNellis has been really solid from the perimeter and inside — but we’ve got to defend or we’ve got no chance. We score just over 50 a game, so we’ve got to hold teams in the 40s.”
Downers Grove North Class: 4A Sectional seed: No. 18 Regional: Benet Regional opener: 6 p.m. Monday vs. No. 15 Plainfield North Outlook: The regional opener will be just the third road game of 2013 for the Trojans, who finish the regular season by hosting Hinsdale South at 6 p.m. tonight. The playoff game will also be just the third game in 13 days for North (10-14), a slow span that allowed head coach Jim Thomas to scout the Tigers. “They’ve got a variety of different players,” Thomas said. “They’re very good in transition, they shoot a lot of threes and they have a big kid inside.”
The Trojans played the Tigers in the playoffs in 2011, with Plainfield North winning 69-65 thanks to a strong finish. Thomas expects another close game, but feels this time his team could pull it out. “I don’t think there’s any question we play in the better conference,” Thomas said, citing West Suburban teams York (No. 2), Oak Park-River Forest (No. 3) and Hinsdale Central (No. 5) that earned top-five sectional seeds. “We’re battle tested. Although we don’t have a lot of wins in conference, we’ve been knocking on the door.” If the Trojans can knock off the Tigers, they would move on to face No. 2 seed Benet at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

DOWNERS GROVE — The playoff runs may have been a little shorter than desired, but there is plenty to look forward to next season for the girls basketball teams from Downers Grove North and Downers Grove South. The Trojans actually topped Addison Trail 67-48 in the playoff opener, avenging a loss to the Blazers in the regular season finale. North then fell to No. 3 Wheaton North 61-39 in a regional semifinal Feb. 12, but the bright spot is it did so with a very young group of players. The gritty play of senior Claire Jagielo and the leadership of fellow seniors like Molly Baldwin, Mary Bedalov and Brittany Nagy will be missed, but several key contributors are slated to return next season. The latter group includes leading scorer Sarah Costello, freshman starters Jaida Green and Lauren Porcelli, and sophomores Izzy Greenblatt and Peyton Winters, who both logged a lot of minutes this season. The Mustangs, who were bounced from the playoffs with a 48-27 loss to host Elk Grove Feb. 12, will see Megan Brashaw, Nicole Janowiak, Brittany Dietz, Jessica Zuidema and Kirsten Zemke depart to graduation, but the cupboard will be far from bare next winter. Claire Hardy, Melissa McLean, Bridget Ruder, Jessica Lamparski and Kaley Smith, who all played plenty this season, will return as seniors. Sophomore Ava Porlier is also on track to return after playing as a reserve, and freshman Stephanie Walthier could be back playing in a much larger role next season.

‘No regrets’ at state for North senior Cummings Anaya bounces back from loss, takes sixth at state By JASON ROSSI

CHAMPAIGN — All season long, Cullen Cummings was in the discussion as a potential wrestling state champion. So when the Downers Grove North senior finished fourth at 138 pounds at last weekend’s Class 3A state tournament, the moment was a little bittersweet. “At the end of the weekend I was kind of disappointed,” Cummings said. “I wasn’t totally disappointed, but I was kind of let down because I went there to win it.” A semifinal loss to Belleville West’s Mech Spraggins, who Cummings had defeated earlier in the season, dashed his title hopes. The defeat happened Friday evening, which meant Cummings had all Friday night to think about the match as he cut weight for Saturday’s weigh-in. “It was kind of weird. Everybody knew that match could have been a state championship match,” Cummings said. “I felt I was ready for it, he just wrestled a better match than me.” Following the semifinal loss, Downers Grove North coach Chris McGrath was in Cummings’ ear telling him

CHAMPAIGN — Alex Anaya narrowly lost his opening match 3-1 at the Class 3A state wrestling tournament. That loss to the eventual runner-up was about the only thing to go wrong for the senior 160-pounder from Downers Grove South. After the initial loss, Anaya went 2-2 in the backdraw to earn an all-state, sixth-place finish in his first state tournament appearance. Anaya won his first two backdraw matches by identical 4-3 scores, and narrowly fell 5-3 in overtime of the fifth-place match Saturday at Assembly Hall in Champaign. Sophomore Joe Nugent (126 pounds) and junior Mike Hobbs (285) also competed at state for the Mustangs. Hobbs won his first match with a fall at the 3:41 mark before falling in his next two bouts, while Nugent lost a pair of matches in his first trip to state.

Nominees needed to possess a minimum 3.50 grade point average on 4.0 scale after their seventh semester, have participated in at least two IHSA sponsored sports or activities during each of the last two years and also demonstrated outstanding citizenship. A committee of IHSA principals, representatives of the Illinois Activities Directors Association (IADA) and representatives of the Illinois Athletic Directors Association (IADA) then evaluated the nominees. The All-State Academic Team members will be honored at a banquet April 15 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Bloomington.
