DOWNERS GROVE – Downers Grove 12-yearold Noah Glenzinski punched and kicked his way to gold and bronze medals at the 2013 USA National Karate Championships last month in Greenville, S.C. It was the third trip to the national competition for Glenzinski, and his first first-place finish. The gold medal came in kata, which is the solo, choreographed recital of karate moves. “Kata is almost like an imaginary fight,” Glenzinski said. “Whoever has the better form and power and stance and speed wins.” Glenzinski placed third in the sparring category, called kumite in Japanese. He said his favorite combo is a reverse punch with a hook kick. “It looks like you’re about to roundhouse kick somebody,” he said. “And then you bring your leg around to the other side and kick them in the head.” Competitors wear pads on their fists, shins and the tops of their feet to cushion the blows, but he said head gear is optional and most people don’t wear it. In kumite, he said they also purposefully don’t punch or kick their opponents in the face or head at full strength. Still, a fight is a fight, and getting punched or kicked in the midsection at full force can hurt, he said. “Sometimes it can hurt pretty bad, and you’re just almost like out of air,” he said. “And you just kick them back.” In kumite, the two competitors earn points by landing blows. Punches are worth one point, unless the recipient has been taken to the ground before the punch, then it’s worth three points. A kick to the head is worth three points and a kick to the body is worth two points. 8NEWS BRIEFS Fire destroys vacant house DOWNERS GROVE – The Downers Grove Fire Department was dispatched at 4:23 a.m. Friday for a residential fire at 610 Rogers St. in Downers Grove. Upon the fire department’s arrival, crews encountered smoke and flames coming from the roof and a window of a small, one-story home. The home was unoccupied and under construction during the fire, according to a release. Firefighters made entry into the home in an effort to contain and extinguish the fire, and it was struck at 4:40 a.m. There
were no injuries to firefighters or civilians. The Downers Grove Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the following departments: Lisle-Woodridge, Oak Brook, Hinsdale and the Downers Grove Police and Public Works Departments. Estimated damages at this time are reported to be about $250,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Tipsters may be eligible for a monetary reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of a vandalism perpetrator or conspirator in cases in which the vandalism of park district property is in excess of $2,500. The Boyd family decided this spring to close the business almost a year after owner B.J. Boyd died from cancer at the age of 60 in September. DOWNERS GROVE – Although the Gilbert brothers looked forward to retirement, they quickly realized resting on their laurels was not for them. On May 5, Mike, Rick and Dan Gilbert bought the recently franchised Sears Appliance and Hardware Store in Downers Grove. After renovation and overhaul, they will celebrate the location’s ceremonial grand opening Friday and Saturday at the store. Last year, all three brothers had retired from their respective professions. The oldest, Mike Gilbert, 59, was the last to set sail into proverbial sunset after selling Integrated Filing Solutions – a manufacturing company he had built from the ground up. Similarly, Rick Gilbert, 53, had just sold his office supply company and Dan Gilbert, 56, retired in 2010 as lieutenant after a 32-year career in the Downers Grove Fire Depart-
ment. But they agreed that something was missing. “We kind of all just got bored. Retirement wasn’t for us,” Dan Gilbert said. “We finished the work around the house, cleaned the garage, did some yard work, then thought, ‘What now?’” Opportunity reared its head in the form of a local Sears Appliance and Hardware Store. In October 2012, the multinational mid-range department, appliance and hardware store chain announced the franchising of 1,237 locations, according to Sears’ third quarter SEC filings. The next spring, the Gilbert brothers learned the Downers Grove Sears Appliance and Hardware Store at 925 Ogden Ave. would be part of the new franchise model. Growing up at 4400 Elm St., just a few minutes from the Downers Grove store, the Gilberts had visited the hardware store thousands of times and the three describe themselves as “advanced hobbyists and

Both Prospect and Eccles Fields are located behind Clarendon Hills Middle School, and can be accessed off of Chicago Avenue in Clarendon Hills Ideally players will be able to attend two days of try-outs; if players can only attend one day, the best determination will be made from that effort only. The Cardinals are a professionally trained youth baseball organization committed to the quality development of local players from 9 years old into high school. To provide the highest level of training and objectivity, all teams use professional trainers to provide training and skill development and ensure that players are appropriately positioned in games according to their demonstrated skills. Try-Outs will be conducted under the supervision of former major league player, and current Cardinal trainer, JJ Furmaniak. The teams play a competitive basebal schedule with local travel teams in the WSBL and tournament play consistent with our development focus. Cardinals are also a feeder team for Rhino Elite Baseball, an Elite level travel program that progresses players into the high school level and is dedicated in assisting players in achieving their goal of playing college baseball by playing at a regional and national level of “showcased” competition. If players show the appropriate level of capability within the Cardinals, or at try-outs, they will be evaluated and selectively provided invitations to join the Rhinos, if they are capable and that level of competition is desired. Between 25 and 30 pieces of jewelry were reported missing from a Downers Grove apartment in the 700 block of Warren Avenue. A man told police the last time he had seen the jewelry was July 27. At 10:30 a.m. Aug. 1, he returned home and noticed a previously locked deadbolt was unlocked. The jewelry allegedly was taken from a bedroom jewelry box. Nothing else was reported missing. There are no suspects. Among the jewelry reported missing were a pair of $1,600 gold earrings, an $8,000 gold ring, a $2,500 white gold ring with diamonds, a $5,000 charm bracelet with angels and a $3,000 gold rope bracelet.
Battery charges • Timothy D. Dutton, 39, 1032 Oxford St., Downers Grove, was charged with two counts of domestic battery at 1:30 a.m. Saturday in the 800 block of Burlington Avenue. • Russell W. Trantina, 35, 1740 Warren Ave., Downers Grove, was charged with battery and disorderly conduct at 6:26 p.m. Aug. 5 after an incident at a business in the 1500 block of Ogden Avenue. Trantina allegedly threw a ball of paper at an employee after cursing at the employee. He also allegedly failed in an attempt to throw a stapler at the employee.

that will look to improve intersection controls, address parking and access needs and minimize the potential for accidents, according to the village. DOWNERS GROVE – If you view Lois Vitt Sale’s home from the vantage of Google Earth’s satellite, you’ll first notice the number of trees on her property, and if you look closer, a green roof. A variety of grasses, succulent plants and other perennials fight for space on the roof of her attached garage, their roots absorbing water before it heads to the downspout. Rain that does make it through the planting material, roots and moisture mat finds its way to one of the four rain barrels situated on opposite corners of her home. “During a rain storm, you won’t hear anything from that downspout,” she said. “You stand near any other rain barrel you’ll hear a [rushing water sound]. You don’t hear anything in this downspout, and then all of a sudden the sponge fills, and you start to hear a trickle. It continues to release the water at a much slower rate, and a lot less water.” Vitt Sale, an architect, LEED Fellow and Downers Grove resident, started adding stormwater improvements, including the only residential green roof in Downers Grove, to her property years ago. Collectively, the improvements reduce the amount of rain water runoff from her property that would eventually make it through the village’s expensive and overworked stormwater infrastructure. “Green home improvements such as rain gardens and green roofs help reduce local flooding and make our stormwater cleaner,” Downers Grove Stormwater Administrator Karen Daulton said. “The small steps homeowners make on their property adds up to a healthier environment for humans and wildlife.” In addition to the roof and four 65-gallon rain barrels, Vitt
Credits and incentives A credit is an ongoing reduction in the stormwater fees assessed in recognition of facilities or actions taken to reduce the impact of stormwater runoff from a property. An incentive is a one-time reduction in the stormwater utility fee, applied to a customer’s account balance.
Sale’s newest stormwater improvement is a rain garden in the back of the home, designed by Art and Linda’s Wildflowers, a landscaping company based in Cicero. Roof water runs through the downspouts to underground pipes that feed the base of the garden. “Increasing the amount of garden area is better for storm water than just grass,” she said. “In the storm-water codes, grass is usually treated about like concrete, because it’s usually shallow-rooted and compact, and most water … goes right off of it.” Vitt Sale added the improvements to her home before Downers Grove created its stormwater utility fee this year, so it was a nice bonus when she got to apply for incentives from the village for her improvements. This spring, she filled out the incentives application. It took about an hour, and when she heard back from the village, she was surprised to learn the incentive was $575 – large enough to cover her stormwater utility bill for five years, she said. “I’ve spent more than $500 on all of this, but I would have done it anyway,” she said. “But when somebody tells me I don’t have to pay a bill for five years, I say right on.” And, the green roof has benefits in addition to stormwater absorption. It keeps the garage cooler than a black roof. “And it’s beautiful,” she said.
How to be green • Rain barrels can be purchased at most hardware stores in a variety of styles. • Rain barrels should be drained at least every 10 days to prevent mosquito gestation. • With research, a rain garden is doable for a homeowner on their own, Vitt Sale said. • Residents should hire a structural engineer and landscape architect, at minimum, if they are interested in a green roof, she said. Building a green roof involves structural concerns and layers of ice and rain shield, a moisture mat, egg-carton like crates to hold the growing medium and other supplies.

ter plants in the Chicago area, in particular, stop at this stage and then they have it trucked out to farms, which is a pretty long haul.” Most of the biosolid fertilizer produced by the Downers Grove Sanitary District goes to local recipients in the Downers Grove, Woodridge and Westmont area, he said. But if a large landscape contractor further out, say in Minooka, is willing to take a large amount, they’ll drive it there. After the belt press, the mudlike substance is piled across several fields by sanitary district employees. The piles of Class B material are rotated
from stack to stack over three years as it slowly dries. “Once it’s gone through the freeze-thaw cycle for two or three winters, it’s very stable,” he said. Now there are only two steps left. Employees use large auger tractors to spread the stuff 4-inches-thick across an asphalt pad about half the size of a football field. This is the last step of the drying process before employees feed what is now biosolid fertilizer through a trommel screen. It removes any rocks or other debris and pulverizes the large chunks of fertilizer into something that visually resembles dirt. At this point, the fertilizer is kept under cover to stay dry
as it awaits order requests from the community. “After we’re done with it, it’s a Class A material, the highest standard the EPA has for biosolids,” Menninga said. One of the sanitary district’s biggest biosolids customers is the Glen Ellyn Park District. “We think it works really well,” said Glen Ellyn Park District horticulturalist Alice Murray. “We use it a lot for reseeding and sodding.” She said the park district has used about 30 truckloads worth of the byproduct each of the last two years. Park district employees rake it onto athletic fields, especially, to help grow the turf.

DOWNERS GROVE – The last time most residents see or think about waste leaving the bathroom is when they flush the toilet. But after the toilet’s “whoosh,” the waste is just beginning a three-year process at the Downers Grove Sanitary District that ends in a safe byproduct available for free to residents as a fertilizer. The district produces about 4,000 cubic yards of the byproduct, called biosolid fertilizer, each year. And it manages to give away every ounce of the nutrient-rich material to residents, contractors and governmental bodies to fertilize landscaping projects. None of it ends up in landfills. “It has a lot of micronutrients that you don’t typically get in your standard fertilizer that are really important for things like root growth and plant health,” Downers Grove Sanitary District General Manager Nick Menninga said. “So it gives you stuff other than common fertilizer does. It makes it a slightly different product than if you got a bag of stuff at the store.” Producing biosolid fertilizer is a fairly unique ability for a sanitary district, Menninga said. Downers Grove has the large amount of space required for the process, unlike
some more constricted suburbs. In Downers Grove, raw sewage enters the plant and first goes through a grit removal system, before heading through a series of concrete channels during what’s called the primary clarification stage. The primary clarifiers separate water from the sludge, which is basically dissolved toilet paper and everything else flushed or washed down the drain. At that point, the water goes on its own journey through a separate set of cleaning processes before eventual discharge into the DuPage River. The sludge removed by the clarifiers is diverted to anaerobic tanks, where bacteria that thrives in low-oxygen environments feed on it, removing pathogens and other nasties. Afterthat,thesludge,whichat this point resembles crude oil, is sent through a press that squeezes moisture out of the product, and adds a coagulant. When it exits the press, the material is thicker and looks like heavy, wet mud, known affectionately as “freshly de-watered sludge.” “This stuff that just comes off the belt press, this would be a Class B product,” Menninga said during an interview and tour of the expansive plant. “This would be suitable for putting on a corn or soybean field. But this is not a material you would give away for public distribution. A lot of waste wa-

Case of swine flu contracted Attorney charged with felony theft, wire fraud at DuPage County Fair SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA
By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com A Boone County child who had contact with pigs at the DuPage County Fair has contracted the first confirmed case of swine flu in Illinois this year, according to a news release from the Illinois Department of Public Health. The child exhibited mild symptoms after helping an exhibitor at the county fair in late July, according to the release. Illinois is the third state to confirm a reported case of swine flu this year. Indiana and Ohio also have confirmed an in-state presence of the illness. Fair Manager Ellen Sietmann said event organizers were informed about
the case Aug. 1 and have confirmed the medical status of the child. Fair officials have not determined which exhibit held the infected swine, she said. Sietmann said she believed the fair did all it could to warn against and prevent the spread of diseases during the event. Organizers provided 28 handwashing stations and 22 hand sanitizer stations, multilingual signs about handwashing and public announcements about health safety. “The Health Department and Department of Agriculture actually complimented us on all of the precautions we took,” she said. The DuPage County Health Department de-
clined to comment and said the Illinois Department of Agriculture is responding to inquiries related to the incident. The H3N2v influenza virus is a variant of influenza A. Four human cases were confirmed last year in Illinois. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported more than a dozen cases in the U.S. this year, according to the health department release, all of which affected people who had contact with swine. The virus rarely is passed from person to person. So far, the release said, the severity of swine flu illnesses in people has been similar to that of typical seasonal flu infections.

D-99 on track with strategic goals District 99 recently presented our annual “state of the district” report to the board of education. We shared the great strides we’ve made in achieving our strategic COMMUNITY goals. For example, during VOICE the 2012-13 school year, we Mark accomplished the following: • Students enrolled in McDonald more rigorous courses. The percentage of students in advanced level courses grew from 33.7 to 36.9 percent. • Students achieved nearly double the expected growth in reading test scores, proving our systematic approach to literacy is working. • We modified our curriculum to align to the new Common Core State Standards. We also worked closely with our elementary and middle schools to ensure continuity. • We developed new courses that support important Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) initiatives. • We created new ways to support the social and emotional needs of students. As a result, we contacted students individually 17,753 times – up 76 percent from the previous school year – and grades improved. • The community used our facilities more. Rentals grew by 23 percent, adding $180,000 in revenue. • Twelve teachers started pursuing the National Board Certification designation – the gold standard of a highly competent teacher. 8LETTERS Reader fires back on immigration issue To the Editor: In response to a Letter to the Editor by Victoria Bentley dated July 31, 2013: Ahhh, intolerance once again rears its ugly head regarding immigrants. “Is the American electorate as ignorant as all of our elected leaders believe?” is the question proposed. No, not all. In fact, voters are getting smarter and better informed…Well, at least those watching anything other than Fox “News.” One point where you are correct is that the current immigration laws have not been enforced. You can thank corporations for that. “Why give up cheap labor?” What’s funny (if it weren’t so sad) is your claim that all these immigrants turned into Democrat voters and toppled the GOP voting plan. That’s a real knee-slapper. The GOP is losing by losing voters – women, men, blacks, whites, Latinos… because of their actions (or inaction) and their less than desirable (Victorian era) intrusive views. In answer to your question, the electorate is getting smarter. But nice back-door way on your part of implying
that immigrants are ignorant freeloaders. Just as there has been immigration reform over the centuries, there have been immigrants serving in the Armed Forces to serve and protect the United States. Perhaps you should direct your myopic view toward the immigrants who volunteered in the Armed Forces to protect your right to freely spew derision in their direction. You might consider thanking them for their service to make it possible for you to disparage them from the safety of your cushy armchair. And just as there has always been immigration through the centuries, there will always, unfortunately, be prejudice. Your choice – you can look at these immigrants as a gift or as a burden. Cronin lauds Sandack for SB494 Dear Editor: Recently, Governor Pat Quinn signed landmark legislation that will enable DuPage County to consolidate smaller, inefficient layers of local
government. Although narrow in scope, Senate Bill 494 was fiercely opposed by entrenched special interests that benefit from the current bureaucratic system. Fortunately for the citizens of DuPage County, Representative Ron Sandack enthusiastically signed-on as Chief Co-Sponsor and worked tirelessly to ensure the bill’s passage. Previously, as mayor of Downers Grove, Ron Sandack was the only mayor to express support for the last major initiative I sponsored in Springfield – the reform of the DuPage Water Commission and the repeal of the commission’s quarter cent sales tax (in 2016) that will save DuPage County taxpayers tens of millions of dollars annually. During his brief tenure in Springfield, Representative Sandack has focused on making government more accountable and transparent to voters and has set an example as a public servant by declining state health insurance and legislator pension benefits. For the 37th year, hundreds of vendors and more than 20 food stalls will set up shop at the DuPage County Fairgrounds for an all-night flea market, according to a Zurko Promotions news release. The All-Nite Flea Market returns Saturday from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m. the next day. The open air event will feature vendors from as far away as Texas, according to Jim Decker of Zurko Promotions. It has been named one of the top 10 flea markets in the country by the History Channel and National Geographic, according to the release, and typically draws between 6,000 and 8,000 people. In recognition of the time and resources he and his wife, Sandy, have given to the hospital over the years, the Naperville couple will be recognized as the “Good Samaritans of the Year” at the hospital’s upcoming fundraising event. The couple donated $50,000 for the purchase of pediatric surgical equipment for use in the 14 technologically advanced surgical suites. Vince Lovelle also is a member of the hospital’s Governing Council after having served as chairman of the hospital’s Development Council, a group of community leaders and physicians who volunteer to guide fundraising activities on behalf of Good Samaritan Hospital. Hospital President Dave Fox is thankful for the Lovelles’ generosity. “Vince and Sandy’s contribution has touched so many lives. We are extreme-
ly grateful for their strong involvement in the community and willingness to give back,” Fox said. “Good Samaritan Hospital is pleased to recognize the Lovelles as the ‘Good Samaritans of the Year’ for their outstanding commitment to health and the community.” With the help of philanthropy, and people like the Lovelles, Good Samaritan Hospital has been able to expand and better accommodate its patients with the latest technology, according to a news release. “Heathcare is improving at a rapid pace,” Vince Lovelle said. “Sandy and I wanted to help Good Samaritan remain state-of-the-art. We are glad we were able to make a large gift to the hospital, but know how important every charitable contribution is – big or small.” The Lovelles will be recognized at Hollywood Nights, the hospital’s 2013 gala Oct. 26 at the Bolingbrook Golf Club. Pace Suburban Bus Service may expand its presence in DuPage County, after county officials recently met with area mayors and city managers. The DuPage County Mayors and City Managers Conference, at which the meeting took place, was “not so much a proposal as an invitation to strategize,” said Tam Kutzmark, the transportation and planning director for the conference. “The county, the conference, service board and other agency partners were all there, and we’re very much at the beginning of the conversation,” she said. This most recent push is part of the DuPage Area Transit Plan, which focuses on the big picture and was created to increase the use of alternative transportation options, such as buses. Kutzmark said that, despite pushback from municipalities, which prevented a major expansion eight years ago, she believes area governments are ready for transportation reform. “Pace’s bus program has evolved,” she said. “And certainly, some of the conditions and parameters that cities might look at have changed as well.” Recent bus stop additions in Addison and Carol Stream are signs of an interest in Pace expansion, Kutzmark said. There is increased funding available for such projects, she said, as well as a model for paying for shelters through advertisers and new laws in municipalities that were against more bus stops due to sign zoning restrictions. “One of the things that was

brought up originally was that our code didn’t allow for ads in the right of way,” said Carol Stream Assistant to the Village Manager Chris Oakley. “But we started allowing the construction of digital signs. Banks, for example, show the time and the day and weather on some of their signs. As technology changed, we followed suit.” Oakley said he believed that, while Carol Stream residents will benefit from the Pace expansion, there isn’t a significant need for more routes. “I think that what people would really like would be some real time information, so they’re not wasting time at bus stops,” he said. That information could come from scrolling feeds with bus arrival times at the new stops or from mobile phone applications. Oakley also said that another big village concern, maintenance, was covered in some of the possible agreements with Pace or other private companies whose services the village may use. “A lot of people had images of what they’ve seen in Chicago,” he said. “They had seen some shelters that weren’t well-maintained or were dirty, and I think Pace has given some pretty good assurance that they’ll be clean and maintained throughout the year.” Kutzmark said that next, the conference will turn to Pace for more analysis about bus shelter locations. “I would imagine as we hear from Pace about how they want to strategically locate stops and how to ID the best place to put stops,” she said, “That will lead where this conversation might go or strategies we might pursue.”

On the recent bicycle race in Elmhurst: Possibly I missed something, and was not aware, but it seemed like the timeframe for that during the day on a weekday could be better planned. I think I made about three different attempts to try to get to the library and streets were shut down. I know it was the first time they ever did this, but my opinion and suggestion, would be maybe to try it on a Sunday or Saturday morning early in the morning before businesses and things are open.

WOODRIDGE – Linas Olsauskas had a dream as a teenager. As 48-year-old, he’s finally chasing it down. The Woodridge man’s idea to help skateboarders master tricks and beginners balance with ease was born as a 13-year-old. Sk8Hook is a rubber-dipped attachment that mounts on the deck of a skateboard and gives skateboarders a lift by putting pressure on the outsides of each foot. “I came up with the idea 35 years ago and never did anything with it,” said Olsauskas, a self-employed real estate appraiser. “I sat on the idea for all those years because I never knew where to take it.” About a year ago, Olsauskas read an article in the Woodridge Reporter about efforts from area residents to patent their ideas, he said. That pushed him to create his Sk8Hook contraption, which he described as “training wheels” for skateboards. “I researched as much as I could and I just dove head first,” he said. “At this point and time, the product is patent pending, which protects you within the bounds of the U.S.”
He said it can take about two years before the patent office sends a response. The process has cost him almost $3,000 thus far, he said. “It’s an expensive process especially if you don’t make any money off it yet,” he said. “I try to make attempts at dedicating a little time each week.” He hopes to one day sell the idea to a skateboard company that will mass produce the Sk8Hook. For now, he’s selling it online for $24.95. As of Monday, he had only sold two of them, but he added that the product still is in its early stages. “It’s only been out for a few days ... It’s going to be slow moving in the beginning,” Olsauskas said. “It’s the American dream to have a business that will set you up for life.” He hopes his product’s rarity carries it to success – he said no one else produces anything like the Sk8Hook. “This is just something that was missing [from the skateboard industry],” Olsauskas said. “It’s an elevation that can change the sport in some way, if you had a little bit of control over the board, you’d see better landings and less injuries, as well.”

He said it was a complex process because there was scrap metal in Nathansen’s body from the bombing, and he encountered challenges in the other leg from a past hip replacement. “She has since gone back to Israel and so far she’s doing great,” he said. Providing aid to people
like Nathansen was one of the reasons Domb wanted to be a doctor in the first place. He said his original desire was to “fix” people. If someone was severely ailing, he wanted the ability give them back a fruitful life. “When you can make the difference in a person’s life between able-bodied or disabled, I think you make a tremendous impact on the rest of their life,” he said.

EATING CHEESE MAY HELP PROTECT TEETH AGAINST CAVITIES Consuming dairy products is vital to maintaining good overall health, and it’s especially important to bone health. But there has been little research about how dairy products affect oral health in particular. However, according to a new study consuming cheese may help protect teeth against cavities. The study sampled 68 subjects ranging in age from 12 to 15, and the authors looked at the dental plaque pH in the subjects’ mouths before and after they consumed cheese, milk, or sugar-free yogurt. A pH level lower than 5.5 puts a person at risk for tooth erosion, which is a process that wears away the enamel (or protective outside layer) of teeth. The higher the pH level is above 5.5, the lower the chance of developing cavities. The subjects were assigned into groups randomly. Researchers instructed the first group to eat cheddar cheese, the second group to drink milk, and the third group to eat sugar-free yogurt. Each group consumed their product for three minutes and then swished with water. Researchers measured the pH level of each subject’s mouth at 10, 20, and 30 minutes after consumption. The groups who consumed milk and sugar-free yogurt experienced no changes in the pH levels in their mouths. Subjects who ate cheese, however, showed a rapid increase in pH levels at each time interval, suggesting that cheese has anti-cavity properties. The study indicated that the rising pH levels from eating cheese may have occurred due to increased saliva production (the mouth’s natural way to maintain a baseline acidity level), which could be caused by the action of chewing. Additionally, various compounds found in cheese may adhere to tooth enamel and help further protect teeth from acid.

HINSDALE – Ten years ago in Israel, a woman suffered devastating injuries as a result of a terrorist bombing while on a bus with family members. Among these injuries was a shattered left femur. Since then, Chana Nathansen has been in physical pain, but it’s nothing in compared to the emotional anguish caused by a much greater loss. “She said her biggest loss of all, of course, was that of her 3-year-old daughter,” said Hinsdale Orthopaedics surgeon Benjamin Domb, 37, of Oak Brook. “I have a
3-year-old, so this kind of bit at my heart strings, if you will.” The suicide bomber killed 23 people. Nathansen, who now is 36, also was pregnant when the bombing occurred. Domb said she was unable to walk at the time she gave birth. Nathansen needed ar throscopic surgery on her right hip, but did not have the means to afford it. She was advised by Rabbi Avraham Elimelech Firer to contact Domb for help. Domb said Firer is a famous figure throughout the world who advises people about where to go for medical problems. Domb said he was touched

LISLE – Benedictine University has received a $46,000 Food Scrap Composting Revitalization and Advancement Program (F-SCRAP) grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. The grant will allow the school to divert food scraps generated in the Lisle campus cafeteria and other buildings. “Composting all the food scraps both from consumers and in the kitchen will save methane-producing garbage from going to the landfill and produce top-quality compost for growing plants,” said Jean-Marie Kauth. associate professor at Benedictine. The new composting effort will allow Benedictine to divert in excess of 105,000 pounds of food waste a year from landfills and wastewater. The move toward composting food waste is just the latest
in a line of green efforts by the university, according to a news release. Benedictine recently began using more environmentally friendly cleaning products, which reduce water consumption and pollution while improving indoor air quality for employees and students. Also, Benedictine’s Sodexo Dining Services began using a new process to decrease the use of cooking oil and turn any used oil into biodiesel fuel through Filta, a recycling service. The university also has received grant money from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation to make upgrades to indoor lighting systems, and continues to monitor and maintain efficient lighting and temperature use throughout campus buildings under a curtailment program that greatly reduces energy consumption, the release states.

LISLE – Those of all ages are invited to the inaugural Art in the Park hosted by the Lisle Park District on Sept. 7. The event, planned from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Lisle Community Park Bandshell, 1825 Short St., will feature a sidewalk chalk art competition, local artist booths, an art-car show and a fundraising auction of wheelbarrow planters sponsored and painted by local businesses, organizations and artists with the proceeds to benefit the Lisle Partners for Parks Foundation. “Chalk-it!,” a friendly artistic sidewalk chalk competition, will be divided among age groups from kindergarten through the professional level. Weather permitting, the entries will be on display throughout the afternoon and the contest will be judged, with prizes awarded to each age group. The entry fee is $5. The artists’ booths will be open for business throughout the event and will include
works of photography, paintings, artful apparel, ceramics and pottery, drawings, jewelry, glasswork, metal and wood, all available for purchase. The art-car show is open to classic or decorated cars, hot rods, low riders, motorized scooters or lawnmowers, any unusual contraptions, and youth foot-powered vehicles such as bikes, wagons and strollers. The early bird entry fee is $10 before Thursday and $15 afterward. Finally, the auction of the community wheelbarrow planters art project, which features the talents of local businesses, organizations and artists, will be at the Community Park Bandshell. Proceeds from the auction of the 21 wheelbarrows will benefit Partners for Parks. VANDALISM TIPSTER AWARD PROGRAM In an effort to reduce and eliminate senseless damage caused by vandalism, the Downers Grove Park District and Downers Grove Police Department announce the Vandalism Tipster Award Program. Should reported information lead to the arrest and conviction of a vandalism perpetrator or conspirator, the tipster may be eligible for a monetary reward of up to $5,000 for cases in which the vandalism of Park District property is in excess of $2,500. YARD WASTE COLLECTION REMINDERS Yard waste includes leaves, grass clippings, twigs, small branches and other garden refuse. Collection continues through the second week of December. • Yard waste must be placed in one of the following: 33-gallon biodegradable paper bag 33-gallon unlined can Republic yard waste cart • A sticker must be attached to each bag, can or bundle. Bags or cans may not weigh more than 50 pounds. • Carts or cans must be clearly identified as yard waste. Please mark any yard waste containers on the outside as YARD WASTE, or contact the Village for a decal. • Brush and tree branches may not exceed 4 feet in length and 5 inches in diameter and must be bundled together with jute twine or uncoated string. Bundles may not exceed 2 feet in diameter, 4 feet in length, and 50 pounds in weight.
From May 15 to September 15 residents are permitted to use outdoor water based on an even/odd system. The last digit of an address determines the day. If an address ends in an even number, the resident can water on even calendar days; if the address ends in an odd number, the resident can water on odd calendar days. Outdoor water usage is permitted between 4 a.m. and 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. and 11 p.m. on your watering day. Outdoor water usage is not permitted between 11 a.m.and 4 p.m. on any day, for any address.

VERNON T. LANGLEY, JR. Vern Langley, age 84 of St. Germain, Wisconsin, passed away on August 3, 2013, at his home surrounded by his family. After high school, he began his college career which was put on hold when he was drafted into the Army during the Korean Conflict. After being discharged from the Army, he returned to college and completed his degree in Elementary Education. He taught sixth grade before becoming a principal in Downers Grove. Thirty years later, he retired from education and changed careers, becoming an over-the-road trucker for North American Van Lines. He and his faithful dog, Tahoe, enjoyed this career together logging over one million miles, crossing the United States many times until he retired again at age 70. In retirement, he and his wife moved to the Northwoods of Wisconsin, where he enjoyed his home on the lake, which provided many hours of fun for the visits of his family. People would say of Vern, “He is the busiest retired person I've ever met.” Vern became a model train enthusiast, and built a large layout which he and his wife spent many hours constructing. He loved to tell stories about the histories of his steam engines. A memorial service will be held at St. Luke Presbyterian Church, 3910 Highland Ave, Downers Grove, on Saturday, August 24, 2013, at 2:00pm.

We Americans, black and white, will never get along as long as they preach hate. George Zimmerman was called a white Mexican by a few blacks. George was found not guilty of the shooting of Trayvon Martin who was, I guess, at the wrong place at the wrong time. I feel sorry for both parents. George and his family are in hiding. What kind of life will they have? Dan Cronin said this bill presented “an opportunity to carefully examine these units of local government and come up with a plan for consolidation.” Quinn said the bill meant more oversight in a time when many taxpayers live paycheck to paycheck. “We need to have effective government, a government that gets the job done for everyday people. We don’t need to have excessive bureaucracy,” Quinn said. The bill could affect county appointed governmental agencies that provide public services, including up to
13 fire protection, sanitary, mosquito abatement and street lighting districts. A recent board assessment indicated that nearly $300 million of county money is used to fund appointed agencies, according to a news release from the DuPage County Board. All of the potentially dissolved agencies first would be subject to a six month public review process and audit and could be saved by a backdoor referendum, the release stated. “I believe this has changed the conversation in Springfield,” Conroy said.

You see, our elected officials live in a world of insulated privilege. They posture with their holier-than-thou tones, fight and make rules which do not affect or apply to them and badger any idea that might help or provide relief to the very citizens that elected them. As with all revolutionary ideas… the plan has controversy and potential flaws… but the essence of the plan is goodness and a “first step” toward protecting millions of Americans. Why not embrace, nurture and grow an original idea versus simply trying to tear it apart on the basis of party lines and pledge? I am not asking for welfare or to have a right that I have not earned. I’m simply asking for the same protective liberties that our elected officials live with everyday. To me, a Republican Congress who has spent the majority of its time and effort repealing a basic liberty, that will help millions of its citizens, is simply tantamount to treason.

A splendid taste of East Asia at Thipi Thai GLEN ELLYN – There’s nothing quite like the mix of sweet and savory flavors that you get from Thai food. Spiciness is a hallmark of many forms of Asian cuisine, and you’ll get that from Thai food, too. But the combination of opposing flavors sets Thai food apart. As a longtime fan of the cuisine, I had high hopes when I stopped by Thipi Thai in Glen Ellyn on a recent weeknight. And my dining companion, even more of an aficionado, was nearly chomping at the bit with hunger. Fortunately, we were not disappointed. From the enchanting decor to the delightful dishes, we were in for a terrifically memorable meal. Without hesitation, we placed our drink orders as soon as we saw the menu – we never pass up a chance to get Thai iced tea. It’s a strongly brewed iced tea with sugar and condensed milk. The milk and the sugar complement the bitterness of the tea rather than masking it, making for a sensation that engages your taste buds. For appetizers, I opted for the shumai steamed crabmeat dumplings served with soy sesame vinaigrette for dipping. It’s a common order for me, and Thipi Thai’s version was just right. My companion went for the coconut shrimp, which came with a pineapple mango sauce. “Perfectly sweet and tangy,” my dining companion said. On to the entrees. We’re both big fans of pad woonsen, which is what my companion ordered, but I thought I’d try something different and selected the orange beef. I’m only moderately tolerant of spicy food, but the menu showed just one pepper next to my choice – the scale appears to go up to three for items such as kung pao noodle chicken. One particularly spicy pepper caught me by sur-

because I left myself without any room for dessert. I probably would have chosen the “chocolate pyramid” – chocolate mousse with sauteed bananas over a rum sauce. I requested a few bites of my companion’s pad woonsen with chicken, and very much enjoyed the mix of cellophane noodles (I’ve seen them referred to as glass noodles elsewhere), chicken, egg and vegetables in a brown

garlic sauce. Thipi Thai has a high-ceilinged dining area, with an alcove toward the back that’s
up a flight of stairs. Prints of Asian scenes and delightful elephants carved from driftwood adorn the walls. We found the service to be excellent, attentive without being obtrusive. And the menu has plenty of dishes I’ve never tried before to tempt me to return.

Huskies on the hunt for victory Downers Grove native Hogan leads NIU soccer’s quest for MAC title By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – There was soccer last fall for Paul Hogan. Then there was spring soccer. Then the trend continued. Hogan has immersed himself in soccer this summer to get ready for the 2013 season at Northern Illinois University. “I’m always working out,” Hogan said of his summer routine. “I played with the U23 Downers Grove Roadrunners and I did 1-on-1 soccer sessions with little kids at Doerhoefer Park.” Hogan hopes all that play-
ing and training will pay dividends for himself and the Huskies this season. Last fall, they made it to the Mid-America Conference championship game against Akron, but came up short. Hogan is looking for a different outcome this time around. “We won the MAC championship my freshman year, which was a big deal, and we got to the NCAA tournament and won a game,” Hogan said. “My sophomore year [last year], we played at a higher level but we weren’t quite as successful. We gave Akron a fight. We hope to knock them off this time.” The Zips are perennially

one of the top teams in NCAA Division I soccer. If the Huskies are to unseat Akron as conference champs, they will have to do so with a new-look roster that features eight freshmen and just four seniors. As the young players adjust to the college game, Hogan can provide some first-hand knowledge of the transition.
“The speed of everything is different,” Hogan said. “In high school, I was kind of one of the fastest guys out there. I came here and I was one of the slowest. The pace of the game is the biggest difference.” Adjusting to the college game took time for Hogan, and it wasn’t just the speed of the game that took getting used to. It also was adjusting to his role and to the style of play the Huskies employ. “I’ve progressed a lot,” Hogan said. “When I was younger, I was just going out and playing. Now I’m more familiar with the system [the coaches] have for us. I think I’m a lot smarter and make
better decisions.” Hogan said the Huskies typically run a 4-2-3-1 formation with one striker spearheading the attack. Along with senior James Stevenson, Hogan is one of just two forwards listed on the roster. After playing in all 20 matches last season, Hogan would love nothing more than to do the same this fall, but team goals come first. “In general, our goal is to win the MAC and make it to the NCAA tournament,” Hogan said. “As far as my goals, I always work my butt off and do whatever I can to help the team win. That’s my main goal.”

As a junior, the 5-foot-10 outside hitter finished second on the team with 242 kills and was fifth with 163 digs. She also recorded double-doubles in kills and digs in the same match seven times with breakout performances against Temple (22 digs, 13 kills, four aces) and St. Louis (18 digs, 16 kills, three blocks, two aces). As the most experienced hitter on the roster, Baarstad is in position to post even better numbers this season as a senior.

Ground rules for gridiron practices in effect By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com Mark Molinari has a little something extra on his plate as he starts his first season as head coach of Downers Grove South’s football team. In addition to installing the plays on offense and the schemes on defense, he closely monitors how the Mustangs’ practice. In early May, the Illinois High School Association put forth new rules regarding the amount of time players can practice and the amount of equipment they can wear. “We have definitely had to alter our practice schedule from what we’ve done in the past,” said Molinari, a former DGS assistant coach. “Once we hit the practice field, we’re going to be moving at all times.” Molinari said the new rules will place more emphasis on film-room study and walkthroughs, which do not count toward overall practice time. His preliminary plan for his

in the afternoon. He also said planned practice schedule could go by the wayside if he and his coaches figure out a better system. The biggest issue for Molinari and most coaches is
weight room activity. Even though players are in pads on the field, sessions in the weight room count as practice time. “The biggest challenge to deal with is the weight room because it counts as practice,” Benet coach Pat New said. For the first practices of the preseason, New said he planned for his team to do weightlifting for half an hour in the morning, then meet as a team for two hours before a two-and-a-half hour practice in the afternoon. In the end, the limited practice time shouldn’t be much of a factor for the Redwings. “In this day and age, you get so much done in the summer with the 25 days you get with the kids,” New said. “It’s so different from when I played.” The new guidelines left some coaches scrambling to figure out a new practice schedule, but IHSA’s primary concern was protecting the health of its student-athletes
in what sometimes can be sweltering conditions. “The importance of the policy is for the players’ safety,” Bolingbrook High School athletic trainer Gina Younce said. “The players are decreasing their risk of suffering from any heat illness, which can be dangerous and even fatal.” Younce said the new rules won’t affect her job as a trainer since she already had followed prescribed heat illness guidelines before the IHSA implemented its own set of rules. The new practice limitations won’t affect the way Bolingbrook head coach John Ivlow runs his practices. “It doesn’t affect us at all,” Ivlow said. “We haven’t practiced beyond three hours the last 10 years whether we were in full pads or not. We never went more than two hours this summer. I think for other coaches it might mean something, but for us it doesn’t change anything.”
