Rob and Lori Chana, of Clarendon Hills, talk about their son, Cameron, during a donor remembrance ceremony March 6 in the Calandra Chapel at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital. Cameron, a cornea and organ donor, was killed in a vehicle accident in 2009.

New life, new hope

“No, I don’t. I usually don’t do anything, but I have a friend who has a birthday on St. Patrick’s Day so sometimes we celebrate that.” Janet Roxworthy Hinsdale

Local families honored during organ donor remembrance ceremony By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com

HINSDALE — Lori Chana was ready with a stethoscope when she first met Nate Dyer in a restaurant. He opened his arms to her as she anxiously waited to hear the heartbeat she’d been missing for six months. It wasn’t his heart she was listening to, though — it was her son’s. “My hope was to hear Cam’s heartbeat again because when you describe a person, you describe their heart,” Lori said to a crowd at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital last week. “Whenever I get to see Nate, I get to hear Cameron’s heart.” Lori and her husband, Rob, of Clarendon Hills were just a few of the speakers during an organ donor re-

membrance ceremony in the Calandra Chapel on March 6. Adventist Midwest Health partnered with the Illinois Eye-Bank for the ceremony, which honored and remembered donors, donor families and recipients. The Chanas became a donor family in 2009 when their 22-year-old son, Cameron, died in a bus accident while on a fraternity outing. “I guess to start out, I’d like to say I’m glad to be here to talk to you, but to be real honest, I hate that we are here,” Rob Chana said. “If you are a donor family, you know the exact second your life changes forever.” This was not the first time the couple spoke during a donor event, but Lori said it never gets any easier. “It still feels like it was yesterday,” she said. “I still

wait for him to come through the door.” Mary Schlereth, professional education coordinator at Illinois Eye-Bank, also became a donor family when her boyfriend was killed in a motorcycle accident nine years ago. “You think about all the people that have come into your life since the loss of your loved one, and you can’t help but feel blessed because you know you’ve helped so many people,” Schlereth said. Lori and Rob Chana first

met 59-year-old Dyer of Chicago six months after Cameron’s donation. He now calls them “Mom” and “Dad.” From Cameron’s total organ donations, he saved five lives, restored sight in two others and was able to give away 52 different tissues. More and more people are now becoming donors, Schlereth said. In 2011, there were 11 cornea donors from Adventist Hinsdale, with that number growing to 33 last year. “I think the most important thing is for people to be educated about what it means to be an eye, organ and tissue donor,” Schlereth said. “Then you have to have that conversation with your family members and share your decision to be a donor so if something tragic were to happen, your family already knows what your wishes are.”

“No, not this year. Nothing exciting.” Nicole Kumskis Hinsdale

Hinsdale attorney strides to make difference in people’s lives By DANNY CIAMPRONE

About Jeff Kroll

dciamprone@shawmedia.com HINSDALE — Plaintiff Attorney Jeff Kroll often involves himself with tough, emotional cases. When he’s able to help people, his job is most rewarding. “Whether it’s the death of a child, the death of a spouse, paralysis; there are so many things that have really touched me and impacted me,” Kroll said. Kroll has joined Salvi, Schostok & Pritchard P.C. after having his own practice and working with Chicago’s Clifford Law Offices. He was the youngest personal injury lawyer selected for inclusion in The Best Lawyers of America 2011, 2012 and 2013.

Age: 49 Residence: Hinsdale Family: Wife and two children Education: DePaul University and Marist High School Activities: Coaching sports teams, playing golf

“Whether it’s the death of a child, the death of a spouse, paralysis; there are so many things that have really touched me and impacted me.” Jeff Kroll

The Hinsdale resident has been practicing law for years, focusing in the areas of medical malpractice, personal injury and wrongful death cases. Kroll isn’t representing corporations or entities, but individuals. As a result, he gets to know families quite well and becomes a bigger part of their lives besides just

plaintiff attorney having the attorney-client relationship — something he said for him was even hard to explain. “I have gone to several clients’ weddings because you’re such an active part of their life with the litigation, and it’s almost like you’re part of their family,” he said.

Kroll said he has secured millions of dollars in verdicts and settlements on behalf of his clients, but it’s his blue-collar background that gives him the confidence to take on some of the largest corporations in court. “I can feel comfortable sitting across from the truck driver as much as I do sitting across from the CEO of a large corporation,” he said. Kroll grew up on the South Side of Chicago in Brighton Park, not too far from Comiskey Park. His mom was a bank teller and his dad was a truck driver. His childhood and time in law school gave him the best of both worlds, as well as leg up when it comes to juries. “Each jury is different,”

he said. “They come from different backgrounds, they have different biases, they’ve got different views on life and you have to connect with all 12.” That’s part of the fun of being in court, which Kroll said is his favorite part about being an attorney. “I’ve played sports my entire life and I love and thrive on the competition,” he said. While the hours can be long, he finds his work fulfilling. “Someone once told me, ‘Find something you don’t do well and don’t do it,’” he said. “I think the most successful people are the ones who enjoy what they’re doing, they’re passionate about it and they work hard.”

CLARENDON HILLS — A basketball phenom from unincorporated Downers Grove who had reportedly committed to Seton Hall was charged with felony robbery last week. Jerron Wilbut, 19, of the 16W600 block of Mockingbird Lane, was charged with two other men March 7 after police said they robbed a ju- Jerron venile in Claren- Wilbut don Hills. Wilbut graduated last year from Downers Grove South High School. According to the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office, Wilbut as well as Kelechukwu Akub, 20, of Romeoville, and Leverenzel Booth, 18, of Darien, made plans to meet with the juvenile about 4 p.m. March 7 in unincorporated Clarendon Hills. “Akuba, Booth and Wilbut, with intentions of robbing the juvenile, let the victim into the vehicle and displayed what was believed to be handgun, robbed him of his currency and property, then released the victim from the vehicle and left the scene,” according to a statement from the sheriff’s office. The three suspects were located shortly after and were arrested, according to the sheriff’s office. Investigators determined that they did not use an actual firearm in the alleged robbery, but rather an item that resembled a handgun, sheriff’s office spokeswoman Dawn Domrose said. Earlier this week, all three men were still being held at DuPage County Jail on $10,000 bond. Wilbut graduated from Downers Grove South in 2012 after three years on the varsity basketball squad. His senior year, the 6-foot-3 guard averaged 13.5 points per game and was considered a candidate for Mr. Basketball Illinois. After graduating, he went to St. John’s Northwest Military Academy, and he reportedly verbally committed to Seton Hall for the coming year.

Hundreds of pages of documents were released Tuesday by the Diocese of Joliet offering new details on the accusations against 15 priests — one of whom served in Hinsdale — accused of sexual misconduct with minors. The accusations themselves are not new, but the personnel files show — for the first time, in many cases — corroborating information and background on the priests, according to the attorneys reviewing the documents. A Will County court in January ordered the documents be released in an ongoing lawsuit against the diocese — ruling that public interest outweighs the privacy rights of the priest or the diocese. The documents were made available to plaintiffs

on Tuesday, but there will be a slight delay before they will be published, as lawyers comb through to redact the names of victims. Among the accused are several priests who served in the western suburbs, including: •฀ Frederick฀ Lenczycki,฀ who was sentenced to five years in prison after he was accused of molesting nine altar boys at St. Isaac Jogues in Hinsdale; •฀ Leonardo฀ Mateo,฀ now฀ deceased, but who in 1984 returned to the Philippines when he was accused of molesting boys at Immaculate Conception in Elmhurst; •฀ Michael฀ Gibbney,฀ accused of molesting a boy at Mary฀ Queen฀ of฀ Heaven฀ parish in Elmhurst and at St. Francis฀ of฀ Assisi฀ in฀ Bolingbrook. Final plans discussed for Oak Street Bridge reconstruction By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com HINSDALE — Final plans for the Oak Street Bridge reconstruction were laid out for the public on Tuesday during the final public hearing on the project. The first phase — in which engineering firm Clark-Dietz collected and analyzed data and developed alternatives — is nearly complete. Because the project is being administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation, there are certain regulations the village and

engineering firm has to follow, said Allen Staron, a project manager with the firm. First, a new bridge must provide for 23 feet, four inches of clearance between the top of the rail and the bottom of the structure. The second requirement is it must be two lanes. “The existing bridge clearance is about 20 feet, so the new bridge is about three feet higher,” Staron said. It also is an IDOT requirement to provide travel lanes that are 14-feet wide when there is shared use of vehi-

cles and bicycles. The current lane width on the bridge varies from about 12- to 12.5feet wide, so the new bridge will be 20 feet wider and 50 feet longer with two travel lanes and sidewalks on both sides. The current bridge only has a walkway on one side. The new bridge also will be three feet higher and as a result, the pavement on both sides of the new bridge will be raised and it includes a more gradual slope. bridge and in the intersections north and south of it. One of the changes will be a four-way stop at the intersection of Oak Street and Chicago Avenue instead of the current two-way stop. Hinsdale resident Will Johns said he was concerned about the potential dramatic change in traffic flow, but village officials said they would monitor and implement traffic control where needed. “Our goal is to not have an increase in traffic crossing the bridge,” said Hinsdale Police Chief Bradley Bloom. “Our goal is to implement traffic-calming solutions if that traffic going over the bridge increases.” On the east side of Oak Street along Highland Park there also will be a retaining wall extending about 150 feet south of the new bridge and will vary from 3- to 12-feet

high, something that raised concern for resident Steve Cashman. “I really think if we’re looking at it from the southeast, it really changes the entire area and can be very brutal,” Cashman said. “It’s going to look like a concrete viaduct in the city.” However, officials said the retaining wall would not be a single sheet, and plans for construction will be more laid out in the second phase. The first phase is expected to be completed by the middle of this year, with the plan submitted to IDOT and the Federal Highway Administration for final approval. The second phase is expected to be completed in 2014, with construction — the third phase — beginning in 2015. Staron said the estimated $10- to $13-million bridge would take 12 to 15 months to complete.

HINSDALE — As negotiations to consolidate the Clarendon Hills and Hinsdale police departments recently came to an end, Hinsdale Police Chief Bradley Bloom expressed his discouragement. Bloom thought both Clarendon Hills and Hinsdale were going into consolidation at the perfect time — doing it without any layoffs and having proper funding before talks fell through. “I’m not sure if we’re ever going to have this opportunity again and I think that consolidation is where we’ll be eventually, but I’m not sure we’re going to have the opportunity to have the funding and to have the time to be able to do it without layoffs sometime in the future,” Bloom said. The main hurdle facing consolidation negotiations was Social Security benefits received by Clarendon Hills police officers, but not Hinsdale officers. Bloom said he knew of the issue at the start of negotiations, but didn’t see it as the pitfall. “I thought it would be something we could address in negotiations, but I found out after all the research was done that it was something that couldn’t be addressed to the satisfaction of the Clarendon Hills officers,” he said.

The consolidation was estimated to bring an annual savings of $700,000 to $800,000 between the two municipalities. Now that negotiations have ended, Bloom said the department would look for more ways to reduce costs, but the department has taken significant steps already, including outsourcing its 911 center, bringing in volunteers and reducing the number of police officers by three since 2008. “I’m not sure if there are any other areas we can cut,” Bloom said. “The only thing left is to continue to research ways that we can share services to reduce expenses, but I think we’ve been pretty innovative in identifying areas up to this point where we can save.” Bloom said in the mid1980s, communities were given the option to opt out of Social Security, which it did along with several other departments because it was covered by a government pension. Clarendon Hills opted to stay in and continue to contribute to Social Security. “It’s disappointing that we’ve run into a brick wall on an issue that I consider somewhat minor and never considered this would be the issue that derailed us,” Bloom said. “I thought the time was right. I think the communities are very similar demographically and match up very well.”

Kitchens for the Average Joe & Jane Have you put off doing your kitchen long enough? Is this the year you have vowed to do something with your cabinets? Have the horror stories of kitchen remodeling made you afraid to even think about it? With prices approaching and surpassing $100,000 for full kitchen remodeling, it is no wonder the Average Joe and Jane feel a little overwhelmed. Enter Kitchen Tune-Up! This locally owned (Downers Grove) National Franchise has been offering minor kitchen remodels for 19 years. Marty Ceranec, the owner, has won numerous awards from KTU for Sales, Customer Service, and Creativity. He received the highest award in 2000 when he won National Franchise of the Year and in addition, is a two time Angies List Super Service Award Winner. We offer Kitchen Solutions for Any Budget. “I think some people get sticker shock when they look at the price of redoing an entire kitchen and are overwhelmed. We work with clients every day who have the same anxieties,” says Marty. KTU can provide anything from the Signature Kitchen Tune-Up to a full blown design and remodel. “The bulk of our work last year was in refacing and door replacement. Door replacement doesn’t change the color, but replaces old particle board doors with new solid raised panel doors utilizing concealed hinges. Refacing, on the other hand, enables one to change their oak cabinets to maple cabinets without buying all new cabinetry,” said Marty. “These two options also save landfill space because we are saving the boxes.” Why have they been so successful? “I think it’s because we follow our trust points (below). Simple things like showing up on time and returning phone calls which is often lacking in the remodeling industry. I have chosen to keep the business small so I am involved in every job with my three long time installers. By doing this we have become well known as experts in minor kitchen remodeling.” Kitchen Tune-Up also offers cabinetry upgrades such as glass doors, tipout trays, soft-closing dovetail drawers, and full extension rollouts as well as counters in laminate, solid surfaces, granite and quartz (Cambria) “The Best Counter Top Around.” When questioned about any regrets, Marty replies, “We often get calls to update the kitchen when the owner is ready to sell. We always wonder why they didn’t do it earlier so they could have enjoyed it sooner.”

HINSDALE — Amanda Vogel walked into the first “Makers Movement” class at Nurturing Wisdom Academy, set down a cardboard box and asked the students what they saw. Of course everyone said a cardboard box, but as the day evolved, the cardboard box was soon being looked at as a doll house, or a Hot Wheels ramp, which is exactly what Vogel wanted. She wanted her students to see what they could make out of the everyday item. “It’s not just doing a project where you follow the instructions, but rather looking at the world and going, ‘What can I make it do?’” said Vogel, who is vice president of Nurturing Wisdom Academy and one of the teachers for Makers Movement. Makers Movement is an extracurricular class centralized around creativity for students in grades two through eight. Kids can make anything from robots to circuit

boards to forts, but the main idea is to just use imagination and be as creative as possible. “What it’s really about is being able to look at everyday things and making them do what you want to make you understand the world better,” she said. “It makes you be able to feel, not necessarily controlling your universe, but having more power over your world.” Vogel said the class, which to her was the most exciting thing they’ve started aside from the school itself, came about after she surveyed the students to find out what kind of afterschool clubs they would be interested in. “They loved the projects that are a part of our curriculum and they were looking for ways to do more of that kind of stuff, maybe without so much of the writing requirements that come when you do it as a school project,” she said. “But they really liked exploring things and getting into engineering with what they were making.” At the first club meeting

ZIMBABWE DIAMONDS

Two events marked the end of February, the first drew world attention, the second was little noticed. The first, of course, was Pope Benedict XVI’s abdication; the second was Robert Mugabe’s 89th birthday - two events that underscore the difference between responsibility and denial. As you probably know, Pope Benedict was moved to abdicate by his fear that at age 85 he was no longer able to fully discharge his responsibilities as leader of one of the world’s great faiths. On the other hand, Mugabe, chief executive of Zimbabwe for the last 33 years, has made it clear that he has no intention of stepping down. Most will see Benedict’s decision as positive; while those of us who follow events in Zimbabwe can only see Mugabe’s continuation in power as a tragedy for the people of that country.

Alan Martin, research director of Partnership Africa Canada, recently observed of those sanctioned, “The sanction list is a pretty small one, and it’s very targeted. It is limited to people who are accused of serious human rights abuses or corruption. It’s a pretty hard process to get on that list. It’s not something that’s done willynilly. Most of these people are known criminals or murderers.” And it is Marange diamonds that have brought affairs in Zimbabwe sharply into focus in the jewelry business. In short, the Marange mines are owned and operated, using coercively exploited labor, by the “criminals and murderers” Alan Martin spoke of; and they do so with the tacit consent of Mugabe’s government.

If you’re not acute to Zimbabwean affairs, let me bring you up to speed. In the 1960s a white dominated country, Rhodesia, came into being to the north of the Republic of South Africa. The former colonial power, Britain, the U.S. and the U.N. refused to recognize the new country, demanding voting rights for its black African majority. The black majority took direct action; and a civil war of more than a decade’s duration erupted in the country. When, in 1980, the smoke cleared, Mugabe emerged as the newly anointed Zimbabwe’s first prime minister, and after 1987, the country’s president. To refer to him as the nation’s ‘ruler’ is not unwarranted; and the ensuing slide into economic disaster as the result of corrupt and coercive politics only underscore’s Lord Acton’s observation that, “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men.” So it has been with Mugabe.

Our annual end of year sale and your ‘Savin’ O’ the Green*!

The CIA World Fact Book addresses the current situation in Zimbabwe as follows. “Zimbabwe is a source, transit, and destination country for men, women, and children trafficked for the purposes of forced labor and sexual exploitation; some victims of forced prostitution are subsequently transported across the border to South Africa where they suffer continued exploitation; Zimbabwean men, women, and children are subjected to forced labor in agriculture and domestic service in rural areas, as well as domestic servitude and sex trafficking in cities and towns; children are also utilized in the commission of illegal activities, including gambling and drug smuggling. The Government of Zimbabwe does not fully comply with the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking and is not making significant efforts to do so; the government did not report investigations, prosecutions, or convictions of trafficking cases and continued to rely on an international organization to provide law enforcement training, coordinate victim care and repatriation, and lead prevention efforts.” For the U.S. Government and the European Union these behaviors have raised a cautionary flag. In 2003 both the U.S. and the E.U. imposed trade sanctions on Zimbabwe; but not on the country as a whole so much as on particular individuals - who just happen to be ‘important’ Mugabe supporters.

Now through March 30, 2013. *Save up to 50%. Financing available!

While the governments of most African states (many of which have earned, in varying degrees, international opprobrium) officially view American and European sanctions as ‘illegal’, the sanctions are currently limiting the shipment of Marange ‘blood diamonds’ into international trade. Though some in the World Diamond Council argue that, as the important shippers won’t ship Marange diamonds, the sanctions actually make tracking them more difficult, Jewelers of America (an important trade organization) supports the sanctions; and this is telling. Mugabe may be in denial about the character of his government and its supporters, but the thugs in his entourage are so offensive to the U.S. and E.U. jewelry communities that the sanctions will likely stay in force until significant reforms have ousted Mugabe’s thug supporters from their privileged bastions of power. Needless to say, I’m proud of our government’s position; and our premier diamond brand, Hearts On Fire, is exclusively sourced from DeBeers - now one of the ‘good guys’. The Government of Botswana (well regarded for its democratic character – check it out in the CIA World Fact Book) is both an important share holder in DeBeers and the source of about half of its diamonds. This means our diamonds have been mined with the honest, fairly paid labor deserved by an earnest token of your love. So check us out on the web at hurstsberwynjewelers.com, then phone us at 708.788.0880 for an appointment with us – the uncommon jeweler and your best source for beautiful diamonds. P.S. If you have diamonds, broken or unworn pieces of jewelry that you would like to sell, come in and we’ll help you establish their market value; perhaps, we’ll make the best offer to buy them.

Restaurant reviews

Parkers’ Restaurant still reeling them in After often driving past Parkers’ Restaurant & Bar in Downers Grove, a friend and I stepped inside for a weekday lunch and discovered why the parking lot is so frequently packed. We received a warm welcome at the entry, and were given our choice of seating: the dining room or the clublike lounge with a wine-rack wall, old-school red leather chairs and booths, and grand piano for the live evening entertainment. We opted for a table near the granite-surrounded fireplace in the elegant dining room, where decorative touches range from culinary-inspired paintings to sumptuous displays of breads off the open kitchen separated from diners by a turquoise mosaic wall. To begin the meal, two varieties of bread and crispy flatbread were served with whipped butter and freshly prepared hummus. The restaurant stresses its devotion to foods from the American farmer and fisherman, so I ordered grilled Regal

Springs Tilapia ($12) served with plain mashed potatoes, green beans and an herb-infused, sun-dried tomato garnish to spice up the mild fish. My friend raved about the chef’s pick called Amish Chicken “Mac and Cheese,” noting, “Any meal starts well when it has a slice of bacon on top. The rich cheese sauce did not overpower the dish, and you could taste the other ingredients.” The entree ($14) was prepared with cavatappi pasta, Amish chicken, asparagus, smoked gouda and Applewood smoked bacon. My dining companion appreciated the bite-size morsels of chicken incorporated throughout the dish, as opposed to so many meals where slices are dropped on top like an afterthought. Other enticing options include Lobster Bisque ($9.50); Surf, Surf & Turf Sliders ($15), featuring a Mini Maryland Crab Cake, Tuna Burger and Certified Angus Beef with Tillamook Cheddar Cheeseburger; and Herb Crusted

Listening to community WCKG radio dials in local focus at AM 1530 By ALLISON HORNE msleditorial@shawmedia.com Don’t touch that dial, folks, because there’s a new show in town. It may have been around since 1974, but the station formerly known as WJJG now is getting a facelift, starting with some famous call letters: WCKG. When General Manager Matt Dubiel, formerly of Downers Grove, took over the Elmhurst station in October 2011, he set out to develop a fresh direction. With more than 2.8 million people within the WCKG AM 1530 signal, and 30,000 online listeners per month, Dubiel realized

the station had a niche it needed to focus on — the suburbs. With WCKG one of the few stations based inside DuPage County, Dubiel sees its advantages: location, listeners and a need for something local and relevant. Dubiel is still fine-tuning the big changes. From a possible new location to brand new shows, he says WCKG aims to cater to area businesses and suburban listeners.

What’s new for WCKG? Changing the call letters shined up the station, but there are a couple of things that are key for us. We got all new equipment that improves the quality of the station, and we put it at full power. We weren’t operating

Japanese Eggplant ($14; $18 at dinner) with sun-dried and basil gnocchi, arugula, portobellas, spinach and Parmigiano-Reggiano. Also highlighted is pizza Napoletana ($10.50 to $15), claiming Italian certification as the real deal. The dinner menu has such offerings as Lake Superior Whitefish Wellington ($23), with shiitake mushrooms, leeks, pine nuts, lemon beurre blanc in puff pastry; and Charcoal Grilled Maple Leaf Farms Duck Breast and Confit Leg ($26), with wild rice blend, figs and honey. Burgers ($12 to $14) are available at lunch and dinner, which features a variety of salads including

Roasted Heirloom Beet Salad ($8), with mesclun greens, quinoa, candied walnuts, cranberries, feta and apple cider vinaigrette. We couldn’t resist a sweet finish to lunch. Our attentive server, who recommended the Callebaut Chocolate Cake ($7) served warm with crème anglaise and berries, explained, “Callebaut is the type of Belgian chocolate in the dessert. It’s rich with a gooey center.” We opted for the Vermont Maple Sugar Cotton Candy ($4), nostalgic fun for a group looking to share a sweet tidbit. “It certainly grabs the attention of the people around you,” said my friend, as the

He’s someone people know. He lets us get our feet off the ground. We’re trying to add more local shows, like ‘The Geoff Pinkus Show.’ He’s live and local from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. (weekdays). The next phase of programming lineup changes is to add another show.

Find the station

What are you trying to do and what’s next? We’re working on finding a home for the studios in a main street, high traffic, suburban area so people can see, hear and experience the magic of radio in a community way. It would be right in the heart of the action. We’re searching for a robust suburban downtown or suburban

shopping area to plant our broadcast studios, with windows to the world just like WGN does in downtown Chicago. Towns that have a nice downtown area like Downers Grove … would be great. And we will have podcasting and video casting studios for local businesses and the public to join in. I’ve narrowed it down to the top three, but if someone can convince me that there’s a better place to be, or a business, community or local government wants to work with us, I’m all ears. We’re not stopping there. My goal for the entire station is to be … focused on what

is going on locally, and the people that are living in the suburbs. The city is great, but what’s going on with (Mayor) Emanuel and what’s going on with the parking meters isn’t as important to us in the suburbs. We are devoting a week to every suburb in our coverage area, where we shine the light on the community — Carol Stream this week, Glen Ellyn the week of March 18 and West Chicago the week of March 25.

How has Geoff Pinkus’ new show been going? It’s been great. Radio used to be gauged on whether or not the phone was ringing, but that was before the Internet and Twitter and Facebook. Geoff is really great with interacting on social media, and the phones have been ringing too. It’s like the saying, ‘If you build it, they will come.’

Bolingbrook senior Ben Moore averaged a team-best 16.5 points per game this season.

BOLINGBROOK — He could do things most players couldn’t. He could post up in the paint, pull up for a mid-range jumper, or drive the lane and finish with a thunderous dunk. Rob Brost has said Ben Moore is the best player he’s coached, but Moore won’t have any of it. For the Bolingbrook senior, the team’s accomplishments are a much higher priority than personal accolades. He easily learned humility and took the lesson to heart. He constantly deflected praise to his teammates and let others talk about his skills as a player. “He affected the game in so many ways, and it goes beyond what he does on the floor,” Brost said. “He does all the right things off the floor, too, and he is so humble. There is no arrogance, and that’s rare in a player of his caliber.” “My family taught me that,” Moore said. “My parents taught me about being humble.” Though Moore would never discus his skills — even after games like he had against Lincoln-Way Central (24 points, 14 rebounds, five blocks), Rich South (23 points, 10 rebounds, four blocks, four assists) or Lemont in the playoffs (10 points, five rebounds, five assists) — Brost lauded them. “He has the skill set of wing. He’s a matchup nightmare for anybody because he can handle the ball so well,” the coach said. “He can really handle the ball. He very skilled in and around the basket, but what got him 25-plus scholarship offers was his ability to handle the ball on the perimeter and break people down off the dribble.” Brost believes part of Moore’s humility stems from the fact he gained recognition a little later than many elite players. He had a few scholarship offers by the end of his junior season, but major college coaches flocked after he had a

I tried to help the team win a few games, but I have to give credit to my teammates because I could never do it alone. I have to thank my family, the coaching staff, my teammates and everybody who supported the team throughout the season.” Moore’s high school career is over, but he won’t waste much time getting ready for his college career at SMU. He plans to get back in the gym soon to work on his jumpshot and fundamentals, and he also wants to get in the weight room in order to add some bulk to his 6-foot-8 frame. “He’s all-around one of the best kids you could meet — on the floor, in the classroom, in the hallways at school and in the community,” Brost said. “He’s a well-rounded kid and he’s fun to be around because he’s such a good person.”

ALL-AREA BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM | 2012-13

Juozas Balciunas School: Lemont Year: Senior After transferring from St. Joseph, this guard had quite the impact in his two years on the court for Lemont. Helping to lead the Indians to 48 wins over that span, Balciunas saved his best for last. This winter, the senior averaged a team-high 19.9 points per game to go along with 5.0 assists, 3.2 rebounds and 3.2 steals per outing.

Robert Mara School: Downers Grove South Year: Senior A stalwart at both ends of the floor for the Mustangs, Mara’s post play was a nice complement to the guard play of Danny Spinuzza and Jordan Cannon. The West Suburban Gold all-conference selection averaged a double-double with 10 points and 10.5 rebounds per game and was third on the team at 72 percent from the free throw line.

Pat McInerney

Ben Moore

School: Benet Year: Senior A four-year varsity player for the Redwings, the 6-foot-5 McInerney did it all. Ostensibly a forward, he often brought the ball down the court for Benet and was just as deadly from outside the paint as in it. The East Suburban Catholic all-conference selection averaged 12.5 points and 11 rebounds per game and will play baseball at Illinois.

School: Bolingbrook Year: Senior After committing to SMU before the season, a lot was expected of Moore this winter. He delivered. A force in the paint who was able to create on his own off the dribble, Moore averaged a teambest 16.5 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks per game. SouthWest Suburban Blue all-conference, he is also an all-state nominee and finalist for Illinois Mr. Basketball.

Nick Norton

Larry Motuzis

Prentiss Nixon

School: Hinsdale South Year: Junior Probably the Hornets most consistent player at both ends of the floor this winter, Motuzis finished as the team’s leading scorer at 11.9 points per game and got to that level by hitting both from the paint (43 percent) and from long range (38 percent). The West Suburban Gold all-conference pick also grabbed 2.5 rebounds per game.

School: Bolingbrook Year: Sophomore Already on the radar of several college programs throughout the country before the season started, Nixon only added to his reputation by averaging 14.5 points, four rebounds and three assists per game. Named to the all-tournament team at Joliet West’s Thanksgiving tourney, he was also SouthWest Suburban Blue all-conference.

School: Downers Grove North Year: Senior An athletic guard, Norton could slice to the basket seemingly at will but also brought a smooth long-range stroke to the floor. He scored more than one-third of the Trojans’ points this season, averaging 15.5 points per game. The West Suburban Silver all-conference selection also led the team with 5.5 rebounds per game.

Honorable mention Benet: Jack Euritt, Eddie Eshoo, Robert Haemmerle, Jack Toner

Sean O’Mara

Brian Owens

Jean Pietrzak

School: Benet Year: Junior Teams seemed to relish getting physical with the 6-foot-9 O’Mara, and he had no problem absorbing the blows and hurting teams with his play. The East Suburban Catholic all-conference selection averaged 16 points and eight rebounds per game, and also affected games with his passing out of the post.

School: Hinsdale Central Year: Senior The Red Devils’ primary ball-handler, Owens was more than just a distributor (though he did lead the team with 102 assists). The West Suburban Silver all-conference and multiple all-academic honoree averaged 11 points per game while shooting 52 percent from inside the arc, 41 percent beyond it and 81 percent at the free throw line.

School: Westmont Year: Senior A three-year varsity player for the Sentinels, Pietrzak was a physical 6-foot-5 forward with a variety of post moves yet also able to extend the defense with his range. He averaged a teamhigh 17.8 points and 8.7 rebounds per game while shooting 55 percent from the field, and the Interstate Eight all-conference selection also nailed 16 three-pointers.

Matt Rafferty

Lamont Ross

School: Hinsdale Central Year: Sophomore The only underclassman on the Red Devils’ roster, Rafferty was a centerpiece at both ends of the floor. The 6-foot-7 forward led the team with averages of 15.4 points and 10.6 rebounds per game, and he also averaged better than two blocks and two assists per contest. He was named West Suburban Silver all-conference.

School: Lisle Year: Senior A transfer from Romeoville, Ross had an immediate impact for the Lions. His athleticism made him tough to handle near the rim, but he also displayed solid mid- and longrange games on the way to earning Interstate Eight all-conference honors after averaging 10.4 points and 6.1 rebounds per game.

Mike Wisz School: Lemont Year: Junior Coming off a solid sophomore campaign for the Indians, this sharp-shooting forward took his game to a new level this winter. Second on the team in scoring with his 14.9 points per game average, Wisz made 64 three-pointers on the year. He also notched 4.6 rebounds and 2.7 steals per contest.

Country Financial Three-Point Showdown. Hinsdale South’s Joe George’s senior basketball season isn’t over quite yet. Before last Friday’s Class 4A Bolingbrook sectional championship game, George sank eight three-pointers to earn a state berth in the Three-point Showdown. Preliminary rounds of the state contest were set to take place Thursday, with the

Promising newcomers: Jake Dorrance jr. MH Austin Mantey so. MH What to watch: The Hornets took their lumps last year. Part of it was playing a tough schedule, and part of it was playing a young squad with two sophomore starters and two junior starters. The 2012 season wasn’t much fun because of it, but 2013 is shaping up to be much better. “Dylan (Sarocco), Shaun (Dulleck) and Sean (Miller) were varsity starters last year, and Robbie Mead has been a varsity starter for three years,” coach Billson Rasavongxay said. “So we’re returning four varsity starters. Last year was tough because we had such a young team in terms of varsity experience.” Rasavongxay said that Mead will be a major component to what the Hornets do. He also said he knows other teams know that Mead is South’s go-to player, but opponents who key too much on taking Mead out of the match will be taking a risk. “We’re going to move him around as much as possible, and he’s still good enough to affect the game,” the coach said. Teams paying too much attention to Mead will encounter Dulleck and Miller, as well as middles Jake Dorrance and Austin Mantey, ready to swing away. And there should be plenty of balls to go around with Sarocco setting in a 6-2 attack that will have two

setters on the floor at the same time. “Our offensive system is flexible and I think we’re going to be able to exploit some of our other strengths on offense,” Rasavongxay said. South will start the season against defending West Suburban Silver champ Glenbard West. The Hornets will also compete in tournaments at Glenbard East,

Wheaton Warrenville South and Richards, all steps toward achieving one of Rasavongxay’s primary goals. “My ultimate goal is to compete for conference and get a regional title,” he said. “I know Downers Grove South is stacked in conference, and we’re usually in one of the toughest sectionals in the state, but I think those are realistic goals for us.”

over Lincoln-Way East. Sarah Pircon scored four times, Liza Gross scored twice, and Alden Leader had two assists while making nine saves in net in the victory. Pircon scored five times, including all four goals in the second half, against St. Charles North, but the North Stars won 8-7 with three goals in the fourth quarter. Central started the tourna-

ment with an 11-6 win over Hoffman Estates.

GIRLS INDOOR TRACK Hinsdale Central The Red Devils had seven event wins and another 12 runner-up showings as they scored 119 points to win their own quad meet Saturday against Evanston, Argo and Grayslake North. Central finished 1-2 in seven events to pull away for the win.

Nickname: Red Devils Coach: Alan McCloud Top returners: Danny Flynn sr. OH David Whinery sr. OH Steven Yarbrough sr. OH Promising newcomers: Grant Kelly jr. MH Kurt McConnell so. MH Kian Peterson so. S Devin Steuck jr. S What to watch: There’s a new look on the bench as lower-level coach Alan McCloud steps in on an interim basis for Kelly Watson, who is out on maternity leave. The new look on the bench mirrors a new look on the floor. “We have just a few seniors that were on the team last year and this year’s team is more juniors and sophomores, so it’s going to be a pretty new team,” McCloud said. Senior outside hitters Danny Flynn and David Whinery bring back the most experience for the Red Devils. Classmates John Hardek, Sean O’Neill and Steven Yarbrough were with the varsity team last year but did not see as much playing time as Flynn and Whinery. Senior Rigas Pappas is back playing volleyball after sitting out the last two years. “We’re looking for Danny and David to step up and be leaders on and off the floor because of their experience,” McCloud said. Devin Steuck and Kian Peter-

son will handle the setting duties according to McCloud, and the Red Devils might use one or the other, or both. “They’re looking pretty good so far,” the coach said. “It’s such a crucial position and because neither one has set at the varsity level before, it’s kind of a trial by fire. They’ve set at the lower levels, but now they’re going to be asked to run more complex stuff.” Elsewhere, new faces will move into new places. Hardek set a little bit last year but could slide over as a right side hitter. Grant Kelly and Kurt McConnell are 6-foot-4 middle hitters, though roles could change for any player as the season unfolds. “Because so many people are new to the varsity level and guys don’t necessarily have that experience, things are pretty open right now,” McCloud said. “We’re not sure right now if we’re going to have a rotation of six or seven guys or nine or 10 guys, but we know it’s going to take a team effort for us to be successful. Not many positions are set, so we’re looking for the guys to push each other.”

IS YOUR HEARING LOSS IMPACTING YOUR JOB PERFORMANCE? By Audrey G. Freeman, Au.D., Dr. of Audiology According to conventional wisdom, to get ahead in today’s economy it’s wise to do a lot of networking and find ways to make your boss look good. But new research revealed that there is a much less obvious way to boost earning: get your hearing checked and get hearing aids if it’s necessary. A survey by the Better Hearing Institute shows that working Americans who ignore their hearing problems are losing at least $100 billion a year in earnings. Even people with a mild hearing loss, who may miss a consonant or a word here and there will lose income if they can’t completely grasp the latest news at the water cooler or the subtle nuances in a phone call from the boss. The average amount of income lost by working people who don’t get hearing aids ranges from $1,000 a year (for those with mild hearing loss) to $12,000 a year (for those with profound hearing loss). But individuals can lose a lot more. We’ve heard of a contractor who blew a $1 million deal because he misheard job specifications that were conveyed in person (he admitted that he had been“too vain”to wear a hearing aid). Getting hearing aids at a younger age reduces the chance of losing income. You

free cell phones, when devices in the ear are increasingly common. Once you try a hearing aid, you’ll probably like them. More than nine out of ten users feel their lives have improved, according to survey findings. The respondents cited a number of specific improvements to their quality of life because of hearing instruments: more effective communications (71%), better social life (56%), better relationships at home (55%), better communication in the workplace (48%), improved emotional health (40%), improved mental/cognitive ability (35%), and even better physical health (24%). might think of hearing loss as something that happens mainly to older people. But many people with this problem are in the prime of life, including 1 out of 6 baby boomers (ages 41-59) and 1 out of 14“Gen-Xers”(ages 29-40). Yet, only 1 out of 4 Americans with hearing problems are getting treatment. People are still embarrassed to admit they have hearing problems and get hearing aids. Some incorrectly believe a hearing aid will make them seem odd or less able to do the job than their co-workers. But, if you don’t respond correctly to co-workers or your boss, that will be much more noticeable than a modern hearing device in your ear. In a service economy, good communication skills are critically important. If you haven’t paid much attention to the latest developments in hearing aids, you will be surprised at how much they have changed. This is the age of iPods and hands-

This nation needs to stop treating hearing loss as a minor problem. Other research shows that hearing problems, when left untreated, can disrupt family life and increase the likelihood of depression and other psychological problems. I hope this convinces you to take hearing loss seriously. Call an audiologist today to schedule your hearing examination. ~ adapted from a press release from the Better Hearing Institute, Alexandria, VA
