LOMBARD – Before being elected to the village of Lombard Board of Trustees in 2011, Trustee Peter Breen considered a run for the House of Representatives. He opted instead to serve his community through municipal government, but slightly more than two years after being sworn in to the Lombard board, Breen has announced his candidacy for the Illinois House. The 36-year-old will run in the March 2014 primary election for a chance to represent the Republican party in the November 2014 general election. He is running for the seat in the 48th Legislative District, which is held by Rep. Sandra Pihos, R-Glen Ellyn. “After my time as acting village president, a lot of people approached me about going to a higher level of government, in particular because of my ability to affect change,” Breen said. “Having other people confirm what I thought would be a good opportunity helped me make this decision.” He has lived in Lombard with his wife, Margie Manczko Breen, for eight years and said he wanted to run in his home district. He said his decision to run for the House of Representatives was prompted out of frustration that the state is not doing enough to foster business growth and effectively provide services for residents. During his time on the Lombard Village Board, Breen said his priorities have been

Trustees oppose Ken Loch rezoning request By SARAH SMALL ssmall@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – The village of Lombard Board of Trustees held a special meeting Friday in which it adopted a resolution objecting to a rezoning request that was filed with DuPage County and involves the Ken Loch Golf Links property. The petition for a rezoning request was filed on behalf of Kensinger Realty Investments, which owns the

31-acre Ken Loch property off Finley Road in unincorporated Lombard. The request is to rezone the property from its current single-family residence designation to a general residence designation, which would open the possibility of creating high-density town homes, apartments or condos. Despite this request, no development proposal for the property has been submitted to DuPage County. In its resolution, the Vil-

lage Board cites its objections to rezoning the Ken Loch property and states this request is inconsistent with the currently adopted DuPage County Comprehensive Plan, which identifies the property for open space, it is inconsistent with the Countywide Land Use Plan that identifies Ken Loch for single-family residential purposes and it is inconsistent with the Lombard Comprehensive Plan. Village Board reviewed the Comprehensive Plan as it relates to the Ken Loch property and supported its previous decision to keep the area designated for open space land use and preferably a golf course. Trustees also added language in the plan that would allow development on up to 25 percent of the property so a clubhouse, restaurant, pro shop or structure could be built on the property to support a golf course. The future of the Ken Loch Golf Links property has been a hot topic in Lombard for the past year, as village trustees held a series of public hearings on the appropriate land use designation for the space after being contacted by a developer interested in building high-density homes last summer. Community members spoke out against using the property for anything other than open space, and in June, the trustees voted to amend the Comprehensive

Plan so that it remained consistent with residents’ wishes. The rezoning request at the county level will be heard by the DuPage County Zoning Board of Appeals during its Thursday meeting. The meeting will be at 6 p.m. at the DuPage County Administration Building, 421 N. County Line Road, Wheaton. What: Deer Fina clothing boutique Where: 3 S. Park Ave., Lombard Hours: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday Information: facebook.com/deer. fina.5

Glenbard East High School, and lives in West Chicago. She got her first experience working in the clothing boutique industry thanks to her mother, who used to operate a baby boutique. Then, she helped her sister run a boutique for three years in West Chicago. The business closed, but thanks to a supportive husband, she decided to try again. “I wanted to go back into merchandise buying, but my husband said, ‘No, we’re going to do your dream,’” she said. The business’s name, Deer Fina, pays partial trib-

ute to her husband who is an avid hunter. “Fina” is Kozlowski’s middle name, which also means “fine things,” she said. Despite growing up in Lombard, the village’s downtown district wasn’t an attraction for Kozlowski, who admits she never visited the area as a teen or young adult. It was within the past year the she took St. Charles Road to visit her parents and realized the new activity along St. Charles, Park Avenue and Main Street. “When I came to visit my mom, I saw the [new businesses],” she said. It was the large, storefront window in the property at 3 S. Park Ave. that attracted her to the location. There was no sign advertising the property was for rent, but she was persistent and finally got her top pick. “The windows are always important,” she said. “They

will tell everyone what kind of a boutique it will be.” She also likes the location because of the train station and busy St. Charles Road. Many of her customers from the West Chicago boutique already have visited her new location in Lombard, and in her first week in business, she has had dozens of other people pass through the doors. She describes her clothing as contemporary fashions that are appropriate for women between the ages of 20 and 50. Because of a high demand for it, she also offers extended sizes. The most expensive items in the store are a line of handcrafted bags from Columbia that run for about $100 a piece, but the majority of the clothing is significantly lower in prices, she said. “When I opened, I did a lot of research,” she said. “I want something that’s cute,

but affordable. I can find similar styles and the same quality for lower prices.” Shoppers to Deer Fina are unlikely to find other people walking around town with the same outfit, Kozlowski said. She only orders a few of each item, and when they’re gone, they’re gone. She said she does this as a courtesy to her customers so they have something unique. She also offers styling and fashion advice to the people who come into her shop. “If something doesn’t look right, I’ll suggest something else,” she said. “It’s not always about making a sale. I always like to hear what [the customers] have to say. It’s not about being greedy and trying to make a sale. “I just want to be successful. I would like to open three locations; I don’t want any more.”

LOMBARD – In May, Irene Kozlowski and her husband were getting ready to head to Yorkville and sign a mortgage on their first home when her cellphone rang. It was a number she didn’t recognize, but she answered anyway. On the phone was the Lombard Town Centre, calling with the good news that 3 S. Park Ave., a property that caught her eye at the beginning of the year, was available for rent. “I saw this property, and I had to have it,” she said. Now, three months after the phone call, Deer Fina, a contemporary woman’s clothing boutique owned by Kozlowski, is open for business. The grand opening was two weeks ago. 8NEWS BRIEFS Villa Park to host National Night Out event SPORT TINTS Many professional athletes favor colored contact lenses known as “Sport Tints” because they improve vision without clouding up or falling off. Golfers mostly wear gray-green contacts that make the grass so vivid that they seem to be able to see individual blades of grass. Baseball players who wear amber contacts report being able to better pick up the red seams on the baseball when they are standing up at bat; football players generally prefer blue tints, which heighten contrast and visual acuity. Yellow is preferred by hunters and other outdoors people for its ability to enhance contrast in overcast, hazy, low-light conditions outdoors and to filter blue light for sharper focus. Tinted contacts may help anyone improve vision and performance. Most optical shops have tint samples you can use to help you determine which colors are best for you. Try to evaluate the lenses in lighting conditions that match those you will experience most often during your sport. SKOWRON EYE CARE carries a large selection of quality eyewear, including designer frames. For more information about eyewear, please give us a call. At Skowron Eye Care, our mission is your vision. P.S. Two advantages of tinted contacts over sunglasses are that they do not have any distortion or extra weight and they do not scratch easily.

VILLA PARK – Local residents are invited to spend an evening with neighbors, community members and Villa Park police officers during the village’s National Night Out event. This is the 30th anniversary of the event, which is hosted annually by police departments across the country and works to develop strong relationships between community members and local police departments. National Night Out is happening Tuesday throughout

the country, and the Villa Park event will run from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Lufkin Pool, 1000 S. Ardmore Ave. There will be food, drinks, activities and a pool party. The Villa Park Police Command Center and several police vehicles will be on display. Police officers and members of the village of Villa Park will be at the event to meet residents, as will members of the Villa Park Target store. Target is a national, corporate sponsor of the event. State bill allowing DuPage County stormwater fee awaits governor’s signature lot less; you’ll get credit for it. It’s the ultimate in responsible behavior policy.” The bill requires a two-year planning period including feasibility studies, public hearings and public outreach and education before the implementation of any fee. During the process, the county board also would have to vote whether to create the fee. If approved, the fee would present a new cost for property-owning nonprofits in DuPage County. Nonprofits are exempt from property taxes but not fees, DuPage Coun-

ty Board Stormwater Committee Chairman James Zay said. It’s a situation that has frustrated churches and nonprofit organizations in Downers Grove, where village officials approved a municipal stormwater fee earlier this year. Church and nonprofit leaders there say the fee has cut into their ability to provide services and assistance in the community, and have organized petitions and made public comments at village council meetings this spring and summer. That focus soon

might shift to the county. Zay said churches and other nonprofits would not be exempt from any possible stormwater utility from the county, but that officials would discuss opportunities for credits for using permeable pavers, rain barrels, retention ponds and other measures that reduce stormwater run-off. While the village of Downers Grove cut property taxes nearly $2 million this year to account for the separate fee, the county has not said whether it would cut property taxes in a similar fashion.

Gov. Pat Quinn plans to sign a bill that allows DuPage County to create its own stormwater utility fee. The bill passed both state legislative houses May 16 and was sent to the governor June 14, according to spokesman Dave Blanchette. He said Quinn supports the bill and plans to sign it before the Aug. 16 deadline. DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin said the county stormwater fee

would be more equitable than the current method of using property taxes to fund stormwater infrastructure, because a fee would be based on the amount of stormwater displaced by a property. “If you’re a big developer and you put down a large, 50,000-square-feet parking lot of concrete, and you displace a lot of water to your neighbor downstream, you’ll pay more,” Cronin said when the House passed the bill. “If you take steps to install semipermeable pavers and rain barrels at home, your fee will be a

The congressman cooperated with the original Office of Congressional Ethics investigation, Kittredge said, turning over documents, submitting himself and his staff to interviews and waiving his right of confidentiality, an “unprecedented” decision. She said the congressman had no problem being open and releasing the information to the office and to the public because “we did nothing wrong.” “It was a legitimate trip for legitimate purposes,” Kittredge said.

Dad has worn several hats: A farmer, manager of a Gospel Group, the coal industry, and retired from Sunbeam Corp. Dad has a sense of humor: One day he told me as I was gaining weight, one of two things had to happen; either I need to push the table away from me or push myself away from the table. Dad loves his family, married for close to 50 years and counting, with 14 children and lots of grandchildren. He loves his church family, Sunshine Baptist Church where he has attended and still attends for close to 60 years. Some of his favorite things to do is read the bible (man of faith), watch baseball (go Chicago White Sox), and share stories with his families (and Dad has some exciting stories to tell). As we celebrate this 100th birthday we take this opportunity to Thank God for keeping Dad in good health and spirits and to say “We love you very much”! At his 99th birthday celebration he said, and I quote: “If you want to be seen, stand up. If you want to be heard, say something. If you want to be recognized sit down.”

U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam (R-Ill.) is under investigation for a possible breach in ethics, according to a news release Friday from the House Ethics Committee. Roskam, who is the chief Republican deputy whip, is one of four U.S. representatives under investigation. The investigation was launched after recommendations from the Office of Congressional Ethics were sent to the house committee. The committee already has reviewed the recommendations for 45 days and has another 45 days to decide whether to conduct full investigations of any of the four representatives. The committee does not comment on pending investigations, according to a committee spokesperson. Roskam’s office has released details of the findings of the Office of Congressional Ethics and has said “Rep. Roskam fully complied with all laws, rules and procedures.” The Office of Congressional Ethics investigated a fact-finding trip for the Ways and Means Committee that the congressman and his wife took in October 2011 to Taiwan, said Roskam’s communications director, Stephanie Kittredge. During the trip, Roskam met with government officials and industry leaders for congressional work, Kittredge said. According to Kittredge, the office alleged that the Taipei

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Villa Park woman donates kidney to husband By SARAH SMALL ssmall@shawmedia.com VILLA PARK – Certain dates stand out in Phillip Coleman’s mind. Oct. 12, 1979, is the day he married his wife, Kathleen. Others are the birthdays of his four children, Ryan, Molly, Tim and Kelly, and May 29, 2013, the day he began his new life. On May 29, Phillip and Kathleen, with their children, arrived at Rush University Medical Center and underwent surgery for Phillip to receive one of his wife’s healthy kidneys. Couples rarely can donate organs to one another, but Phillip and Kathleen are a perfect match. Phillip Coleman, 59, of Villa Park, spent the past five years on dialysis after being diagnosed with kidney failure. He went for treatment every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Last year, the Colemans decided to try for a transplant. “He was on dialysis for five years; we finally decided

bump Phillip up on the list. She thought the kidney would go to a stranger until a nurse called to tell her she was a match to her husband and that she could give her kidney to him. “I’m O-positive [blood type], so I’m able to donate to anyone,” she said. “They took his blood and cross-matched it. When they called back and said, ‘You’re a match,’ wow, it was amazing.” That was in August 2012, and during the following months, Kathleen and Phillip needed to go through extensive rounds of testing to ensure their bodies could handle surgery. “It’s a process,” Kathleen said. “I just don’t want people to think you go in and the next month you’re donating a kidney.” There were some delays where we thought, ‘Maybe it isn’t meant to be.’ I kept saying, ‘It is.’” Finally, the tests were finished and they were ready to donate. On Phillip’s last day of dialysis, the Colemans brought small gifts and treats to the technicians at the facility to thank them for years of service. When the family arrived at Rush University Medical Center on May 29, they were brought to a private room. Kathleen was first, so she was prepped for surgery and went into the operating room at 9 a.m. while Phillip and their kids waited. He went into surgery at 11:30 a.m. Kathleen woke up about 4 p.m. and recovered with her daughters. About 7 p.m., they received news that Phillip was out of surgery and that the new kidney already was working. He was in the intensive-care unit as doctors monitored him for signs of rejection, and the two were reunited the next afternoon.

“It was truly a miracle,” Kathleen said. She was discharged from the hospital after three days and went to recover at her mother’s house; Phillip went home two days later. At home, Phillip and Kathleen had help from their grown children and from friends at St. Alexander Catholic Church in Villa Park who brought dinners to the house. “You really need a lot support during this time; it was definitely nice to know someone would be there with a meal,” Kathleen said. The first two weeks of recovery were more difficult for Kathleen, whose organs had been moved around during the surgery so doctors could access and remove her kidney. Phillip felt better after surgery because the functioning kidney was removing impurities from his body, something that hadn’t happened naturally in years. On July 15, he celebrated his 21st missed dialysis appointment. A few nights before, Phillip and Kathleen sat together and each enjoyed a glass of wine, something they hadn’t done in years. He has fewer doctor appointments now, is thinking about going back to work and is reclaiming his life. “I have more time,” he said. “I’m getting stronger; I’m spending a lot of time with my wife.” Kathleen went back to work at the Villa Park Jewel-Osco on July 15, and after a few followup checks with doctors, she’s expected to completely return to life as normal. As Kathleen and Phillip sat at the kitchen table of their home in Vila Park telling their story of hospitals, tests and surgery that consumed the past year, they laughed and reminisced about the hospital food, their teams of doctors and recovering together. “I don’t consider it taking care of each other,” Kathleen said. “I see it as us getting better together.” “We talk more, we bond more, we get to be together,” Phillip said.

How to treat the flag Commending a kind cab driver To the Editor: I would like to take a moment to commend a 303-Cab driver who went out of his way last evening to make a long, arduous day more pleasant. An older lady and I arrived at the Westmont train station at approximately 11:30 p.m. after having ridden on an Amtrak train for more than five hours. The cab was right there at the Metra station as requested, and the driver assisted my friend into the cab. When we arrived at Mayslake Village, he helped her into her building with her bags. When she had difficulty getting into the building, he got out of his cab and started to help her out, but by that time she had the door opened. This was all done without the meter running! When he dropped me off at my apartment, he waited to see that I got in OK. Thank you ever so much for your caring and assistance. It was greatly appreciated.

To the Editor: It is nice that we honor our country on patriotic holidays like Memorial Day and Fourth of July by displaying the American flag, and of course some places in the city like Spring Street have a permanent flag display. However, there is a proper way to display our flag and in improper way. The improper way is a sign of disrespect for it, and our country. There is a very easy to find and read website that can be found by searching: Proper care and treatment of the U.S. flag. The website covers many aspects of the subject. Unfortunately, there are presently many infractions of these regulations in the local area, particularly flags on the ground. Because of the Fourth of July holiday, I picked up two in the last couple days. Let’s give our most important national symbol the care and respect that it deserves. It is very important, and certainly not that difficult.

Regarding the lady who takes her child in the stroller to the craft fairs in La Grange and claims that it only takes up the space of another person, it does not. The width and the depth of the stroller takes up much more space. And children are not the people who buy things at those fairs. It’s just making things more congested.

Bad place for a speed trap I think it’s extremely disrespectful when I see the police in La Grange Park and Brookfield doing surveillance or using a radar gun while parked in a cemetery or a funeral home parking lot. I look at those places as peaceful and restful, and they should be given some respect. I’m sure people who are visiting a funeral home for arrangements or the cemetery for a loved one could benefit from a place to do that.

I hope La Grange village officials do a better job in investigating the new tenants or property owners of the old YMCA space than they did when they wanted a mixed-use facility built back in the 2000s. Restaurant reviews

Wine and dine with small plates at Salt Creek Wine Bar In a fast-food land of heaping piles of french fries, 32-ounce soda buckets and extra-large pizza slices, it’s nice to find a place where you can eat small and eat slow. At the Salt Creek Wine Bar, you can do just that. On a recent Friday night, I traveled to Brookfield in anticipation of a nice meal at the wine bar, and got just what I was hoping for: several small plates to be enjoyed over a good glass of wine – in my case, sangria. Located just off the Brookfield train station near the corner of Grand Boulevard and Prairie Avenue, the Salt Creek Wine Bar has been a staple of the town’s restaurant community for many years. The atmosphere inside is relaxed and comfortable, filled with plenty of tables, a long bar and a performance area. Work by local visual artists is displayed on the walls, and music plays quietly in the background. My dining companion and I arrived about 6 p.m. and momentarily were surprised to be the only ones in the restaurant. However, other diners slowly trickled in, and the place was filling quickly by the time we left about 8:30 p.m. I suspect the reason for the later rush was a young woman with a guitar who was setting up in a corner as we departed. I wish I had stayed on for the music, because it’s a standard feature of the wine bar, with local acts playing everything from folk to jazz. The live music is a big draw, I’ve been told, and it pairs perfectly with the ambiance, food and drink. Because it’s a wine bar, wine definitely is the focus here. If you’re not a wine fan, there’s still a good beer and cocktail list, but with so many options and a knowledgeable staff, anyone should be able to find a wine they like – or several to try in a flight. The food complements

Bar should be a destination where you go to sit a while, enjoy a good meal and conversation, and not worry about bringing home a doggie bag. You’re there to take it in, eat leisurely and enjoy the overall experience. I absolutely enjoyed my experience and plan to return soon. With a menu of tapas pizza, creative sandwiches and small plates made for sharing, there’s plenty still to try. When I return, I’ll check the musical offering first and bring as many friends as I can get to accompany me. Good food is good, but good food accompanied by good friends, good music and good conversation is something more – it’s a feast.

Montini graduate works to earn starting job as Minnesota’s field goal kicker By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com

What sets you apart from the other kickers competing for playing time?

Matthew Piechalak – mpiechalak@shawmedia.com

Andrew Harte (top) of Downers Grove celebrates a game-winning field goal during a Montini playoff game in November.

Record books Andrew Harte has two entries in the IHSA record book, as well as others not noted by the IHSA: 76: PATs in a season, tied for fourth on the IHSA list 10: PATs in a game, tied for 17th on the IHSA list 112: Consecutive PATs made, third all-time nationally on NFHS list

What can make me stand out is I can make the kick every time. If my range is 50 yards and someone else’s is 55 but I make it every time, I feel confident I’ll be the guy they turn to. As long as I make my kicks, I should be fine. My high school long was 54 yards with no wind. Right now, I’m hitting from 50 both ways on the field.

What have you been doing since you arrived on campus? I’ve been lifting and doing conditioning every morning and afternoon, and kicking with all the snappers and holders every day. Camp starts Aug. 2, so I’m getting

What changes have you noticed between high school and college football? At Montini my freshman and sophomore years, I was coached, but by the time I was a junior and senior, and for sure my senior year, I was my own coach because they had trust and confidence in me to do things on my own. Now I’m starting over again, and the coaches, like coach (Jay) Nunez, are as hands-on as they can be and spend time working with me.

Do you think playing at Montini and playing in big-time games will help you? I think it definitely can. You don’t really know what a situation is like until you’re in it. At Montini, we had big crowds and we played in big games. Now you’ve got to do it in front of 50,000 people every week, but I think I can do it. At Montini, I was in some high-pressure situations, and I think that will prepare me for what I have to do at Minnesota.

What’s the biggest adjustment you’ve had to make so far in your college career? It’s early – you have to wake up at 5 in the morning to get your running in, and then you’re lifting in the afternoon. It’ll be interesting to see what it’s like once camp starts. Right now, the coaches can’t be there for any football activities so they’re around when you’re running, conditioning and weight lifting. I’m definitely in the best shape of my life.

LBS/VPA

MINNEAPOLIS – Andrew Harte doesn’t plan on taking the traditional route of most college freshmen. On campus at the University of Minnesota since June 10, the Downers Grove resident and former Montini football player plans to be on the field when the Gophers kick off their football season Aug. 29 against UNLV. If things go according to plan and Harte avoids sitting out the season with a redshirt, he could be the one doing the kicking in that game. Jordan Wettstein handled Minnesota’s field goal duties last season, but he has graduated. Harte is one of three freshman competing for playing time as a kicker, and he intends to win that battle.

Big Ten gridiron Local football talent gears up for 2013 season with Nebraska, NU, more SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA

Jack Allen College: Michigan State High school: Hinsdale Central Class: Sophomore Position: Offensive lineman Splitting time between left guard and center last season, Allen started 12 contests and played in all 13 of the Spartans’ games as a redshirt freshman, anchoring an offensive line that helped produce 149.4 rushing yards a game in 2012. Named to the Big Ten Conference all-freshman team, Allen also was a first-team freshman All-American by the Football Writers Association of American as well as the Sporting News. He is the No. 1 right guard on the Spartans’ depth chart heading into preseason camp.

Doug Diedrick College: Northwestern High school: Montini (Woodridge) Class: Sophomore Position: Superback An all-state linebacker in high school, Diedrick has transitioned to the other side of the ball in college to become a utility offensive player for Northwestern. After sitting out during a redshirt year in 2011, the Woodridge native saw his first collegiate action last fall and played in two games. He caught one pass for 13 yards against South Dakota

State and rushed three times for 12 yards on the year. He could see more action this season in NU’s spread offense.

Reilly O’Toole College: Illinois High school: Wheaton Warrenville South Class: Junior Position: Quarterback Sharing the quarterback spot with Nathan Scheelhaase last season, O’Toole played in seven games to Scheelhasse’s 10 but posted better numbers in completion percentage (74.7), touchdowns (six) and efficiency rating (142.7). O’Toole also rushed for a pair of touchdowns and finished second on the team in total offense. Last season, he set the program’s single-game record for completion percentage when he completed 83.9 percent of his passes (26-of-31) against Charleston Southern. As one of the most experienced QBs on the roster, O’Toole once again could see plenty of playing time.

Kyle Prater College: Northwestern High school: Proviso West Class: Junior Position: Wide receiver Prater made his NU debut last fall after transferring from USC in spring 2012 and added depth to the Wildcats’ already deep receiv-

er corps. Prater saw action in all 13 games last year, catching 10 passes for 54 yards. In his first game at Ryan Field, he caught three passes against Vanderbilt, and he hauled in two passes in the Wildcats’ 34-20 win over Mississippi State in the Gator Bowl. After a full year in the Wildcats’ system, Prater could be poised for a breakout season.

Tommy Schutt College: Ohio State High school: Glenbard West Class: Sophomore Position: Defensive lineman Schutt, who originally was committed to Penn State University, was an immediate contributor to the Buckeyes as a freshman. Appearing in 10 games, including a start against Central Florida in Week 2, this defensive

lineman finished the 2012 season with four tackles. The 6-foot-2, 303-pounder is expected to have an increased role this fall.

Austin Teitsma College: Illinois High school: Glenbard South Class: Junior Position: Defensive lineman In his second season playing for the Illini last year after taking a redshirt in 2009, Teitsma played in all 12 games and recorded 15 tackles, including two solo and two tackles for loss. He twice recorded four tackles in a game (against Charleston Southern and Northwestern) and forced a fumble against Northwestern. He also was an academic All-Big Ten honoree. Heading into the 2013 season, Teitsma is the No.

1 defensive tackle on the depth chart.

Mike Trumpy College: Northwestern High school: Wheaton North Class: Senior Position: Running back After playing 13 games in his first two seasons after a 2009 redshirt year, a fully healthy Trumpy played in all 13 of Northwestern’s games last season and finished third on the team in rushing with 349 yards and three touchdowns. He also figured into the passing game and caught eight passes last season. The academic All-Big Ten honoree finished sixth on the team in scoring and fourth on the team in See FOOTBALL, page 25

Promising position By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com CHAMPAIGN – It’s not easy to break in as a college quarterback. It’s even tougher for a walk-on at a Big Ten school. That’s why York alumnus Jim Nudera switched from signal caller to tight end this offseason. The redshirt sophomore hopes the change will allow him to see the field on special teams this season for Illinois.

How did you pick Illinois?

•FOOTBALL Continued from page 24 total offense. Heading into his final season, Trumpy is expected once again to be a key contributor. Jordan Walsh College: Iowa High school: Glenbard West Class: Sophomore Position: Offensive lineman After redshirting in 2011,

What is your best York memory? Senior year collectively as a whole. We didn’t have the best year junior year. We were 4-5. I didn’t think my senior class was any more or less talented than the ones before. We ended up taking a share of the conference. It was really gratifying to see the hard work pay off.

What is your best Illinois memory? My favorite memory so far is going to San Francisco for the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl. We take it seriously,

Walsh played in seven contests last fall for the Hawkeyes, including a start against Northwestern. Playing both left and right guard, the 6-foot-4, 290-pounder also saw time on special teams. A returning letterwinner, Walsh is expected to be in the mix for serious playing time this fall. Dan Vitale College: Northwestern

but it can feel like a vacation with your friends. We really had a great time there.

What made you switch to tight end? A couple guys went down and I was always one of the bigger quarterbacks on the roster. I told the coaches I’d go anywhere they wanted me to go. It opens up more opportunities on special teams and maybe in short yardage packages. I wrestled in high school so I’m a little more physical than your average quarterback.

What was the hardest part about the transition? Adapting to the physicality. No one really hits you with the red jersey on. Driving your feet when you block is all new territory for me. There’s still a lot Photo provided by University of Illinois of work to be done with me and a lot of other guys in the Jim Nudera, a former York standout, leads his Illinois teammates onto the field before their game against Western Michigan last September. fall.

High school: Wheaton Warrenville South Class: Sophomore Position: Superback One of four true freshmen to crack the lineup in 2012, Vitale played in all 13 of the Wildcats’ games last fall. He caught his first career touchdown pass against Nebraska, had 110 yards receiving in Northwestern’s win at Michigan State, and had seven receptions for 82 yards in

the Gator Bowl. After the season, Vitale was named to the ESPN.com Big Ten All-Freshman Team and was the Offensive Newcomer of the Year award recipient. Vitale is at the top of the Wildcats’ depth chart at superback (No. 5 receiver) heading into the season. Jordan Westerkamp College: Nebraska High school: Montini (Lombard)

Class: Redshirt freshman Position: Wide receiver After redshirting his first year in Lincoln, Westerkamp will be hoping to earn some playing time this season. He was one of Nebraska’s first commits in 2012 and one of the most heralded talents in that class. The sure-handed wideout isn’t expected to start, but should see time as the No. 4 or 5 wide receiver.

Growing up I just knew that I really wanted to play ball and I told my dad I wanted to play at a Big Ten school. He was a graduate assistant at Michigan State in the early ’90s. He had the whole experience from a coaching standpoint. Illinois was just the best offer. They offered me a walk-on

spot. I talked to a few smaller schools and Ivy League schools, but Illinois was the best fit. I think from a student-athlete standpoint that it has the whole package. For an Elmhurst kid to come here and get a chance to play for a Big Ten school is pretty special.

Broncos fare better on Day 2 at 7-on-7 nationals SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA HOOVER, Ala. – Football season hasn’t even started, but Montini already has logged some miles. The Broncos headed to Hoover, Ala., for the National Select 7-on-7 Championships last weekend. Montini qualified for the event by winning the Red Grange Classic in late June at Wheaton Warrenville South and was one of 32 teams to take part in the showcase. Montini, along with another area team in Wheaton North, took on teams from all over the country in one-hand touch 7-on-7 football. Teams from 14 states descended upon Hoover, and Montini faced teams from seven different states. The trip included a tour of the University of Alabama’s school and athletic facilities, home to the two-time defending national champion. When the Broncos got on the field they struggled to a

Since all 32 teams made the bracket play the next day, Montini had a second shot and entered with the No. 26 seed. The Broncos took advantage of that clean slate and won their first two bracket games. Montini beat Foley (Ala.), 2714, and Fulton (Tenn.), 27-5, to advance to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals, Montini lost to North Cobb (Ga.), 21-11, and went to the loser’s bracket where they lost to O. Perry Walker (La.), 23-14.
