CHARLES – The grand marshal for the 2013 St. Patrick’s Parade will be the woman responsible for starting the event, the Downtown St. Charles Partnership announced Monday. Rosie Martinez approached the city about organizing a St. Patrick’s Parade in 1999, a year after Maurice McNally invited her to leave Dublin to open McNally’s Traditional Irish Pub in St. Charles. “I wanted to bring a piece of my culture to St. Charles and show how we really do it back home,” Martinez said in a statement. “We wanted to bring a piece of Ireland to St. Charles.” Accordingtothepartnership, Martinez and 15 volunteers established the first parade with the Downtown St. Charles Partnership, the Chamber of Commerce and city cooperation. Martinez now works as a hairdresser for Colour Line Hair Studio in Geneva and is part of the management team at McNally’s Irish Pub. The 2013 St. Patrick’s Parade is set for 2 p.m. March 16 on Main Street from Sixth Street to Fourth Avenue. It will feature bands, Irish dancers, Irish music, floats, school groups and service clubs. The St. Charles Veterinary Clinic will sponsor a Deck Out Your Lucky Dog contest, and decorated dogs will be invited to walk in the parade. The Arcada Theatre, 105 E. City OKs $26K to evaluate church By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – City officials want to know how much it would cost to repair the former First Baptist Church building at the corner of Washington and Wilson streets in downtown Batavia so the building can be reused. The city has owned the facility since 2006, including the late 19th century origi-
nal church, a 1930s north addition and a 1956 classroom wing. City staff recommended hiring Northbrook-based WJE for a $26,000 fixed fee to assess the building’s condition. Batavia aldermen Monday unanimously approved the contract. “We want to have it evaluated as far as its true condition,” 7th Ward Alderman Dave Brown said. Public Works Director
Gary Holm told aldermen that over the past few years, the city has performed routine maintenance to ensure the facility did not fall into a state of disrepair.

Road work worries Downtown Batavia business owners brace for Wilson Street improvements By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Daddio’s Diner owner Scott Beltran doesn’t know what to expect when work begins in June on the Wilson Street streetscape project or how it will affect business at his restaurant at 134 W. Wilson St. He hopes the project doesn’t drag on as long as last year’s North River Street streetscape project, which took about eight months to complete. “I felt sorry for those businesses along North River Street,” Beltran said. “It had to be horrendous for those people to cope. It makes me nervous.” Wilson Street is the next street in downtown Batavia to receive improvements. The project will be done in conjunction with the Wilson Street traffic signal improvements, which have begun. The project is estimated to cost $3.5 million. The project will be partially funded by a $1.5 million Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program, a federally funded competitive grant program that promotes alternative transportation, bike and pedestrian travel and streetscape beautification. The city also received $656,000 in state funds for traffic signals. The four-month project will start in June and should be completed by September or October, City Engineer Noel Basquin said. The project will stretch from Island Avenue to Batavia Avenue (Route 31) along Wilson Street. The streetscape project will include the installation of five or six bump-outs along Wilson Street to reduce the width of roadway that pedestrians have to cross, along with wider sidewalks and brick paver crosswalks at major intersections. “We’re trying to make it into more of a walking area for downtown residents and customers,” Basquin said. Basquin knows the work will cause disruptions, but he said the city is working to minimize it. For example, the

majority of utility work will be done at night. Access to Wilson Street businesses will be maintained during the project, he said. If there must be closures, he said that would be communicated to businesses in advance to lessen disruptions. Gene Olmstead, owner of Olmstead’s TV and Appliances at 221 W. Wilson St., said he feels the downtown business owners have been kept in the dark about the plans.
“It would be nice if they informed people,” Olmstead said. “Nobody has provided a picture of what they want to do or gotten our input.” Olmstead said he is worried that access to the parking spaces in front of his store will be cut off during the project. He also is concerned that bump-outs will take away “prime” parking spaces on the street. Basquin said the city will hold a kickoff meeting for downtown business owners in the coming months to discuss the project in detail. Once the project starts, he said business owners will receive regular updates. Craig Foltos, owner of Foltos Tonsorial Parlor at 7 E.
Wilson St., said he isn’t worried about losing customers during the work. “I’m destination driven,” Foltos said. “They will find a
place to park.” The next street to receive streetscape improvements is Houston Street. That project is set to start in 2014.

Man faces charges Liquor violation leads to of domestic battery 3-day suspension for Alibi By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – A North Aurora man has been charged with domestic battery after police say he pushed his wife to the ground, choked her and threatened to kill her. Police were called to the 200 block of Magnolia Drive shortly before 10:30 a.m. S u n d a y . T h e Anthony North Aurora J. Scotti Police Department arrested Anthony J. Scotti, 35, after he turned himself in, according to a news release. Scotti had fled the scene
in his vehicle before the North Aurora Police Department arrived. Deputy Chief David Fisher with the North Aurora Police Department said Scotti turned himself in about 11:15 p.m. Sunday. He said Scotti’s wife did not seek medical attention. Scotti was held at the Aurora Branch Court in Aurora, and his bond was set at $4,000 Monday. He later was transferred to the Kane County Sheriff’s Office. He is charged with one count of domestic battery causing bodily harm and one count of interfering with the reporting of domestic violence, both Class A misdemeanors.

CHARLES – A downtown bar that had three liquor license violations within eight months can’t serve alcohol for three business days this month, the St. Charles Liquor Commission ruled Monday. Alibi Bar and Grill, 12 N. Third St., will be allowed to serve food during the suspension from 7 a.m. March 20 to 2 a.m. March 23. It also must pay a $2,000 fine plus $500 in costs – the same fine and costs The Beehive Tavern and Grille, 204 W. Main St., recently paid for a liquor violation. Mayor Don DeWitte, who also serves as liquor commissioner, said Alibi received a stiffer penalty because of its previous violations. With only one warning, DeWitte said, The Beehive had a “fairly clean” 2012.
“Clearly the repetitive nature with Alibi’s infraction was the leading factor for suspension in this case,” he said. For each of its other offenses – open after hours and advertising and giving away free alcohol – Alibi received a $1,000 fine plus $500 in costs. Its latest violation stemmed from a Jan. 13 incident in which paramedics were called to treat an intoxicated woman slumped in a bathroom stall, unable to care for herself, according to a St. Charles police report. Had Alibi staff given the woman a bottle of water and sent her home in a taxi, there wouldn’t have been a problem, DeWitte said. He acknowledged monitoring patrons is tough, but ultimately bartenders and waitstaff are responsible for not over serving customers. Whenever paramedics are called, he said, “that tells me
there was no monitoring.” Over serving in the city’s bars has come under scrutiny from the City Council. DeWitte asked aldermen in August to change closing time from 2 a.m. to 1 a.m. in an effort to curb over serving. “If the City Council was in charge of this process, they’d be looking for his license right now,” DeWitte said of Alibi owner Richard Simpson. However, he noted, fines and penalties are controlled by state statutes. City Attorney Tom Good said the discipline must be progressive. Simpson attended the hearing with attorney Ketki Shroff Steffen, who said her client is interested in having Alibi become a better business in St. Charles. Simpson said his establishment has been screening customers in recent weeks in an attempt to avoid problems.

Humane investigator to testify against bill By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com An amendment to the state’s Humane Care for Animals Act is drawing interest from a local animal rights group. Senate Bill 1532, sponsored by state Sen. Chapin Rose, RChampaign, would allow for criminal charges to be filed against a person who knowingly makes false complaints about animal neglect to the Illinois Agriculture Department with the intent to harass. The bill was sent to the Senate Criminal Law Committee, chaired by state Sen. Michael Noland, D-Elgin, who has scheduled a hearing for 9 a.m. Wednesday in Springfield. Janet Enoch, a humane investigator with Showing Animals Respect and Kindness, based in Geneva, said she plans to testify against it because it seems to discourage animal care complaints. “It doesn’t make any sense,” Enoch said of the proposed amendment. “It’s garbage.”

Driving while talking on a hand-held mobile phone soon could be illegal throughout Illinois. Last week, the state House of Representatives passed legislation by a vote of 64-46 to ban such use. Most local lawmakers opposed the measure, including state Rep. Kay Hatcher, R-Yorkville; state Rep. Tim Schmitz, R-Batavia; and state Rep. Mike Fortner, R-West Chicago. State Rep. Robert Pritchard, R-Hinckley, voted in favor of the legislation. The law would allow police to ticket drivers caught using a cellphone while driving, unless they are using a hands-free device. Drivers who receive three tickets for breaking the cellphone ban could have their driver’s licenses revoked. The law would allow drivers to use their phones while driving during an emergency. Most opponents of the bill said they believe the law would overreach. Schmitz noted the law would produce too many open questions that could complicate enforcement. He noted that while the law would allow drivers to use their cellphones “in an emergency,” it doesn’t define “emergency.” “I mean, what if my son calls, and he’s lost? You might say it’s not an emergency, but to him, it is,” Schmitz said. “This is just a silly bill.” Hatcher said the law would produce too large a burden on senior citizens and others who have diffi-
culty hearing. She also noted the law would require many to purchase new mobile devices, which would burden the poor. Supporters said the proposed law was necessary to promote public safety. Pritchard said drivers distracted by mobile phones represent a real threat to the safety of others on the road. “People’s stupidity is killing others,” Pritchard said. “We’re going to try to do what we can to limit distracted driving and make the roads safer.” Beth Mosher, a spokeswoman for the AAA Chicago Motor Club, said her organization supports the law, which would make Illinois the 11th state to ban all handheld cellphone use while driving. But Mosher noted that AAA would like to see the law go further, prohibiting all cellphone use while driving. “The distraction is the conversation, not the device,” Mosher said. It is unclear when the state Senate will take up the matter. But one of the two state senators representing the Tri-Cities said she would oppose the legislation. “People are capable of making responsible decisions, and we need to protect their right to do so,” said state Sen. Karen McConnaughay, R-South Elgin, in a prepared statement. “If we continue to unnecessarily regulate things that people can decide for themselves, where do we draw the line?” State Sen. Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove, said he had not read the legislation, nor was he familiar with it.
A snowstorm is predicted to roar its way through the Fox Valley today, dropping seven to 10 inches of heavy, wet snow, according to weather predictions. A strong weather system is expected to affect the area, with the heaviest snowfall expected during today’s afternoon rush hour, said Richard Castro, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Romeoville office.
“Snowstorms and heavier snow bands can always have wild cards, [with] pretty significant variances over short distances,” Castro said. “That does not mean some areas are not going to see under seven inches.” The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning in effect from 3 a.m. today to midnight. The height of the storm will bring one to two inches of snow an hour, with wind gusts approaching 30 mph in the afternoon to early eve-

FRANK L. BRUNO Born: Aug. 10, 1924 Died: Feb. 19, 2013; in St. Charles GENEVA – A Commonwealth Edison equipment operator for more than 30 years, Frank L. Bruno enjoyed an even longer part-time career as a musician, playing saxophone and clarinet in Chicago-area big bands, including those of Anthony “Dick” Sarlo and Vito Buffalo, eventually leading his own orchestra, The Jolly Corks (aka The Starlighters), after his retirement from Commonwealth Edison. Born to Frank and Ida Bruno (Berrettini), he was raised in Melrose Park along with his older brother, Louis, and younger brother, Nick, and also began a personal and professional relationship of 87 years with his devoted childhood friend, Anthony “Dick” Sarlo. Frank and Dick literally started kindergarten together and attended what is now Proviso East High School before briefly going their separate ways during WWII. During the earlier part of his service with the 691st Army Air Force Band, Frank was stationed at Love Field in Dallas, Texas, where he first met Virginia (Wilmarth), his future wife of more than 63 years. They were separated when Frank was shipped to the European Theater, but later were reintroduced by Jean Di Marco, who was working part-time at Oak Park Cleaners during high school
GENEVA where Virginia was also working along with her aunt Dorothy after relocating to the Chicago area in 1946. Frank was playing in the band for Jean’s high school prom and she was rattling off the names of the band members when Virginia recognized Frank’s name. They were married in 1949. Frank continued his career as a musician after leaving the service, working in bands under Ralph Willoughby, Elmo Tanner, Orrin Tucker and Allan Dewitt. Wanting a steadier source of income than a career as a musician could provide, Frank went to work for Commonwealth Edison in 1951, shortly before the birth of his first son, Frank Jr. That did not end his career as a musician. He continued to play in a number of big bands, including regular gigs at the Pick Congress in the bands of his friend Dick Sarlo, and later with the Vito Buffalo Orchestra. The gigs did not just provide extra income for his family, which soon grew to include sons Paul and Michael, but a host of lifetime friendships and a creative outlet that lasted into his 80s. Frank traveled extensively with his family, visiting nearly every national park in the continental United States, giving his children a great appreciation of the outdoors and open spaces. Frank retired from Commonwealth Edison in 1983, spending more of his free time in the business he loved and serving as president of the Elgin chapter of the American Federation of Musicians. He died Feb. 19 at Pineview Care Center in St. Charles, surrounded by his family. Frank is survived by his wife, Virginia; sons, Frank Jr., Paul and Michael; daughters-in-law, Mary and Debbie; grandchildren, Paul Jr. “Tony” and his wife Colleen, Virginia (Ginny) and Adam; brother, Nick Bruno; sister-in-law, Mary Bunn; and the nieces and nephews of his brother, Lou. Playhouse has closed By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The nonprofit Geneva Underground Playhouse has closed, citing financial problems. “The playhouse has fallen victim to financial concerns and was unable to raise the money needed to sustain the theater,” playhouse board President Eric Prebys said in a statement. Since May 2009, Geneva Underground Playhouse had been in the basement of the Urban Grille restaurant at 524 W. State St. in downtown Geneva. The first playhouse-spon-
sored program was produced before the theater opened. The show, “Inherit the Wind,” was produced in fall 2008, co-sponsored by the Kane County Bar Association, as a celebration of the association’s 150th anniversary. It sold out two shows in the rotunda of the historical Old Courthouse on Third Street in Geneva. The closing of the 50-space theater was by mutual agreement between the theater and its landlord, Joe Stanton. “Without Joe’s generosity and help, we would not have survived as long as we did,” Steve Lord, playhouse treasurer, said in a statement.

BATAVIA – James R. Doyle, 56, of Batavia, passed away Monday, March 4, 2013, at his home, surrounded by his family. He was born Sept. 27, 1956, in Evergreen Park, the son of F. Lawrence and Genevieve (Dixon) Doyle. James was a 1974 graduate of Quigley South High School and also graduated from Northern Illinois University. He worked as a project manager for United Healthcare in Chicago. He loved hockey, both playing and coaching at the Fox Valley Ice Arena. He was an avid Blackhawks fan. His greatest enjoyment in life, however, was spending time with family and friends. He will be dearly missed. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Linda (Mascitti); three children, Natalie, Peter and Joseph; mother, Genevieve Doyle of Naperville; three brothers, Robert (Carol) Doyle of California, William (Kris) Doyle of Northbrook and Edward (Suzanne) Doyle of Naperville; aunt, Lorraine McFerron of Palos Park, and other aunts and uncles; sisterin-law, Jan Doyle of Arizona; and his in-laws, Louis and Dorothy Mascitti of Chicago Heights. DANIEL JAMIESON SCHIFELING Born: Feb. 16, 1923; in Peoria Died: Feb. 27, 2013 EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – Daniel Jamieson Schifeling died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013, in his home with family. Dan was born Feb. 16, 1923, to Lois Jean and Walter Schifeling in Peoria. After Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the Army and became a B-24 pilot. He married Anna Lee Leech May 21, 1944. They had hoped to celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary next year. When the war concluded, Dan and Anna Lee returned to Illinois, where Dan completed his education, graduating from the University of Illinois Law School in 1949. Dan and Anna Lee then settled in St. Charles to create a solo practice of law and raise three sons. During this time, Dan was the first chair trumpet player and an active supporter of the Aurora American Legion Band. He also developed a love of photography. For years, he taught an adult Bible study class at the Congregational United Church of Christ. After 31 years of legal practice, Dan and Anna Lee moved to Brevard, N.C., to pursue their love of each other and the beauty of the moun-
tains of North Carolina. They enjoyed hiking all over western North Carolina, and Dan took thousands of photos of native wildflowers and scenic views. He also became the “official unofficial” photographer of many events for family and friends. In addition, he played in an English Brass Band and in more informal instrumental music groups at church and in his neighborhood. Declining health caused Dan and Anna Lee to move to Eau Claire in 2011, where they have enjoyed the mountainlike view from their hillside apartment in Oakwood Hills. Dan will be remembered as a patriot who loved his country and the music that expressed that love. He was the patriarch of his family, and his loving interest and support was appreciated by all. He instilled strong values, patience, calm under pressure and loyalty to one another. Dan was preceded in death by his mother, Lois Jean Wallick (Earle); and his father, Walter Schifeling (Frieda). He is survived by the love of his life, Anna Lee; sons, Daniel, Richard and David, and their spouses, Barbara, Iris and Joan Hamblin; grandchildren, Deirdre (Peter Colavito), Dietrich, Jeremy (Rachel Burstein), Todd (Catherine Emery), Erin, Christopher (Tracy) and William; and great-grandchildren, Sela and Madalena Colavito. The family greatly appreciates the support of the Oakwood Hills Apartments, especially managers Jill and Patrick; the care and ministry of Mary Barnes of First Congregational

He was a graduate of Elgin High School in 1960 and was CEO of York Spring Co., South Elgin. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War with the 101st Airborne Division in 1969. He was part of the division who fought at “Hamburger Hill” and was awarded the Bronze Star. James enjoyed traveling and golfing and being around family. He was a member of the West Chicago Church of Christ. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Betty Nold York; his son, Michael (Joy) York; and two grandchildren, Morgan and Haley. Staffing analysis praises services, leadership in city By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The city of Geneva is doing more with fewer employees than comparable cities and providing high-quality services with strong leadership, according to a study. Karl Nollenberger – vice president of Voorhees Associates, a management consulting firm – presented a staffing analysis of the city Monday at the City Council meeting. Nollenberger said the firm interviewed about a third of city staff and worked with past department heads to review the city’s organization and address
its overall effectiveness and efficiency. “We did a complete analysis of staffing here compared to 12 comparable cities,” Nol-
lenberger said. “We did some performance measurements, and compared the performance here in Geneva to some national benchmarks that are avail-
able to assess.” Nollenberger said the city scored high marks all around, especially with planning and goal setting, which measures
the strategic management of an organization, and providing top-notch service with 2.7 fewer employees than at comparable cities, according to the report.

A call for closer watch on prescriptions BLOOMBERG NEWS Has American medicine gotten too good at treating pain? The profession once took pain to be a positive sign of healing. As recently as 50 years ago, even patients recovering from surgery went without medicine to relieve the ache and discomfort. Today, when patients complain of pain, doctors listen and respond, and in many ways that’s a good thing. It has brought about a new problem, however: an epidemic of overdose from opioid painkillers. The number of deaths – 16,651 in 2010, according to statistics released last month – has tripled since 1999 and is now greater than fatalities from heroin and cocaine combined. For every fatality, there are 35 emergencyroom visits and 161 other reports of abuse or dependence. Statistics show the rise in abuse has tracked a rise in doctors’ orders for the drugs. To fight back, the federal government is expected to soon tighten the rules for prescribing a popular subset of painkillers, those containing the narcotic hydrocodone mixed with acetaminophen (Vicodin is one of these) or with ibuprofen. This would be a matter of moving hydrocodone combinations up a notch from Schedule III to
Schedule II, the most-restricted category of legal drugs, as recommended by an expert panel. Then, no refills will be allowed; patients will be able to get additional pills only by new prescription, either written or prescribed through an electronic system. This change may help a little. The real hope is that it will prompt a wider shift in the medical world – one that puts the risks of addiction and abuse on par with patients’ pain and recognizes that painkillers can end up, intentionally or not, in the hands of a patient’s children, spouse or friends. Notably, more than 70 percent of people who abuse prescription pain relievers get them from family members or friends. Information is key. One promising strategy to reduce prescription drug abuse has been to give doctors, pharmacists and police more information via electronic databases. For a decade, Congress has helped states fund such prescription drug monitoring programs, and at this point almost every state either has one or is planning one. Studies so far suggest they can prevent “doctor shopping” by ensuring that each prescriber knows whether the patient has recently been to another one.
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Special Knight leads the Kaneland wrestling program To the Editor: Feb. 16 was an extraordinary night for the Kaneland community as Knights wrestling finished another successful season, sending three wrestlers to Champaign and returning home our first state champion in two decades. Congrats to the entire Knights wrestling program. We all know that in addition to individual commitment and effort, it takes a team to make a champion – players, parents, coaches, educators and community. And while we are certainly proud of our Knight wrestlers, there is an unsung special Knight that deserves recognition – head coach, Monty Jahns. Monty himself once stepped onto the mat in Champaign. The experience left him with the resolve to build a program that would inspire young men to test themselves in ways

only wrestlers can. A program that retains players, creates unity, honors effort, forgives and is centered in pride – he’s done that with exacting integrity. Countless volunteer hours of planning, youth program development, practice, scouting, fundraising – even mat cleaning – have gone into the effort. Never looking for credit, Monty wanted to simply challenge and inspire his wrestlers and coaches to be their individual best. And they all respond. In an era when it is easy to become distracted from the true mission of youth sports, Monty reminds us that coaches are more than
just game-winners. In addition to technical expertise, the true coach is a community leader, educator and advocate. Selfless, tireless, open, ethical, truthful and most important – humble – with unwavering focus and attention to the personal development of each and every member of the team. Once the Mooseheart boys basketball team popped Hinckley-Big Rock to win the program’s first regional championship, the thrilling possibilities around the corner could not be ignored. The Ramblers, then winners of 15 straight games, were headed home to play in a Class 1A sectional, and appeared a likely bet to head downstate this weekend for the state tournament in Peoria. That prospect seemed just as likely when the Ramblers led Chicagoland Jewish by 10 points with a little more than 3 minutes to go in Wednesday night’s sectional semifinal. Then came a collapse so painful that coach Ron Ahrens still hasn’t had the stomach to review the game tape to dissect what went awry. Chicagoland Jewish closed
the game on a 16-3 run to stun the Red Ramblers, 70-67. “I haven’t watched it yet. I will here in a couple weeks,” Ahrens said on Monday. “It’’ll be what could I have done different to maybe help us win that game. It will be nothing about how did the kids play, did somebody play really bad, it’s going to be more about what am I going to have to do next year so we don’t lose a late lead like that.” As disappointed as Mooseheart was to see its promising postseason end in such exasperating fashion, Ahrens is careful not to attach too much emotional pain to the loss. After all, Mooseheart was led by three transfer students from South Sudan – Makur Puou, Mangisto Deng and Akim Nyang – who have dealt with plenty of real-world heartache.

Key contributors to return for next season • MOOSEHEART Continued from page 13 “You know with our kids, because many come from disadvantaged backgrounds, they deal with tougher stuff than losing a basketball game in their lifetime,” Ahrens said. “We put it into perspective that way. You know what, it’s a game, we move on, we start worrying about next year. We start worrying about our summer league coming up.” That’s not to say Ahrens is ready to brush off the late-game collapse against Chicagoland Jewish or, for that matter, a similar meltdown in a regular season loss at Hinckley-Big Rock. Mooseheart is slated to return almost all of its key contributors from this year’s 24-6 squad, and Ahrens wants the group to focus on its deficiencies between now and November. Ahrens considers those to be ball-handling and conditioning. “I think [taking care of the ball] was one of our major issues not only in this game but in all the games we lost,” Ahrens said. “We weren’t able to handle the defensive pressure. We have to get better there, and I think we need to get better conditioned. I thought we looked extremely tired [late in the Chicagoland Jewish game]. “I don’t think we’re as well conditioned as our guys thought they were because I thought they looked tired, and when they got tired, I think you make some major mental errors.” On the ball-handling front, Ahrens said he expects point guard Freddy Okito, who saw limited action this season as a freshman, to develop into a major piece of the backcourt solution for next year’s Ramblers. Puou, Deng and Nyang – whose eligibility dispute with the IHSA stirred statewide media attention in December – have one more season of eligibility with the Ramblers. They each are part of the Indiana Elite AAU program, though the 6-foot-10 Puou plays with a higher-level team than Deng and Nyang. Ahrens isn’t a big proponent of AAU ball but hopes the trio’s AAU experiences pay off.
“The thing is it’s tough to schedule for one year and to switch our schedule. And I can’t get rid of teams we’ve played for a long time because I don’t want to, honestly. I’ve been here 13 years, we’ve been playing Leland 13 years. I don’t really want to [kick them] off our schedule. We want to be good that way, as well.”

Ahrens emphasized this season that the juniors were more like freshmen from an experience standpoint. “I guess that’s the upside of AAU basketball, they’re actually getting to play games, which is good experience for them against very, very high quality competition,” Ahrens said. “It can’t hurt you, but I just don’t think [AAU ball] helps them fundamentally.” Mooseheart upgraded its nonconference schedule this season to give its new-look squad, capable of crushing most 1A foes, a challenge. A similar plan is in place for next year; Ahrens said the team expects to play in a downstate Thanksgiving tournament field at Canton that will include Peoria Manual, and the Ramblers are ticketed to join Batavia’s Night of Hoops field, where York would be the opponent. It’s a little bit more laid-back,” Gannon said. “The weather is getting nicer. It’s the end of the year.” Those last two attributes appealed to Harrington in the mid-1990s, when thenSt. Charles High coach Tom Roderick needed a throws coach in Harrington’s second year of teaching at his alma mater. Harrington did not bring track experience – the former Saints big man played basketball – but felt a passion for working with kids was the next best thing. By the time St. Charles split into East and North high schools a few years later, Harrington had accumulated enough acumen to become the first boys track coach in North Stars history. He maintained that role for 10 seasons, but recently yielded to Don Spencer. Harrington, who remained as a track assistant in 2011-12, plans to attend his share of track meets this season and lend his support from the stands. Harrington recently completed his 23rd season of coaching basketball; he served as a Naperville Central assistant for three seasons while attending nearby North Central College. Several concepts from basketball and soccer, which Harrington coached as an assistant for a handful of seasons, overlap with water polo. That leaves vocabulary as the primary hurdle. Harrington knows he’ll yell “weak side” instead of “help side” soon enough, and that adapting to his

An understanding wife completes the ensemble. “She knows that this is what I do and she knows that she’s super important to me. We find a way to make it work,” Harrington said. “She is so supportive of the fact that I pretty much choose to work 12-hour days for the most part. I always joke and tell her that she’s probably more fond of me because I’m not around all the time. I’m not as charming as she thinks I am.” Off the top: North boys and girls swimming coach Rob Rooney sported a rather formidable beard at the start of the recently completed boys season. He was much more closely shaven by the state series, which concluded with North’s eighth-place finish at the IHSA state meet Feb. 23 at New Trier. Showing solidarity with his swimmers, Rooney had his head shaved as part of his sport’s traditional rite of postseason passage.
“The boys were all talking about it and I kind of told them about midway through the season that we were united as one,” Rooney said. “I walked in the bathroom and started shaving. It was right in front of them. They didn’t even know it. I came around the corner and I was half bald.” Rooney said he last had his head shaved “a good five or Rob Rooney six years ago.” As a result, he’s a bit fuzzy on how long it will take for his locks to return. “I have no clue,” Rooney said. “As long as it does come back, I don’t care. That’s the key. It’s got to come back.”

Kevin Harrington does not tote a water polo glossary to St. Charles North practices. From the start, he brought honesty, and found that sufficed. “If you’re humble enough – and I like to think I am – I think I can walk in there and say, ‘I don’t know everything about water polo, but we will figure it out together,’ ” Harrington said. For the past few days, North’s new JV boys water polo coach has done just that, all without committing many dead-time fouls. Harrington is assisting North coach Chris Cloy this spring after electing to leave the boys track proKevin gram after a Harrington 12-year stint. Married during cross country season – during which he serves as North boys coach – Harrington faced “an amazingly difficult” decision on which longtime sport to dismiss from his schedule, basketball or track. He had overlapped between freshman boys basketball and indoor track for roughly six weeks each winter for the past dozen years. “Basketball in the afternoon and track in the evening. Or vice versa,” Harrington said. “You know what, with the ring around my finger, that just wasn’t the thing to do.” When Cloy approached Harrington about the opening, Harrington consulted his wife, Maria, who did not object. While Harrington concedes, “I’m not there to babysit; the kids will figure that out,” he and his spouse might be happy to hear this testimony from North senior Kyle Gannon, who’s also a standout swimmer: “Not that we don’t take [water polo] seriously, but

Vikings track team to pull all-nighter By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com Running two miles in one workout – let alone one 24hour period – qualifies as a breeze for most Geneva track and field athletes. To that end, the Vikings’ upcoming 24-hour relay is indeed a fun run, designed as an active fundraiser for the approaching season. The event begins at 3:30 p.m. Friday and concludes at the same time Saturday, with boys and girls athletes keeping separate batons moving as they traverse the indoor track, mile by mile, in between. “That’s a lot of miles to get to go in 24 hours,” Vikings
girls coach Peter Raak said. “It’s a pretty cool event the kids have.” Raak and boys coach Gale Gross presided over the first relay in 2010, when the boys and girls jointly raised about $11,000 for the program. When they weren’t attending classes or training, the Vikings were commissioned to get mileage donations from friends, family and community members. As athletes strayed from the task of involving the community the following spring, Gross and Raak decided to skip the relay for 2012. They’re hoping a rejuvenated effort will spark increased camaraderie among their ranks. Boys and girls will be divid-

The group that runs from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. takes the same hours in the early morning. Shifts from 7:30 to 11:30 and 11:30 to 3:30 also correspond. Given the team’s size – about 100 boys and 70 girls – athletes figure to run about one mile a shift, or eight times around the indoor track.
One boy and one girl each will run at a time. The boys’ goal of 200 miles figures to about a 7-minute mile average. The girls’ goal of 180 miles would be about an 8-minute mile average. Movies, video games and Geneva’s contest gym and weight room will be available to athletes when they’re not running. “Going from past relays, the kids think it’s cool to be at the school that late,” Raak said. “It’s a fun aspect to think they’re the only ones there along with the coaches and some parents who chaperone. Obviously we don’t let them run around the entire school, but I think they find it’s a neat
thing they’re there that late by themselves.” Raak said he and Gross are exploring possible charity donations from the fundraiser, but nothing has been finalized. It’s not as if they’ll be at a loss for time to think or socialize during the relay. “Definitely people – whether they’re a sprinter, distance runner, thrower, vaulter, jumper or whatnot – we all kind of get it. We all can appreciate what each other does,” Raak said. “You’re in there day in, day out, and even though we all break down in different events, we all warm up together and have that mutual respect for one another.”

Focused Hawks goalie shakes off last season DETROIT – Not all that long ago, Corey Crawford was the whipping boy for all that ailed the Blackhawks. These days, he’s among the reasons why the Hawks are the NHL’s best team. On Sunday, before the Hawks extended their season-long scoring streak to 22 games, Joel Quenneville characterized his team’s goalies as consistent. It’s a tag that never would have been tied to Crawford by the end of last season when Quenneville suggested Crawford’s struggles could be linked to some sort of sophomore slump. The complaints lodged by fans were almost impossible to ignore. But Crawford pledged to move on, anxious to leave his inconsistent play in net during the Hawks’ first-round playoff loss to Phoenix behind him. Since then, he’s done an about face. He boasts a 10-0-3 record and a career-best and league-leading 1.41 goalsagainst average. In Sunday’s 2-1 shootout win over the Red Wings, Crawford made 32 saves and stonewalled Detroit’s three shootout contestants to preserve the victory.
VIEWS Jeff Arnold Perhaps most impressive is that Crawford did so after facing only three first-period shots, forcing the third-year goalie to remain focused while not being overloaded with work early on before knocking away 32 of the 33 shots he faced the rest of the way. “He’s unbelievable,” Hawks winger Patrick Kane said. “It’s almost like we’re saying that every game now. But both goaltenders have been great and a huge part of our success this year.” Crawford has split time this season with Ray Emery, the second half of the Hawks’ 1-2 punch in net. Together, they’ve combined to make the Hawks’ the league’s best in goals-against average (1.67 a game) while managing to get the same level of support in front of them regardless of who is playing. Crawford and Emery have become nearly interchange-

able. Last week against St. Louis, Crawford started but left after the first period, only to have Emery step in and help preserve a shutout in a 3-0 victory. After missing Friday night’s game against Columbus while still dealing with an upper body injury, Crawford took over again against Detroit on Sunday, continuing the Hawks’ dominance over the rest of the league. Maintaining focus has been critical for Crawford, keeping him among the league’s elite goalkeepers all season. “I’m just watching the puck the whole game – I don’t know how else to explain it,” Crawford said. “I’ve just been able to bear down and really focus, especially on little things on the side of the net and just make sure not to give up those bad goals that change momentum.” It’s a major shift from last

year when Crawford allowed 2.72 goals a game in 57 games, registering a .903 save percentage. Asked if he’s playing the best hockey of his career, Crawford said he thought he competed at a high level at times last year but lacked some of the mental toughness and consistency that has seemed to make all the difference during the Hawks’ current run. Crawford has been able to stay sharp despite splitting time with Emery over the first 22 games. But having that steady competition on a regular basis, he maintains, has kept him at the top of his game, “Ray’s been awesome, and we’re just kind of feeding off one another,” Crawford said. “It’s nice when it really doesn’t matter who goes in there. Both guys go in there and are focused and just do their job. It’s definitely a confidence builder for the
guys that are playing in front of us.” The defense has certainly helped during a season when the Hawks are 12-0-3 in onegoal games. Quenneville has established confidence in Crawford and Emery alike, acknowledging Sunday that having two top goalies isn’t a bad problem to have for a team that hopes to keep its success rolling all the way to the playoffs and beyond. He referred to his goalie rotational system as a “healthy situation.” “The consistency [in net] has been probably the best situation we’ve been in, and it’s been a key factor to our start,” Quenneville said. “Both guys want to play, and both guys have proven in this league they can be a top goalie, and it just seems like no matter what player you look at in our lineup, everybody’s making a meaningful contribution. And that starts with our goaltenders.”

8SPORTS SHORT Kaneland graduate named All-Patriot League Elburn native, Kaneland graduate and Holy Cross junior forward Dave Dudzinski has been selected to the All-Patriot League second team in men’s basketball, as voted by the conference’s head coaches. Dudzinski has averaged a team-best 15.0 points, 6.6 rebounds and 0.9 blocked shots a game this year, while hitting 47.9 percent (157 of 328) of his field goal attempts and 82.4 percent (103 of 125) of his free throws. He finished the regular season ranked fourth in the league in scoring, fourth in rebounding, fourth in free throw percentage, eighth in blocked shots and ninth in field goal percentage.
Dudzinski has led the team in scoring 15 times this year and scored in double-figures 25 times. Over the course of his career as a Crusader, he has now totaled 831 points, 439 rebounds and 68 blocked shots, while connecting on 49.2 percent (305 of 620) of his field goals and 80.3 percent (188 of 234) of his free throws. BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM Small rooms need small furniture, but large families need large tables. This problem has been solved in a variety of ways since the 17th century. Homes with long center halls, which were needed to keep the house cool filled the space with several tables that could fit together to form one large table. A favorite style was a four-legged center table and two end tables with curved leaves that could be raised to be level with the center table or dropped to hang at the side. By Victorian times, the table could be on a center pedestal with sides that pulled out so leaves could be added. By the late 1890s, patented slides and hardware made it possible to pull both ends of a table out, then to fill the vacant space with leaves that matched the tabletop. And by the 1900s, some tables had self-storing leaves that popped into place from under the tabletop when the top was turned or pulled out. But the most interesting and rarest are round tables made larger by the addition of wedge-shaped pieces, or a group of tables that could be made into one round table. Peter Hvidt (1916-1986) was an architect and furniture designer in Copenhagen, Denmark. He made furniture, usually of teak and steel, in the 1960s. Pieces were very streamlined in the prevailing Danish style - thin legs and arms, no fancy trim, very little upholstery. The unique table was made of three curved shapes that could be put together
in different ways. There could be one large, round table, a middle-size table or a small table for one. Rago Arts and Auction Center in New Jersey sold one recently for $3,750.

Earlier sheet music may sell for more, especially if the cover is interesting, colorful or appeals to collectors. Most collectors want sheet music that’s complete, untrimmed, unframed and in good condition. Start at $5 to $30 for unframed examples. Ask more if they’re very unusual.

The plates have a plain center and a slightly scalloped edge trimmed in gold, gold leaves and gold flowers. Can you tell me who made them? A: The Edelstein Porcelain Factory was located in Kups, Bavaria, Germany, from about 1934 until a few years ago. Dishes marked “Maria Theresia” can be found with several different decorations, so it may be the shape’s name. The number is a pattern number. Maria Theresia dishes are part of an inexpensive line. A plate is worth less than $10. *** Q: I recently acquired a Mobo pressed-metal child’s riding horse. The label on the front reads “It steers!” and “Sebel Products Ltd., New York.” It’s in good condition, with little paint loss. Can you tell me when it was made and its approximate value?
This three-part teak coffee table was designed by Peter Hvidt for France and Son of Denmark in the 1960s. It is 17 inches high and, when put together, 51 inches in diameter. Rago Arts and Auction Center of Lambertville, N.J., sold it for $4,000. to 1972. When the rider pushed on the stirrups, the horse moved forward. The mechanism was patented in 1942, but production didn’t begin until 1947. Several different models of the horse were made. “Magic Steering” was added in 1950. The horse could be made to turn by pushing on one stirrup. The company opened a factory in Erith, Kent, England, in 1947 and a subsidiary in New York City in 1948. A Mobo horse probably would sell at auction for $100 to $325. The better the condition, the higher the price. ***

Q: I have a John F. Kennedy “friendship spoon.” One side of the handle is marked with the year “1961.” The other side just has the number “19,” because the last two numbers of the year are missing. Rogers Manufacturing Co. made souvenir spoons honoring the 1962 flight of Friendship 7 in both silver plate and gold plate. Piloted by astronaut John Glenn, it was the first manned orbital flight launched by the United States. In 1961, President Kennedy announced the goal of landing a man on the moon by the end of the decade. Seven astronauts were chosen, and a tradition of letting the astronauts choose the name of their space capsules began with the first flight. ‘21 and Over’ is a total dud By ED SYMKUS GateHouse News Service It’s a few hours after I attended a screening of the new comedy “21 & Over,” yet I’m still sitting at my desk pondering it. I’m not thinking about the script’s wit, or the directors’ abilities to coax strong performances out of their actors. No, I’m wondering how this thing got made, and then released. I’m also trying to imagine the pitch meeting, where the filmmakers shared their ideas with the studio. It was probably something like, “Well, it’s along the lines of ‘The Hangover,’ but it’s for college kids, and we’re going to make it in the style of the Farrelly brothers.” And maybe it sounded good at the time, or looked good as a one-page treatment. But it certainly didn’t translate into anything that anyone is going to be proud of. Worse, it’s nothing that anyone – college-age included – is going to like. The flimsy plot has college senior Jeff Chang (Justin Chon) all set to go on a med school interview first thing in the morning. But on the day before, which is his 21st birthday, two old high school pals show up at his doorstep, ready to celebrate that milestone day. They would be Casey (Skylar Aston), who’s supposed to pass as

the film’s voice of reason, and Miller (Miles Teller), a foul-mouthed fast talker, whose idea of fun is to spout of sexual innuendo and racial slurs to anyone who crosses his path. He’s easily recognizable as the film’s reckless holder-on of juvenile mentality. “I can’t go out tonight,” says Jeff Chang (who is always called by both names). That’s a signal, of course, for a night of drinks flowing and bars being hopped, despite the fact that Jeff Chang’s stern dad is in town to get him to that interview. An excruciatingly long-feeling 15 minutes of screen time later, Jeff Chang is out cold, and his still somehow sober pals are trying to carry him home, where he can sleep it off before that interview, when they realize they don’t know where they are and they have no idea where he lives. In “The Hangover,” our heroes lose a person. In this lame, painfully
unfunny movie, they lose an address. That’s it. They spend the rest of the film trying to get him back to wherever home is. Here’s a sampling of the barriers they come across during the nightlong search: Casey meets cute but banal Nicole (Sarah Wright); both guys meet short-tempered and nasty cheerleader fellow Randy (Jonathan Keltz); there’s a sorority house full of very angry Latino women; there’s a rampaging buffalo; there’s nudity and an inordinate amount of binge drinking, and Jeff Chang’s dad, who’s even angrier than those sorority sisters; and there’s an extended sequence of slo-mo vomiting. It’s one raucous scene after another, at least until, inexplicably, there are some serious moments that delve into the importance of friendship, along with hints that Jeff Chang has a “dark side.” Everything about this movie is uneven. It’s slapdash filmmaking at its worst, with very little thought given to making plot elements add up. The resolution of the momentarily intriguing Jeff Chang dark side business turns out to be inconsequential, and the forced, last-second happy ending is both absurd and completely unsatisfying.

Last summer, during one of his moments of inebriation, he shot a gun into the air as a “surprise” to the eight family members who were sitting within two to 10 feet of him. He takes pride in the fact that his guns are kept loaded, as “what good is an unloaded gun?” On two separate occasions, I know for a fact that a loaded gun was found unsecured in his home. When my husband and I travel with our children, ages 7, 5 and 4, to visit his family, we stay in
Earl’s home. I feel the combination of alcohol and loaded, unsecure guns is not safe for my children. I have suggested to my husband that we stay in a hotel during our visits from now on. The problem is, my husband is unable to stand up to his father. He told me that when he tried talking to him about his concerns, Earl called him a “wimp.” Please tell me how to get through to my husband. – GunShy in South Carolina Dear Gun-Shy: I’m sorry to say that your father-in-law may have your husband pegged accurately. A man who would allow his small children to stay in the home of an alcoholic who keeps unsecured, loaded weapons around IS a wimp. Your husband doesn’t have to “stand up” to his father. Treat peptic ulcer by removing bacterial cause Dear Doctor K: I’ve been diagnosed with a peptic ulcer. What does that mean? And what’s the treatment? Dear Reader: A peptic ulcer is a sore or hole that forms in the lining of the stomach or upper part of the small intestine (called the duodenum). If your ulcer is small, you may have few symptoms. But if the ulcer is deep, it can cause bleeding or serious pain. What causes the ulcer? For many decades, doctors thought they knew the answer: It was acid. Stress and psychological problems led a person to make too much stomach acid. It was a reasonable theory. Your stomach does make acid to help you digest food. The acid also could digest your stomach if it weren’t protected. But it is: Your stomach is lined with a layer of special cells and mucus. The mucus protects the lining of the stomach and duodenum from damage by acid and digestive enzymes. The “acid theory” held that peptic ulcers were caused either by too much stomach acid, or by a failure in the production of protective mucus, or both. Almost everyone was convinced the acid theory was correct, even though there was little evidence for it.
ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Beginning in the early 1980s, two young Australian doctors – Barry Marshall and Robin Warren – pursued a very different theory. They found an unusual kind of bacteria, Helicobacter pylori, inside many peptic ulcers. They argued that these bacteria cause inflammation, weakening the stomach lining and the protective mucus. When stomach acid got into the ulcer, it made the ulcer worse. (I’ve put an illustration of this on my website, AskDoctorK.com.) To help prove the point, Marshall swallowed the bacteria – and shortly thereafter developed peptic ulcers. For a decade their ideas were ridiculed. But slowly the evidence became undeniable. The bacteria were even identified as a cause of stomach cancer. In 2005, Marshall and Warren were honored with the Nobel Prize – and very few of their colleagues who had ridiculed them apologized. Another common cause of stomach lining irritation and ulcers is nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as
aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn). NSAIDs block the formation of certain chemicals that normally help protect against ulcers. Contrary to popular belief, stress and spicy foods do not seem to increase the risk of ulcers. Treatment of ulcers depends on their cause. Ulcers caused by H. pylori are treated with antibiotics and acid-suppressing medication. Successfully killing the H. pylori bacteria will greatly reduce your chances of developing another ulcer. If your ulcer was caused by an NSAID, the treatment is to stop taking it. Your ulcer will begin to heal almost immediately. You’ll also take medications to reduce acid damage during healing. These may include antacids to neutralize stomach acids. Or you may take H2 blockers or proton pump inhibitors to decrease the amount of acid your stomach produces. Acid makes any ulcer worse, but as Marshall and Warren showed, the acid is not the cause of peptic ulcers.

Dr. Wallace: My husband and I are “social” drinkers. We drink at home occasionally and at social functions. We both feel we can control our drinking, and it has rarely caused any kind of problem. We have a 17-yearold son who is attending parties where, we are sure, alcohol is being served. My husband wants to introduce him to alcohol in our home, so he can teach him how to respect it rather than have to learn about drinking from his peers. I don’t think this is a good idea. My husband and I are social drinkers, but I would be happy if our son never consumed a drop of alcohol in his life. But my husband’s plan might have some merit. What do you think? –Mother, Batavia, Ill. Dear Mother: Your husband’s plan to teach your son to “respect” alcohol by introducing him to drink at home would be a serious mistake. Would he introduce him to drugs at home so he could learn to respect them and use them socially? You must remember that alcohol is a highly addictive and depressive drug, which has wreaked havoc on millions of families. When you and your husband drink at home in front of your son, you are sending a message that it’s OK to drink. Children are deeply influenced by what their parents do – far more than by what they say. If you truly care that your son never consumes a drop of alcohol in his life, set an example for him

I will graduate from high school shortly and have been accepted at the University of Arizona. But my college education will have to go on hold because I’m two months pregnant. My parents are devastated because I am an only child, and they had high hopes that I would follow in their footsteps by eventually earning a degree in education. Both of my parents are demanding that I get an abortion. I keep telling them that an abortion is out of the question. Let’s assume East takes that trick and shifts to a low diamond. Declarer wins with his king and plays another heart. East wins and cashes his diamond ace. Who has the spade queen? Since East has produced 11 points, it must be West. Remember the passes as well as the bids, and count those high-card points.
