sion of the Navy created during the war. The Waves took her two friends, but she was too young at the time. “I was out in the hall, pouting, not happy about it because I could tell they were going to go without me,” she said. “And a Marine recruiter came out and started talking to me, and asked me what was wrong. And I told him the situation.” She was too young for the Marines, too. The branch was accepting women for the first time and set a minimum age of 20. Despite being too young, the recruiter signed her up, scheduled the physical and set in process the other paperwork needed so that when she turned 20, she would be ready to go. The women Marines would fill jobs at the headquarters in Washington, D.C., allowing the men to fight overseas. Although DePinto and the other women Marines didn’t see battle, they were provided the same training and boot camp to integrate

DePinto said she knew some men didn’t want women to be in the service, but she never felt mistreated. “It was rough, like all boot camp, hot and sticky,” she said. “The exercise, the chow, the marching, all of it was pretty bad. thing, you blew the whistle.” After basic, DePinto went to work in the Marine headquarter’s office in Washington, D.C. They worked six days a week with the men officers, but they retired to women’s-only barracks at night. “We didn’t have any men in the compound,” she said. “It was all run by women. If we had a problem women couldn’t do, sometimes plumbing or something, then a man would come in and it was a big deal: ‘Man aboard, man aboard.’ “And they could not go certain places. If they came into the barracks, oh boy, you had to be dressed and all.” After more than two years of service, the war ended, and her then-boyfriend Albert DePinto returned home from the European Theater. The two were married several months later, and started their family in the Austin neighborhood of Chicago. After almost 60 years of marriage, Albert DePinto died in 2003. Gwen DePinto’s bond with her fellow women Marines lasted for decades after the war. “We visited with each other after the war,” she said. “We sent pictures of our children back and forth, we were great friends.”

DOWNERS GROVE – Gwen DePinto has an easy laugh and tells stories about life during World War II in the same matterof-fact way she describes audio books from the library or her volunteering work at the Hines Veterans Affairs Hospital. So when the 90-year-old casually mentions she is a Marine, sometimes it catches people off guard. Once during a checkup with the eye doctor at the VA hospital, the optometrist asked DePinto about her service. “And I said I was a Marine,” she said. “He laughed right at me. He said, ‘You don’t look like a Marine to me. I don’t think I’ve seen a Marine who looked like you.’ I said sorry to disappoint you, but this is it.” DePinto celebrated the 90th milestone this spring. She is visionless herself due to macular degeneration, but she still volunteers in the blind center of the hospital, in addition to being an active member in the Women Marines Association. She remembers the day she enlisted near the beginning of World War II. She and two girlfriends went to sign up for the Waves, a women’s-only divi-

Little Free Library movement starts By ED MCMENAMIN emcmenamin@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Every time Kathryn Basco visits her parents in Madison, Wisc., she sees a new Little Free Library pop up on a residential block. “They probably have about two to three within a mile of their home,” she said. “And I thought it would be a perfect thing to have here in Downers Grove. Downers Grove has that sense of community that reminds me very much of Madison, and the neighborhoods are similar. I just thought it would fit in.” The decorative, enclosed book exchanges are slightly larger than a birdhouse, mounted on a wooden post, often in a front yard. Any passer-by is invited to take, return or donate a book. The grassroots movement has downloadable plans on how to build the Little Free Library on its website, but many design their own unique shelf. “The thought that someone at the end of the block could take a walk up to the Little Free Library and pick up a free book to read is endearing to me,” she said. Kathryn’s husband, John, designed and built their unique Little Free Library, the first in Downers Grove. The family stocked it with books and mounted it in the front yard of their home this month. “We’re hoping that if we built one that other people would get the same idea and put it in their neighborhood, too,”
she said. Kathryn added that she doesn’t want the Little Free Library to be a destination for unwanted books – it is supposed to promote literacy, after all. “We don’t want it to be books you might sell in a garage sale, or books that everybody may have already read,” she said. “We want to keep a mix. I put some of my favorite books that I’ve had for over 15 years in there because I’m not going to read them again, and I’d like to share them with other people. “We have had a lot of people walk by our house and stop and look in the library. Some people have taken books, some people have dropped off books.” John has already started thinking of ideas for their next Little Free Library, this one with two levels: a bottom shelf for children’s books and a top shelf for the rest. He said he will probably give away the current Little Free Library to someone else. “Already, a lot of people have been asking me to build them for them,” he said. The Basco’s current, cheerful Little Free Library is in the shape of a house. It’s painted red, white a blue with decorative wood molding. Once installed, each owner of a Little Free Library can visit littlefreelibrary.org to register their book exchange, receive a plaque with a charter number, brochures and other materials. The website also includes a map showing where each of the several thousand Little Free Libraries are located.

Ask Dr. Webster
Q: Should pregnant women be aware of any special dental considerations? A: The main consideration is that a
pregnant woman, who is understandably wrapped up in thinking about the health of her unborn baby, not forget about her own dental care. Studies have shown that pregnant women are more likely than the population at large to skip dental visits. That’s not advisable for anyone, let alone a woman whose changes in estrogen and other hormonal levels affect how the body reacts to the bacteria that can cause gum disease. Gum infections can pose a threat to the placenta and fetus and contribute to the likelihood of a pre-term delivery. Pregnant woman also tend to snack more than the average person. So a good move, for mother and baby, is to anticipate these urges and keep plenty of healthy snacks, like nuts and fruit, handy. Sugary, starchy snacks offer little by way of nutrition and are not good for teeth. The American Dental Association recommends that pregnant women eat a balanced diet, brush their teeth thoroughly at least twice a day, floss at least once a day and stick to their schedule of dental visits. Another good reason to visit your dentist during pregnancy is the fact that after the baby is born, a new mother’s time is severely limited. If you are pregnant or planning a family, talk with your dentist about steps you should take.

It took more than an hour to fish out all eight. “It would have been nice to take one home, but I know you can’t do that,” Giancarlo said. Loye put the mallards in a small cage she brought, and waited another two hours hoping their mother would return. When the mother duck never appeared, Loye took the birds to

Corralling scared baby ducks is not easy. The frightened birds scampered along the series of sewer pipes leading from one storm drain to another whenever rescuers got close. DOWNERS GROVE – Following their mother across Parker Avenue last week, eight baby ducks fell one, right after the other, into a storm drain. “They all huddled very close to their mother, and they just fell in,” said Mary Loye, a Downers Grove resident and volunteer with the Chicago Bird Collision Monitors who helped fish the birds from the sewer July 31. “It does happen pretty often.” Loye said the birds were likely following their mother across the street toward the pond shortly after hatching. She estimated the birds were a day or two old. Luckily for the clumsy ducklings, Loye, neighbors and an observant mail carrier rallied to save the small, fluffy birds. Help for the ducklings came from several directions. Postal carrier Colleen Metzger first saw the ducks July 30. After Downers Grove Public Works made an unsuccessful rescue attempt, she called the Downers Grove

Former business leader pleads guilty to fraud DOWNERS GROVE– A former vice president of a company that was based in Downers Grove pleaded guilty July 30 to a fraudulent invoicing scheme in which he obtained more than 100 company checks totaling more than $3.9 million and stole the money for himself, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The defendant, Steven M. Brazile, admitted the fraud at his arraignment after being charged earlier this month in U.S. District Court. Brazile, 52, of St. Louis, was a vice president in the unnamed company’s St. Louis office where he managed the information technology functions in that office. He pleaded guilty to one count of interstate transportation of fraudulently obtained securities.
Brazile faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, although his plea agreement with the government anticipates an advisory federal sentencing guidelines range of 57 to 71 months in prison. Brazile also agreed to restitution and forfeiture orders in the amount of $3,902,880.

Chicken coop turned real estate office This simple building originally at 4956 Main St. was home to Modjeska Real Estate from the mid-1920s until the building was replaced by the current structure in 1953, which currently houses Fleur Couture Floral. Originally, this building was a chicken coop that was extensively remodeled and turned into offices; however, Mr. Modjeska’s clients said you still could smell the chickens. Modjeska’s Realty remained in business until the late 1990s when the company went out of business. This is one of the many photos featured in the Downtown Main Street Photo Tour running through Aug. 30 and sponsored by the Downers Grove Historical Society and the Downers Grove Park District Museum.

DOWNERS GROVE – The Downers Grove Plan Commission approved zoning changes and a special use Monday that would allow developers to build a supportive-living facility for seniors in the 4200 block of Lacey Road, pending Village Council approval. Delta Development of Downers Grove and engineering firm C.M. Lavoie & Associates want to build the 120-unit facility for seniors on a wooded lot on Lacey Road facing residential streets. The supportive-living facility would employ between 40 and 50 people and house up to 180 residents, according to developers. The building would have three stories facing Lacey Road, placed behind a tall tree line. The back of the building would have four stories, but built at a lower ground level, so the top story would appear to be the same height as the front from the street. A parking lot for about 50 cars would be in the rear, and the property would include a water detention pond, according to information provided in May. During a forum hosted by developers in May, much of the discussion from residents focused not on the proposed project, but on years of frustration with Donegal Excavating, a construction company that sits next door to the wooded lot.
The construction company operates on a residential zoned lot, and some neighbors say large diesel trucks and other construction equipment rumbles in and out of the property late at night, despite their complaints to the village. Neighbors said they were concerned traffic added by the living facility could make problems worse. The plan commission voted unanimously to recommend the special use and to rezone a portion of the land from light manufacturing to single family residential. The developer’s request to consolidate three lots into a single lot also was recommended by the plan commission. The recommendations from the plan commission go to the Village Council for a workshop meeting with developers, and then to a vote for approval or denial at a second meeting. Lacey Road is Delta’s fourth attempt at building the facility in Downers Grove. A proposal for 63rd Street was denied by the village because it did not meet the fiveacre lot size requirement; an attempt downtown was denied by commissioners who said it did not meet the goals for that area of town; and a second attempt on 63rd Street fizzled after opposition from neighbors. C.M. Lavoie owner Christopher Lavoie said they hope to begin construction in October.

Township programs benefit the community Downers Grove Township is involved with multiple projects that benefit your community. Your Highway Department spearheads many of these programs, which include:
Catch basins/storm drain treatment Downers Grove Township is committed to mosquito control and each spring the Highway Department treats catch basins/storm sewers throughout the township. These catch basins are treated with larvicides that kill and prevent mosquito larva from hatching into adults. To control the mosquitos, we ask residents to keep your rain gutters clean, change birdbaths, wading pools and check your property after a rainfall to empty any pooled water.
Fall brush pickup program Our brush pickup program covers only the unincorporated areas of Downers Grove Township. Please remember that the dates below are target dates and delays due to weather, equipment failure, etc. can affect the schedule. Crews will make a pass by your house only once during the scheduled pickup period. Here are the dates of service for the pickup program: On Aug. 26, the area from County Line Road west to Route 83; on Sept. 9, from Route 83 west to Clarendon Hills Road; on Sept. 23, from Clarendon Hills Road west to Cass Avenue; on Oct. 7, from Cass Avenue west to Lemont Road;
COMMUNITY VOICE Andy Anderson on Oct. 21 from Lemont Road west to Woodward Avenue. Brush is to be placed on the parkway no earlier than one week before the pickup scheduled in each area, and no later than 7:30 a.m. on the date pickup begins. All brush must be cut in lengths less than 6 feet long with pieces no larger than 3 inches in diameter. We prefer all brush be securely bundled with string or twine; no bundle should exceed 25 pounds. Wire is not acceptable for tying bundles. Items which do not conform to these guidelines will not be picked up. It will be the homeowner’s responsibility to dispose of them.

8LETTERS Illinois Chamber head pushes pension reform To the Editor: Taxpayers should be watching with great interest the ongoing work of the special committee of the Illinois General Assembly wrestling with the tough, but essential issue of pension reform. While we are encouraged by early reports of the committee’s work, it does not dent the frustration of millions of Illinoisans who believe the time for reform was long, long ago. However, taxpayers should also be well aware that a large number of Illinois legislators have already stood up for them by supporting strong pension reform legislation. They have taken the tough vote to restore economic sanity to the state’s finances by voting for meaningful bills. Unfortunately, too many of their colleagues to date have taken the easy way out and we are still awaiting passage of a reform bill. Senate GOP Leader Christine Radogno, Sen. Michael Connelly, Rep. Natalie Manley, Rep. Emily McAsey, Rep. Darlene Senger and Rep. Ron Sandack all deserve immense credit for voting for real pension reform. They have voted for billions of dollars of savings for current
taxpayers and future generations. Illinois simply cannot return to fiscal stability without stabilizing the worst-funded pension system in the nation. These legislators recognize this reality and acted responsibly on behalf of their constituents. As our unemployment rate continues as the second highest in the nation, taxpayers are right to question our legislature’s ability to address the critical issues facing our state. But remember, many individual legislators like those above have already stood up. They simply need more help. Todd Maisch, Executive Vice President, Illinois Chamber of Commerce
Reflecting on children and domestic violence To the Editor: Right now, there are three children residing in DuPage County who must live with the effects of domestic violence-turned-homicide for the rest of their lives. On July 19, a Downers Grove man killed his wife and then turned the knife he used on himself. An 11-year-old daughter was left to deal with the trauma. Only a week later, an Addison man bludgeoned his wife to
death and attempted to kill one of his two stepsons who tried to intervene. No one can predict the devastating effect the murders will have on these young lives. At Family Shelter Service, we see the effects of domestic violence on children every day. Growing up in a violent home is a traumatic experience that can affect a child’s life, growth and development. To address the unique needs of these children, Family Shelter developed an extensive program for kids who have repeatedly witnessed domestic violence. Our individual, family and group counseling services help children deal with the effects of trauma. It is our experience that in at least half of homes where domestic violence occurs, children are present. Children typically make up 50 to 60 percent of our shelter residents. No one can predict what the outcome will be for the children in Downers Grove and Addison. Tragedies like this are an unfortunate reminder that domestic violence exists in every town, no matter the socioeconomic status or demographic. See LETTERS, page 22
Write to us We want to hear from you. Letters must be no more than 300 words. They must include your first and last name, town and a phone number for verification. We may edit them for clarity, accuracy and style. Email letters to letters@mysuburbanlife.com. The deadline is 4 p.m. Thursday for the following week’s paper.

DOWNERS GROVE – Youth baseball players at Memorial Park will compete on fields lit by brighter, more efficient lighting by the end of summer. The cooperative project by the Downers Grove Park District and Downers Grove Youth Baseball (DGYB) replaces the outdated lighting on the south field and adds lights for the first time to the north field. DGYB President Jim Sharwarko said the project will improve the playing experience and allow the growing league to play more night games. “Right now, it’s an experience to try and find a fly ball at night time [on the south field],” he said. “So we’re pretty excited about this.” He said the league has about 1,600 participants, which is about twice the number of 10 years ago. “Having, effectively, another game a night will take a lot of pressure off the other fields we play on,” he said. The new, more energy efficient lights are manufactured by Musco Lighting, a brand already used by the park district on several other lighted fields, Downers Grove Park District Park Planner Paul Fyle said.
The lights will be positioned around the perimeter of the fields, with light aimed where it is needed with much less light “spill” outside of the park than the old lighting technology. That results in less light use and less electricity, Fyle said. Sharwarko said the league and the park district talked with neighbors and agreed on a nightly light curfew of 10:30 p.m. for the north field, which is closer to homes, and a 11 p.m. shut-off time for the south field. DGYB is providing $50,000 worth of contractor labor, and the park district is contributing about $275,000 for the lights, engineering work and other materials. “We tapped into our volunteer network to get some very favorable rates on the contractors,” Sharwarko said. In addition to its local sponsors, the Chicago White Sox contributed all the league’s team jerseys this year, which allowed it to pay for the new lighting project without dipping into reserves, Sharwarko said. “We have been able to keep our participant rates flat here for the last five years,” he said. “We haven’t had a rate increase and we don’t expect to see one in the next couple years.” The project is scheduled to finish by the end of August.

A Texas man was sentenced Thursday to 10 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for possessing child pornography and having sexually explicit conversations with a 13-year-old Downers Grove girl he originally met over the Internet. Rudolph Figueroa, 46, of Corpus Christi, Texas, pleaded guilty to one count of possession of child pornography, a Class 1 felony, and one count of solicitation to meet a child, a Class 4 felony, in front of Judge Robert Kleeman, who handed down Thursday’s sentence. From March 2012 through June 2012, Figueroa exchanged text messages and spoke to the girl on
several occasions, claiming to be a 17-year-old boy from Florida, according to DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin’s office. On several occasions, Figueroa carried on sexually explicit conversations and texts with the girl knowing she was 13 years old. Figueroa originally contacted the girl over the Internet after responding to YouTube videos she had posted, according to the state’s attorney’s office. Through the investigation involving the 13 year-old girl, authorities discovered images of child pornography in Figueroa’s possession. Figueroa will be required to register as a lifetime sex offender.

It breaks down food into nutrient forms that your body can absorb. It uses enzymes, good bacteria and hydrochloric acid to break down food to a usable form. Your gut is a barrier, a tube that starts in your mouth, continues as your esophagus, small intestine, large intestine and rectum. 80% of your immune system is in your gut. When you break down the barrier (gut lining), toxins can “leak” into the blood stream leading to an immune response, inlammation and food allergies. Hippocrates, the father of medicine said… “look to the gut, there will you ind the origin of almost all human illness.”
Hi, my name is Dr. Jefrey E. Forzley with Lemont Natural Healthcare. I am a chiropractic physician and a holistic practitioner. I am passionate about helping people with chronic health conditions. I have been in practice for 28 years. As a holistic practitioner I evaluate the nervous system, immune system, endocrine system (hormones), diet essentials (Neuro-‐Metabolic Care), manage the underlying cause and use natural therapies to manage digestive disorders. here are many essentials required for proper digestion. Let’s talk about a few… Zinc is necessary to make hydrochloric acid (HCL). HCL is needed to break down food (protein) in the stomach and for production of methyl groups. Methyl groups turn on tumor suppressor genes and turn of oncogenes leading to potential cancer growth. If HCL is deicient, this results in poor digestion and a many imbalances due to a deiciency of methyl groups. HCL deiciency also leads to growth of pathological bacteria like H. Pylori, which can cause gastritis, stomach ulcers and possibly stomach cancer. Probiotics (good bacteria) are normally found in the gut. Optimal levels are needed for a proper functioning digestive system. hese probiotics are also part of your immune

system. hey play an important role in the protective barrier in your gut. Your gut makes up 80% of your immune system due to this barrier system. Antibiotics kill pathologic bacteria and infections but they also kill good bacteria and cause gut dysbiosis (imbalance). his dysbiosis can lead to pathologic bacterial, yeast and parasitic infections as well as food allergies. Digestive system inlammation is associated with IBS, Crohn’s, Celiac and Ulcerative Colitis. It is due to stress, poor diet, toxins and food allergies. Digestive inlammation leads to production of cytokines (inlammatory cells). hese cytokines travel in the blood to the brain and inlame the brain cells. he brain (mesencephalon) in turn controls the digestive system. his leads to a vicious cycle resulting in an inlammatory cascade which exponentially worsens over time. Successfully managing digestive conditions involves balancing the nervous system, digestive system and immune system as well as improving the diet, decreasing gut inlammation and detoxifying the body. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a digestive disorder that includes abdominal pain, discomfort, bloating and alternating constipation and diarrhea. he cause is unknown but theories include toxic overload, intestinal infections, inlammation from stress and poor diet generalized condition of the digestive system poor signaling from the brain to the digestive system for proper function.
Medications to treat digestive disorders can weaken your immune system and lead to infections and immune degenerative conditions including cancer. hese medications may give you symptom relief but have side efects and DO NOT ADDRESS the UNDERLYING CAUSE of your condition.
Testimonial As someone who lives with chronic nausea, poor digestion and anxiety, I assumed I was out of options when countless doctors told me that there was nothing else they could do for me. hey told me it was likely all in my head. hen I visited Dr. Forzley and he told me from the initial consultation that he was very conident he could help me. I was so excited that I cried. No other doctor has ever been so much on my side. Now, 8 weeks into treatment, I am nausea free, anxiety free and my digestion is normal. I have started living a life I never thought I could live. My body is a machine, slowed and dirtied by processed foods and environmental toxins. But with the help of Dr. Forzley, my body is on the way back to an optimal state for long term health and happiness. Veronica M.
Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity is a digestive condition that involves gluten sensitivity like Celiac Disease but is not an autoimmune disorder. It involves digestive symptoms (pain, bloating…), fatigue, joint pains as well as neurologic symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, poor memory, brain fog and diiculty concentrating. Celiac Disease, Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis are autoimmune diseases. An autoimmune disorder is when your immune system attacks your body instead of protecting it. here is NO CURE for autoimmune disorders. But you can calm down the immune response NATURALLY and decrease the efects of the tissue destruction. If you have an autoimmune disease like Celiac, Crohn’s or Ulcerative Colitis and you do not balance and calm down the autoimmune destruction, your immune system can attack other tissues and cause multiple autoimmune disorders. It is common for people with an autoimmune disorder to have multiple autoimmune diseases for this reason. Medications are not always the long term answer.
Holistic therapy can manage digestive conditions by: 1) inding and balancing the underlying cause and… 2) using natural therapies that work with your body.

Wow, someone actually counted the plastic cups over the tollway. Seriously? Somebody has too much time on their hands.

that anything would be good. No, anything would not be good if it included apartments and multifamily housing. La Grange and La Grange school districts are full. They don’t need Section 8 housing, which is inevitable once the economy tanks, which is going to happen at some point in the future. So please just go retail or Y, I hope they rebuild, perhaps their own facility on the space but no apartments.
A silent prayer Most people know that there are many ways to grieve. Everyone is allowed to do that in his or her own way. Personally, cups that spell out loving memories of a beautiful life cut short seems perfect to me. Every time I see them, I say a silent prayer. I hope those young people continue their tribute for many years to come. No one has a right to criticize that which they obviously can’t understand.
Attractive clothes Hello senior ladies, where do you shop for your attractive clothes? It is a challenge to find clothes suitable for my age, 70s. Stores seem to cater to those under 60. Also to those ladies who wear a size 16, where do you find that size? I have a family member who’s having problems finding stores with that size.

Let property owners vote Now that Governor Quinn has said he will sign into law the bill authorizing DuPage County to charge a stormwater fee, it is interesting to recall that the Illinois General Assembly passed this bill for Peoria County and DuPage County. The bill provides an opportunity for Peoria County voters to vote on whether or not to permit their county to charge property owners the fee. But the bill does not give DuPage property owners the same power. Of course our County Board could let us vote on this. What are the odds of that happening?
Old farmhouses Something needs to be done about the three dilapidated farm houses at the south entrance to Lisle’s Main Street. These dilapidated farmhouses have been there for at least 15 years, and nothing’s been to done to improve them. It leaves a terrible impression residents and visitors entering the new, upgraded, wonderful Lisle downtown Main Street district.

Rep. Peter Roskam: No rules violated on trip to Taiwan you expect a high level of scrutiny, so it’s not a surprise,” Roskam told Shaw Media after Monday’s Peter opening. “I’ve Roskam been pleased to completely cooperate [with the Ethics Committee]. We’ve released all the information in order to get everything out there, so there’s no surprises. We followed all the rules, all the regulations, and I’m sure anybody that looks at it completely will come to the same conclusion.” In October 2011, Roskam and his wife visited Taiwan on an officially connected fact-finding trip to learn about Taiwanese culture as well as economic and security ties between the U.S. and Taiwan. Roskam’s daughter also was teaching in Taiwan at the time. The eight-day trip cost more than $25,000, according to the Office of Congressional Ethics. The majority of the
cost was related to travel to and within Taiwan, Roskam spokeswoman Stephanie Gengo said. The Office of Congressional Ethics alleged the Taiwan trip may have been an impermissible gift because of the involvement with the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States, which is the de facto Taiwanese Embassy. Roskam and his representatives said the Chinese Cultural University in Taipei sponsored the trip and is an appropriate private sponsor. Roskam’s camp also said the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office was a necessary and expected liaison for the trip, and the involvement was disclosed to the Ethics Committee before the trip. The Ethics Committee will announce its course of action by Sept. 11, at which point Roskam believes he will be cleared of any wrongdoing. “That’s my hope and my expectation,” he said.

By JIM DALLKE jdallke@shawmedia.com While in McHenry County on Monday to celebrate the opening of an affordable senior housing community, U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam, R-Ill., said he fully expects to be cleared of any wrongdoing regarding a trip he took to Taiwan in 2011. The House Ethics Committee is investigating a claim made by the Office of Congressional Ethics, an independent watchdog agency, that Roskam’s trip was improperly funded by the Taiwanese government. Citing the fact that the Ethics Committee approved the trip before he and his wife left for Taiwan, and the fact that the Office of Congressional Ethics hasn’t unearthed any new information that wasn’t initially vetted by the Ethics Committee, Roskam said he anticipates the investigation will prove no rules were violated. “Politics is an arena where

Charm and character highlight Public Landing Public Landing is a restaurant rich in character. Its charming setting and classic upscale fare surely are enough to attract those with an appetite, but the history ingrained in the Lockport eatery’s limestone walls truly sets it apart. It inhabits the first level of the historic Gaylord Building, a limestone warehouse constructed in 1838, that played a vital role in one of the great enterprises of the 19th century: the digging of the 96-mile-long Illinois & Michigan Canal. Nestled between the canal, a railway and a park, the building provides a local history lesson to Public Landing diners. Murals on the walls of the building’s entrance explain its significance to mid-1800s trade, while engraved stones just outside the restaurant’s patio offer a glimpse into how the waterway was born. President Abraham Lincoln played a big role. My companion and I spent a recent summer night at Public Landing. Dinner came first, followed by a relaxing walk through Lincoln Landing Park, a terrace along the canal just south of the Gaylord Building. Inside, diners are treated to a lovely window view of the restaurant patio, park and terrace overlooking the canal. Of course, you get the sense you’re dining in history: Wooden beams line the restaurant ceiling, and the limestone bricks show through to the interior. After we were seated, a veteran server greeted us kindly before bringing out warm pretzel bread with our appetizer, the House Made Chips. The app, tossed with Romano cheese and sea salt and flanked by a ranch dipping sauce, was both tasty and a bargain. For our entrees, I went with the Char Broiled Pork Tenderloin, while my companion opted for the Blackened Mahi Mahi, served over a roasted red pepper coulis and complemented with zucchini and yellow squash. The pork tenderloin was

‘It’s about our team’ Josh Williams sets aside personal goals for Elmhurst football success By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com
Josh Williams’ 2012 stats • 11 games played • 50 carries • 192 yards rushing • 3 touchdowns jays look to defend their conference title, he has been working out on his own and with his teammates, and has been doing agility drills to keep his footwork sharp. Williams could have his number called even more this season than last because his brother has graduated along with 2012 starting quarterback Joe Furco. The other big change comes on the sidelines as Joe Adam moves from coordinator to head coach to replace Tim Lester, but to Williams, the Bluejays’ continued success lands squarely on the players’ shoulders. “As far as I see it, it’s more about the players than the coaching change,” he said. Defending the title won’t be easy against fellow 2012 D-III playoff qualifier North Central College and Wheaton College, which shared the CCIW title with Elmhurst last fall, but Williams and his teammates wouldn’t have it any other way. They relish the hard work it takes to be successful on the field. “We have an opportunity each and every day, in each practice and drill, to show our blue collar mentality,” Williams said. “We’ve got to do
DGR
ELMHURST – There’s a first time for everything. Josh Williams enjoyed a memorable first last fall, when the Downers Grove South graduate and Elmhurst College football player played on the same team and shared the backfield with older brother Scottie Williams for the first time. “It was amazing,” Josh Williams said. “It was something we always wanted to do since we never had the opportunity to do it in high school.” Williams started his college career at perennial Division III powerhouse Wisconsin-Whitewater, but the academics of Elmhurst and his familiarity with the football program were the perfect match when he decided to transfer. “I got to see and experience [Elmhurst College] going to my brother’s games for three years,” Williams said. “Being around the program, I understand what it’s all about and what it takes to be successful.” Williams’ first season with the team couldn’t have gone much better. The Bluejays won a share of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin title for the first time since 1980 and won their first playoff game. “Winning the CCIW championship was amazing,” Williams said. “It required a lot of hard work and we did it.” As Williams and the Blue-

The power conference CCIW football emerges as a premier D-III league By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com North Central College’s football team has won or tied for a conference title the past seven seasons. But head coach John Thorne knows maintaining that kind of success in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin will only get harder. “I think the conference has gotten more and more competitive,” said Thorne, who is heading into his 12th season at NCC. “The coaches in place are having good success recruiting people and everybody is competitive. Nobody wants the next program to get ahead of them.” That’s easier said than done. During Thorne’s tenure, six of the eight schools in the CCIW have won or taken a share of the conference title. North Central and Wheaton College have won outright titles while Augustana, Elmhurst, Illinois Wesleyan and Carthage have tied for titles. Wheaton College head coach Mike Swider has spent nearly 30 years coaching in the CCIW and has seen the overall competition get better in the NCAA Division III conference. “The conference has always been strong, but from top to bottom it has gotten stronger,” Swider said. “From top to bottom, the conference is as good as there is in the country. If you are picking the four or five top conferences, no doubt the CCIW is in there.” To gauge just how high the level of play is, Swider points to a specific area. As a conference, CCIW teams are 16-1 in the first round of the playoffs since 2001.

“That tells you a lot,” he said. “Our conference always wins the first playoff game and that gives you credibility.” In terms of recruiting, CCIW schools compete with other Division II and III schools, NAIA institutions and players that receive walk-on offers from Division I schools. The competition for players can be fierce, but Division III schools are looking for a different type of student-athlete than the Division I scholarship athlete. “I think one of the things that I set off to do once I took the program over was to have excellence not only on the football field, but not to sacrifice the academic model,” said first-year Elmhurst College coach Joe Adam. “We’re not going to compromise academics for guys that can play the game well.” The schools in the CCIW are private institutions, which adds another speed bump on the recruiting trail. NAIA schools can offer scholarships, and the smaller state schools in Wisconsin, such as perennial D-III contender Wisconsin-Whitewater, are public institutions with lower tuition rates. For local players who are serious about school and are interested in playing compet-

and only so many guys can go Division I,” North Central senior Shane Dierking said. “Plus the CCIW has outstanding coaching staffs and out-
standing institutions where you can get a great education as well as be a part of great athletic programs. Why not sign the papers?”

ELMHURST – Last season Elmhurst College football made the playoffs for the first time in school history. The Bluejays won a share of the CCIW title for the first time since 1980 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs. After the season coach Tim Lester moved on to Syracuse to be the quarterbacks coach and Joe Adam, who was the defensive coordinator, replaced him. Among the challenges facing Adam in his first season is replacing running back Scottie Williams, who won the Gagliardi Award for best player in Division III last season.
SUBURBAN LIFE: What did it mean to you to take over as head coach? JOE ADAM: Dream come true. It really has been. It’s been such a blessing and it’s been fun putting it together for me and the coaching staff trying to raise the bar for what we did last year. SL: How do you follow up such a successful year like last year? JA: I think you start by understanding that that’s how the culture is here now and will continue to be. When we set up to put this thing together it was with this very point in mind that we would have a

team that would be able to contend on a consistent basis, not just a one-hit wonder. It took a bit longer than we would like, but we are to the point where we expect to win. SL: How has the transition from assistant to head coach been? JA: I think for me it was an easy transition because I’ve been the recruiting coordinator for almost five seasons now. I was very in tune to what we were looking for, the characteristics and traits we were looking for. We scour the country for not just anybody, but the right people that fit what we’re going to do here. SL: How do you recruit for a Division III program? JA: One of the things that I put a big onus on is work ethic here. I expect and I demand work ethic from the players. It’s going to be work ethic that gets you into successful situations, whether it be here in college or in life. We measure that in a lot of different ways. We measure that in academics, in face-to-face communications
and in interactions with our support staff. SL: What makes the CCIW such a competitive conference? JA: It’s Illinois football and it’s the partnership that our league has with our area high school coaches who understand the level of football here and understand the type of players we’re trying to recruit collectively. Plus, the location in the big part of the midwest here where we’re close to major metropolitan areas and a few hour drive from major cities. I think that’s an attraction to kids. SL: Is there anything you’ve tried to change since you took over? JA: The thing that identifies this program is called blue collar mentality. It’s on every piece of paper we hand out. BCM is on every article we issue from a team standpoint. It’s what our identifying mark is this year. It’s teaching kids what the blue collar mentality stands for. SL: How has the program changed since you joined in 2007? JA: It was a very much different culture. This is a complete 180. It’s enjoyable. It’s fun to challenge people and the kids have responded. I give a lot of credit to our kids here. They work like no other group in any level of football I’ve coached.

DOWNERS GROVE – At least they didn’t go down without a fight. Playing in the championship game of the Orland Park Tournament during the July 4 weekend, the Downers Grove Rebels 18U softball team took second place after a 6-5 defeat to the Flossmoor Hurricanes. The Rebels trailed 6-2 entering the top of the seventh inning, but scored three runs in the top of the frame to put a scare into the Hurricanes. In the semifinals, the Rebels enjoyed the other side of a close game as they topped the Frankfort Fusion 3-2.

Red Stars top Reign to remain in playoff hunt Midfielder Shannon Boxx to lead lupus fundraising walk Saturday SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA LISLE – The playoff dream is still alive. After a rocky start to the season, the Chicago Red Stars stayed in the hunt for a National Women’s Soccer League playoff berth with a 3-1 win over Seattle Reign FC Saturday at the Lisle-Benedictine University Sports Complex. Facing U.S. Women’s National Team players and Reign standouts Hope Solo and Megan Rapinoe, Chicago (7-7-5) got on the board first when Sonja Fuss scored on a penalty kick in the 11th minute of the game. The Reign pulled even on a penalty kick in the 27th minute, but the Red Stars added two more goals against Solo. Solo attempted to clear the ball late in the first half, but it hit Inka Grings in the chest and she settled it before firing the ball into the back of the net in the 41st minute. Grings virtually sealed the win when she scored off a Jen Hoy feed in the 71st minute. The Red Stars play on the road against the Washington
