Marfan Syndrome is a connective tissue disorder that affects tall people. “I always want to do community service,” Ahrens said. “I want to use this as a platform for me to inspire and encourage people to volunteer.” As Miss Tall International, there’s a possibility she will travel to some of the chapters abroad, but Ahrens said the thing she’s most excited about is the opportunity to travel around the country, meet new friends from Tall Clubs and reconnect with old ones.

VILLA PARK – There’s a sign hanging in the window of Cater Fitness in Villa Park declaring the business the official trainer of Miss Tall International. There also could be a sign on the Prairie Path, calling itself the official walking path of Miss Tall International, or signs on any number of local shops, restaurants and businesses, claiming their fame as haunts of Miss Tall International. Villa Park itself could have a sign, because on June 26, the village became the official home to Miss Tall International. Valerie Ahrens, 47, of Villa Park, was crowned Miss Tall International at the conclusion of the Tall Club International’s competition last month in Las Vegas. She previously was crowned Miss Tall Chicago in December and competed for the honor against Miss Talls from across the country. “I represent Tall Clubs International,” Ahrens said. “The bottom line is that I’m humbled and ecstatic. It’s a huge honor.” About 18 months ago, Ahrens joined the Paramount Tall Club of Chicago after an existing club member noticed her height and suggested she attend a meeting. Ahrens stands at 5 feet,10 and three-quarter inches and just meets the club’s height requirements for women. The Miss Tall competition was Ahren’s first pageant, but it followed the same structure as others. There was an opening dance number, an interview with judges, an evening gown portion

New tricycle has Villa Park resident eager for fundraising ride By SARAH SMALL ssmall@shawmedia.com VILLA PARK – Throughout the winter months, Nicole Kramer was looking for someone to go bike riding with her. Despite the cold temperatures, she kept an eye out for any and every mild day when she could get out on her new bike. Kramer, 19, of Villa Park, was eager to ride, because the bike, a Catrike recumbent trike, was awarded to her in mid-November, thanks to a grant from the Ataxian Athlete Initiative. Through this program, seven specially designed bikes were given to people throughout the United States and Canada with Friedreich’s Ataxia. “I was really excited, but it did stink a lot getting (the bike) in the middle of November,” Kramer said. Friedreich’s Ataxia is a debilitating genetic disorder that is characterized by a loss of coordination, curvature of the spine and a heart condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy; other

symptoms often are present in people with the condition. Kramer was diagnosed when she was a sophomore at Willowbrook High School. This weekend, Kramer will join her friends and family to participate in the second annual Ride Ataxia biking event in Channahon, Ill. The event offers four-, 12-, 32- and 52-mile bike rides, and proceeds from the event benefit the Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance. “Last year, I just volunteered because I didn’t have a bike,” she said. “This year, I got the Ataxian Athlete grant to get a bike.” There never was any question in her mind whether she would bike this year, she said. The biggest debate was if she would do the 12- or 32-mile ride. Kramer settled on 12 miles so she would be back in time

Ride Ataxia’s inaugural event in the Chicago area was last year. The ride drew 230 participants and raised more than $60,000, said Kelly Kramer, Nicole Kramer’s mother. “It was unbelievable to see the amount of support,” Nicole Kramer said. “You know the community’s big, but it’s different when you’re actually there and see it.” During Ride Ataxia in

2012, Nicole Kramer tried a few recumbent bikes on display from a vendor and then decided to apply for the grant herself. The application was extensive, her mother said, and required the applicant to research the type of bike he or she wanted. Nicole Kramer also needed to write about how she planned to use the bike and how it would be beneficial. She chose the Cartrike brand, which rides on three wheels and “really flies,” she said. “It’s great because it’s given her so much independence,” Kelly Kramer said. This year’s ride is Sunday, and Cole’s Crew, the fundraising team backing Nicole Kramer – whose mother calls her Cole – has recruited 21 members and raised $3,735 as of Wednesday. They have set a goal of $5,000 before the weekend is over. Kramer’s older brother, Alex, is doing the 52-mile ride this year with a group of friends, as are an assortment of relatives, friends and people who joined after hearing her story. In 2012, Nicole Kramer became the first recipient of the Willowbrook High School Warrior Award, which is given annually to a member of the school’s communi-

ty who has shown strength when faced with personal struggles. After the award was given, Raphael Garcia, a classmate who she knew casually, approached her to get involved in Ride Ataxia. This year, he’s recruited his father and sister to ride, too. “I’m excited to see everyone,” Nicole Kramer said. “I’m excited to see Raphael and his family. Some of my other friends are doing it this year. Last year, I waited too long to ask them, and many of them were busy.” In addition to riding her bike and helping organize Ride Ataxia, Kramer is working in the financial aid office at College of DuPage, taking an online summer class and getting practice with a different set of wheels. She’s taking driving classes this summer at Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital in Wheaton and learning to control the car’s speed with hand controls. Depending on how things go, she might get her driver’s license by the end of the summer. Despite the new freedoms that come with driving, Kramer still is thankful for her bike. “It’s just the freedom of going anywhere when I want to do it, instead of always asking people to take me places,” she said.

PATCHING THINGS UP Children with amblyopia (“lazy eye”) will be happy to know that they don’t have to wear an eye patch for as long as was once thought necessary. Police to increase patrols along 900 block of West North Avenue By SARAH SMALL ssmall@shawmedia.com VILLA PARK – The Villa Park Police Department announced its plans to increase its patrols in the 900 block of West North Avenue after 13 people, including eight juveniles, were arrested in the area July 12. About 11 p.m. July 12, a team of Villa Park officers arrived at the area to serve an arrest warrant and check the area. During this time, they came into contact with about 20 people near the multifamily building at 941 W. North Ave. Ultimately, 13 of these people were arrested; eight of them were juveniles, and five were adults. The charges included unlawful consumption of alcohol, possession of marijuana, possession of drug para-

phernalia and resisting arrest. Three of the subjects were wanted on arrest warrants, and the tenant of the property was also charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor. In recent weeks, the police department has gotten many calls complaining of loud noise, public drinking, loitering, littering and fighting in this area, Sgt. Dan McCann said. The police plan to continue a high enforcement of this area in the coming weeks for as long as necessary, he said. The 900 block of West North Avenue includes 18 condo buildings that frequently generate police activity, police said. Residents are encouraged to call 911 to report suspicious activity or disturbances in the area.

Villa Park police aid in capture of alleged bank robber By SARAH SMALL ssmall@shawmedia.com VILLA PARK – Villa Park police on July 11 arrested a man accused of robbing a bank in Wisconsin earlier this month. Randy Glenn Paulson, 55, of Friendship, Wis., was charged with bank robbery in the FBI’s U.S. District Court of Madison after allegedly robbing Grand Marsh State Bank on July 3 in Grand Marsh, Wis. According to investigators, Paulson entered the bank, pointed a handgun at a teller and said, “This is a robbery.” He collected cash from the tellers’ drawers and then approached a customer at the bank, demanding her car keys. When the woman did not answer, a teller at the bank volun-

teered her keys instead. Paulson left the area in the teller’s car and was arrested during the evening of July 11 in Villa Park. Dan McCann, detective sergeant with the Villa Park Police Department, said the department was contacted by the FBI and notified Paulson might be in the area. They were given his name, photo and description of the car, which had Wisconsin license plates. Detectives went to pa-

trol the area, making one of their first stops at Brer Rabbit Motel, 65 E. North Ave. Paulson’s car was in the parking lot, McCann said. Officers surrounded the vehicle and arrested him when he came out to the car, he said. Paulson appeared in federal court in Madison on July 12, and his arraignment is scheduled for today. If convicted, Paulson faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison.

Lombard man files lawsuit against Los Burritos Mexicanos By SARAH SMALL ssmall@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – A Lombard man filed a lawsuit against Los Burritos Mexicanos Tuesday, claiming he contracted E. coli after eating at the restaurant in June. The restaurant, 1015 E. St. Charles Road, was closed from June 14 until the beginning of July after several people became sick after eating at the restaurant. In all, 31 cases of E. coli were confirmed in individuals who ate there, while 10 of those people were hospitalized, according to the complaint filed. Seattle-based law firm Marler Clark, which specializes in representing individuals with foodborne illness,

and Newland & Newland of Arlington Heights filed the suit on behalf of Quinten A. Hayley of Lombard. According to the complaint, Hayley ate at Los Burritos on June 7 and allegedly began experiencing symptoms of a fever, watery and bloody diarrhea, severe abdominal cramps and vomiting June 10. He visited the emergency room June 11, where he received treatment, gave a stool sample and later was admitted to the hospital where he stayed until June 14. The stool sample he gave in the hospital tested positive for E. coli. Los Burritos Mexicanos was not available for comment.

According to the survey of over 200 young women between the ages of 18 and 30 years, nearly four women in ten said that their first experience with indoor tanning was with their mothers. I live in downtown La Grange, and I would like to talk about the confusion between stop signs and yield signs. A stop sign is when your car comes to zero miles per hour. But over the past year, the spray paint/graffiti has expanded to areas beyond the rock and it’s just a matter of time until the graffiti spreads to other areas of the high school campus. two unmarked, brand new SUVs used by the Lemont Police Department. I cannot understand what the purpose of that could be. When you look behind the police station at 127th Street, it looks like a used car lot for police cars. We spend thousands of dollars detailing those cars to identify them as police cars for our officers, and now we have two new cars, and they’re unmarked and we don’t know what they’re being used for on the street. What happened to the program that was started years ago where police officers were issued brand new bicycles to do bicycle patrols in the community in the summertime to enhance community relations? What happened to the bicycles? Now we’ve got them in unmarked cars.

LOMBARD – Tickets are on sale for the Lombard Town Centre’s annual wine and craft beer event scheduled for Aug. 10 in the ballroom of the Westin Hotel and Conference Center, 70 Yorktown Center. Downtown Lombard’s wine shop and tasting bar, The Vino Cellar, and Famous Wines of Forest Park are partnering to provide the wines, craft beers and scotches for the evening. Suspicious incident reported Two female juveniles were walking south on Ardmore Avenue near Kenilworth Avenue at 10 p.m. July 11 when a man

o matter how flu season shapes up this year, one thing’s for certain: Not everyone older than 50 is going to get vaccinated. Despite universal recommendations urging every person 6 months and older to get vaccinated, many Americans don’t get the flu shot, said Dr. William Schaffner, chairman of the Department of Preventative Medicine at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. “Absolutely, unhesitatingly, no doubt. You should get your flu shot. And especially older people,” said Schaffner. “People 50 and older are the age group that will experience the most complications from influenza and they will be more serious complications, such as getting pneumonia or ending up in the hospital hooked up to a ventilator. Dr. Lisa Grohskopf, medical officer with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said “For more mature people, getting the flu shot is really important because as we age the immune system doesn’t respond as well as it did when we were younger.” But just how good is the flu virus? Last flu season, the vaccine was 56 percent effective when it came to curbing flu-related medical visits, according to a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For people 65 and older, that number dropped to 9 percent effectiveness for the season’s most prevalent flu strain. Those statistics are eye-opening, but they should not stop you from getting vaccinated. “It’s not a perfect vaccine like the measles or polio vaccine is perfect. But it’s the best we have right now,” Schaffner said. “I like to use the quote from Voltaire: ‘The perfect is the enemy of the good,’

meaning that waiting for a perfect vaccine in the future is a sure way to catch the flu this season. While some people believe that the flu is just a bad cold, it’s really a “devilish virus,” Schaffner said. “It can take a healthy person and in just 48 hours put that person in intensive care,” he said. Older people are more at risk than the general population. People who are more likely to experience serious complications from the flu are “older, have an illness such as diabetes, are overweight, have underlying heart or lung disease or” whose immune systems are compromised, Schaffner said. “This is the one (illness) that year in, year out sends more than 200,000 to the hospital and causes over 30,000 excess deaths,” Schaffner added. The experts have answers ready for the doubters who say, “I got the flu shot, and then I still got the flu!” You may have caught the flu, but it made the illness milder, Schaffner said. “If you went to the doctor, you avoided going to the hospital,” he added. Older adults do a better job of getting their flu shots, with about 66 percent of people 65 and older vaccinated each year, Schaffner said. “One way to look at it is, that’s a huge achievement, but on the other hand, one-third of folks were not vaccinated,” he said. While the big push to get a flu shot begins in September when the vaccine becomes available, don’t hesitate to get vaccinated later in the season. “The peak month for the flu is February,” Schaffner said. A flu shot is “so easy to get,” especially at walk-in clinics offered at many pharmacies and grocery stores. You can’t get the flu from getting a flu shot, but it can come with some side effects, Grohskopf said, such as soreness, redness or itching at the site, or a mild fever or cold, which is preferable to the flu.

How to catch up on retirement savings By Money Living lot of people stress the importance of starting a retirement fund early, but many people don’t keep up with their retirement fund or even make one at all until it seems like it’s too late. However, there are plenty of ways to start saving money to catch up with your retirement plan.

Set a goal A good start to catching up on your retirement fund is setting a realistic goal for the minimal amount of retirement savings that you’ll need. The essentials are really all that you’ll need to consider at this point. Once you’re more caught up on your savings, you’ll be able to set the bar higher. Every bit counts You should start saving money as soon as you can. Even a few dollars or a few cents is useful to your retirement fund. Even if you don’t have specific accounts or investments in order, you can still start saving up some cash to put into the fund later. Get out of debt Debt is one of the many things that can destroy a retirement fund. Take care of as much debt as you can at the moment, and create a plan to lower your debt in the next few years. This is another area where every little bit counts. Even the smallest contribution toward lowering your debt can save you from hassle in the future. Create a budget and monitor your spending Creating a budget is a great way to decrease your spending and maximize your savings for your retirement fund and future investments. hy not slow things down and enjoy the experience of travel by taking a train trip for your next vacation? “There are many appealing aspects of train travel,” said Regis St. Louis, Lonely Planet travel writer and coordinating author of the 2012 “USA” guide. “For one, it forces you to slow down and enjoy the scenery. You’ll have more of a connection to the lands you’re passing across — rather than just soaring over at 35,000 feet oblivious of the lavender fields, river valleys and other great scenery you might be missing.” The benefits For some trips, flying can’t be avoided, but traveling by train opens up a world of possibilities with abundant benefits. Trains: ◆ Drop you right in the middle of the city where all the action is rather than at an airport in the middle of nowhere. ◆ Hit big cities and picturesque small towns. ◆ Allow you to take more luggage for free. ◆ Allow you to stretch out and move freely with seating that may be reserved or open, more comfortable and possibly with facing seats. ◆ Have sleeper cars where you can rest and wake up in another state or country. You can also save money on a hotel room by taking an overnight train to your destination. ◆ Offer more selection of departure/arrival times. ◆ Have no security checkpoints. ◆ May be less costly (unless you splurge) and are more environmentally-friendly. “There’s also the camaraderie,” St. Louis said, “It’s easier to meet other travelers on a train. I think there’s something about this old-fashioned mode of travel that makes people more open to the delights of travel and sharing stories with others around them. … You’re also likely to meet like-minded travelers and that’s one of the great parts of travel — learning about other cultures and ways of life.” Traveling by train beats driving, too. You’ll avoid busy roads and the stress of traveling on the highways. “You can sit back enjoy the scenery, curl up with a good book or even do a bit of writing — letters, journals, stories — train travel seems conducive to the literary mind,” St. Louis said. Train travel fits your budget, whether that means senior discounts on Amtrak,

coach seats and a bag of snacks carried along, or high-end trains with luxury accommodations and world-class chefs. Fancy a drink? Many trains boast bar and cafe cars, which are a good place to relax with fellow passengers. Some trains even have smoking cars. Where to go There’s no easy characterization of train travel. There are iconic long-haul journeys such as a trip along the Trans-Siberian railway, which stretches more than 5,500 miles from Moscow to Vladivostok, Russia, and takes seven days if you don’t stop. Other transcontinental trips traverse America, Canada and Australia. First-time train riders might prefer a shorter trip and crossing a region rather than a whole country, or picking one country such as France or Italy, which have excellent train infrastructure. On another short trip, Amtrak’s Adirondack leaves the skyscrapers of New York City behind and cruises through the Hudson River Valley past West Point, then hugs the shoreline of Lake Champlain for 50 miles before ending in Montreal 11 hours later. History fans can step back in time and take a short journey on an old-fashioned steam train in southeastern Brazil or past Victoria Falls in southern Africa. St. Regis’ favorite train trip is the scenic journey in the Douro Valley from Porto to Pocinho in Portugal, a beautiful half-day adventure into the heart of Portugal’s most spectacularly set vineyards. Here are three other recommendations from St. Regis: ◆ In Canada, Via Rail operates the Canadian which makes the three-day journey between Toronto and Vancouver. The scenery, which takes in the northern Ontario Lake Country, the western plains and the looming Canadian Rockies, is spectacular, and you’re likely to see eagles, elk, moose and even bear. ◆ The narrow-gauge Durango & Silverton train shows off Colorado’s scenic side. This vintage steam-spewing locomotive climbs from 6,500 feet at Durango to more than 9,300 feet in Silverton and takes around 3 1/2 hours to make the 45-mile journey. ◆ How about having breakfast in London, lunch in Paris and returning to England in time for evening cocktails? Hop on the Eurostar for a 180-mph trip that travels via Chunnel under the English Channel and departs every hour.

Comfort, elegance and great food at La Tosca VILLA PARK – You can look all you like, but it’s unlikely you’ll find a more authentic Italian experience than La Tosca anywhere else. As popular as Italian cuisine is, it can be tough to find a unique experience. La Tosca achieves this with ambiance, class and fine food. When you drive up to the restaurant on St. Charles Road, it immediately stands out for its exterior, with an Italian villa-style façade and terra-cotta roof. Inside, you find they’ve somehow turned a dining room with an immensely high ceiling into an intimate setting, featuring lots of dark wood trim and a few faux cracks on the wall – evocative of Italy’s famously ancient architectural heritage. As a dining companion and I settled in for a recent evening, we were presented with menus for dinner, the night’s specials and wines. A nice touch on the wine menu are the suggested pairings of wines and meals. Knowing that I would likely opt for a pasta dish, I selected a glass of Ruffino Chianti. “Pair with pasta with tomato and grilled beef,” the menu says. For an appetizer, my companion and I shared the

Mozzarella Alla Tosca, which layered prosciutto, mozzarella, roasted peppers, leafy greens and olive oil. It made for a light and savory enticement – very tasty. Neither of us was in the mood for pizza, although La Tosca has an extensive list of options. I went for the Cannelloni Alla Romana: “Homemade pasta stuffed with meat and spinach with a basciamella tomato sauce.” My companion was tempted by several items on the specials menu, but ultimately went with the Saltimbocca: “Veal medallions, sage, prosciutto, mushrooms and mozzarella cheese in a demiglazed wine sauce.” After I enjoyed a minestrone soup that came with my entree, and my companion had polished off a delectable garden salad, we were, in short order, presented with our main courses. Before even taking a bite, we knew we’d be leaving with takehome bags; the portions were attractively presented and so generous we knew we wouldn’t be able to finish everything. I will admit that I heat up a frozen dinner for lunch now and then, and store-bought cannelloni is one of my more

Compared to what’s served at La Tosca, the microwaveable meal can hardly be considered food. I found myself letting each bite linger for a moment as I experienced all the subtle shadings of flavor. And, as expected, half the entree ended up being my lunch the next day, and much better than anything I could get at the grocery store. My dining companion said the veal medallions were tender and rich in flavor, and we were surprised to see that they also

came with a side of pasta with marinara sauce. They really don’t want you going home hungry! For dessert, I went for the chocolate truffle gelato, and my companion chose the profiterole – mini cream puffs in a chocolate mousse – which our server confessed was a favorite. We ended up sharing each other’s portions, and, if pressed, I’m not sure I could choose between the two, as both were extremely rich and sweet. You might feel inclined to

Ronnie Dunn to headline Rockin’ for the Troops By DEBBIE BEHRENDS dbehrends@shawmedia.com Ronnie Dunn admits he doesn’t know much about Operation Support Our Troops – America, but he’s willing to help veterans in any way he can. Best known for being half of the country music duo Brooks & Dunn, he is the headliner for the eighth annual Rockin’ for the Troops benefit concert Saturday at Cantigny Park in Wheaton. Along with Dunn, performers include Motown tribute band The Voices, the Kimo Williams Band playing rock tributes and original music, plus rockers Arra. Advance tickets are recommended.

“I got a call from my manager, and we were able to do it,” Dunn said in a recent phone interview. “We’ve done countless things to support the troops – concerts at military bases all over the country. It would be great to not have troops in harm’s way, but at the same time, there’s always going to be an opportunity to serve and pay tribute to them.” And expressing appreciation to the troops is what the volunteer-based, nonprofit OSOT-America is all about. For 10 years, it has embraced the mission: “to support the morale and well-being of American forces by providing comfort, resources and education to them and their families, both while

they are deployed in harm’s way and after their return.” The packing and shipping of care packages to Ronnie Dunn deployed military members is one of the things the organization does. As for Dunn, supporting the troops is not the only charitable work he has undertaken lately. He was among the stars at Toby Keith’s Oklahoma twister relief concert July 6. “We were actually on the ground outside Oklahoma City when the tornado came through Moore,” Dunn said of the May tragedy, noting that because of

expected bad weather, he had opted not to fly back to Nashville from a concert in Santa Fe, N.M. He said when his bus driver learned a tornado had touched down in Moore, “he fired up the bus, and we hit the road; we drove parallel to that storm system all the way to Memphis.” That experience may find its way into a song in the future as Dunn’s music continues to evolve. In response to people who call his new music “not country enough,” Dunn said, “There’s a place for that. I embrace it all. I can come out of a good, rocking song and dive into a hard-core country song. We’re at a time in this business when we’re redefining the rules.”

Unity will help in the spring.” MacDonald and fellow senior Anthony Esterly also were top pitchers during the summer. Behrendt and MacDonald were on travel teams with the hope of catching the eye of a potential future college coach. Behrendt has traveled out of state three times this summer with one more trip planned with the Lombard Lightning while MacDonald had one out-of-state trip with the Lombard Sliders. The Rams won’t feature as many seniors next season as they did in the spring. Behrendt brings the most experience back, while a mix of inexperienced seniors and varsity newcomers will be forced to step in. “No position is locked up,” said East coach Joel Pelland. “Guys can outwork other guys and come in and earn a spot next year so it’s pretty open. I’m excited about that, to see what kind of work these guys are going to do in the offseason to improve themselves.”

LOMBARD – One aspect of summer baseball is the learning and development part of future varsity players. The other aspect is that summer is prime recruiting season. Two Glenbard East seniors, Tyler Behrendt and Jimmy MacDonald, are chasing the college dream. The recruiting process can be stressful, but has so far been exciting for the pair. “It’s exciting, but then also you’re like, ‘this is business,’ too,” said Behrendt, who has already received interest from small local schools via emails. “You have to work and it’s not just, ‘you get a free ride.’ Not everyone gets this opportunity.” “It can be stressful if you let it be, but if you just take it as ‘people actually want me,’ you can relax and it’s fun,” MacDonald said. Behrendt started on the mound in the Rams’ opener of the Phil Lawler Summer State Classic Tournament on Monday before the game was suspended due to rain. He has emerged as the team’s ace in the summer and will probably take that role into the spring. Behrendt made just one pitching appearance during the spring, but became a regular in the lineup and totaled 89 at-bats. Getting his first taste of varsity-level baseball, Pizur has more than held his own and fired a complete game against Montini in an 8-2 win in a regional quarterfinal of the summer state playoffs on Tuesday. After playing at the freshman level in the spring, Pizur has handled the jump both on and off the field. “It feels good to be playing out here with good competition,” Pizur said. “My teammates are great. In the beginning you don’t really know anyone, but they welcome you right in.”

VILLA PARK – Following the abrupt end to the spring season, the summer has been one filled with positive signs for Willowbrook. After losing the playoff opener in the spring, the returning Warriors were eager to get back on the field for summer ball, and the resulting play has coach Vic Wisner excited. “My senior leadership this summer has been the best I’ve ever seen,” Wisner said. “A lot of young guys have stepped up. Our sophomores won a conference championship, so they have an idea what it’s like to win. They’ve put a lot of pressure on the guys who are playing to make them better. Honestly, it’s been one of my more enjoyable summers just watching them grow.” Wisner described the team as his kind of players, grind it out “dirtbag” ballplayers. Seniors Mike Rothmund, T.J.
