Joe LoPresti of Performance Bicycle gets bikes prepared Saturday for the annual community bike ride at the Ruggard gazebo in Villa Park.

VILLA PARK – On Saturday, 6-year-old Hayden Meeker of Villa Park took his longest bike ride ever. With his parents, Kevin and Andrea, Hayden rode along the Illinois Prairie Path, the Great Western Trail, Salt Creek Trail and Villa Park neighborhoods to complete a 10-mile bike ride during the village’s annual Community Bike Ride. The Community Bike Ride just celebrated its fifth year and the Meekers, who moved to Villa Park about two years ago, participated for the first time this year. “We’re an active family,” said Kevin Meeker. “I look for opportunities for my family to be involved in the community. I want to instill that in my son, and to support the community and just to do fun things.” Each year, the event is organized by the village’s Environmental Concerns Commission. It was started with the goal of familiarizing residents with the many trails that run through the village and encouraging people to be active. “It’s really just to introduce the residents and guests to the three different trails that go through Villa Park,” said Village President Deborah Bullwinkel. “We’re really unique and really lucky that we have all three ... “ Five years ago, Bullwinkel was one of the organizers who helped start the Community Bike Ride, and she’s still active on the planning
side of things now. “I think it went really well,” she said. “We had a lot of new faces. A lot more families came out to participate. It was really, really fabulous.” The ride offered participants the option to do a 2.4mile ride, a 10-mile ride or a 1.4-mile kid-friendly ride. The longest bike ride Hayden Meeker had ever done before was about 8 miles, Kevin Meeker said, but he wanted to go for the longest route offered. “We went through areas of town that I’m not familiar with, that I had never gone around or through,” Kevin Meeker said. He said the ride is definitely something he and his family would do again. At the event, they met three different couples who, similar to his family, had recently moved into the village and wanted to get involved. The Kamm family was another group who opted for the 10-mile ride. Lesli Kamm grew up in Villa Park and after college, she moved back to the area to raise her own family. She has ridden with her three children and husband every year since the bike ride was organized, and was very active in helping plan the first ride five years ago. “I like getting a look around town rather than driving it,” she said. “It’s interesting for the kids to see. We bike on our own, but we don’t bike this route.” Kamm’s children are 13, 11 and 7-years old, and last year was the first time her whole family was able to

Abbie Bruce of Villa Park does her school shopping with the help of volunteer Valerie Janson of Darien at the Target in Villa Park.
VILLA PARK – On Wednesday, Miley Ortiz and her younger brother Alexis Ortiz visited the Target store in Villa Park with their mother, Maria Martinez, to get stocked up with school supplies for the coming year. The children joined 10 others from around the community to participate in the Salvation Army Oakbrook Terrace Corps’s Target School Spree, a special program where each child receives a Target gift card and

is assisted with shopping by a Salvation Army volunteer. The school supply program is available for local families who have had challenges over the past year and need a little extra support, said Jackie Mead, social services coordinator for the Salvation Army Oakbrook Terrace Corps. The children at the Villa Park Target event were between 5 and 16 years old. Miley and Alexis did their shopping with Marylou Bonesteel of Villa Park who said she’s volunteered with the organization for most of her life. Miley did her shopping first. The 9-year old will be in fourth grade at Westview Elementary School in Wood Dale, where she lives with her mom and brother. “We want to get the best bargain so we can have extra money to spend on other things,” said Bonesteel as the pair browsed for pencils, folders, glue sticks and spiral
notebooks. As they shopped, Bonesteel asked Miley to compare prices on similar items and helped her decide which was the best value. Most of the things in their shopping cart were standard back-to-school supplies, but Miley also got to pick out a new backpack with Monster High characters and a pair of shoes with pink laces for gym class. Although she doesn’t yet know who her new teacher will be, Miley said she’s looking forward to getting back to school where her favorite subject is writing. And, she’s excited to see all of her friends. “I’m wondering if it’s the same people in my class,” she said. Alexis goes to a different school than his sister. He celebrated his eighth birthday

Last February, he was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome and was moved to a different school with the proper services to help him. Since being diagnosed and enrolled at the new school, Martinez said she’s seen her son thrive. Like his sister, he’s looking forward to going back to school in the fall, where he
enjoys art, music and homework. In September, Miley, Alexis and Martinez will celebrate their anniversary of being involved in the Salvation Army Corps, something that Martinez said has been a blessing for her family. She said the organization has been a place where her family found new friends and a strong support network. In the past year, Bonesteel has become a grandma figure for her children. “It’s like a big family,” she said.

DERMATOLOGY UPDATE Presented by
Todd T. Davis, M.D. Board Certified Dermatologist
THE COMMON PROBLEM OF DRY, ITCHY SKIN Older adults are more likely to develop “xerosis” (very dry skin) that leads to “pruritus” (itchy skin), one of the most common skin complaints among seniors. Without treatment, dry skin can lead to a vicious cycle of itching and scratching that can cause “lichenification” (hardened, thickened patches of leathery skin). Preventing dry skin largely consists of adding moisture and sealing it in while avoiding products that strip the skin of its natural oils. To this end, limit showers and baths to 5-10 minutes, and use warm water (not hot). After gently drying the skin, apply emollient (moisturizer) within three minutes to seal moisture in. Moisturizers containing lactic acid, hyaluronic acid, dimethicone, glycerine, lanolin, mineral oil, and petroleum jelly are best.

Pace Suburban Bus Service may expand its presence in DuPage County, after county officials met with area mayors and city managers. The DuPage County Mayors and City Managers Conference, at which the meeting took place, was “not so much a proposal as an invitation to strategize,” said Tam Kutzmark, the transportation and planning director for the conference. “The county, the conference, service board and other agency partners were all there, and we’re very much at the beginning of the conversation,” she said. This most recent push is part of the DuPage Area Transit Plan, which focuses on the big picture and was created to increase the use of alternative transportation options, such as buses. Kutzmark said that, despite pushback from municipalities, which prevented a major expansion eight years ago, she believes area governments are ready for transportation reform. “Pace’s bus program has evolved,” she said. “And certainly, some of the conditions and parameters that cities might look at have changed as well.” Recent bus stop additions in Addison and Carol Stream are signs of an interest in Pace expansion, Kutzmark said. There is increased funding available for such
projects, she said, as well as a model for paying for shelters through advertisers and new laws in municipalities that were against more bus stops due to sign zoning restrictions. “One of the things that was brought up originally was that our code didn’t allow for ads in the right of way,” said Carol Stream Assistant to the Village Manager Chris Oakley. “But we started allowing the construction of digital signs. Banks, for example, show the time and the day and weather on some of their signs. As technology changed, we followed suit.” Oakley said he believed that, while Carol Stream residents will benefit from the Pace expansion, there isn’t a significant need for more routes. “I think that what people would really like would be some real time information, so they’re not wasting time at bus stops,” he said. That information could come from scrolling feeds with bus arrival times at the new stops or from mobile phone applications. Oakley also said that another big village concern, maintenance, was covered in some of the possible agreements with Pace or other private companies whose services the village may use. “A lot of people had images of what they’ve seen in Chicago,” he said. “They had seen some shelters that weren’t well-maintained or were dirty, and I think Pace has given some pretty

When his wife was near the end of her life, Richard Pagendarm spent nearly all his time caring for the woman he still calls his “other half.” For more than two years, he helped feed and clean his wife, Joan. “Taking care of her was easy,” he said. “The hardest thing I had to deal with was the isolation.” Pagendarm said that he hired an agency to come and visit, but he would only get a few hours a week – and was paying for each of them. Then, he said, he found the In-Home Senior Respite program at the DuPage County branch of Metropolitan Family Services. “It provided another chance to get out of doors,” he said. “I could go out and see people or run errands. Every
Richard Pagendarm Volunteer little bit helped.” The In-Home Senior Respite program is an association of volunteers that spends three hours each week caring for the elderly who are living with relatives or friends and cannot care for themselves. Program Director Jody Kanikula said that the vast majority of those her volunteers work with have dementia, in addition to other diseases. But the program’s service is more about the caregivers for these people rather than the infirmed.

knowing some rules and how to handle certain aspects and challenges associated with it is important, especially to the families,” she said. “They are opening their home to someone to work with the people they care about and want to know that they are able to handle the responsibility. Typically, due to the time frame required, volunteers are usually older adults who are retired. Many are former caregivers themselves. Pagendarm said that a little more than half a year after his wife passed, he was volunteering for the program that had helped ease his burden. Kanikula said that when volunteers fill out an application, they must answer questions about what they’re looking for from the experience, as well as their interests, hobbies and personality. This is done to best place them with a potential senior.
The volunteer experience can range from watching movies with the clients, to reading, to venturing outside and bonding over a shared interest. All services are free and are without any income-level assessment. “Ten thousand people a day in this country are turning 65,” she said. “Most of these people have worked all their lives. But many haven’t saved enough for a catastrophic disease like dementia, but have too much to qualify for income-based assistance.” Pagendarm will start volunteering with his fourth senior at the beginning of August. “There’s a sad side to it – most people you’re helping are towards the end of their lives,” he said. “It’s sad when someone passes, but you’ve done something to help. It’s worthwhile.”

“The caregivers are there all the time. We just give them a break,” she said. “We help make it easier to keep loved ones at home for the end of their lives. Everyone wants to die at home surrounded by the people they love.” The senior respite program is the only free service of its kind in DuPage County, according to Kanikula. It has been ongoing since 2001 and has provided an estimated half million dollars in volunteer services. The program serves 60 families in the county and has a waiting list of 20 families. Volunteers must go through an interview process, commit to at least six months of work and receive training on how to handle various issues related to aging. Addressing dementia is a central tenant of the training, Kanikula said. “So many people we work with have dementia that

First Illinois case of swine flu contracted at DuPage County Fair By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com A Boone County child who had contact with pigs at the DuPage County Fair has contracted the first confirmed case of swine flu in Illinois this year, according to a news release from the Illinois Department of Public Health. The child exhibited mild symptoms after helping an exhibitor at the county fair in late July, according to the news release. Illinois is the third state to confirm a reported case of swine flu this year. Indiana and Ohio have also confirmed an instate presence of the illness. Fair Manager Ellen Sietmann said event organizers were informed about the case Aug. 1 and have confirmed the medical status of the child. Fair officials have not yet determined which exhibit held the infected swine, she said. Sietmann said she believed that the fair did all it could help to warn against and prevent the spread of diseases during the event. Organizers provided
28 handwashing stations and 22 hand sanitizer stations, multilingual signs about handwashing and public announcements about health safety. “The Health Department and Department of Agriculture actually complimented us on all of the precautions we took,” she said. The DuPage County Health Department declined to comment and said the Illinois Department of Agriculture is responding to inquiries related to the incident. The H3N2v influenza virus is a variant of influenza A. Four human cases were confirmed last year in Illinois. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported more than a dozen cases in the U.S. this year, according to the health department release, all of which affected people who had contact with swine. The virus is rarely passed from person to person. So far, the release said, the severity of swine flu illnesses in people has been similar to that of typical seasonal flu infections.

Former spa transformed into coffee shop By SARAH SMALL ssmall@shawmedia.com VILLA PARK – Although it doesn’t look like it today, Villa Park’s newest coffee shop, C U Latte Cafe, used to be a spa. Dekovia Livingston, the woman now brewing coffees, teas and specialty drinks behind the counter, was its operator. Livingston had operated Spa Mystyk for about two
years in the storefront at 9 E. Park Blvd. before she decided the close the doors on the business. But, rather than walking away from the space, she considered the feedback Villa Park residents and Prairie Path walkers had given her – they wanted a coffee shop – and she decided to deliver. “I decided to close and convert it into what everyone was asking for,” she said.

A silent prayer Most people know that there are many ways to grieve. Everyone is allowed to do that in his or her own way. Personally, cups that spell out loving memories of a beautiful life cut short seems perfect to me. Every time I see them, I say a silent prayer. I hope those young people continue their tribute for many years to come. No one has a right to criticize that which they obviously can’t understand.
Attractive clothes Hello senior ladies, where do
you shop for your attractive clothes? It is a challenge to find clothes suitable for my age, 70s. Stores seem to cater to those under 60. Also to those ladies who wear a size 16, where do you find that size? I have a family member who’s having problems finding stores with that size.
No apartments Regarding the thumbs up about the YMCA taking proposals from developers for the space that’s empty and vacant at Ogden Avenue and La Grange Road: Your stance is that anything would be good. No, anything would not be good if it included apartments and multi-family housing. La Grange and La Grange school districts are full. They don’t need Section 8 housing, which is inevitable once the economy tanks, which is going to happen at some point in the future. So please just go retail or Y, I hope they rebuild, perhaps their own facility on the space but no apartments.

Reflecting on children and domestic violence
Write to us
Right now, there are three children residing in DuPage County who must live with the effects of domestic violence-turned-homicide for the rest of their lives. On July 19, a Downers Grove man killed his wife and then turned the knife he used on himself. An 11-year-old daughter was left to deal with the trauma. Only a week later, an Addison man bludgeoned his wife to death and attempted to kill one of his two stepsons who tried to intervene. No one can predict the devastating effect the murders will have on these young lives. At Family Shelter Service, we see the effects of domestic violence on children every day. Growing up in a violent home is a traumatic experience that can affect a child’s life, growth and development. To address the unique needs of these children, Family Shelter developed an extensive program for kids who have repeatedly witnessed domestic violence. Our individual, family and group counseling services help children deal with the effects of trauma. It is our experience that in at least half of homes where domestic violence occurs, children are present. Children typically make up 50 to 60 percent of our shelter residents. No one can predict what the outcome will be for the children

in Downers Grove and Addison. Tragedies like this are an unfortunate reminder that domestic violence exists in every town, no matter the socioeconomic status or demographic. As a community, we are all responsible for being vigilant. Family Shelter offers a hotline for victims at 630-469-5650, as well as for concerned family and friends. Everyone deserves the opportunity to live in safety. Each one of us can play a role in making that a reality. Sincerely,

Although she’s originally from Chicago and now lives in Schaumburg, Livingston decided to start her spa business in Villa Park after discovering the close-knit community and the affordable rent. “Villa Park is like a little country town,” she said. “I think a coffee shop is good because everyone needs a place to socialize.”
She’s planning on holding a grand opening later this month that will feature free samples and special giveaways for all guests. Livingston said her main goal is to make C U Latte a place where Villa Park residents and visitors from other towns come to catch up with friends and relax. “It’s just a place where you can come and feel welcome, where you can feel comfortable,” she said.

LOMBARD – For more than a year, Lombard residents and visitors have watched the scenery along St. Charles Road, along Grace Street and along the Union Pacific Railroad change as three new bridges were erected over the major streets and railroad tracks. The new bridges allow people to use the Great Western Trail safely without crossing the streets and tracks. The village celebrated the official opening of the bridges during a ribbon cutting ceremony Tuesday evening on the St. Charles Road bridge. The bridges informally opened to the public in mid-July. “The bridges have been open to the public and are being used quite extensively,” said Carl Goldsmith, director of the Public Works Department. Ground broke on the project in March 2012, although the initial idea to develop the network of bridges came in October 2001, after the Board of Trustees formed a Trail Ad Hoc committee, said Goldsmith. The Great Western Trail bridge project was almost 12 years in the making as village staff worked to design the structures and find a way to fund them, he said. In all, the project cost about $5.5 million, and the village contributed $1 million, which came from funds

from one of the village’s tax increment financing districts. The rest of the project was paid for using federal funds, Goldsmith said. Dozens of local residents attended the ribbon cutting ceremony, many of them on bikes, to celebrate the new bridges. Several local and regional elected officials were also at the event. Village President Keith Giagnorio said the completed bridges represented years of cooperation between the village, other levels of government and community members. The three bridges, he said, have drastically changed the appearance of the village and will be used by people for many years. Local bikers, joggers, walkers and trail supporters in Lombard and neighboring towns are also enthusiastic about the new bridges, said Don Kirchenberg, voluntary chairman for the Friends of the Great Western Trail, an advocacy group promoting the trail. “They’re ecstatic about it,” he said. “They’ll be able to use the trails more often. They’ll be able to get to Lombard more often.”
Sheriff’s department remembers cadaver dog ing dogs for nearly two decades, says a lot of handlers are men and prefer male dogs out of pure macho mentality. “They’ll work just as hard or be just as lazy as the other gender,” Bertuca said. The dog-training deputy said he hopes Kato is ready for police work by her first birthday, but he’s willing to give her all the training she needs. Bertuca said his job is about protecting people, and patrol dogs like Stitch – and one day Kato – serve those people, too. WHEATON – DuPage County Sheriff’s Office Deputy John Bertuca said he has recently remembered a lot of cases he worked with his late partner of nine years: A German shepherd named Stitch. “It’s pretty amazing the stuff that he could do,” said Bertuca. Stitch, who died Aug. 2, was DuPage County’s only cadaver detecting canine. He was so good at his job, he twice found human remains in bodies of water, one of the most difficult scenarios for a patrol dog Bertuca still remembers his first call with Stitch. In December 2007, Bertuca and Stitch got a call from the Chicago Police Department to help search for a body. Bertuca said he remembers walking up to the South Side apartment under which police thought a body might be buried. After Bertuca asked that holes be drilled in the concrete floor, he instructed everyone to leave. Stitch followed him from hole to hole at first, then picked one, sat and stared as he’d been taught. “The hairs stood up on the back of my neck, and I got chills,” Bertuca said. He led Stitch around the basement and again the canine went back to the same hole. So Bertuca told the police Stitch had found a body. While jackhammers were brought in, the partners left, and Bertuca began to feel a little nervous. “This is the first time my dog’s doing this, and we’re going to tear of up the floor in some guy’s apartment,” Bertuca said. Sure enough, after tearing up the entire floor of the underground basement, under concrete and six more feet of dirt, clay and rocks, police found Eric Kaminski’s fully clothed skeleton, almost four years after the Oak Lawn res-
ident went missing. He and Stitch went on to search many more scenes from DuPage County to Dixon, some of which Bertuca still isn’t allowed to talk about. The pair cleared scenes after Drew Peterson’s arrest. Bertuca said showing up to a call with every whiteshirt boss just waiting for an answer never felt easy, but he trusted Stitch’s skills. He knew if there was a body, Stitch would find it, and if there wasn’t, the canine wouldn’t waste anyone’s time or energy with a false alert. Stitch lived to work. Shortly before he died, a vet discovered several bulging discs in his spine and a tendon issue in one of his rear legs despite Stitch’s lack of visible pain. “He still wanted to go to work,” Bertuca said. Stitch, named by Bertuca’s kids after the Disney character, grew up in Bertuca’s home since he was just a 10-week-old puppy imported from Germany and donated to the sheriff’s department by a local breeder. Unlike many other agencies that purchase dogs between 1.5 or 2-years-old, DuPage County raises their working dogs from puppies. Patrol dogs are routinely taught to detect narcotics by a process of imprinting scents. It’s taught as a game to the dogs, and once they learn how to detect once scent, others are easier to imprint. The one exception: Human remains. Many dogs shy away from cadaver detection. With the loss of Stitch, Bertuca hopes to train what he expects to be his last canine partner before he retires. Five-month-old Kato, named after Bertuca’s very first working dog, is a female German shorthaired pointer hired as Stitch’s replacement. Bertuca, who’s been train-

ELMHURST – Six years ago, Elmhurst resident Joan Knippen walked her very first Komen Race for the Cure in Chicago dreaming she would one day run it. “I had more to give,” Knippen said. This year, she is Race Chair for Lombard’s third race. The 5K has become much more than a one-time outing as she’d expected. Knippen first heard about the race on the radio the day after she’d talked to Dawn Kruse, a neighbor and friend, about her fight with breast cancer. Although the two have lived on the same block in Elmhurst for more than 20 years, they weren’t very good friends until about eight years ago. Their children didn’t share the same interests, so they didn’t often cross paths, but once Kruse’s kids left for college, the two grew closer. “Dawn is really a very private person,” said Knippen. “She rarely talks about [her cancer].” When Knippen heard about the Komen race she thought it sounded like a fun girls outing for some of the neighbors to support Kruse as a breast cancer survivor. She called up her neighbor, Phupinder Gill, and asked his company to sponsor their team, which Knippen said he did happily. In September 2008, the team dubbed “Gill’s Girls” piled into a van to Chicago where they walked what would be their first of many races together. “When we were crossing the finish line on that first race, I wondered what it would be like to run across the finish line,” Knippen said. Growing up she’d learned every excuse to get out of gym class, but Knippen remembers seeing more than just a flood of pink that first race. She said she saw hope and promise. She felt inspired. So, the next spring, she put on some gym shoes and started running.
If you go What: Komen Race for the Cure Lombard When: Sept. 22 at 8:30 a.m. Where: Yorktown Shopping Center, Lombard Information: komen.org Anger and frustration quickly replaced her feeling of hope. Knippen hung up the gym shoes, but five weeks before her second race, the running itch returned. “It was miserable,” said Knippen. “It was hot. I hated every minute of it.” As difficult as it was, she didn’t give up this time. Side by side with one of her teammates, Maggie Gill, Knippen ran past the finish line of her second Komen race just like she’d been imagining. The novice runner was thrilled to accomplish her goal, but it just left her more determined to keep pushing herself. “Running, by no means, can be compared to cancer and fighting for your life,” Knippen said. Kruse is one of her closest personal connections to breast cancer, but Knippen said the stories she hears from survivors every year continue to inspire her. After years of growing involvement behind the scenes of the race, Knippen is this year’s Lombard Race Chair. While she can no longer participate in the race because she’s busy running the event, Gill’s Girls always walk the course. “I’m very sad I’m not walking out there with them,” Knippen said, her voice breaking like she might cry. The group of neighbors, friends and teammates have developed a system. The team texts Knippen when they get close to the end of the course, and she meets them to cross the finish line together, just like their first race six years ago. It’s a tradition they have no intention of breaking. “We are going to keep going as long as we can,” Knippen said.

• LETTERS Continued from page 14 House ethics investigation of U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam (R-Ill.). I have always found that the Wheaton congressman, whom I covered in the Wheaton Journal when he first ran for state office and later, for Press Publications’ weekly “Word on the Street” political column, is one of the most ethical elected officials I have ever met in my 31-year journalism career, and he deserves to be cleared of any alleged wrongdoing. Mr. Roskam, a devoted family man and public servant, has served his constituents well over the years and deserves just treatment. Let’s hope this

ty money is used to fund appointed agencies, according to a news release from the DuPage County Board. All of the potentially dissolved agencies would first be subject to a six month
public review process and audit and could be saved by a backdoor referendum, the release said. “I believe this has changed the conversation in Springfield,” Conroy said.

Gov. Pat Quinn visited DuPage County Aug. 2 to sign what he called a “landmark bill” that significantly increases the DuPage County Board’s power to cut certain public programs. Senate Bill 494, sponsored by State Sen. Tom Cullerton, D-Villa Park, and State Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Elmhurst, gives DuPage County the authority to dissolve outdated or defunct county appointed agencies via ordinance. County Board Chairman Dan Cronin said that this bill presented “an opportunity to carefully examine these units of local government and come up with a plan for consolidation.” Quinn said that the bill meant more oversight in a time when many taxpayers live paycheck to paycheck. “We need to have effective government, a government that gets the job done for everyday people. We don’t need to have excessive bureaucracy,” the governor said. The bill could have an impact on county appointed governmental agencies

CLARENDON HILLS – Technically, it was a church event. But there was no preaching, no organ music and no reading from the Bible. Instead, children flocked joyously to pet alpacas, live music played and food was in abundance, as folks supported a noble cause. The Church of the Holy Nativity in Clarendon Hills was hosting its annual festival – Family Farm Fest – which is in its seventh year supporting Heifer International, an organization that aims to end world hunger. “I think by partnering with Heifer International, it invites people in the community to come and participate in the church’s mission to change the world through an organization that’s already very familiar,” said the Rev. Aimée Delevett, who is the rector at Church of the Holy Nativity. The church’s goal this year was to raise $25,000, enough for five arcs, which carry two of every animal that Heifer distributes to a family. One of the stipulations with Heifer is that the first offspring of the animals are given to another family in need, so several families can benefit. The animals include goats, horses and even bees and worms. The benefits of each animal are numerous, such as goats that can give milk to be made into butter, cheese or yogurt to sell, or sheep to produce wool to sell or for clothing. “I guess that’s why I’m involved, because they teach self sustainability instead of just giving them the food,” said Mary Lu Connally, who helps organize the event. Connally said it takes about 70 volunteers to put on

the fest, which include members of both the church and the wider community. A ball of energy, Connally led the cake walk, greeted everyone in attendance and showed her love of what Heifer does. She also reflected on the passing of her dear friend, Nancy Handke, who was a long time parishioner at the church and passed away recently at 82. On display was a plaque and banner commemorating Handke. “This Family Farm Fest is dedicated to her because she is the one that brought Heifer International to the church,” she said. Delevett said one of the reasons the fest is so popular is its relatively cheapness. While playing the 25 games, making crafts and winning prizes, Delevett said kids can have fun and at the same time learn how their spare change is actually “changing this world.” One of those children who was enjoying the fest for the first time was two-year-old Noah Natarelli of Clarendon Hills, who was petting the sheep. “He’s having a fantastic time and is so excited about all the animals here,” said his mom, Corri. “The sheep yells and that’s why Noah likes him, so he’s very excited about that.” Connally said the fest raised more than $20,000 for Heifer and its organizers will decide in the next few weeks where they want Heifer to give the proceeds. The funds raised will be added to the already impressive total of $117,000 that the church has collected for Heifer in its first six years. “What this church cares about more than anything, more than its own subsistence, is being a transformative presence in the world,” Delevett said.

LOMBARD – Many of the residents who normally spend their days patronizing the shops along St. Charles Road, Park Avenue and Main Street will travel to the south end of the village this Saturday to support the Lombard Town Centre at its wine and craft beer tasting fundraiser. The annual event is one of the major fundraisers for the Lombard Town Centre, which works to promote the village’s historic downtown district, and will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday in the ballroom of the Westin Hotel and Conference Center, 70 Yorktown Center. As of Wednesday, about 150 people had already bought tickets, and Colleen Whittington, promotions chair for the Lombard Town Centre, said about 200 people are expected
to turn out for the event. Throughout the evening, more than 70 types of wine, craft beer and scotch will be offered for guests to taste; hors d’oeuvre, artisan cheeses and antipasta will also be available. Lombard’s The Vino Cellar and Famous Wines of Forest Park have coordinated to bring wine, craft beer and scotch vendors to the event. Even for someone who doesn’t know much about wine, Whittington said, this is a good event. “They really focused on bringing in wine vendors who are personable and can talk about their wines,” she said. Tickets are available for $74 a person, or $140 per couple. For more information about the event, or to order tickets, contact Whittington at 630-913-7862, or go to lombardtowncentre.org/Wine_Craft_ Beer_Tasting.html.

Restaurant reviews
Charm and character highlight Public Landing Public Landing is a restaurant rich in character. Its charming setting and classic upscale fare surely are enough to attract those with an appetite, but the history ingrained in the Lockport eatery’s limestone walls truly sets it apart. It inhabits the first level of the historic Gaylord Building, a limestone warehouse constructed in 1838, that played a vital role in one of the great enterprises of the 19th century: the digging of the 96-mile-long Illinois & Michigan Canal. Nestled between the canal, a railway and a park, the building provides a local history lesson to Public Landing diners. Murals on the walls of the building’s entrance explain its significance to mid1800s trade, while engraved stones just outside the restaurant’s patio offer a glimpse into how the waterway was born. President Abraham Lincoln played a big role. My companion and I spent a recent summer night at Public Landing. Dinner came first, followed by a relaxing walk through Lincoln Landing Park, a terrace along the canal just south of the Gaylord Building. Inside, diners are treated to a lovely window view of the restaurant patio, park and terrace overlooking the canal. Of course, you get the sense you’re dining in history: Wooden beams line the restaurant ceiling, and the limestone bricks show through to the interior. After we were seated, a veteran server greeted us kindly before bringing out warm pretzel bread with our appetizer, the House Made Chips. The app, tossed with Romano cheese and sea salt and flanked by a ranch dipping sauce, was both tasty and a bargain. For our entrees, I went with the Char Broiled Pork Tenderloin, while my companion opted for the Blackened Mahi Mahi, served over a roasted red pepper coulis and complemented with zucchini and yellow squash. The pork tenderloin was

Three generous strips proved to be plenty of meat for the dish, accompanied by mashed potatoes and tasty sugar snap peas. Over on the seafood portion of the menu are a sauteed tilapia, grilled salmon, and lobster tail.
Aged steaks and fresh homemade pasta recipes round out the menu, as do tempting desserts and an array of wine and craft beer. Perhaps most unique to the menu, though, are the “Yappetizers.” Adding to the character of Public Landing is a series of plates for your pooch, avail-

By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com NAPERVILLE – It took a few years, but Jason Callahan is happy with his current football situation. The 2008 Glenbard East graduate first landed as a walkon at Western Illinois University. Despite dressing for all of the games, he never saw the field. After spending 2½ years on the scout team, Callahan didn’t think he was getting a fair shot and decided it was time for a change. He contacted his former teammate at WIU, Jordan Tassio, who had transferred to North Central College.
“A big reason why I went to North Central was because my buddy Jordan Tassio went to WestJason ern Illinois with Callahan me,” Callahan said. “He ended up transferring before me. I think he played (at North Central) for a year or two and then I got in touch with him.” Tassio, who played his final season with the Cardinals last fall, started at running back for three years. On Tassio’s recommendation, Callahan got in touch with head coach John Thorne at North Central

and enrolled. Last season, Callahan saw action exclusively on special teams, but was on the field for all special teams plays and made 12 tackles and forced a fumble. He impressed coaches with his tackling ability and the Cardinals’ staff decided to move him from wide receiver to outside linebacker this offseason.
“This will be my first year since high school playing outside linebacker,” Callahan said. “I just feel way more comfortable making the tackle than being the guy getting tackled. I’m just looking forward to helping the defense out.” With an eye on starting at linebacker, Callahan is hoping to help the Cardinals win another College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin title. North Central has won at least a share of seven straight CCIW titles. “They’re always No. 1 in the CCIW and they have a good shot at being in the running for national championship,” Cal-
lahan said. “At North Central we’re always competing for something.” After competing in football, wrestling and baseball at Glenbard East, Callahan said he misses those other sports, but his body wouldn’t be able to handle the wear and tear of multiple college sports. The exercise science major plans to graduate in the winter and hopes to train athletes, either as a coach or in physical therapy. “I think high school is a great time to experiment, but college is a time to do what you enjoy the most,” Callahan said. “Football is what I love the most. It’s my favorite sport.”

The power conference CCIW football emerges as a premier D-III league By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com North Central College’s football team has won or tied for a conference title the past seven seasons. But head coach John Thorne knows maintaining that kind of success in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin will only get harder. “I think the conference has gotten more and more competitive,” said Thorne, who is heading into his 12th season at NCC. “The coaches in place are having good success recruiting people and everybody is competitive. Nobody wants the next program to get ahead of them.” That’s easier said than done. During Thorne’s tenure, six of the eight schools in the CCIW have won or taken a share of the conference title. North Central and Wheaton College have won outright titles while Augustana, Elmhurst, Illinois Wesleyan and Carthage have tied for titles. Wheaton College head coach Mike Swider has spent nearly 30 years coaching in the CCIW and has seen the overall competition get better in the NCAA Division III conference. “The conference has always been strong, but from top to bottom it has gotten stronger,” Swider said. “From top to bottom, the conference is as good as there is in the country. If you are picking the four or five top conferences, no doubt the CCIW is in there.” To gauge just how high the level of play is, Swider points to a specific area. As a conference, CCIW teams are 16-1 in the first round of the playoffs since 2001.

“That tells you a lot,” he said. “Our conference always wins the first playoff game and that gives you credibility.” In terms of recruiting, CCIW schools compete with other Division II and III schools, NAIA institutions and players that receive walk-on offers from Division I schools. The competition for players can be fierce, but Division III schools are looking for a different type of student-athlete than the Division I scholarship athlete. “I think one of the things that I set off to do once I took the program over was to have excellence not only on the football field, but not to sacrifice the academic model,” said first-year Elmhurst College coach Joe Adam. “We’re not going to compromise academics for guys that can play the game well.” The schools in the CCIW are private institutions, which adds another speed bump on the recruiting trail. NAIA schools can offer scholarships, and the smaller state schools in Wisconsin, such as perennial D-III contender Wisconsin-Whitewater, are public institutions with lower tuition rates. For local players who are serious about school and are interested in playing compet-

and only so many guys can go Division I,” North Central senior Shane Dierking said. “Plus the CCIW has outstanding coaching staffs and out-
standing institutions where you can get a great education as well as be a part of great athletic programs. Why not sign the papers?”
New head coach Adam cherishes opportunity ELMHURST – Last season Elmhurst College football made the playoffs for the first time in school history. The Bluejays won a share of the CCIW title for the first time since 1980 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs. After the season, coach Tim Lester moved on to Syracuse to be the quarterbacks coach ,and Joe Adam, who was the defensive coordinator, replaced him. Among the challenges facing Adam in his first season is replacing running back Scottie Williams, who won the Gagliardi Award for best player in Division III last season.

Augustana’s Erik Westerberg earned plenty of accolades after last season and prior to this season. He’s hoping the individual achievements match the Vikings’ accomplishments in 2013.

players we’re trying to recruit collectively. Plus, the location in the big part of the Midwest here where we’re close to major metropolitan areas and a few hours drive from major cities. I think that’s an attraction to kids. SL: Is there anything you’ve tried to change since you took over? JA: The thing that identifies this program is called blue collar mentality. It’s on every piece of paper we hand out. BCM is on every article we issue from a team standpoint. It’s what our identifying mark is this year. It’s teaching kids what the blue collar mentality stands for. SL: How has the program changed since you joined in 2007? JA: It was a very much different culture. This is a complete 180. It’s enjoyable. It’s fun to challenge people and the kids have responded. I give a lot of credit to our kids here. They work like no other group in any level of football I’ve coached.

More local CCIW talent
SUBURBAN LIFE: What did it mean to you to take over as head coach? JOE ADAM: Dream come true. It really has been. It’s been such a blessing and it’s been fun putting it together for me and the coaching staff trying to raise the bar for what we did last year. SL: How do you follow up such a successful year like last year? JA: I think you start by understanding that that’s how the culture is here now and will continue to be. When we set up to put this thing together it was with this very point in mind that we would have a
team that would be able to contend on a consistent basis, not just a one-hit wonder. It took a bit longer than we would like, but we are to the point where we expect to win. SL: How has the transition from assistant to head coach been? JA: I think for me it was an easy transition because I’ve been the recruiting coordinator for almost five seasons now. I was very in tune to what we were looking for, the characteristics and traits we were looking for. We scour the country for not just anybody, but the right people that fit what we’re going to do here. SL: How do you recruit for a Division III program? JA: One of the things that I put a big onus on is work ethic here. I expect and I demand work ethic from the players. It’s going to be work ethic that gets you into successful situations, whether it be here in college or in life. We measure that in a lot of different ways. We measure that in academics, in face-to-face communications and in interactions with our support staff. SL: What makes the CCIW such a competitive conference? JA: It’s Illinois football and it’s the partnership that our league has with our area high school coaches who understand the level of football here and understand the type of
