Mayoral hopefuls differ on taxes By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Mayor Kevin Burns and mayoral hopeful Bob McQuillan came out swinging Wednesday at a candidate forum focused on fiscal responsibility, co-sponsored by Geneva TaxFACTS. With more than 100 residents gathered at Williamsburg Elementary School, Burns, who is seeking his fourth term, recounted the fiscal health of Kevin the city. Burns “I’m going to begin by sharing some facts,” Burns said. “Sales tax revenue was up 5 percent over [a] comparable time last year. Under my administration, there was 1.12 million new square feet of industrial and commercial space developed. In 2011 and 2012, Geneva’s downtown produced $100 million in sales. Geneva Commons produced $100 million in sales.”

Burns said the downtown was doing well, reducing vacancies from 15 percent to 8 percent, and the city’s budget is balanced. McQuillan countered that Burns has said if the city does not go for its full tax levy, those funds will be lost forever. “You will never hear me say those words,” McQuillan said. “But my opponent has [said it] on more than one occasion. In 2010, he single Bob -handedly kept McQuillan a property tax increase alive. Thankfully five aldermen fought the good fight and reduced the levy to 0.44 percent. And that is just one of the differences between Mayor Burns and myself. Budgets should not be based on how much money you can squeeze from the taxpayers. A mayor’s responsibility is to ensure the best city services are provided at the lowest pos-

Now, he said, how long will it be before residents can’t afford to live there any more. “We are the future of Geneva, not just the people that can afford it,” McQuillan said. “As mayor, I will do everything in my power to see that you can stay in a city that we all love. You have a simple choice on election day. Continue down this fiscally irresponsible path or speak up and say you’ve had enough.”

Burns countered that in surveys done in 2005 and through conversations with the city’s residents, most want a higher level of service and are willing to pay for it. McQuillan said any survey done in 2005 is “out the window” because the economic downturn starting in 2008 would have changed all that. McQuillan challenged Burns that he has boasted of 11 balanced budgets during his 12 years as mayor. Yet, specific indexes of the city’s budgets showed various deficits. Burns explained that those shortfalls were made up through the city’s fund reserves. McQuillan said as mayor, he would direct staff to cut budgets by 5 percent, but without eliminating services. He said he would make up the difference through increased economic development. Burns countered since 2009, the general fund budget that pays for the city’s dayto-day expenses has already been cut 30 percent.

Candidates push for student opportunities By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com ELGIN – The candidates seeking to guide Elgin Community College for the next half-decade believe the college strongly benefits the communities it serves. They also stated their support for a $178 million 2009 referendum that paid for improvements at the college. But all, while speaking at a forum Wednesday for candidates for Elgin Community College District 509, said they believe ECC still can do better. On April 9, voters in the ECC district, which includes residents of St. Charles School District 303, Burlington School District 301 and Elgin District U-46, will choose

three of six candidates to serve on the board. Each of the candidates said ECC’s future will rely on creating opportunities for students. Nadia Blanc-Daley, of St. Charles, urged the creation of a program to partner with local businesses and cities to create internship opportunities for students that could, in turn, lead to job prospects. “I would like [students] to have a path to a job when [they] graduate,” Blanc-Daley said. Others noted their support for maintaining ECC’s affordability. Elias Palacios, a psychologist who lives in Elgin, said ECC should freeze or limit tuition increases. He also urged a greater emphasis on vocation-

al testing. Art Sauceda, an accountant, of Bartlett, also supported limiting tuition increases to keep the school affordable, particularly for students from low- and middle-income households. Sauceda and others said trustees should not interfere with classroom instruction and day-to-day administration. Instead, they said trustees should be focused on setting policy and taking a support and oversight role. Rise D. Jones of Elgin – who helped found youth arts organization Hamilton Wings and is serving as interim trustee on the board – said she believes the main roles of the trustee board are to “support the public image” of the college and to be a “meeting mak-

er” for the college’s faculty, staff, students and the public. And Clare Ollayos, a chiropractor who lives in Elgin and has served on the board since 1995, said she believes the college must tackle “thorny issues” in coming years, including “funding being squeezed” from sources and employee pensions. “We need to be focused on making sure ECC stays viable, not just for today, but for days to come,” Ollayos said. Only Blanc-Daley addressed concerns over property tax bills during the forum, saying she believes ECC’s levy increases should be “limited.” Candidate Angela Causey, a church pastor from South Elgin, did not attend the forum.

Farming knowledge cultivated Fourth-graders flock to Ag Days at Mooseheart By SARAH VETTER editorial@kcchronicle.com MOOSEHEART – When asked about farming, a kid might picture a man on a tractor in a field. During the Kane County Farm Bureau’s 29th annual Ag Days, 2,000 local fourth-graders are learning there’s a lot more to it. Held at the Mooseheart Fieldhouse, students rotated through a series of 25 stations to hear and take part in short presentations on agricultural topics. They learned about corn, soybeans, meat and dairy, farm machinery, biotechnology and vermicomposting, or composting with worms. “It’s very quick, but they pick up a lot of information they can take back to their classrooms and talk about,” said Suzi Myers, KCFB’s agriculture literacy coordinator. “This is a one-shot deal where children can see firsthand how agriculture touches their lives.” Teacher Brad Nelson brought his fourth-grade class from Batavia’s Louise White Elementary School to show them the impact of agriculture on the local economy. “Farming is a big part of what we do in our state,” Nelson said. “It’s a good experience for my students to see the different products we get from things we grow on our own farms here in Illinois.” Some students said they heard that message. “So far, I’ve learned what animals eat and which vitamins come from milk,” said student Katie Stoelinga, adding that her favorite part was seeing the animals. Student Mark Lillig discovered “how important soil is to farming, and what foods come from pigs.” The youths were introduced to baby pigs, lambs and chicks at the event.

“This is a one-shot deal where children can see firsthand how agriculture touches their lives.” Suzi Myers Agriculture literacy coordinator Chuck Bauer grew up on a farm in Ohio, where his family grew wheat, corn, oats and hay and raised cattle, sheep, pigs and chickens. Now, he’s a volunteer with Garfield Farm Museum, a working 1840s farm and inn. He said it’s rare today to find a local student with any connection to farming. “It’s important to realize where our food comes from before it gets to the grocery store,” Bauer said. “Ag days is an opportunity for these kids to make that connection with the animals and the land.”

AU offers $25K reward after bomb threats By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com AURORA – Aurora University is offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to the identification and apprehension of those responsible for bomb threats emailed to the university Wednesday that led to the cancellation of classes. “We regard a bomb threat as a very serious criminal matter and intend to seek full redress for the costs and inconvenience incurred,” Aurora University President Rebecca Sherrick said in a message posted on

AU’s website. “To email or phone a threat of this kind is an act of domestic terrorism that all of us as Americans must work together to stop.” Sherrick urged anyone with information to contact AU’s Campus Public Safety at 630844-6140. Aurora police didn’t find anything suspicious after doing a building-to-building search of the campus after the school received more than one bomb threat Wednesday. Aurora police spokesman Dan Ferrelli did not specify how many threats AU received.

Svevo-Cianci was the night’s featured speaker, kicking off St. Charles School District 303’s four-part mental health summit. Co-chaired by Jim DiCiaula and Mary Pat Ryan,

The hope is “to influence and drive actions that will positively change perceptions of mental illness and related issues, improve early identification and intervention, and enhance the quality and simplify the accessibility of support systems within our community including but not

limited to, impacted children, teens and their families,” according to the written goal. This summit, like those before it, seeks community input. “Your opinions and ideas are needed now,” DiCiaula said. Violence, such as mass shootings, and the stresses of life are reasons for this discussion, Svevo-Cianci said. “The reason we are here today is to be proactive,” she said.

While major episodes of school violence are rare, Svevo-Cianci said, studies indicate signs of mental illness in the youths carrying out these crimes are not. Experts say kids turn to violence and act out violent fantasies because of mental illness and social isolation. “The good news is as a community we can do a lot to address both of these issues,” Svevo-Cianci said. About 10 percent of children and adolescents in the United States suffer from serious mental and emotional disorders, she said. Of children in Illinois, about 7.5 percent ages 3 to 17 have moderate or severe social or emotional problems, and only 20 percent will get mental health services.

Walgreens move awaiting soil results By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia Enterprises officials told plan commissioners Wednesday they are waiting for the results of soil borings before moving further on plans to move Walgreens from its 12,650-square-foot store at 138

W. Wilson St. in the Batavia Plaza into a 15,000-squarefoot building with a drive-thru just east of East China Inn in the shopping center. “We think we can make it work no matter what,” Batavia Enterprises President Dan Stellato told plan commissioners. “We kind of expected poor soils.”

Batavia Enterprises owns Batavia Plaza. Stellato said the results should be ready in the next two weeks. Stellato said the new Walgreens store might have to be built on piers, which is what happened when the new McDonald’s restaurant was built in downtown Batavia. The Fox River used to flow

through the property before the area was filled in 1960 when the plaza was built, he said. The plans for the store have elicited debate because the store would be set back about 70 feet from Wilson Street. The city’s zoning code requires a front building setback to be 10 feet or less.

Campton Hills man pleads guilty in altercation By ASHLEY RHODEBECK arhodebeck@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Stephan C. Bolt, one of the three people charged in connection with a physical altercation that St. Charles police consider a hate crime, pleaded guilty Wednesday to battery. Bolt, 31, of Campton Hills, was sentenced to 12 months of probation for the Class A mis-

demeanor, 60 days of alcohol monitoring and $2,300 in fines and fees, plus a $720 fee for the alcohol monitoring device. He also must undergo a drug and alcohol evaluation Stephan and have no C. Bolt contact with the victim. Other charges against him,

including mob action and hate crime, were dismissed. His lawyer, Matt Downs, said Bolt decided to accept this agreement to avoid the risks associated with trial. “He’s a good, hardworking person,” Downs said. “His involvement in this situation was minimal.” Bolt, along with Christopher M. Miner and Susan V. Patton, was involved in a physical altercation Jan. 6

in the 2000 block of Lincoln Highway, according to St. Charles police reports. Authorities labeled the incident as a hate crime because the suspects reportedly taunted the victims for being gay, police have said. Patton and Miner are due in court April 5 for a preliminary hearing and are expected to begin a jury trial May 6. Miner is also expected in court for a hearing March 28.

The Sugar Grove Police Department on Wednesday issued a news release seeking witnesses to the incident, which took place at 2:56 p.m. Tuesday. Sug-

Policy allows departments to fill vacancies without County Board approval in special circumstances By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com

a move earlier this year to hire a political ally of County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen to serve as a temporary billing manager in the Animal Control Department. The hiring was not submitted to the board for formal approval, and it was done without first posting the job to allow other interested applicants to submit resumes. But Lauzen and supporters of the hiring have defended the decision, saying the quick hire was necessary to help animal control begin collecting potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars in unpaid animal registration fees. Under the proposed poli-

cy, county department heads would be permitted to hire, without formal board approval, to fill vacancies in pre-existing positions at salaries that are the same or less. Department heads also would be permitted to hire under emergency circumstances. However, board mem bers said the proposed policy should be rewritten to state clearly that declining revenues, such as those experienced in animal control, would be considered such an emergency. The proposed new policy also would require county directors to receive approval from the County Board

GENEVA – The County Board has taken the first step toward rewriting its hiring policies, giving county government department directors greater abilities to fill vacancies and hire under “emergency” circumstances, without first securing formal County Board approval. And the County Board appears poised to define “emergencies” used to justify hiring that sidesteps the county’s hiring freeze to explicitly include a decline in income flowing to a particular department. Wednesday, the County

Board Human Services Committee recommended approval of a resolution that would rewrite the county’s hiring rules, which have been in place since 2008. The County Board set the hiring freeze in response to the onset of the Great Recession. Under such policies, county department heads were not allowed to hire new employees without first having the hire reviewed and approved by the County Board. In recent weeks, that policy has come under scrutiny, and County Board members have questioned how effective the policy is and whether it is too ambiguous. The questions arose after

BATAVIA – A company that makes colorants and additives that are used in products is moving its operations from Naperville to Batavia. Techmer PM is in the process of setting up its new facility in a 74,000-square-foot building on Douglas Road after outgrowing its 60,000-squarefoot facility in Naperville. “We’ve been pretty successful in growing the business,” said Dwight Morgan, vice president of marketing for Techmer PM. Techmer PM makes polymer modifiers that are used in different markets, including agriculture, the medical field and the automotive industry. Morgan started Accel Color Corp. in 1998 in Naperville, which Techmer bought in April 2008. In December, Techmer PM started leasing the building on

Douglas Road in Batavia, and the company is in the process of renovating it. “We are putting in all new efficient lighting,” Morgan said. “We are very committed to being green.” Techmer is expected to move into the building by summer, which will allow the company to expand operations, he said. “We currently have eight production lines, and we will be adding one more,” he said. “The new building will give us room to grow.” The building’s location near Interstate 88 makes it ideal for shipping products, Morgan said. “We will also use it as a corporate hub for training and customer interaction,” he said. The building will house about 35 employees, Morgan said. He expects it to add 15 more over the next several years.

OPINIONS Excited to be attending Saint Mary’s College In 1844, the Sisters of the Holy Cross founded Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Ind. Since then, SMC has grown to be a distinguished women’s liberal arts college. And it is where I will continue my education next year. I plan on majoring in English and education, and if I could swing a minor in French, I’d be thrilled. SMC is definitely a small liberal arts school, and the staff-to-student ratio is about 10:1. I like smaller class sizes and more one-on-one time with teachers, so that statistic thrills me. I could memorize more stats about Saint Mary’s, but I somehow doubt that I’ll ever need to print out party invitations for every single student on campus or take a class on how many students have scholarships. What I know is that it’s small – fewer than 2,000 undergrads. But it’s not like I’m going to run out of people, especially with the university of 12,000 students literally across the street. For those who don’t know, Saint Mary’s College is indeed the University of Notre Dame’s sister school. This means that, while enjoying my small, female-oriented learning environment, I can also take classes at Notre Dame, attend Notre Dame sporting events, enjoy campus amenities and – as SMC keeps strangely reminding me – join the Notre Dame marching band. Sadly, I doubt I will be taking advantage of the marching opportunity, owing to my complete tone deafness and bad legs. But I will be definitely watching “Fighting Irish Football,” and I will continue my tradition of picking Notre Dame to win my March Madness bracket (so there’s my pick for anyone who cares about the bracketology of a non-athletic, 17-year-old girl). From what I’ve heard from the

VIEWS Courtney Phelan SMC freshman Facebook page, and a friend of mine whose three aunts all went to Saint Mary’s, the Notre Dame boys want to date the Saint Mary’s girls. So if you see me in 20 years, I will likely be married to a red-headed engineer. I’m excited to go to college next year. Finally making my choice has eliminated some of my nerves but also brought on a whole onslaught of new worries. What if everyone is lying about the Notre Dame boys thing, and I never see a Y chromosome in my four years? What if the school is literally too small and I never find any friends? What if, after four years of never failing a class, I fail everything this semester, Saint Mary’s decides to reject me, and I have to attend the University of Failures and Idiots? I know the only way my questions will be answered will be to go there in the fall, but I still worry. I worry a little more every day, but I know that someday that anxiety will turn into academic eustress. I don’t know where I’m living next year, what classes I’ll be taking, or what I’ll do if I get sick and my mom isn’t there to take care of me. What I do know is that I am extremely proud and excited to be a member of Saint Mary’s Belles Class of 2017.

Sean Michels has skillfully guided the village of Sugar Grove through what often has been a challenging economic time during his three terms as village president. He has demonstrated an ability to attract businesses – such as the Rush-Copley Convenient Care facility and Jimmy John’s – to the town, and he has more goals, including completing the interchange at Route 47 and Interstate 88. He understands and would prioritize Sugar Grove signing on to an impact fee agreement with Kaneland School District 302, something other Kaneland communities already have done. His opponent in the race for Sugar Grove village president, Kevin Geary, certainly has played a key role in the village’s success. Geary has been a trustee for about 13 years and has been an involved and engaged community member, working on such key projects as the Corn Boil festival and Holiday in the Grove. Geary was instrumental in getting an advisory referendum on the April 9 ballot to address the village’s recent lifting of its video gambling ban. Michels said he would consider reinstating the ban if the vote results show residents don’t support video gambling. Geary has said the same. Michels has been a strong leader during a difficult economy. We endorse him for a fourth term.

Q&A By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com The accolades keep pouring in for “American Idol” winner Scotty McCreery. In 2011, McCreery became the show’s first country male winner and its youngest male winner in any genre. Last year, he was named New Artist of the Year at the Academy of Country Music Awards and the American Country Awards. The 19-year-old McCreery will perform at 8 p.m. March 28 at The Paramount Theatre, 23 E. Galena Blvd., Aurora. Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to McCreery about his current activities.

Eric Schelkopf: I understand that you are finishing up your new album. Will you be previewing any of your new songs at the show in Aurora? Scotty McCreery: Yeah, definitely, definitely. We’re going to be playing a lot of stuff from the first album, but we’re going to playing three or four songs from the new record. We’re kind of testing them out, and seeing which songs the fans are digging. That’s kind of what we are looking for.

ES: So, what should people expect from the new album? SM: Well, they should obviously expect country music. But the cool thing about me

When I was sitting there on the stage and when Ryan announced it was me, I was definitely like, “Oh, my goodness.” I don’t know if I can pinpoint one emotion, because everything was kind of running through my head all at once. It was definitely one of those moments that I will never forget.

ES: What kind of growth have you had as an artist since winning “American Idol?” SM: In the last two years, I’ve just done nothing but learn, whether it is just from personal experience on the road or whether it’s from major artists that I’ve gotten the chance to talk to, and they give me some advice. I think I’ve gotten more comfortable on the road, a lot more comfortable in my own skin out there in this industry.

ES: What do you think of last year’s winner, Philip Phillips? SM: He’s great. He’s had a huge amount of success with his song, “Home.” And it’s pretty cool to watch another “Idol” winner take off like that. I still try to watch the show as much as I can. With me being in college and also touring, it makes for a lot of busy nights.

ES: Your debut album, “Clear As Day,” has been certified platinum for one million copies sold. Were you surprised that it did so well? SM: Yeah, definitely. Especially with it being the first album, you really have no idea what to expect or what to even look forward to. To sit back and kind of watch that album take on a life of its own was pretty special and pretty wild to watch. I never really got that radio hit on that album. That’s kind of the main focus of this album coming up, to try and find that radio hit.

ES: When you first auditioned for “American Idol,” what kind of emotions were you feeling? SM: I was a nervous wreck. I didn’t really know what to

Eric Schelkopf: I understand you’ve been writing some new songs. Are you going to be performing any of the new songs at your show in St. Charles? Aaron Carter: No, I’m not, actually. I’m just sticking with my stuff from my previous album, because that’s pretty much what it’s about. I just started on Friday recording my new album.

ES: So, what should people expect from the new album? AC: It’s me, a grown-up version of what everybody knows. And

ES: You’ve been singing since you were 7. Is this what you had always wanted to do? AC: I wanted to do it, because I looked up to my big brother, Nick, and what he did. I wanted to be an entertainer, too.

ES: Did you feel any pressure because of the success Nick achieved with the Backstreet Boys? AC: No, not really. Nick has always been successful in doing his group thing, and I’ve fortunately been able to stand on my own as a solo artist, and create my own fan base.

As long as he can “get lost” in a film, it’s worth a watch. “You kind of forget everything around you and you forget you’re watching a film,” he said. The man behind Geneva’s Film Festival, which is in its sixth year, is a cameraman by trade who appreciates a good plot line, especially if it has some science fiction or psychological thriller elements. Rolf, 49, grew up in the southern Illinois town of Centralia, and initially wanted to become an architect. When he

Yo got to college, he realized he wanted to do something more creative, so he studied journalism and advertising. But after interviewing with a few ad agencies following graduation, he realized he didn’t really want to do that, either. He started doing some film editing and worked with a producer who suggested he should give film production a try. And that seemed to stick. “I realized what I wanted to do was camera work because you were like the center of the universe with the camera,” he said.

they nervously shake their hand, take a photo and get an autograph, they usually thank me for helping them with the “bucket list” item of meeting their idol. Again, a bit of irony, as

DC was on MY bucket list. He epitomized what I wanted to be when I grew up – A well respected and widely loved conduit between music and the masses. Not an actual performer, yet an entertainer

in his own right. He was somebody who brought joy to millions via song, dance and a familiar smile. I think I never really pursued the intro because of the international familiarity with his audience he had. With so many single degrees of separation between us, coupled with the too-many-to-count times I saw him on one show or another, it was as if he was by my house for pasta the night before. With all those fabulous rock ’n‘ roll moments we all witnessed over the years, I think my favorite Dick Clark moment was his last “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” special. Still handsome with the boyish good looks, he struggled with his speech after a terrible stroke. He kept his dignity though, and also kept his tradition of kissing his beloved wife at midnight. Although the kiss was physically awkward for him, he did it with a passion I have rarely seen. It showed a love that not even a massive stroke could stifle. As more and more of music’s pioneers pass on, I can’t help but think of that Righ-

teous Brothers classic, “Rock ’n‘ Roll Heaven” as Bill Medley sang at our Arcada Theatre last year, “…If there’s a rock and roll heaven, well you know they’ve got a hell of a band.” The song refers to all those music masters who have passed on so young. But with all those young rock stars up there, Dick Clark is probably keeping them all in line, on some cloud with a bunch of musical souls dancing around them. It seems the legacy of rock stars gets grander upon their death. Their music lives on for generations. Their images get plastered on coffee mugs and mouse pads and refrigerator magnets. But guys like Dick Clark usually don’t have that kind of staying power. My 8-year-old daughter will grow up and know who Sinatra, Elvis and Michael were, but Dick Clark? I will do my best to tell her about Dick Clark and “American Bandstand.” More importantly, I’ll tell her to be aggressive in pursuing her “bucket list.”

Geneva Film Festival to include 27 films from 20 countries • GENEVA FILM Continued from page 16 “Everything revolves around the camera,” Rolf said. Rolf said he landed an internship with a camera company and after learning about technical components of the camera, he started going out on jobs as a camera assistant. Today, he mostly does commercials, but he’s also worked on the visual effects team for “The Dark Knight” and “Transformers 3,” and also did work on the television show “Prison Break.” Rolf said he looks forward to shooting his own film short this summer, which he wrote. He described the films he writes as “twisted,” but not like a

horror movie – more like a psychological thriller. “I’ve always been a big fan of The Twilight Zone,” he said. “When people are like, ‘Oh my God, I didn’t see that coming,’ then you know you got it.” Among the directors who have inspired him are Ridley Scott, who directed “Alien” and “Blade Runner;” James Cameron, who directed “The Abyss” and “Terminator;” and most recently, David Fincher, who directed “Fight Club” and “Se7en.” Rolf said his favorite part about making films is the collaboration between so many different people who share the same vision. “For the most part, everyone wants to show up and do something really cool and do something magical,” he said.

“That’s the part that I love about this industry. It’s such a collaborative effort. When everything comes together, there’s such a sense of pride. Rolf first got involved in the Geneva Film Festival in its second year and now organizes the festival, which this year includes 27 films representing 20 countries. “Last year was the first year the festival really came together,” he said. “This year, we’re kind of building on that because last year was so successful.”

As the one year anniversary of the passing of rock ’n‘ roll icon Dick Clark comes upon us, a couple of questions come to mind: How many lives has American Rock ’n‘ Roll touched? How many careers did Dick Clark launch or foster? How many of the millions of watchers of the 7,500-plus shows he produced had moments of happiness and memories that lasted a lifetime because of those shows? ANSWER: Immeasurable! I never met the man. I never actually pursued it. And it’s ironic, because all these tributes and testimonials I have been reading were by people I have known for years! Legends like Little Anthony, Neil Sedaka, Danny & The Juniors, Frankie Avalon, Frankie Valli, Tom Dreesen, Mary Wilson, Pat Boone, James Darren, Nancy Sinatra … the list goes on and on. All good friends of ours, and all who attribute their careers to Dick Clark. I didn’t even approach my good buddy, the late Ed McMahon and former television partner of Dick’s whose gift of a video of him saying, “And now, heeeeeeeere’s Ronnie” in the same vein as Johnny Carson is one of my most treasured possessions. Man, I should have asked him for the introduction. At each of our shows, I always try to facilitate fans’ meet and greet with the stars. After

Guenther looks to build off big summer By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva baseball coach Matt Hahn figures juniors new to varsity fall into one of two categories in the early weeks of each season. Either they’re simply happy to be wearing royal blue and white or they’re yearning to compete for a spot. Count outfielder Matt Guenther in the latter category after a breakout summer travel season with the Carol Stream-based Dupage Training Academy – just don’t think he’s completely stone-faced. The chance to join seniors Jake Weede and Bobby Hess in the outfield and hopefully settle into a potent lineup excites Guenther to no end. “There’s so much talent on this team,” Guenther said. “I just feel like there’s so many guys around that can make me better and stuff like that.” Guenther arguably finds his greatest ally in senior right-hander Andy Honiotes, a Miami (Fla.) recruit. The pair befriended one another around this time in 2012, and Guenther charted Honiotes’ stellar season – 7-0, 1.01 ERA – while a member of the sophomore team. A few weeks later, Guenther was careful not to glare too widely when he smacked a liner against Honiotes during a summer bullpen session. Impressed, Honiotes spoke from more than one swing when he told Guenther he had solid talent, sparking a confidence-fueled summer that saw Guenther bat .429 for Dupage while leading the team in hits, RBIs, walks, runs and onbase percentage. Invitations to offseason showcases followed, along with recruiting advice from Honiotes, who figures his friend will be fielding his share of collegiate overtures before long. “I want him to be as good as he can be, because I know he’s got a ton of potential,” Honiotes said.

Emory coming on late for Huskies

ON CAMPUS Dennis D. Jacobs “Better late than never” might be a good motto for Bryce Emory’s college golf career. When the Northern Illinois senior wrapped up a highly successful prep career at Marmion in 2008, he still had no idea where he was going to play in college. “I was a real late commit,” he recalls. “I committed in mid-June after graduation.” Although he was a threetime Suburban Catholic Conference Player of the Year, colleges weren’t knocking down his door to make him offers. “I kind of fell through the cracks of recruiting my senior year because I didn’t play bad, but I didn’t outshine anybody else,” Emory said. Emory said he was considering attending a junior college or perhaps walking on at a four-year program when Northern Illinois head coach John Cleary – now an assistant women’s golf coach at Minnesota – finally called. “Coach Cleary, who recruited me, had a couple of players at the end of the school year transfer out, so he had a spot open,” Emory said. Cleary wound up leaving for an assistant coaching position at Texas Tech and Emory’s play as a freshman didn’t exactly impress the Huskies’ new head coach, Tom Porten. “I put a lot of pressure on myself,” Emory said. “I didn’t play all that well. … I had a chip on my shoulder.” Emory said he wanted to prove he could play at the NCAA Division I level, but he only played in four events as a freshman – two in the fall and two in the spring – finishing well down the leaderboard in all of them. He credits making a better adjustment to the college game for a much more successful sophomore year. He finished third on the team with a scoring average of 75.7 for 18 holes and got his first top-five tournament finish

Bryce Emory is a Marmion graduate and current Northern Illinois University golfer. with a fifth-place result at the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational in Muncie, Ind. Emory’s strong play continued into his junior year. He finished the fall with a career-best third-place finish at the Georgetown Intercollegiate in Beallsville, Md., then started the spring season with a tie for sixth at the University of Central Florida’s Rio Pinar Invitational, where he finished 5-under par. “From there, I kind of struggled.” Emory said. “I was in a little bit of a slump. I had some swing problems. … I really struggled off the tees.” Emory admits he’s “never been the straightest hitter,” but now he said the ball was either going in the fairway or out of bounds or hitting a tree. He said his difficulties driving started to affect the rest of his game. This past fall, his scoring average ballooned to 80.3 after he ended his junior year at 74.8. This winter, Emory said

he worked a lot on his wedge play. “I’ve always been one of the longer hitters,” said Emory, who stands 6-6 and weighs 210 pounds. “When I’m confident in my driver and I can hit it a lot, it can really shorten up courses.” That, in turn, allows him to hit more wedges to get him on the green in good position. “I’d say my putting has always been a part of my game that I’ve been pretty confident in,” he adds. All the winter work paid off with a fifth-place result at his first spring event a month ago, the Forest Hills Collegiate in Augusta, Ga. Emory shot an even-par 144 over the 36 holes of the event. His play earned him the Mid-American Conference Golfer of the Week award. “It was nice to get back in the lineup and prove myself,” Emory said. “To get the player of the week honor was kind of the cherry on top.”

He said he’s now “ready to finish off my career the right way” by hopefully winning a tournament or two or at least recording some more top-five finishes. Emory said how he plays the rest of the spring season and over the summer will help him decide whether he should turn pro. “My parents [Robert and Laura] have always supported it,” he noted. “If that doesn’t work out, I’ll have a degree.” He’s majoring in marketing. “NIU has the reputation of a pretty good business school,” Emory said. “It doesn’t hurt to have a degree from there.”

Urlacher was as much a symbol of modern-day Chicago as world-class architecture, deepdish pizza and government corruption. But Urlacher will turn 35 years old in May – ancient by NFL standards. He has battled injuries to his neck, back, wrist, knee and calf. His greatest asset, speed, has all but disappeared. It happens to everybody. Urlacher knew as well as anyone that it would happen to him. In 2010, Urlacher was within a handful of tackles of the Bears’ all-time record. That’s a pretty incredible feat when you consider how many great tacklers have played for this team. The Bears were about to go on the road to play the Miami Dolphins in a Thursday night game. Barring injury, Urlacher was going to break the record. I asked him what being the franchise’s all-time tackle leader would mean to him. “It probably means Lance is going to pass me in a couple years,” Urlacher said with a shrug.

After more than a few uncertain days and nights, the Bears have decided to move on. Before long, so will Brian Urlacher. And so should the rest of us. At the risk of losing my self-proclaimed title as World’s Most Beloved And Devastatingly Good-Looking Sports Columnist of 2013, this is how I feel about Urlacher’s departure: The Bears made the right decision. It was a really tough decision, but it was the right decision. Anyway, we all know the details of the story by now. The Bears spent the majority of their free-agent budget on tight end Martellus Bennett and offensive tackle Jermon Bushrod, not to mention re-signing defensive tackle Henry Melton, which left little to offer to Urlacher. A bargain-bin deal remained possible until Wednesday, when the Bears announced they would not resign the eight-time Pro Bowl linebacker who so famously wore No. 54. “We were unable to reach an agreement with Brian,” general manager Phil Emery said in a statement released by the team, “and both sides have decided to move forward.” Make that one side. “It was not a negotiation it was an ultimatum,” Urlacher wrote on his Twitter page Wednesday evening. “Gonna miss my teammates.” Urlacher’s prickliness is understandable. He gave so much to the franchise for so

The Washington Post Last fall, as the science-fiction thriller “Looper” was building up steam in theaters, it wasn’t surprising to see fans lining up to see it a second time – to untangle the film’s complicated skein of time travel, shifting characters and life-and-death plot twists. But why were those re-“Loopers” watching their beloved movie with their iPhones on and their ear buds in? It turned out that “Looper’s” writer-director, Rian Johnson, was giving them his own private guided tour through the world he’d created on-screen, by way of an in-theater podcast he produced specifically for that purpose. Johnson had done the same thing a few years earlier with his film “The Brothers Bloom,” an indie starring Mark Ruffalo and Adrien Brody that had been in danger of getting lost in the multiplex shuffle. “I was scrambling to figure out a way to generate more interest in the movie,” Johnson recalled in a phone conversation from Los Angeles. “I just thought [a podcast] was a unique idea I could do myself that would be this homespun thing.” In the filmmaking world, “Clerks” director Kevin Smith proved an early adopter of podcasts as a canny, cost-effective way to promote his work and build his audience. But Johnson, 39, has taken the technology one step further in bridging the gap between conventional spectatorship and the kind of filmmaker-viewer engagement that audiences increasingly demand – and movie studios increasingly covet. Johnson, an enthusiastic Twitter native who regularly

The movie-going experience is changing with more interaction between the audience and movie-makers – during the film. interacts with fans on his website, admitted that “not that many people” availed themselves of the “Brothers Bloom” podcast. “But I still liked the idea. So I asked people on Twitter, hey, did anyone actually use that weird thing I did with ‘Brothers Bloom?’ And I got a lot of positive responses, so I decided to give it another shot.” So far, Johnson’s “Looper” commentary has been downloaded or streamed more than 27,700 times. After a brief etiquette lesson (please put your glowing screen in your pocket) and instructions on when to start the podcast (right after the TriStar pegasus shows up in the opening credits), Johnson begins his narration, a laid-back monologue during which he explains how he shot various scenes, the mechanics of the film’s special effects and stunts, and even where his mom and dad show up for cameos. (“Not her ... not her ... her!”) Whereas the “Looper” DVD commentary includes stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Emily Blunt, Johnson’s in-theater version is simultaneously more conversational (you can hear him take sips of coffee throughout the nearly two-

hour presentation) and more technical, with the filmmaker eagerly digressing into explanations of anamorphic aspect ratios and the vagaries of lens flares. “You can be a lot more casual with the fans,” Johnson says of the podcast. “You kind of relax a little bit and dig in a little bit deeper. If someone’s doing this, they’re not a casual consumer. They’re really interested in the process, so you can dig in and not be afraid that you’ll bore them.” Johnson doesn’t produce the podcasts as a way to increase revenue; he readily admits that the number of repeat theatrical viewings was probably too negligible to be significant. Rather, he’s part of a generation of filmmakers for whom creating and nurturing a dedicated audience is as instinctive as sending a text instead of leaving a voicemail. “The people I know who [use emerging technology and] are, quote-unquote, successful at it, are not approaching it with a goal of becoming successful at it,” Johnson says. “They’re successful because they genuinely enjoy being out there and interacting with people.

I would be doing this even if I wasn’t making movies for a living. And I think people can sense that. They can also tell which filmmakers were told by their PR departments to start a Twitter account for their movies and do it in an obligatory way, then ditch it.” Sony, “Looper’s” distributor, was supportive of Johnson’s idea to do a podcast. But increasingly, Johnson’s contemporaries in the low-budget world are discovering that distributors demand interaction with viewers. Indeed, some companies have been known to make deals largely on the strength of communities filmmakers have nurtured online. When IFC Films acquired the comedy “Super,” they also acquired star Rainn Wilson’s huge Twitter audience. Only a few days ago, Warner Bros. greenlighted a movie based on the “Veronica Mars” television series after creator Rob Thomas raised more than $2 million on Kickstarter, setting a new record for the crowd-funding website. The money was surely less important to the studio than the more than 45,000 fans who flocked to Thomas’ page – guaranteed customers who can generate valuable wordof-mouth once the movie is released. For directors working with tiny budgets, distributors now expect to leverage their pre-existing network. “There’s an expectation now that the filmmaker will bring their audience with them,” said Joe Swanberg, a few days after his new film “Drinking Buddies” premiered at the South by Southwest film festival. “And the only way to keep in touch with that audience is through Twitter and your Web site and things like that.”

Benefits of low-dose aspirin outweigh slight risk Dear Doctor K: I take a daily aspirin to prevent a heart attack. I just read that aspirin can cause macular degeneration. Should I stop taking it? Dear Reader: No, you shouldn’t stop taking aspirin. Medicine – and life – is full of trading off one risk for another. Doctors and medical scientists aren’t (yet) smart enough to discover or invent treatments that have absolutely no risks, only benefits. So you have to compare the risk of a treatment against your risks if you don’t take it. I’ll bet you read about a recent study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, which linked aspirin use with a small increased risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). But this increased risk was far smaller than the proven benefits of aspirin for preventing a heart attack. AMD is an eye condition. It damages the macula, a small part of the retina of the eye that is responsible for sharp central vision. There are two forms of AMD. “Dry” AMD is the most common. Some people with it have no symptoms; others have vision loss. Dry macular

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff degeneration can progress to “wet” AMD. In this form, abnormal blood vessels in the eye leak fluid and blood, sometimes causing loss of vision. The study that linked aspirin and AMD has followed nearly 5,000 adults for decades to see how their eyesight changes as they age. Participants in the study were checked for signs of macular degeneration every five years. Among other questions, they were asked about their aspirin use. Participants in the study were at slightly greater risk of developing late-stage AMD if they had been regularly taking aspirin 10 years previously. “Late stage” means the disease is far enough along to cause impaired vision or blindness. There was a link between aspirin and wet AMD. However, this study does not mean that aspirin is proven to increase the risk of AMD. It could be, for example, that something else about the people in the study caused them to

both take aspirin and develop AMD. In other words, aspirin was linked to AMD, but aspirin was not the cause of AMD. Even if aspirin does increase the risk of AMD, the study showed that the added risk of aspirin use was small. About 14 in 1,000 aspirin users developed late-stage wet AMD compared to six in 1,000 non-aspirin users – eight more people out of 1,000. So, should you shy away from aspirin? The answer is no, especially if you are taking a daily low-dose aspirin to prevent a heart attack. The small (and still unconfirmed) added risk of AMD is far outweighed by the rock-solid benefits of aspirin for the heart. But this study does raise an important point. Even a “safe” medication like aspirin isn’t something you want to take regularly unless it will clearly do you some good. In this case, it will. P.S.: I practice what I preach. I take low-dose aspirin daily to prevent a heart attack.

Dear Abby: My 22-year-old daughter became pregnant from a guy she had dated only a few months, but never seriously. After weeks of wondering what she was going to do, she decided that terminating her pregnancy was the best thing to do considering she has limited income and still lives with me. I, however, am pro-life, although I do feel that in cases of rape or incest it is acceptable. My daughter knows how I feel about this. I supported her in her decision, but did not agree with it. Then, usually some mistakes are made – after all, we are only human. Sometimes, we can analyze a double-dummy problem. The contract is given and the result calculated, assuming everyone is looking at all 52 cards. At the table, you rarely play double-dummy. However, occasionally it is possible – as in this deal. How did South play in four spades? West led the club three (low from length since he had not supported his partner’s suit). East took dummy’s 10 with his queen and shifted safely to a trump. South might have started with a takeout double, but he judged it unlikely that his side could make a slam. Since there were only 12 highcard points missing, declarer could place East with the heart king and diamond queen. South, though, still faced four losers – two hearts, one diamond and one club – because he did not have a dummy entry to take the diamond finesse. Declarer drew trumps, then played three rounds of diamonds. East won and was endplayed. He led the club ace, but South accurately discarded a low heart. Now East, whether he led a heart or a club, had to bring the dummy back to life. There were other successful lines of play involving a squeeze-endplay on East, but this one was the easiest.

• MAKEOVER Continued from page 2 Blown-in ceiling insulation had to be removed in order to install recessed pot lights. And remember that shoddy reno job I mentioned? It turns out that we had to shore up a supporting wall before we could even get started on the rest of our plan. But once all of that was done, this project really started to heat up! My favorite part of the renovation is the treatment we applied to the floor. We had to select a material that would meld with the cherry-toned hardwood and marble floor tile in the adjoining rooms, while providing some cushiony comfort.

Inspiration struck, and I chose a three-color Marmoleum checkerboard tile floor that is easy to clean and soft underfoot. My plan called for a lot of counter space and storage capabilities, two things every kitchen needs. We extended a durable and stain-free quartz counter down the entire length of this space, and a tiled backsplash that picks up the floor colors. In the “den” end of the new kitchen, a cozy sofa and a small round table offer casual seating, while a built-in desk with lots of adjoining storage space provides a convenient place to do homework.
