Vintage shop offers affordable furniture, locally made gift items By JESSICA CILELLA msleditorial@shawmedia.com From 1930s china cabinets to mid-century modern dressers, shoppers can expect to find something new every time they visit Nest Vintage Modern in Brookfield. The vintage store has been so successful since opening last July that co-owners Alana Waters-Piper and Sara Emmick are planning to move it in May to a bigger space in La Grange with more foot traffic. “We’re excited about being able to do it,” Emmick said. “It’s happening a little sooner than we thought it might.” Specialties in the store include hand-painted and refurbished vintage furniture that Emmick and Waters-Piper find at garage sales, thrift stores, estate sales and even in alleys or along the side of the road. “The focus of the store is really giving new life to old pieces,”

Emmick said. “There’s a definite theme of re-purposing, reusing. We try not to junk anything.” Much of the furniture is redone with chalk paint, and Emmick or Waters-Piper will often demonstrate in the store how to use it so customers can try it on their own projects. The shop also features jewelry, cards, purses, linens and home decor — all with a vintage vibe — that often are made locally. “It’s a very realistic thing as a shop to say I really prefer to source my goods from local women who are making the things that I want to sell. I don’t have to go the mass-market route,” Waters-Piper said. “That’s a huge part of our core value.” Waters-Piper said they try to keep items affordable, too, with china cabinets priced between $275 and $300 and dressers between $225 and $250. “There’s a pretty good range of stuff in the $5-to-$30 range,”

she said, adding that they don’t want anyone to be deterred from items they love because of high prices. Both women grew up appreciating vintage. Emmick said she wore her mother’s skirts from the 1950s in high school and Waters-Piper fondly remembers admiring her grandmother’s post-Depression-era kitchen. Their styles are a little different, with Emmick gravitating toward retro designs and bright colors and Waters-Piper’s interest in softer colors and pieces from the 1940s or earlier. Together, they create a nice balance in the store, but the way they met was surprising. While living near Indianapolis, Emmick unknowingly followed her future business partner online through a blog and business called Blue Birds Goods. When she moved to Western Springs less than a year ago, she was shocked to see that

Blue Birds Goods had recently changed to Nest Vintage Modern and was just a few minutes away. Emmick became a regular consignor at the store until a few months ago, when Waters-Piper asked if she would help her run the store. “It was great timing,” Emmick said, adding that it has helped her learn the area. Waters-Piper said she has been much happier since leaving her job as a creative director and running the store full-time. “When I opened the doors to the store the first day, the fact that anybody showed up and wanted to buy something from me was just completely mind-blowing,” she said, adding that she now has regular customers who come from as far as Geneva. “People are showing up and the community has been so gracious.” For information or to shop online, visit nestvintagemodern. com.

Two events marked the end of February, the first drew world attention, the second was little noticed. The first, of course, was Pope Benedict XVI’s abdication; the second was Robert Mugabe’s 89th birthday - two events that underscore the difference between responsibility and denial. As you probably know, Pope Benedict was moved to abdicate by his fear that at age 85 he was no longer able to fully discharge his responsibilities as leader of one of the world’s great faiths. On the other hand, Mugabe, chief executive of Zimbabwe for the last 33 years, has made it clear that he has no intention of stepping down. Most will see Benedict’s decision as positive; while those of us who follow events in Zimbabwe can only see Mugabe’s continuation in power as a tragedy for the people of that country.

Alan Martin, research director of Partnership Africa Canada, recently observed of those sanctioned, “The sanction list is a pretty small one, and it’s very targeted. It is limited to people who are accused of serious human rights abuses or corruption. It’s a pretty hard process to get on that list. It’s not something that’s done willynilly. Most of these people are known criminals or murderers.” And it is Marange diamonds that have brought affairs in Zimbabwe sharply into focus in the jewelry business. In short, the Marange mines are owned and operated, using coercively exploited labor, by the “criminals and murderers” Alan Martin spoke of; and they do so with the tacit consent of Mugabe’s government.

If you’re not acute to Zimbabwean affairs, let me bring you up to speed. In the 1960s a white dominated country, Rhodesia, came into being to the north of the Republic of South Africa. The former colonial power, Britain, the U.S. and the U.N. refused to recognize the new country, demanding voting rights for its black African majority. The black majority took direct action; and a civil war of more than a decade’s duration erupted in the country. When, in 1980, the smoke cleared, Mugabe emerged as the newly anointed Zimbabwe’s first prime minister, and after 1987, the country’s president. To refer to him as the nation’s ‘ruler’ is not unwarranted; and the ensuing slide into economic disaster as the result of corrupt and coercive politics only underscore’s Lord Acton’s observation that, “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men.” So it has been with Mugabe.

The CIA World Fact Book addresses the current situation in Zimbabwe as follows. “Zimbabwe is a source, transit, and destination country for men, women, and children trafficked for the purposes of forced labor and sexual exploitation; some victims of forced prostitution are subsequently transported across the border to South Africa where they suffer continued exploitation; Zimbabwean men, women, and children are subjected to forced labor in agriculture and domestic service in rural areas, as well as domestic servitude and sex trafficking in cities and towns; children are also utilized in the commission of illegal activities, including gambling and drug smuggling. The Government of Zimbabwe does not fully comply with the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking and is not making significant efforts to do so; the government did not report investigations, prosecutions, or convictions of trafficking cases and continued to rely on an international organization to provide law enforcement training, coordinate victim care and repatriation, and lead prevention efforts.” For the U.S. Government and the European Union these behaviors have raised a cautionary flag. In 2003 both the U.S. and the E.U. imposed trade sanctions on Zimbabwe; but not on the country as a whole so much as on particular individuals - who just happen to be ‘important’ Mugabe supporters.

While the governments of most African states (many of which have earned, in varying degrees, international opprobrium) officially view American and European sanctions as ‘illegal’, the sanctions are currently limiting the shipment of Marange ‘blood diamonds’ into international trade. Though some in the World Diamond Council argue that, as the important shippers won’t ship Marange diamonds, the sanctions actually make tracking them more difficult, Jewelers of America (an important trade organization) supports the sanctions; and this is telling. Mugabe may be in denial about the character of his government and its supporters, but the thugs in his entourage are so offensive to the U.S. and E.U. jewelry communities that the sanctions will likely stay in force until significant reforms have ousted Mugabe’s thug supporters from their privileged bastions of power. $31.3M budget includes projects, improvements LA GRANGE — The village of La Grange will consider adopting a $31.3 million budget in April. The budget includes $5.8 million earmarked for planned capital improvements, such as $2.1 million for sewer projects, $939,000 for street repair and $885,000 for Stone Avenue Station improvements. The capital improvement priorities were established by the Village Board at a workshop in January. A series of workshops were conducted last fall, at which time the Village Board provided staff with consensus direction on a number of budgetary issues in the development of the proposed FY 2013-14 Village budget. John Penicook dies after battle against a brain tumor By LLOYD J. NELSON msleditorial@shawmedia.com LA GRANGE — Longtime La Grange resident and active community member John Penicook died March 6 after losing a battle against a brain tumor.

He was 55 years old. A visitation was held on Friday at Hallowell and James in Countryside, followed by a funeral at St. Francis Xavier Church in La Grange Saturday. Penicook, husband of the President of the Park District

of La Grange Mary Ellen Penicook, was involved in the community serving as a little league coach, a basketball and football coach at Saint Francis Xavier School and an AYSO referee. He, along with his wife, lived in La Grange for 24 years.

“A lot of parents and kids remember him as the coach or the encourager,” his 23-year-old daughter, Katie Penicook said. Penicook was diagnosed 18 months ago in August with a non-operable brain tumor, according to his daughter. Katie said he had been playing basketball in Chicago and he couldn’t raise his arm, which set off alarms and prompted him to get an MRI and biopsy, where he learned of the tumor. Penicook underwent chemotherapy. “Initially, everything went fine,” Katie said. “Everything was fine for a while.” However, in February his motor skills started to deteriorate, and the right side of his body went limp. Toward the end, Penicook lost verbal skills, communicating mostly through ‘yes’ and ‘no.’ “In the hospital late January through February, he’d watch every Illini basketball game,” Katie said. “We’d have to bring in the laptop to stream them. And while he spoke through mostly yes or no, the Illini was always a yes.” An avid cigar lover, Penicook was raised on a farm in Piper City, Illinois. Although he was valedictorian of his high school, he didn’t want to go to college. Instead he wanted to be

a farmer and high school basketball coach. His parents eventually convinced him to go to college. Penicook attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champain where he got his bachelor’s of science in agricultural economics in 1981. In 1982, he received his Master’s of Science in Industrial Administration in Business at Purdue University. He eventually went on to become Global Co-Head of Fixed Income at UBS Global Asset Management However, you could take the boy from the farm, but you couldn’t take the farm from the boy in Penicook’s case. Penicook bought a John Deere tractor that he often rode around the neighborhood and also coached basketball at various levels, remaining true to his childhood aspirations. For many, Penicook was the ultimate encourager, Katie said. Diane Bryks, a Berwyn resident and teacher at St. Francis Xavier School in La Grange, recently celebrated an Oscar nomination for her work on the music in the film “Lincoln.” Bryks performed pieces with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra that were featured in the score. Although “Lincoln” lost to “Life of Pi” in that category, Bryks won in ours. More good news from Flying High Gym in Countryside: The girls there recently competed in the Sand Dollar meet in Orlando and brought home several medals, including multiple first-places on the vault and balance beam. Spring is just around the corner, and soon there will be more than bright tulips dotting the landscape. Come May, it’ll be all fun and games on the sidewalks of La Grange. Dozens of colorful bag toss board games will be displayed as a whimsical outdoor art exhibit sponsored by the La Grange Business Association. The LGBA organizes this annual rite of summer as a way to entice visitors and residents to explore La Grange and support its small businesses. Local businesses can purchase a COMMUNITY set of unfinished bag toss VOICE game boards and arrange for a local artist to design and Nancy paint them. Cummings The boards will be displayed upright on the sidewalk in front of the sponsoring business from Memorial Day through Labor Day. They are auctioned for local charities in September. This is the seventh year that the LGBA has organized this popular outdoor art exhibit, which in the past has featured elephants, artist’s easels, Adirondack chairs, rain barrels, rocking chairs and clocks. The art pieces are seal-coated at Douglas Auto Body in La Grange, one of the main sponsors, so that they are suited for outdoor display. The village of La Grange also sponsors the exhibit. We encourage you to patronize the many local businesses that sponsor this public art exhibit. These small businesses contribute to the local economy by bringing growth and innovation to La Grange. The seventh-grader at McClure Junior High spelled the word correctly Feb. 21 and her goal of participating in

the Scripps National Bee in Washington D.C. in May was realized. She ousted nine other contestants throughout Cook County to take home top prize, which included a Webster’s dictionary, an award certificate and a yearlong membership to Britannica Online. “At first it didn’t register,” Abiad said. “I was really surprised. I wasn’t expecting to win this year.”

What was your first experience in a spelling bee like last year? I was really nervous. I didn’t know what to expect. I’ve seen it on television. But it turned out better than I imagined. I didn’t do too well, though. I made it to round three or four of my school bee.

What was different about your experience this year? It was a lot less nervewracking. I knew what I was

up against. I knew the general level of the words.

DR. GEORGE OETTING Dr. George Oetting (LtC USAF ret), formerly of Riverside, died Tuesday, February 19, 2013, in Montgomery AL. He is survived by his wife Patricia (Schipplock), and his three children: Jeff (Rosalie), Thomas (Marguerite), and Diane; a sister Judith, eight grandchildren, and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his mother, Lillian; his father George, of Riverside; and his sister Nanci Oetting Hulama, Fort Worth, TX. George was an expert in education and had a rich career with the USAF and the Medical Association of the state of Alabama. He attended Ames School, Hauser Junior High, and graduated from RiversideBrookfield High School, where he participated in football, wrestling, and track and field. George had a bachelor's degree from Lawrence University, and a Master's and Doctorate in Education from the University of Illinois, He was an adept amateur magician and used the stage name, Mr. Binks, which is how he acquired his nickname. A lifelong fan of the Chicago Bears, George was a great-nephew of George Halas, and as a youth, had the opportunity to attend the Bears pre-season training camps. He had friends all over the world and loved to travel with his wife Pat during his retirement years. In lieu of a memorial service or funeral he, wanted his friends and family to spend time together at the Montgomery Zoo. On Saturday, February 23, George's family greeted visitors near a bench named in his honor at the Zoo The family has requested that memorials be sent to the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation or the Montgomery Zoo. JOHN ANDREW PENICOOK, JR. John Andrew Penicook, Jr., passed away peacefully on March 6, 2013, with his family at his side. John was a farm boy at heart. Born on a farm in Piper City, Illinois, to John and Ruth Ann Penicook on February 3, 1958, he was an early riser and a hard worker, who grew up wanting to farm and coach basketball. Because he excelled in school, his parents convinced him to try college for a year, and he headed to the University of Illinois to study Ag Economics. There he found a thirst for knowledge, a love of the Illini, many lifelong friends at Delta Sigma Phi, and he met the love of his life, Mary Ellen Sirridge. He earned a BS and a BA from the U of I, and continued his pursuit of education earning an MSIA from Purdue, later passing the CPA, and the CFA while on the job. He spent his career progressing at a firm that evolved around him. He landed his first job in Chicago at First National Bank of Chicago, in farm management, was promoted into the in-

ment, was promoted into the investment area, which spun off as Brinson Partners, which was bought by Swiss Bank, which merged with UBS. He worked with many brilliant investment professionals over the years first as a mentee, and later as a mentor. Today, they are all considered friends. John was a great dad who enjoyed nightly family dinners discussing business, politics, current events and life lessons with his kids. He coached as much as his job would permit, and was known for his booming voice on the sidelines cheering on players from both teams. John created a loving family and will be remembered always by his wife Mary Ellen (nee Sirridge), his daughter Katie, and sons Charlie, Robby and Tommy. He will be missed by his parents, Jack and Ruth Ann Penicook, his sister Janice (John) Havins, his brother Brian, his in-laws Dan (Roberta) Sirridge, Bob (Althea) Sirridge, Joe Sirridge, Kathryn (Mike) Duffey, Larry (Elda) Sirridge, Patty Sirridge, Susan (Jim) Soderberg, Eileen (Ed) McMahon, and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and godchildren. His neighbors in LaGrange will remember the great times shared with John and will miss the sweet sound of his John Deere tractor plowing the snow from the sidewalks and driveways of 8th Avenue, on cold snowy mornings. A Funeral Mass was held Saturday March 9th at St. Francis Xavier Church in LaGrange. Interment is private. Parkers’ Restaurant still reeling them in After often driving past Parkers’ Restaurant & Bar in Downers Grove, a friend and I stepped inside for a weekday lunch and discovered why the parking lot is so frequently packed. We received a warm welcome at the entry, and were given our choice of seating: the dining room or the clublike lounge with a wine-rack wall, old-school red leather chairs and booths, and grand piano for the live evening entertainment. We opted for a table near the granite-surrounded fireplace in the elegant dining room, where decorative touches range from culinary-inspired paintings to sumptuous displays of breads off the open kitchen separated from diners by a turquoise mosaic wall. To begin the meal, two varieties of bread and crispy flatbread were served with whipped butter and freshly prepared hummus. The restaurant stresses its devotion to foods from the American farmer and fisherman, so I ordered grilled Regal Springs Tilapia ($12) served with plain mashed potatoes, green beans and an herb-in-

fused, sun-dried tomato garnish to spice up the mild fish. My friend raved about the chef’s pick called Amish Chicken “Mac and Cheese,” noting, “Any meal starts well when it has a slice of bacon on top. The rich cheese sauce did not overpower the dish, and you could taste the other ingredients.” The entree ($14) was prepared with cavatappi pasta, Amish chicken, asparagus, smoked gouda and Applewood smoked bacon. My dining companion appreciated the bite-size morsels of chicken incorporated throughout the dish, as opposed to so many meals where slices are dropped on top like an afterthought. Other enticing options include Lobster Bisque ($9.50); Surf, Surf & Turf Sliders ($15), featuring a Mini Maryland Crab Cake, Tuna Burger and Certified Angus Beef with Tillamook Cheddar Cheeseburger; and Herb Crusted Japanese Eggplant ($14; $18 at dinner) with sun-dried and basil gnocchi, arugula, portobellas, spinach and Parmigiano-Reggiano. It’s rich with a gooey center.” We opted for the Vermont Maple Sugar Cotton Candy ($4), nostalgic fun for a group looking to share a sweet tidbit.

The Riverside Arts Center celebrates its 20th anniversary as a hub of creativity for the artistic-minded and a staple in the arts community in Riverside and surrounding suburbs. The center, dubbed RAC, is a creative double-whammy, featuring the Freeark Gallery, as well as offering classes in diverse art mediums. Gallery Director Karen Azarnia was first exposed to the gallery when she exhibited her own work there in January 2011. She had such a good experience working with RAC, she jumped at the chance to take on a gallery assistant position.

Shortly after, she worked her way up to director. Azarnia is a prime example of how an arts center can be beneficial to the community and the individuals involved in it. “We really want to serve the community and give something back to the people that help support us,” Azarnia says. “The more I work with the center, the more I see its value and worth in the community. The way it ties in and pulls out all these people and resources … I continue to be impressed and amazed with the level of commitment.” Community is one of the values RAC team members pride themselves on, and it’s reflected in their commitment

to youth art education. The majority of classes are for kids, and the center even offers a spring break art class as a creative outlet during the school holiday. RAC also highlights youth artists in the gallery. Through March, the fourth annual exhibit by Riverside Brookfield High School’s advanced placement art students is showcased. “A big component of providing education in the arts for children is the AP exhibit,” Azarnia says. “As an artist myself, I know that I had that opportunity, and it’s unique and valuable for the students. It’s important because it’s meant to provide students with a pro-

fessional exhibition opportunity.” The anniversary year has spawned an ongoing, celebratory event titled “20 for 20,” featuring 20 art events. They kicked off in January, and continue next with the Peeps Diorama Contest on March 14, the Farnsworth House Trip on April 21, and the Prom-O-Rama! Annual Gala on May 18. “We really welcome everyone,” Azarnia says. “The Riverside Arts Center is for arts professionals, the emerging artist, the viewing audience, and anyone that would like to learn a little more about art. Riverside Brookfield’s Miki Ljuboja scored a 30 on his ACT to go along with his outstanding basketball stats.

RIVERSIDE — As a junior, Miki Ljuboja battled injuries throughout the high school and AAU seasons. As a result, his movement was limited and at times he looked more like a lumbering big man than the well-rounded center he is. Ljuboja still made sure to improve his game during the offseason. One of those improvements was his longrange shooting. The 6-foot-8 senior was one of Riverside Brookfield’s most efficient three-point shooters, draining 15 threes in 42 attempts (35.7 percent) this season. Ljuboja “Before this season I honestly don’t remember taking more than by the like two or three three-pointers in a numbers game,” Ljuboja said. “It was something that I worked hard on this off18.1 Points per season. I just wanted to keep getting game better in every aspect of my game.” His ability to make threes is just 9.0 Rebounds per one example of what he brought to game the table for RB. This season, he led 1.8 Blocks per the Bulldogs in points, rebounds and game blocks. The threes just added an extra bit of satisfaction. “It’s always a good feeling when you can hit one when the other team’s big man is guarding you and sagging off a few feet,” he said. For the past two seasons, Ljuboja has been a key part of RB’s success, which has included two conference championships and a 44-12 combined record. Last year’s all-area MVP, Damonta Henry, joined Ljuboja in forming one of the area’s best duos. They helped continue a string of success at RB that has included 12 straight conference titles under coach Tom McCloskey. “The culture that Coach McCloskey, Coach (Dan) Herbeck and Coach (Mike) Reingruber have created here is just amazing,” Ljuboja said. “It’s just such an honor that I got to play two years on the varsity level at RB. I wouldn’t have wanted to play anywhere else.” Ljuboja will play somewhere else next year, he just doesn’t know where yet. He has a wide variety of college options, including Division I programs, smaller schools or even a year of prep school. He is younger than his classmates because he skipped third grade. Ljuboja scored a 30 on his ACT, and the University of Chicago is among his options. After being injured during the AAU season, Ljuboja was forced to wait for the offers to come in while he showed what he could do during the high school season. “I’m looking forward to finishing it out,” he said of the recruiting process. “Since I was hurt last year during the biggest recruiting period it definitely put a lot more stress on me this season. It was tough, but I can’t complain. “I’m definitely happy to have options. It’s always the best thing, just to have options.”

School: Nazareth Year: Senior Bonk was a twotime all-conference selection in the East Suburban Catholic Conference. The senior guard led the Roadrunners in points (14.4 per game), assists (4.4) and steals (1.9). He finishes his career seventh on the all-time scoring list at Nazareth (866 points) and second on the assists chart (266).

School: Riverside Brookfield Year: Senior Henry was the engine behind RB’s success the last two seasons. The point guard averaged 16.4 points, 4 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.8 steals per game this season. He will continue his career at Division II University of Mary in North Dakota.

School: Fenwick Year: Senior Lattner was the only senior starter on a Fenwick team that still managed to win a Class 3A regional. Lattner capped his three-year varsity career by being named first-team all-Chicago Catholic League.

School: Riverside Brookfield Year: Senior Ljuboja isn’t your ordinary 6-foot-8 center. He has quick feet, a number of moves around the basket and even showed off his shooting range this season. Ljuboja shot 35.7 percent from three-point land to go with his team highs in points (18.1), rebounds (9) and blocks (1.8) per game.

School: Lyons Township Year: Sophomore LT coach Tom Sloan said he thought of Niego as a senior on the court despite being just a sophomore. The young point guard made his varsity debut this season and had no problem stepping up to the level. Niego is a traditional point guard that is already receiving interest from big college programs.

Christopher O’Reilly School: Lyons Township Year: Senior Standing 6-foot-3 and gifted with long arms, O’Reilly was able to get to the rim and finish with ease on a regular basis. The senior became LT’s leader and emerged as a standout player during the second half of the season.

School: Morton Year: Senior A top-level player and student, Perez was a career 1,000-point scorer for the Mustangs. The skilled forward averaged 16.2 points and 7.1 rebounds for Morton. At 6-foot-5, Perez was able to bring up the ball and shoot from range as well as play the power game inside.

School: Morton Year: Sophomore Perez was a double-double machine for Morton in his first full varsity season. Waller’s younger brother averaged 12.2 points and a teamhigh 9.4 rebounds. Weisner will be a key figure for the Mustangs over the next two seasons.

School: Proviso West Year: Senior Roby was part of a balanced Panther team that had a strong second half to the season. At 6-foot-1 and listed as a forward on the Proviso West roster, Roby was still able to be a strong rebounder despite going against taller players on a regular basis.

School: St. Joseph Year: Senior Patty is 6-foot-8 and armed with long arms. Needless to say he was a tough matchup for anyone. If Patty got within 8 feet of the basket, it was usually an automatic two points. The Charger senior was also an elite rebounder and shot blocker.

Paul Turner School: St. Joseph Year: Junior Turner was the Chargers’ only double-digit scorer, averaging about 10 points per game for a very balanced St. Joseph team. The 6-foot-4 guard already has a number of offers from Division I programs and will be one of the most watched seniors next season for a St. Joseph team that will have high expectations.

OH First match: 6 p.m. Thursday, March 21 vs. Morton What to watch: The Bulldogs return eight seniors from last year, including three major contributors, and bring in seven juniors for a big team. Jack Gibson returns at outside hitter after starting every match last season. Mitch Malloy and Jake Fieseler also return at outside hitter, though Fieseler may play libero if RB can get production from its outside without him. “A lot of juniors got experience last year so we definitely expect a lot out of those guys coming

back,” said coach Dan Bonarigo. “It’s been real competitive. I’m going to have high expectations for this season.” Senior middle hitters, 6-foot-4 Tim Thor-Larsen and 6-2 Mike Kosik, are expected to step into starting roles this season. Senior Scott LeBeau and junior Danny Nava will battle for the setter position. Junior Mike Chaney was one of the top hitters for the sophomores last year and should see playing time at outside hitter this spring. The Bulldogs don’t play in a conference so key matchups against West Suburban Conference teams will be crucial in determining seeding for the sectional. Morton, Oak Park-River Forest, Leyden, Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South are all on the schedule as well as invites at Willowbrook and Downers Grove North. “I’d like to think that we have a good goal of winning a regional and competing for a sectional championship again,” Bonarigo said. “We were a couple plays away from winning the sectional championship two years ago against St. Rita and then last year we fell to St. Rita in the regional championship.”

MH First match: 6 p.m. Tuesday at Morton What to watch: Returning setter Marko Kostich will have a big lineup featuring a number of returners to work with so the Lions will look to earn a lot of points at the net. Clayton Smentek and Aidan Spangler, both 6-foot-4, started last year and will be top weapons for Kostich to utilize. Smentek racked up 88 kills last year while Spangler had 30 as a junior. Ryan Temple, 6-6, and Gabe Fisher, 6-7, are a pair of seniors who will look to step into bigger roles as middle hitters this season. Junior outside Michael Dean saw some time on varsity last season and coach Joann Pyritz described him as an allaround player. Seniors defensive specialist Dom Faust and outside Kyle Smuda will also be fighting for playing time.

Shooting woes stifle Chargers in sectional final By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com RIVERSIDE — St. Joseph coach Gene Pingatore saw this happen to his team all season long. The Chargers put up a low shooting percentage and lost a close boys basketball game. This time it was to Orr in the Class 3A sectional final Friday night at Riverside Brookfield. The game was tied after three quarters, but the Spartans pulled away in the fourth to win 50-40. St. Joseph (18-13) saw its season end after shooting just 22 percent from the field and 13 percent from three-point range. “You’re not going to win (shooting like that) and yet we were in the game up until the very end,” Pingatore said. “You know how many games we lost just like this? We shot terrible in games where we lost by eight or five or whatever. The M.O. was there. We self-destructed again. Bad shot selection, not working hard on offense, trying to think that each guy could do it by themselves. You can’t do that.” Orr, the top sectional seed, features a pair of impressive juniors that major colleges

are recruiting in 6-foot-7 guard Tyquone Greer and 6-8 forward Marlon Jones. Their size, agility and speed made it difficult for the Chargers to get quality looks at the basket. Sophomore guards Jordan Ash and Glynn Watson led the Chargers to an early

14-7 lead. Watson got in foul trouble later on and Orr took advantage. Those two along with fellow sophomore Joffrey Brown will play a big part in St. Joe’s success next year. Junior Paul Turner also will be back. Senior starters A.J. Patty (six points, 13 rebounds) and Loren Horton played their last game for the Chargers. “We got a lot of kids coming back,” Pingatore said. “We played without a real strong floor leader and that’s the other thing that has to happen. Usually that’s from the point guard and he’s a sophomore.”

8PREP ROUNDUP BOYS BASKETBALL Fenwick The Friars hung tough with top sectional seed Orr last Wednesday but didn’t have enough for the upset in the Class 3A sectional semifinal at Riverside Brookfield. Orr won 55-46 and went on to win the sectional. Dan Dwyer scored 14 points, and Luke Lattner had 10 in his final game for Fenwick, which finished the season 18-9.

3-POINT SHOWDOWN Lyons Township Senior Connor Onion advanced out of the Schaumburg sectional to compete in the Class 4A preliminary round on Thursday at Peoria’s Carver Arena.

Onion is one of 32 competitors in Class 4A fighting for four spots in the final on Friday.

Fenwick The Friars beat Catholic League-rival Loyola 10-7 to open the season March 4.

Nazareth John Bonk made 10 three-pointers on Friday to qualify for the state competition as the top qualifier out of the Riverside Brookfield sectional.

Riverside Brookfield The Bulldogs opened the season 0-6. RB lost to Morton (9-8) and York (21-9) before going 0-4 at the Stagg Tournament over the weekend. The Bulldogs lost another one-goal match to Morton, 8-7 this time, in the tournament.

LEGAL NOTICE / PUBLIC NOTICE NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING RESIDENTIAL AGGREGATION FOR ELECTRIC RATES VILLAGE OF HODGKINS Public Hearings will be held on March 27, 2013, at 6:00 p.m. and April 8, 2013, at 6:30 p.m. The hearings will be held in the Village Hall Board Room, located at 8990 Lyons Street, Hodgkins, IL 60525. A referendum is scheduled for April 9, 2013 asking voters to authorize the Village of Hodgkins to adopt an Ordinance and Governance Plan to aggregate electrical loads for residential and small commercial customers within the corporate limits of the Village as an opt out program. Under the opt-out program, the Village would procure competitive pricing on behalf of eligible accounts. Upon award of the bid to the alternative power company, all applicable accounts would be moved to the alternative electric supplier. However, individual customers would have the option to opt-out of the aggregation for whatever reason. 1.3 BID SUBMITTAL AND OPENING A. Owner will receive sealed lump sum bids until the bid time and date at the location given below. Deposits are not refundable. B. Successful bidder shall begin the Work on receipt of the Notice to Proceed and shall complete the Work within the Contract Time. 1.8 BIDDER'S QUALIFICATIONS A. Bidders must be properly licensed under the laws governing their respective trades and be able to obtain insurance and bonds required for the Work. B. The Contractor bidding the project shall be actively engaged in work of the nature of the project described, and have adequate specialized men and machines to do the work. Each bidder shall submit with his proposal a list of no less than ten (10) different construction projects that have been completed within the last five years that relate to the type of work specified. C. The Contractor bidding the project shall submit qualifications in the form of AIA document A305 "Contractor's Qualification Statement". 1.9 BID STIPULATIONS A. Bidders are specifically advised that The Scottish Home Boiler Replacement project is a partially/fully federally funded project. As such, all bidders are required to be in full compliance with the Davis-Bacon Act (40 U.S.C. Sections 276-276a-5), Department of Labor Regulations (29 CFR, All Parts), Copeland "Anti-Kickback Act" (18 U.S.C. Section 874), Contract Work Hours and Safety Standards At (40 U.S.C. Sections 327-333), and the Equal Employment Opportunity for Community Development Block Grants. An explanation of the applicable federal requirements mentioned is provide as part of the Project Manual under "Special Provisions for Federally-Funded Projects". B. Within ten (10) days after notification of award of contract, the successful Contractor shall furnish a Performance Bond, separate Labor and Material Payment Bond, and Insurance in a form acceptable to Owner. The Performance Bond shall be in the amount of 100 percent of the contract. The performance bond will become a part of the contract. C. The failure of the successful bidder to enter into contract and supply the required bond and Certificates of Insurance within ten (10) days after the prescribed forms are presented for signature, or within such extended period as the Owner may grant, shall constitute a default. D. The Owner reserves the right to accept or reject any or all bids, to waive any informalities and irregularities in any bid, or to make awards in the best interests of the Owner. The Owner also reserves the right to award a partial amount of the Work rather than the entire amount. E. All bids submitted shall be valid for a period of at least sixty days from date of bid opening; the only alterations which will be allowed will be those approved by the Owner.
