Society have partnered together for multiple events, sometimes with the help of the library and park district. “I’m excited about getting the whole village excited about downtown,” she said. In the past year, downtown Lombard has gotten a mini face lift as businesses such as Shannon’s Deli, The Vino Cellar and others have settled into the storefronts along St. Charles Road and Park Avenue. Downtown Lombard’s newest business, Deer Fina, a women’s clothing boutique, opened just days ago. “I think a lot people think it’s because of one person,” Richardt said. “It’s not. It’s a combination of board efforts and the village.” As the new executive director, she said she’s nervous about being able to effectively respond to the requests and demands of so many people, as the position dictates. At the same time, she’s eager to continue building and promoting the downtown, and developing a destination point for residents. “I want all of Lombard to buy into the Lombard Town Centre,” she said. “You have these great business owners, and it just spirals. They’re being more self-sufficient. The business owners are leading the charge. They’re saying, ‘This is the quality we want for Lombardians.’”

LOMBARD – Sarah Richardt’s new job only can be loosely described as new. She’ll be working about two blocks north of her previous job and cooperating with many of the same people. She’s used to working in an old home styled to match the Victorian period, but now she’ll set up shop in a purple, lilac-decked office as she makes the transition from the senior programming coordinator of the Lombard Historical Society to the executive director of the Lombard Town Centre. Richardt, 43, has lived in Lombard with her husband, Dan, and their teenage daughters for 14 years. She began her job with the Lombard Historical Society in 2009. Last year, when the Lombard Town Centre was hiring for the executive director position, Richardt applied, was interviewed and was the runner-up candidate. She didn’t get the job, but when the downtown organization decided to rehire for the position earlier this month, she was the first pick. “(The board) wanted someone quickly so that business owners didn’t lose any services and the village didn’t lose any connection with downtown,” she said. She was approached by the town center’s president, Walter Smith, to fill the position and began working as interim director July 8. In a whirlwind month, her last day at the historical society is Aug. 9, and she begins as official director of the Lombard Town Centre on Aug. 12. “I loved the spirit of downtown,” she said. “I just think it’s cool. I like it down here. I like the history, I like the business owners.” One of the things she said she’s most looking forward to is strengthening existing partnerships in town and developing new ones. VILLA PARK – Feral Fixers, a nonprofit organization whose goal is to humanely control the feral cat population, is struggling to reach its target number of cats before a grant expires in September. The organization received a private grant to help it neuter cats in the Villa Park area. The grant’s goal is to treat 300 cats, but Feral Fixers only has treated 150 cats so far, said Tammy McAuley, president of the organization. “We thought we would have more in the Villa Park

area,” McAuley said. The DuPage County-based organization began in September 2007 and has neutered more than 5,200 cats, including about 400 in the Villa Park area. Feral Fixers promotes the Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) policy, where feral cats are trapped in their natural habitat, evaluated, vaccinated and sterilized by veterinarians. Tame cats then are adopted into good homes through local no-kill shelters. Those interested in helping, donating, volunteering or learning more can visit www.feralfixers.org.

VILLA PARK – There’s more than schoolwork on Nina Metsovaara’s schedule for the coming year. True, the 24-year-old Willowbrook High School graduate will complete a year of coursework at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where she is studying to be a family nurse practitioner, but she also will spend a good portion of her time teaching classes for the youth at the Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center. Earlier this year, Metsovaara was named a 2013 Schweitzer Fellow. This program is one that focuses on service, learning and improving the health of the underprivileged. Her interests in the sectors of family nurse practitioner and public health education stemmed partially from the volunteer work she did at clinics in the city during her undergraduate studies. “I started volunteering at a women’s health clinic, and during that time, met a lot of community health practitioners who really inspired me,” she said. With an additional interest in social justice, she found it a good fit to work as a health educator at another clinic in the city, and from there found her interest in pursing a family nurse practitioner degree. It was earlier this year that she decided to apply for a Schweitzer Fellowship, which is open to graduate students. As a fellow with the organization, she is responsible for developing and implementing a community service project that works to improve the health of underserved people. She describes the initial application process as something similar to writing a grant proposal, coupled with an interview. After being awarded the fellowship, Metsovaara was responsible for reaching out to the community group with

which she wanted to partner. With a background in health education and a passion for it, she already knew what the nature of the project would be, but it took some time to settle on a community partner. “At the last minute, I had this idea, ‘I’m going to work at the juvenile detention center.’” During the coming year, Metsovaara will implement a holistic health curriculum, where she will prepare course materials and facilitate workshops with the youth at the detention center. Currently, she’s in the process of preparing the curriculum but expects to be at the center teaching classes by the fall. In addition to developing a service project, Schweitzer Fellows are responsible for developing a sustainability component to the project to help it continue after the fellow moves on. “I thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if I could partner with an organization that would come in and do the work after I left?’” she said. Metsovaara found a second partner for the fellowship project with the Illinois Caucus for Adolescent Health, that will work with her and help continue the workshops after her fellowship year is complete. She also has plans to develop her project so youths at the detention center can be trained as peer mentors and begin teaching their peers. The list of topics Metsovaara wants to cover during the year is extensive. She has plans to talk about HIV and sexually transmitted infection prevention, sexual violence and healthy relationships, job skills, building self esteem, creative expression, reproductive health and more. “I’m trying to throw as much together as I can,” she said. “The curriculum can’t build on itself, because some of these people are only here for a week before getting transferred out.”

VILLA PARK – A Bellwood man was charged with multiple felonies related to gun use and ownership after he was searched by a DuPage County Sheriff’s deputy during a traffic stop July 17 near Villa Park. Darryl A. Harrison, 31, of the 200 block of Marshall Avenue, Bellwood, was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, one count of unlawful use or possession of a firearm or ammunition by a convicted felon, deface firearm ID markings, possession of a firearm without a valid FOID

card, possession of ammunition and possession of drug paraphernalia. With Harrison was Julius Lumpkin, 24, of the 5700 block of West Midway Park, Chicago, who was charged with driving while license suspended and multiple traffic offenses. At 9 p.m. July 17 near the Brandywine subdivision in unincorporated Villa Park, a sheriff’s deputy stopped the vehicle Lumpkin was driving after observing multiple traffic violations. Harrison was scheduled to appear in bond court July 18; Lumpkin posted bond and was released.

Police talk suicidal Villa Park woman off bridge SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA ELMHURST – Elmhurst police helped stop a suicidal Villa Park woman from jumping off a bridge Monday, officials reported. The 31-year-old woman was reported suicidal and missing to Villa Park police Monday

evening. About 10:30 p.m., when her cellphone was traced to First and West streets in Elmhurst, several afternoon shift officers responded to the area to search for her. Police requested Metra and Canadian National train traffic stop when they believed she might have been on the railroad tracks, accord-

ing to an email from Elmhurst Chief of Police Michael Ruth. Elmhurst police officers Steve Wright and Tim Westering found the woman about 11 p.m. standing on the Canadian National Bridge directly over Route 83, threatening to jump and kill herself. They began talking to her while other El-

mhurst officers immediately closed Route 83 from North Avenue to St. Charles Road in both directions with assistance from Addison police. The parking lot exits from Elmhurst Crossing also were closed, said police. After several minutes, the woman agreed to take officers Wright and Westering’s hands.

She safely was taken off the bridge and transported to Elmhurst Memorial Hospital for evaluation, police said. Route 83 was opened, and train traffic resumed a short time later. Chief Ruth praised all officers involved for their role in saving the woman’s life.

Fight the summer learning loss

As our students continue their summer vacation, we need to be reminded of the loss in academic skills and knowledge that is inherent with a three-month break from school. Known as the “summer learning loss,” studies show that, on average, students will drop one to two months in grade equivalency in reading and math skills during the summer. For low-income students, this gap increases to three months behind grade level. Teachers often spend the first few weeks in September COMMUNITY reviewing past material and VOICE fundamental skills. So what can be done to David Larson counter this learning loss? While still enjoying the flexibility of summer schedules, there are a few ways families can be intentional about maintaining and advancing their children’s academic skills. The following are proactive steps to ensure your child is keeping pace academically: • Take advantage of summer school offerings. Each of the Glenbard high schools has a variety of summer offerings. There are opportunities for enrichment, credit recovery and bridge classes. • Check your school’s suggested reading list. Many schools’ websites list recommended books that are highly regarded. Often these books will be prerequisite readings for classes during the next school year. • Develop a leisure reading plan. Research shows students who read five or more books during the summer will maintain or experience gains in their reading scores. Parents are encouraged to make good use of the quality local public libraries that we are privileged to have in our communities. • Visit a local museum or landmark. We are fortunate to have a wealth of museums, zoos and arboretums in our communities and within a short drive. You and your children will be amazed at the educational gems in our area. Summer learning through reading can be a community-wide priority. There are a variety of roles that public agencies, community-based organizations, cultural institutions and public schools can play in prioritizing the importance of reading. I know I will take full advantage of the summer schedule to catch up on my reading. Immigration enriches, strengthens economy Starting in the late 1800s, large numbers of immigrants from all over the world were lured to the Chicago area for the tremendous opportunity for low- and high-skilled work in railroads, canals and heavy industry. Without immigrants, the place we call home would not be as economically developed, culturally rich and deeply diverse as it is today. The Chicago area is a testament to how legal immigration helps enrich and strengthen the economy. But because of our country’s broken immigration system, we cannot take advantage of the enormous opportunity that legal immigration delivers. In Washington, I am working to fix the system. Here’s where I stand: The first action we must take is to secure our border. One aspect of this deals with the hundreds of thousands of people who attempt to cross the U.S.-Mexico border every year, and in increasingly dangerous areas. Our open border gives incentive for criminals to traffic humans, weapons and drugs into America. This profession causes bloody turf wars in border towns like Ciudad Juarez between drug cartels trying take control of the best smuggling routes into America. Not only do these fights involve brutal violence on the Mexican side of the border, the open routes give criminals easy access into the U.S., where many more innocent people and agents have been claimed victim. Another urgent security fix deals with foreign travelers who overstay their visas, who make up 40 percent of those here illegally. They arrive here legally and simply never leave. People overstaying their visas are nearly impossible to track, posing a significant national security risk in a post 9/11 world. Once we pass measures to secure the border, the House can work on individual bills, voting on each separately. For example, we can produce legislation that will attract workers through high-skilled visas, grant seasonal permits to agricultural workers through a guest worker program, and set

up a process by which undocumented immigrants can get right with the law. By working through small bills that fix targeted problems, we will ultimately solve the bigger problem in a way that is transparent and easy to understand. This is in direct contrast to what the Senate has passed – one massive, complicated bill that few lawmakers have actually read and understood. And while it is unlikely that the Senate bill will come to the House floor, we have already found common ground and taken measures to fix our broken system. We have encouraged opportunity in America for foreign workers while creating jobs and growing our economy at home. The House passed a bill that I cosponsored last year that would create a new green card category for immigrants who have received science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) doctorates and master’s degrees from our world-renowned universities. It allows the best and the brightest to stay in America after graduating to advance U.S. innovation, create jobs, and help keep us globally competitive. Also, this year, I introduced a bipartisan bill to create a number of highskilled work visas for Koreans that will benefit our economy and strengthen our trading partnership, all while protecting jobs that can be filled by U.S. workers. You can ask almost anyone from the Chicago area about their family history, and you will frequently hear them start with immigrant stories based on the hope for a better life. Like the Chicago area, America’s economy can benefit from an effective, legal immigration system.

About 7:10 p.m. Sunday, Villa Park police patrol officers were assigned to the area of Yale Avenue and Ridge Road for a report of a fight involving teenagers. On arrival, the officers found that a 17-year-old male juvenile had been stabbed during a fight with another juvenile. He was able to describe his assailant to officers before he was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove for treatment of a stab wound. Officers searched the area and located the suspect, a 15-year-old juvenile, about 9:20 p.m. in the 400 block of North Ardmore Avenue. The suspect was taken into custody without further incident.

LOMBARD – The village of Lombard’s July community blood drive collected 207 pints of blood during its two-day run at three locations throughout the village. There also were 20 deferrals from the drive. Carol Bauer, executive coordinator to the village manager, has been coordinating the village’s blood drives since 1988 and said the most recent blood drive was one of the most successful ones on record. “We’re so glad the community continues to support our blood drives,” Bauer said. “It’s a selfless act to donate blood – every pint counts.” The final blood drive of 2013 is scheduled for Sept. 11 and will coincide with the 12th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. For this event, the village is looking to partner with individuals, businesses, churches and community organizations who wants to help support and promote the drive. The Midwest Dairy Council awarded Glenbard District 87 a $15,600 grant to support its Fuel Up to Play 60 initiative, which encourages students to eat healthy and participate in physical activity for at least 60 minutes every day. All four high schools in the district were chosen from hundreds across the country that were seeking funding for nutrition and physical activity improvements. Each chosen school received as much as $4,000 from the grant program. Funds for Fuel Up to Play 60 will support various district efforts, including a student fitness fair, Live Life Well Week’s Healthy Cooking Challenge and the purchase of heart rate monitors for physical education classes.

She was a supporter of Rails to Trails bike trail restoration projects, a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and she enjoyed traveling with her husband to their homes in Colorado and Florida. She loved to be with family and thoroughly enjoyed her grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Gary Nillissen of Sycamore; two daughters, Marlies (Dennis) Otmaskin, Hopkinton, Massachusetts, and their children, Alex, Greg and Elizabeth; and Yvonne (Tom) Tierney, of Elmhurst, and their children, Georgina and Eleanor. 8NEWS BRIEFS West Nile virus detected in Lombard LOMBARD – West Nile virus was detected in mosquito trap set by the Illinois Department of Public Health last week, according to the village of Lombard’s Facebook page. Multiple traps are set by the Illinois Department of Public Health and DuPage County throughout the area, but residents are still encouraged to be cautious and take precautions to avoid mosquito bites. For the past several years, West Nile virus has been found in Lombard, and this year’s appearance was not unexpected, according to the village. West Nile virus is a mosquito-borne virus that can cause symptoms of fever, headaches, fatigue, nausea, vomiting and other symptoms. Most healthy adults are able to recover from West Nile on their own, but children, the elderly or those with compromised immune systems are most at-risk. Residents are encouraged to use insect repellent when outside, wear long pants, sleeves and socks when possible and to be cautious during the evening when mosquitoes tend to bite more frequently. People should also remove any standing water near their homes, which is the breeding place for mosquitoes. Any questions about West Nile in Lombard can be directed to the village’s Public Works Department at 630-620-5740.

New assistant superintendent joins D-44 LOMBARD – The District 44 Board of Education welcomed a new assistant superintendent of finance and operations this month. Ted Stec has 12 years of experience, including service at Burbank School District 11 and Argo High School District 217. He earned a marketing degree from Miami University and a master’s in education from Roosevelt University and Type 75 from Lewis University. One of Stec’s projects prior to joining Dist. 44 raised a half million dollars to complete a “green initiative,” which resulted in saving about 30 percent on energy costs, according to a Lombard Elementary District 44 news release. The project also was used to educate students on the importance of caring for the environment through energy conservation.

Residents cool off at water park By SARAH SMALL ssmall@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – As people in the western suburbs sweated through a five-day heat wave last week, Lombardians had a chance to cool off at Paradise Bay Water Park, 437 E. St. Charles Road.

The water park, which opened in 2009, is operated by the Lombard Park District. The zero-depth pool features three slides, a 12-foot dive well, 3-meter and 1-meter dive boards, a lap pool and more. The streak of 90-degree temperatures broke Satur-

day morning, and temperatures this week dropped to the high 70s and 80s. Paradise Bay Water Park is open from 12:30 to 5 p.m. and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 12:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.

Mary Beth Versaci’s article titled “Zoning Board supports controversial gas station” is a textbook example of why we need a Constitutional amendment that ends corporate personhood. In the article, Trustee Ketter acknowledges that the living breathing voting community is against this proposal out of concern over numerous health and environmental issues. But under the current Supreme Court interpretation of corporate personhood, Buchanan Energy could seek protection of the Fifth Amendment. This amendment states that private property cannot be taken for public use without due process of law or just compensation. I, and most likely Buchanan Energy, am under the assumption that the DuPage County Zoning Board doesn’t have the money or legal expertise to challenge Buchanan Energy over this zoning application. Human citizens need to take action and show your support for amending the Constitution to end “corporate personhood.”

I’m calling about comments about paver bricks and how stormwater can pass through them. If that’s true, I called the (village of Downers Grove), when I got my bill for the amount of ground your patio and driveway cover that they came up with that new tax on, and they claim water won’t pass through those, or even a gravel driveway. They consider gravel driveway the same as an asphalt driveway. Or, if you have a wooden deck with spaces between the boards for water to go through, they still count that as if water won’t go through it. Somebody doesn’t have all their figures and facts straight, especially at the village.

I am responding to the “Bugged by baby buggies” Sound Off post. We live in La Grange because this is a family community with activities for families. I attended the craft fair this past weekend and, yes, I did bring my stroller to tote my toddler around in. My stroller is necessary to keep my son comfortable and safe. It doesn’t take up any more room than an extra person would or a wheelchair. My suggestion is if you are bothered by the congestion that festivals and fairs bring, stay away from events and areas where small children might be, or just stay home.

We as taxpayers are getting hit from every angle: federal, state and county. District 87 needs to live within their present means and allow the tax rate to decrease. Because of the whole pension problem, everyone looking for more tax dollars needs to stand down. We already are drowning in debt, we do not need any more. No referendum.

Heroin use a ‘public health crisis’ By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com DuPage County has seen 15 suspected heroin overdose deaths so far this month, coroner Richard Jorgensen said. If confirmed, the number would be a record for the county for a single month. With 18 confirmed heroin deaths so far this year, DuPage County is on track to surpass last year’s record-setting 38 heroin deaths. “We’ve been having this problem for a long time, but last month was a marked increase in suspected drug deaths,” Jorgensen said. “We’re way outside anything we’ve seen in the past.” The 15 deaths from July are awaiting toxicology reports. DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin called the recent upswing in heroin use a “public health crisis.” He said that heroin today isn’t the same as the drug found a few decades ago, and the demographics for those who use it have changed, as well. “What we’re dealing with is a drug that is more powerful than anything we’ve dealt with before,” Berlin said. “Heroin today is 10 times stronger than what it was in ’60s or ’70s. And the fact that people can snort it or smoke it instead of inject it makes it more attractive to young adults.” Users of heroin in the county increasingly fall between the ages of 16 and 24, said Kathleen Burke, CEO of the Robert Crown Center. “The perception is that heroin is a drug from the old days that nobody messed with,” she said. “But with the low cost, rising access and the rising use of pain pills as a gateway has made it more prominent.” Those who have died so far have come from a range of backgrounds and areas, Jorgensen said, although Burke said the recent deaths include more youth than ever before. Rates of middle and high schoolers using heroin have increased, she said. That rise,

she believes, also is caused by social pressure. Pressure, she said, that some choose to alleviate with $10 bags of heroin. “The research we did initially indicated there were some potentially underlying mental health issues that kids are not being diagnosed with,” she said. “It’s not necessarily people experimenting with other drugs. Instead, it’s people who are trying to normalize, feel like they think everybody else feels.” Tom Stamas, vice president and clinical director of substance abuse treatment center Serenity House, said now, half of his clients are addicted to heroin. That number drastically has increased from an estimated 15 percent a decade ago. “In the past, you’d say there were more risk factors, but we’ve seen so many children coming from well-adjusted families that I don’t know if that’s the case anymore,” Stamas said. “We have seen many individuals who come from good families who don’t have mental health issues, and yet they’re coming to us.” Stamas said addiction is more complicated than personal weakness. “Just know that help is out there, and that’s why treatment centers are out there – to help people,” he said. “Today, there is a stigma of treatment where people try to keep things secret.” Burke said education is the only prevention of heroin use. The Robert Crown Center is attempting to change the dialogue with young adults about heroin use to focus on its dangers. Berlin, too, stressed the importance of supporting potential users and former addicts and saving the hard sentencing for those who distribute the drugs. “We cannot arrest and prosecute our way out of this problem. It’s too big,” he said. “You can arrest somebody for possession of heroin, we can send them to prison for a year, two years, and they’re going to get out in half the time, and they’re going to keep using.”

The wine bar’s name, D.O.C, refers to Italy’s designation of origin for the fruit of the grape. We started our meal with a lusciously creamy tomato soup prepared in-house with chicken stock, oregano and basil. In a perfect pairing, the soup arrived with a slice of baguette toasted to a lovely stage of crisp, and covered in delectable, melted mozzarella. My dining companion particularly enjoyed the soup’s subtle spiciness. Next, we split an order of two chicken salad sliders, featuring a beautifully balanced blend of juicy chicken and grapes with crunchy celery, and served on buttery rolls for wonderful contrasts in texture. The sliders were topped with arugula for a peppery zing. My companion ordered the smoked turkey panini, again served on a delicious bread. The tasty sandwich included avocado, pancetta, fontina, seasoned tomato and field greens. A standout side dish was the sauteed spinach, with a fresh burst of flavor that really popped. The menu extends to crab cakes and pairings of cured meats and cheeses, plus salads, flatbreads and entrees such as cedar plank salmon, short rib tacos and steak. I opted for the chicken saltimbocca, served with a comfort food side of mashed potatoes and al dente asparagus. The chicken medallions are wrapped in prosciutto and served with a touch of melted mozzarella. We overestimated our appetites, and had generous leftovers for the next day. Dessert choices also include wine snow cones in flavors of Moscato, peach, Zinfandel and blueberry. The bistro’s “Wine for Dummies” list includes flights for sampling, and the bar also delivers wine-based cocktails, bottled craft beers and a few

added lessons in single malt Scotch. The restaurant’s website notes the bistro, which carries more than 100 labels, wants to introduce people to the world of wine without intimidating the uninitiated. DOWNERS GROVE – Football season is already here. The Chicago Bears are still weeks away from kickoff, but local fans don’t have to go far to get their football fix. The Chicago Thunder, a semi-pro team in the MidStates Football League, has set up shop in Downers Grove and will play its home games this season at Downers Grove South High School, starting with the home opener Saturday night. Several players are from the western suburbs, and the Thunder are making games accessible to families in the same area, starting with $7 tickets for adults. Tickets for kids are $4 or less. “Kids with report cards, veterans and active servicemen, police officers and firemen are free,” said Thunder general manager and Darien resident Steve Sliwka. “Anybody from the Downers Grove Panthers or other youth football leagues are free. All they have to do is wear their jerseys.” Fans who attend games won’t just get to see a Thunder team that has had tremendous success since its inception in 1991 (10 league titles and two national championships in 2007 and 2008), but also a group of hardworking players who are out on the field solely for the love of the game. Teams in the MSFL play according to NFL rules, which means full speed and full contact. The bumps and bruises are the same; the difference is the way the players have to deal with them. The green slopes heavily from back to front making it a premium to keep the approach shot below the hole.

ELMHURST – Improving your golf game can become an obsession. York golfer Kerri Carlquist has learned to love the finer aspects of the game in an effort to improve each shot. Carlquist, who will be a senior on this fall’s Dukes squad, has made that the focus of her summer. She has noticed the growth in her game as a result. “There’s always room for improvements,” Carlquist said. “It’s been really cool this summer to break down each shot and learn about each shot. We get so excited when all the girls are playing well. It’s always really fun because our coaches are such great encouragers. They’re always looking for ways to build us up.” Playing in a team setting was an easy transition for Carlquist since both her parents played golf and got her into the sport. “My whole family on both sides has been really into golfing, and it’s actually made it a family sport, which is nice,” she said. “Getting to play on Father’s Day with my dad and grandpa was great.” Playing with her family at her home course of River Forest Country Club has made for many cherished memories. This summer, her time at River Forest has been spent mostly on lessons. “(The lessons) have improved my game so much,” Carlquist said. “I’ve been getting out to the range a lot. I’ve been working hard in lessons with my short game.”
