Ready to answer the call Telecommunicators provide services to 14 agencies in county By JOSEPH BUSTOS jbustos@shawmedia.com CRYSTAL LAKE - When Janet Mitchell comes into work, she looks at five screens, types on four keyboards, operates three computer mice and wears a headset to speak on the phone. One screen tells the Southeast Emergency Communication Center telecommunicator where different emergency vehicles are located, one shows the different phone lines, one lists the frequencies she can listen to, one has maps, and then there’s the traditional computer screen. Over her workspace are three lights: a blue light to signal if she’s on the phone, a red light to say she’s talking on the radio, and an orange light to say if there’s an equipment or tower problem. Hers is one of six stations at the SEECOM office in Crystal Lake, where telecommunicators provide dispatching services for 14 agencies, mostly in McHenry County. All day every day, from those stations, telecommunicators relay information to emergency responders from people calling for help. The dispatchers let emergency responders know if weapons are involved, if people are hurt, get basic medical information, or even help callers keep someone’s airway open. Being a dispatcher used to be a stepping stone job to being a police officer or firefighter. It’s since become a profession, said Linda Luehring, the executive director of SEECOM. “You now give medical instruction, you now give fire instruction, you’re getting background information from people and the hazards in the home, they’re collecting a lot of information on how they decide how they deploy people,” Luehring said. “It’s a career for people now.” Going from a slow shift to running full speed to dispatch people out to an emergency is a talent, Mitchell said. “If nothing is happening and phones ring, everyone

Telecommunicator Stephanie Burzynski of Huntley works at the Crystal Lake Emergency Operations Center. Burzynski has been in service for 6 years. With the constant changes in technology, telecommunicators have to be willing to constantly adapt as well as having the mental and emotional strength to keep up with this critical position. drops everything, and starts handling things,” Mitchell said. “You can go from nothing to craziness in a matter of a few minutes.” Keeping someone calm is key when talking to a person calling in an emergency. “We ask them to talk slower, and tell them to breathe. People tend to forget to breathe when they’re really excited,” Mitch-

ell said. “So if we get them focused on calming down and just talking to us, that helps ... Sometimes you have to be firm with them and tell them what they need to do.” Traumatic calls can have the same effect on dispatchers as they do police officers and firefighters. So Mitchell recently was certified in critical incident stress management.

“It was something I was interested in,” Mitchell said. “It is to help dispatchers and emergency personnel cope with an extraordinary amount of stress ... Part of my job is to let go of things. Once something is over, I don’t think of it again.” However, sometimes closure is hard to come by. “A lot of times we don’t know the outcomes,” Mitchell said. “We send the ambulance out, we know the person got transported, we don’t know if they’re OK or if it’s more serious than we thought. That’s hard, not knowing the outcome of calls, not knowing if they catch the bad guys sometimes.” Luehring said a majority of domestic calls occur between 7 p.m. and 2 a.m., and DUIs from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. However, dispatchers cannot believe patterns will always stay true. “Any of those things can happen at any time,” Luehring said. Chris Dawson works in McHenry as a telecommunicator, and has been dispatching people to emergencies for eight years. When she applied for the job, she had to take psychological, typing and aptitude tests, among other things. She starts her shift by checking to see if there are any Amber Alerts for missing children, and checks to see what incidents happened in the previous shift. On slow days, the dispatchers might play games or do some training, such as on how to handle cultural discrepancies and how to continually improve customer service skills. “The ultimate goal is to get as much information as you need to protect them [callers], the officer and the general public,” Dawson said. And sometimes there are people having rough days who will call for help in an angry tone, or swear at the dispatcher, Dawson said. She just remembers the emotions are not directed at her. “If I could get the information, and the situation can be resolved, what’s a word to me?” Dawson said.

Respite for open spaces Slow economy allows for more preservation within the county By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com Lisa Haderlein remembers when the Land Conservancy of McHenry County was struggling to keep pace with the rapid, steadfast development of the early 2000s that transformed the county into suburbia. But the economic downturn and housing bubble burst of the late 2000s granted Haderlein and the local conservation group a breather. As development halted, the Land Conservancy refocused its attention on how to preserve the numerous open spaces – including farmland, wetlands, woodlands and prairies – vital to the ecosystem and quality of life in the coun-

ty, rather than pockmark their conservation efforts. “With the recession, things have slowed. It’s nice not to have that pressure where you are always reacting to the next mega development being proposed,” Haderlein said. “We can sit back and look at the landscape and speak to the value the land has.” Haderlein, the executive director of the Land Conservancy, and others in agencies such as the McHenry County Conservation District and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, exist to preserve and acquire open spaces throughout the county. Across the country, almost 6,000 acres of open space a day are being lost to developers looking to convert parcels

into a subdivision or business park, the U.S. Agriculture Department estimates. But in McHenry County, the recession dampened the feverish pace of development, Haderlein said. The reprieve has allowed the Land Conservancy to preserve nearly 700 acres of creeks, farmland and woodlands throughout the county since the recession hit. The nonprofit often works with private landowners and local governments to negotiate land donations. The effort has allowed the group to preserve roughly 2,000 total acres of open space that is needed to ensure groundwater aquifers recharge and farm soils replenish for production. “We all breathe air. We all drink water. We need food to live. Open space and underdeveloped land provides those things,” Haderlein said. “I don’t care if there is a $2 million mansion being developed. If there is not water to flush the

toilet, it’s worth nothing.” The MCCD has the greatest authority to acquire and protect land in the county. The agency used two successful referendums in 2001 and 2007 to preserve open space and watersheds, improve recreational areas and restore wildlife habitats. All told, the district manages more than 25,000 acres of open space scattered throughout the county, including areas such as Coral Woods in Marengo, Glacial Park in Ringwood and Pleasant Valley in Woodstock. The McHenry-Lake County Soil and Water Conservation District doesn’t actively acquire open spaces, but it provides the conservation district with constant input, said District Manager Ed Weskerna. The group has stressed the importance of protecting the county’s prime farmland, which makes up 60 percent of the county landscape, primari-

ly located in less developed areas to the north and west. “We are not trying to promote development, and we are not trying to promote all land preservation,” Weskerna said. “We are just trying to steer development away from the prime farmland in the county.” MCCD and the Land Conservancy have said they will protect the declining oak tree population that once represented a large portion of the county’s natural habitat. The county’s 2030 plan even carves out a goal to preserve 15 percent of the county’s open space through land acquisition and other preservation tools such as private land donations. “Open space is essential to our neighborhoods to provide relief from suburban stressors like traffic congestion, blacktop roads and a horizon of only rooftops,” said Elizabeth Kessler, executive director of MCCD.

Tseumah high jump champion By JOE STEVENSON joestevenson@shawmedia.com

Douglas Cottle for Shaw Media

Marengo’s Allie Sprague and Katie Adams embrace after the 1,600-meter run during Saturday’s Class 2A girls track and field state meet finals at O’Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. Adams won the race with a career-best time of 5:00.84; Sprague was second in 5:07.19. The duo managed to score 31 points, which tied the Indians for fifth place as a team.

Marengo’s Adams takes home state title By JOE STEVENSON joestevenson@shawmedia.com CHARLESTON – Woodstock’s Maura Beattie utilized a different strategy against Marengo’s Katie Adams, her rival, for their fourth meeting in the 3,200 meters this season. Beattie unleashed everything she had, pressing the pace hard from the outset in an effort to break the other competitors’ spirits. The ploy worked just as Beattie and her coaches had hoped. By the sixth lap, it was obvious she was going to win the Class 2A 3,200 in the IHSA girls track and field state meet Saturday. “I just kept thinking, ‘Keep pushing,’ so they couldn’t get any closer,” Beattie said. “I could hear my sister (Elise) on the back stretch yelling. I just wanted to go out hard and keep going.” The Blue Streaks junior won in 10 minutes 55.77 seconds, with Peoria Notre Dame’s Maryjeanne Gilbert (11:00.31) in second and Adams (11:10.77) in third. She joins her sister Kayla as a Class 2A state

champion; Kayla won the race in 2010 and 2011. Adams looked tired in that race, but collected herself and came back to win the 1,600 in her career-best time of 5:00.84. Her teammate Allie Sprague was second in 5:07.19. Those two managed to score 31 points, which tied the Indians for fifth place as a team. “It was really tough mentally coming back,” Adams said. “I was really tired after the 3,200. I had to bounce back mentally for the 1,600. I had to calm myself down and tell myself I could do it. I definitely ran that race with my heart, I wasn’t going to let up.” Adams was not challenged in the 1,600. She and Sprague separated themselves in the first two laps and kept going. “I was really surprised,” said Sprague, who took fourth earlier in the 800. “I was not expecting this (in the 1,600) at all. My goal was to just place here.” Hampshire’s Ashley Fouch also had a big day in Saturday’s finals at Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brien Stadium, where she will run next year.

Fouch was runner-up in the Class 2A 400 and anchored the Whip-Purs’ third-place 4x400 relay team that ran 3:58.05. Elizabeth Evans, Nikki Dumoulin and Elizabeth Pagan ran the first three legs. Class 2A state recordholder Shamier Little of Chicago Lindblom ran 54.37 to win the 400. Fouch was in Lane 3, with Little in Lane 4 ahead of her the entire race. “I just chased her and not only got a [personal record], but second,” Fouch said. “I’m happy. My times have been up and down and I didn’t know how I’d finish here, but you just come out and run your best.” Beattie was content with second place in last week’s Grayslake Central Sectional for a reason. “Our goal since indoor state was to beat Katie,” Woodstock assistant coach Matt McCulley said. “We let Maura sit behind Katie last week and evaluated how Katie ran. Today, we wanted Maura to take it out from the gun and take away Katie’s kick.”

CHARLESTON – Two months ago, Huntley’s Omo Tseumah felt some trepidation that her promising senior track and field season might not get off the ground. She finished it Saturday right where she wanted to be all along, atop the medals stand at the IHSA Girls Track and Field State Meet. Tseumah, who learned in late March the pain in her left (takeoff) knee was nothing of real concern, soared over 5 feet, 8 inches at Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brien Stadium to edge Lyons Township’s Emma Haugen for the Class 3A high jump title. The two traded spots from last year. “She’s a sophomore, she can get it back the next two years,” said Tseumah, who will jump at Marquette next year. “It’s a huge relief, honestly. You have a goal, you have a dream and you know you can get it. But you always have thoughts that you may not make it.” Jacobs’ Lauren Van Vlierbergen took fourth in the Class 3A 1,600 meters and anchored the Golden Eagles’ 4x800 relay team of Molly Barnes, Tori Tamburrino and Sam Baran that finished fifth. Cary-Grove’s Joslyn Nicholson improved five spots with her final attempt to take fourth in the triple jump. Trojans freshman Nikki Freeman was seventh in the discus. Crystal Lake Central’s Claire Dalman cleared 11-9 for fifth place in the pole vault. Huntley’s Anthonia Moore took ninth in the 400. Tseumah cleared 5-8 on her first attempt, which gave her the lead over Haugen and Belleville West’s Kelsey Shannon. Tseumah went through her ritual of shaking her arms, shaking her legs, stretching, puling up her socks, shadow boxing and visualizing her upcoming attempt. “I don’t box, but it calms me down at one point, then it

pumps me up, too,” Tseumah said. “I bounce on my feet because I’m supposed to bounce when I jump.” Tseumah had not made 5-8 since her record jump in the McHenry County Meet on April 20, but found her best jumps again at the most opportune time. Van Vlierbergen wrapped up her standout season with two medals. She ran 4:55.94 for fourth in the 1,600 and ran a strong leg to take the Eagles from near last to fifth in the 4x800. “I wanted us to try to finish ninth and get a medal,” Van Vlierbergen said. “But some girls were close and I wanted to get as many of them as I could.” Nicholson jumped her career-best 37-5 on the final jump of her high school career. She drew inspiration from her mother Mary Lou, who died when Nicholson was 7, and from friend Alex Scarbro, a 2012 Grayslake Central graduate who died last fall. Nicholson and Scarbro used to play travel basketball. “It was awesome,” Nicholson said. “I had this huge surge of energy go through me. I did it in honor of them. That’s a huge accomplishment.” Dalman got on a roll Saturday when she hit 11-0 on her first attempt. She switched from a 12-0 pole rated at 140 pounds to a 13-0 pole rated at 145. She made 11-0, 11-3 and 11-6 on her first attempt, then cleared 11-9 on her third try. “I’m really excited, I surpassed my goal for the season, so it feels great,” Dalman said. “I felt confidence building and building. I got more positive and really started to enjoy it today.” Freeman was unable to improve her throw from Friday’s preliminaries, but still earned a medal in her first state meet. “It’s pretty exciting,” Freeman said. “It’s upsetting to fall back [in the standings], but it’s great to be [on the medals stand].”
