VILLA PARK – Cycling fans who enjoy following major races won’t have to watch competition online or on TV this weekend. Professional and amateur cyclists from across the Midwest will congregate in town for the Villa Park Grand Prix. The event is sponsored by RDS Cycling Team and Club, a member of the United States Cycling Development Foundation that produces different bicycling races throughout the Midwest, said Robert Di Silvestro, the club’s race organizer. “It’s going to be a nice little show,” Di Silvestro said. The event is scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to about 4:30 p.m. Sunday, and should draw close to 300 racers, he said. Throughout the day, the cyclists will be divided into races depending on their age, gender and skill level. The professional racers will ride for about an hour at speeds of 30 miles per hour, Di Silvestro said. This is the second consecutive year Villa Park has hosted the grand prix, although RDS Cycling also hosted a similar event in town several years ago. “(Last year) it was really well received,” said Villa Park Deputy Police Chief Bob Budig, who is cooperating with Di Silvestro to coordinate the event. “A lot of people enjoyed it and asked if it’s coming back.” Budig said many residents brought chairs out to watch the races last year and people living on the course set up viewing tents on their

Cullerton bill for green infrastructure signed

VPA

VILLA PARK – A bill that would provide suburban communities guidelines on using environmental technology to reduce storm runoff, flooding and property damage was signed into law Tuesday by

Gov. Pat Quinn. The bill was sponsored by state Sen. Tom Cullerton, D-Villa Park. The legislation gives clarification to communities on how they can operate and maintain green roofs, rain gardens and other environmentally friendly alternatives to a traditional storm sewer system. Many local communities have already implemented their own programs and the law defines what oversight authority municipalities have over alternative, green infrastructure systems. One example is the Villa Park Police station, where the village built a planted roof in 2004 to help lower energy costs and reduce storm water runoff. “As suburban infrastructure expands, more and more communities are forced to deal with the impact of flooding caused by storm runoff,” Cullerton said in a news release. “This law outlines cities’ unique, environmental opportunities to prevent property damage. They have the green light to go green.”

The real tragedy behind vision-stealing glaucoma is that most people afflicted with this eye disease do not even realize they have it. As a result, the condition goes undiagnosed and untreated, which too often leads to unnecessary blindness. Of the 2.7 million people in the United States with glaucoma, half are undiagnosed. Most are lulled into a false sense of confidence because glaucoma often displays no symptoms in it’s early stages. By the time it begins to affect vision, any lost sight is impossible to regain. The risk of developing glaucoma begins to increase dramatically at midlife, which is why everyone should have a baseline exam by age 40. A follow-up exam schedule can then be determined by baseline results. Diagnosing glaucoma is not always very easy, and careful evaluation of the optic nerve continues to be essential to a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. Detection of glaucoma requires periodic eye exams with ancillary testing. It is especially important for people over 40 and those with huge risk factors such as a family history of glaucoma and being severely nearsighted. To schedule an appointment, please call SKOWRON EYE CARE. At Skowron Eye Care, our mission is your vision. PS: While glaucoma is most common in middle-aged individuals, the disease can strike at any age, with those having a family history of the disease being especially vulnerable.

Cassidy embraces new lifestyle after deadly fire By SARAH SMALL ssmall@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – This time last August, Jason Cassidy was lying in a hospital bed at Loyola University Medical Center’s Burn Center being treated for smoke inhalation and third-degree burns across almost half of his body. A year later, 26-year-old Cassidy lounges on his living room couch on a Tuesday after work. His body is free of bandages, but scars are visible on his legs and arms from the flames of a house fire that claimed the life of Paula Morgan on the eve of her 25th birthday last July. Cassidy is finished with doctor visits now, he doesn’t go for physical therapy anymore and he’s back to working full time at a Lombard-based landscaping company. He also bears the mark of someone who’s done quite a bit of growing up in the past year. “The whole perspective I had on life was altered,” he said. “A year later, you can’t

let anything slow you down.” Late last fall, after Cassidy was able to take care of himself again, he moved back into the house in Villa Park that he rented with friends. He soon realized, though, that he wasn’t interested in the party atmosphere that still filled the house, and in April he moved into an apartment in Lombard with his dad’s sister. It’s quieter here, he said, and he likes it that way. When he moved out of his dad’s house, where he’d recovered, Bob Cassidy encouraged his son to embrace life. “I said, ‘You have a life to live, go out and live it,’” Bob Cassidy said. “He’s really taken that to heart and that’s what he’s doing. I’m very happy with how it’s all gone and how he’s come out of this.” July 22 marked the oneyear anniversary of the fire. Cassidy said he went to work and treated it as a normal day. He considered writing something on Facebook to mark the date, but instead posted a comment on a commemorative vid-

eo that one of Morgan’s friends posted. His father also treated the day as any other, but took some time to reflect. “There was a moment in time when I did sit back,” Bob Cassidy said. “I just looked at it and thanked God that I was strong enough to help him get through it and that he was strong enough to get through it. Jason Cassidy said his life is ordinary again, and he tries to keep it that way. There are, however, the obvious hangups. There are the ongoing court proceedings for Todd Mandoline, the Villa Park man who allegedly started the house fire and was charged with first-degree murder, aggravated arson and other crimes on a ninecount indictment. Jason Cassidy attended one of Mandoline’s court dates, just so he could see the man, before letting his father take the lead on working with the prosecutors and the Bill Ackerman – backerman@shawmedia.com courts. Jason Cassidy of Lombard is working full time at a Lombard-based

On July 21, 2012, Paula Morgan of Lombard hosted a party with friends to celebrate her birthday. According to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, Todd Mandoline of Villa Park, a former boyfriend, allegedly placed paper in Morgan’s car’s gas tank before lighting it on fire and leaving the area. Morgan later died of smoke inhalation. Mandoline was arrested by the Lombard Police Department and charged with four counts of first-degree murder, three counts of aggravated arson, residential arson and criminal damage to property. His next court date is Aug. 28.

he’s taking in stride. “Money doesn’t control me,” he said. A year after the fire, Cassidy’s doing things that 26-year-olds do. He’s planning a road trip to Las Vegas with his friends, he’s planning another trip to Florida with

his girlfriend and he’s gone out on his dad’s boat several times this summer. He said he’s happier now than he was before the fire, and his dad is proud of how his son has progressed. “He seems like he’s pretty well back on his feet,” Bob

‘A lot of sadness’ Aside from the Cassidys and the Morgans, there’s another family that has spent the past year remembering the fire on Ahrens Avenue. It’s the Lombard Fire Department, and specifically the department’s Red Shift that responded to the fire. Lieutenant Michael Heimbecker has been with the department for 10 years. He was leading the crew that went into the house to rescue Cassidy and that later found Morgan. “For me, there’s a lot of

sadness,” he said. “We’re responding to something, doing everything we can, and later we find out it was set intentionally.” Firefighters see a lot of calls during the course of a year, some with good outcomes and some with bad outcomes, Heimbecker said. A year later, the fire that killed Morgan and changed Cassidy’s life is one he reflects on with sadness. “For me, a year later it was still on my mind,” he said. “I often think about Paula’s son Nicholas and how he’s doing. It’s a lot of different emotions. Happy that Jason’s doing well, and I think about Nicholas and Paula’s family.”

“My dad keeps me informed,” he said. “The next time I go to a court date for him is when he gets sentenced.” At the time of the fire, Jason Cassidy was employed full time but without health insurance to cover the expenses for nearly seven weeks in the hospital, followed by months of medications, therapies and doctor visits. Various fundraisers were held but they couldn’t come close to denting the final medical bill that topped $300,000, he said. So, Cassidy’s in the process of filing bankruptcy, something

Cassidy said. “It’s just making sure he’s not looking back over his shoulder.”

it means to be a responsible part of the community,” Conroy said. “We’re really getting away from that and we can see the effects.” Conroy said she first learned about the absence of civics education in the classroom by being involved in the schools of her four children, who range in age from 16 to 27. She said she was shocked as was a committee of state senators before whom she testified earlier this year. In the next few weeks, a task force – comprised of legislators from both parties along with education experts – will be formed to review how civics is cur-

OPINIONS n LAST WEEK’S WEB POLL QUESTION: At what price do you consider a home a “luxury home”?

York Township Senior Center is a ‘cool’ spot As the summer wanes and Labor Day approaches, please remember that the York Township Senior Center at 1502 South Meyers Road is an official cooling center for senior citizens. Seniors who need relief from the heat can stay in our air conditioned auditorium, open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., COMMUNITY Monday through Friday. If VOICE there is an event or class John going on in the auditorium, please be discreet. Either Valle join in or find a comfy chair in the hallway until the event is over. Seniors should take extra precautions during heat waves and are advised to stay in air conditioned spaces at least several hours during the daytime. On extra hot days, anyone without air conditioning should take refuge with family or friends whose homes are cooled. Other alternatives are public buildings such as libraries, park districts and shopping malls. And even if you don’t need relief from the summer weather, York Township Senior Center is a good place to be. Depending on the day and time, you may play bridge or pinochle or attend an art class or sit in with a woodcarving class. We also have activities that provide a little more exercise such as Yoga, Tai Chi, Line Dancing and Yuan Ji, a combination of Tai Chi and dance. For those of you who enjoy being pampered, a barber, beautician and occasional foot care clinics are available by appointment. We have a free movie on the big screen in our auditorium every Tuesday afternoon. Throughout the year, we schedule many one-day trips, inhouse parties and entertainment as well as many educational seminars. We also offer referral services to seniors who need legal aid or chores done around their house. Our capable Senior Center staff also can help you apply for LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program), Circuit Breaker Assistance and SHIP (Senior Health Insurance Program). We continuously are looking for new programs and services to offer to our seniors. For information or if you have any suggestions about new activities, seminars or classes you want to see us offer, call York Township Senior Center at 630-620-2424.

John Valle is the supervisor of York Township.

C U Latte owner Dekovia Livingston outside her shop Aug. 7.

A thumbs up to C U Latte Cafe owner Dekovia Livingston, who recently opened a coffee shop along the Illinois Prairie Path. When Livingston’s first business idea that the location – a spa – didn’t work out, she didn’t give up. Instead, she closed and re-opened to serve specialty drinks, coffee and tea. It takes guts to learn and try again. A thumbs up to Carol Bauer, executive coordinator for the village of Lombard and organizer of the village’s quarterly blood drives. Bauer has worked for the village for 47 years and began organizing blood drives in 1988. She has helped collect more than 10,981 units of blood. The Illinois Coalition of Community Blood Drive Centers deservingly named Bauer “Most Dedicated” blood drive coordinator in Illinois. We think that’s great.

8SOUND OFF

MARLYN AND BERNARD GARDNER

HAPPY 60TH ANNIVERSARY! Marlyn and Bernard Gardner of Elmhurst will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on Wednesday, August 21st. They LIVE well, LAUGH often, and LOVE life, each other, their family and friends – and Courts Plus. Their motto is, “Time lies when you’re having fun!”

The village of La Grange gave the La Grange Theatre owners $1 million a few years ago. Why can’t they gave $1 million to the YMCA, so they can build their own facility at the Ogden Avenue and La Grange Road location? Only seems fair.

Freshii 3021Butterield Road, Oak Brook 630-990-7446

On the recent bicycle race in Elmhurst: Possibly I missed something, and was not aware, but it seemed like the timeframe for that during the day on a weekday could be better planned. I think I made about three different attempts to try to get to the library and streets were shut down. I know it was the first time they ever did this, but my opinion and suggestion, would be maybe to try it on a Sunday or Saturday morning early in the morning before businesses and things are open.

Attractive clothing For the woman who called asking where to find attractive clothing, try Dress Barn. Their clothes are suited more for the mature woman. They also have clothing in both misses and women’s size 16.

Against pony rides Hello, I’d like to sound off about the pony rides at the fairs in Berwyn. I want them to stop. PETA is trying to outlaw them. They are horrendous on the ponies, to go around in a circle in that heat, and they beat them with little switches. Please address this to the mayor to

stop the pony rides at the fairs. It is not fair for the little ponies. Thank you.

Missing coupons This message goes out to the person who took my coupon folder from the Jewel in Darien on Aug. 6. I hope you needed it just as much as I did, and that you will find work, and I will be employed soon also. You desperately needed the coupons that I had even though I did have my name and address and phone number in there and an indication that I was out of work, and I really would have appreciated it if somebody would have turned it in it. I had quite a bad day that day, and that just kind of topped it off there.

Train worries Some senior residents of Downers Grove are old enough to recall the train derailment that totaled the Main Street station. Fortunately, it didn’t involve the long chains of tank cars full of flammable materials that are common today. There must be some regulation that is being ignored. God forbid that a derailment of a string of dozens of tankers would happen, spreading an inferno for blocks of homes north and south of the tracks. Why can’t the strings of tank cars be interrupted with strings of non-flammable box cars, or other cargo cars? At least then, a partial derailment might involve fewer flammable cars.

Continued from page 12 Fortunately for the citizens of DuPage County, Representative Ron Sandack enthusiastically signed-on as Chief Co-Sponsor and worked tirelessly to ensure the bill’s passage. Previously, as mayor of Downers Grove, Ron Sandack was the only mayor to express support for the last major initiative I sponsored in Springfield – the reform of the DuPage Water Commission and the repeal of the commission’s quarter cent sales tax (in 2016) that will save DuPage County taxpayers tens of millions of dollars annually. During his brief tenure in Springfield, Representative Sandack has focused on making government more accountable and transparent to voters and has set an example as a public servant by declining state health insurance and legislator pension benefits. Ask a Pro Q:

I have had an ongoing sewer issue for the past several years. he culprit is tree roots and I have been told by a number of plumbing and sewer outits that the solution is to replace it. Of course my sewer line travels beneath my relatively new landscaped yard and also the front walkway and I’ve been putting of this project. I have done some poking around and discovered that an alternative to digging would be to insert a liner so the tree roots don’t grow back. Is this a viable solution?

Sewer lining is an excellent solution. Provided that the existing line doesn’t have signiicant shits, separations, or misalignments that would impede the insertion of a liner, “trenchless” as it is commonly referred to, may very well be the answer for you. To ind out if your line is a candidate, you will need a clear picture of your entire line so the line may be inspected for pipe integrity. In the case where tree roots are present, a clear Mike Borowski visual on the camera will typically irst require a thorough cleaning of the entire line. If it is Vice President determined your sewer is a candidate for a lining, then you can decide on whether to reline just the problematic area(s) where the roots are causing the backups, or you may opt to line the entire sewer. he liner is made up of a felt “sock” permeated with a resin and an inner bladder that will allow the liner to be inlated with air during installation. Once the prepared liner is inserted into your sewer line, the liner gets inlated so it presses tightly against the inner wall of your existing sewer until the (630) 225-7060 resin is cured in place. Once the resin has cured, the bladder is removed and www.precisiontoday.com you are let with a seamless pipe inside of a pipe, prohibiting the roots from obstructing your sewer line. To ind out if you’re a candidate for this solution, call your trusted and licensed plumbing professional for an assessment.

A splendid taste of East Asia at Thipi Thai GLEN ELLYN – There’s nothing quite like the mix of sweet and savory flavors that you get from Thai food. Spiciness is a hallmark of many forms of Asian cuisine, and you’ll get that from Thai food, too. But the combination of opposing flavors sets Thai food apart. As a longtime fan of the cuisine, I had high hopes when I stopped by Thipi Thai in Glen Ellyn on a recent weeknight. And my dining companion, even more of an aficionado, was nearly chomping at the bit with hunger. Fortunately, we were not disappointed. From the enchanting decor to the delightful dishes, we were in for a terrifically memorable meal. Without hesitation, we placed our drink orders as soon as we saw the menu – we never pass up a chance to get Thai iced tea. It’s a strongly brewed iced tea with sugar and condensed milk. The milk and the sugar complement the bitterness of the tea rather than masking it, making for a sensation that engages your taste buds. For appetizers, I opted for the shumai steamed crabmeat dumplings served with soy sesame vinaigrette for dipping. It’s a common order for me, and Thipi Thai’s version was just right. My companion went for the coconut shrimp, which came with a pineapple mango sauce. “Perfectly sweet and tangy,” my dining companion said. On to the entrees. We’re both big fans of pad woonsen, which is what my companion ordered, but I thought I’d try something different and selected the orange beef. I’m only moderately tolerant of spicy food, but the menu showed just one pepper next to my choice – the scale appears to go up to three for items such as kung pao noodle chicken. One particularly spicy pepper caught me by sur-

Pad woonsen chicken can be flavorless at a lesser restaurant, but that’s not a problem at Thipi Thai.

The coconut shrimp are plenty tasty, but it’s the pineapple mango sauce that really seals the deal. Suburban Life Media photos

prise, but otherwise it was just right, with the pineapple and mandarin orange slices providing the perfect contrast to the peppers and beef. I should have saved some to bring home, however,

because I left myself without any room for dessert. I probably would have chosen the “chocolate pyramid” – chocolate mousse with sauteed bananas over a rum sauce. I requested a few bites of my companion’s pad woonsen with chicken, and very much enjoyed the mix of cellophane noodles (I’ve seen them referred to as glass noodles elsewhere), chicken, egg and vegetables in a brown

In order to learn how to tackle you have to tackle.” The general consensus among coaches was that no one argued with the concept behind the new rules. Safety is the priority. However, the complaints came in smaller nit-picks over how the changes were implemented. “You’re going to find out what happens because of the limited contact and practice time,” Glenbard East coach John Walters said. “It’s going to be a trial and error thing, but player safety is of the utmost concern. If this is going to eliminate potential dehydration and heat exhaustion, I’m all for it. It’s one of those things where you’re going to have to take a wait and see stance.”

Montini quarterback Chuck Norgle throws a pass during the Red Grange Classic 7-on-7 Tournament earlier this summer. The Broncos and other high school teams have to follow new practice guidelines in the preseason.

Fall sports officially began practicing on Wednesday, but football teams are being forced to work a little bit differently starting this year. New practice rules set by the IHSA have altered the way coaching staffs are allowed to operate summer practices that take place before school hours return. Some schools, like York, IC Catholic and Montini, shifted to normal practice hours this week as the start of the football preseason coincided with school starting, so the limitations on early practices only had a minimal impact. Others will be limited for a little more than a week. The two topics that most coaches brought up were that three-hour practices put an emphasis on efficiency, and that prohibiting teams from tackling until closer to the first game could cause problems. “You really have to plan your practices to hit all three areas,” Montini coach Chris Andriano said. “In the preseason that’s hard to do. We’re going to have to be very organized and very smart.” Andriano used to have Montini run separate practices for offense, defense and special teams. He believes the limited practice time will impact special teams the most. York coach Steve Nye mentioned that most of the base offensive and defensive concepts were worked on during summer practices. It’s the blitz packages and other more intricate things that will get worked on now. The limited practice time and tackling time makes that tougher. It also makes it tougher on the younger levels, where players are still learning the basics of tackling. “I think it’s really difficult for freshmen to be able to get a team prepared to play in two and a half weeks when they really can’t hit until 10 days before the first game,” Nye said. “They haven’t really done any tackling. D’Ambrose delivers for Penguins AT grad guides turnaround for Youngstown State volleyball By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – After playing for a powerhouse volleyball club and a competitive high school program, Casey D’Ambrose experienced something new during her first two years at Youngstown State: losing. The Penguins went 2-27 during D’Ambrose’s freshman season and were 5-24 the year after. The Addison Trail grad is a product of the prestigious Sports Performance club and was used to winning in her youth volleyball career. Last year things got much better for the Penguins. They went 15-14, the best season the program had in 13 years, and D’Ambrose was right at the heart of it as the team’s setter. “When I first got to campus they weren’t really any expectations,” D’Ambrose said. “I think it’s just a really different mindset. Now everybody wants the same thing. We have the same goal and we have a great support system. “When I committed here it was a rebuilding year. We’ve just been rebuilding the program for the past four years and it’s been a great experience.” D’Ambrose was the only player on the team to play in all 112 sets last year and with a year to go has the seventh-most career assists in the program’s history with 1,699. She played as a defensive specialist as a freshman and took over as starting setter as a sophomore. Coach Mark Hardaway helped guide the Penguins’ improvement last year in his first year in charge. That team had just one senior so D’Ambrose’s expectations are even higher this season. “I think we have a really strong team right now,” D’Ambrose said. “We have all of our starters coming back. We have a very large senior class and we bonded so well. I think last year we just came out and were ready to make a change.” The change has lifted spir-

Casey D’Ambrose looks to continue Youngstown State’s turnaround during her senior season this fall.

Casey D’Ambrose’s 2012 stats Assists: 736 (team-high) Aces: 23 (team-high) Kills: 23 its throughout the program and D’Ambrose has emerged as one of the leaders of the

team. As the starting setter, D’Ambrose has to keep the team organized and on task. She revels in the responsibility. “I love being able to run the offense,” D’Ambrose said. “I love being able to trick the other team with the plays we run. It’s a really cool experience with how we run the court.” The senior setter, who

stayed on campus in the summer to train, started volleyball at a young age and said she didn’t have much choice of position once she realized she wouldn’t be tall enough to be a hitter. The 5-foot-9 D’Ambrose has grown into the position ever since. Being a setter allowed her to share an extra connection with her older sister, Dani,

who played at Northern Illinois. When Casey was a freshman at Addison Trail she was able to set Dani, who was a senior hitter that year. For all of Casey’s volleyball accomplishments, that still ranks highly. “I loved being able to play with my sister,” she said. “I started on varsity as a freshman and I was able to set Dani.”

Heading into his sophomore season, Vincent Beltrano will be looking to build on Brendan Shannon was Butler’s top receiver last season and will look to replicate that showing his fantastic freshman campaign at the University of Chicago. as a senior this fall.

8COLLEGE NOTES

Standout rookie Beltrano back for more After winning University Athletics Association Rookie of the Year, University of Chicago cornerback Vincent Beltrano (Addison Trail) will have high expectations this fall as a sophomore. Beltrano picked off a team-high three passes, made 44 tackles and forced a fumble, and was named second team All-UAA.

Blazing to college soccer Four Addison Trail graduates are looking to find time as freshmen on college soccer teams. Jorge Leyva and Edwin Regalado will continue their careers at Concordia. On the women’s side, Tonia Parisi

will be a redshirt freshman at Morehead State and Devin Fruzyna will be looking to debut for Aurora University.

Midfield regular A year after earning a consistent spot in the Benedictine starting lineup, Julio Lopez (Addison Trail) will be one of the leaders for the Benedictine University men’s soccer. Lopez played in all 17 matches for the Eagles as a junior midfielder last year. He started 13 matches with one goal and two assists.

Star scorer Carmelo DiFranco (Addison Trail) was an efficient scorer for Dominican men’s soccer last season. DiFranco didn’t

start any matches but appeared 11 times as a substitute, and managed to score six goals and create four assists. The Stars had a fantastic season with an 18-3-1 record and a Northern Athletic Conference title. DiFranco, now a junior, will hope to prove he can consistently score as a starter as well.

From Blazers to Vikings A pair of Addison Trail graduates are continuing their athletic careers at Augustana. Jose Martinez will be a sophomore cross country runner. Martinez ran in four races as a freshman. Katie Keller will be a junior middle blocker for the Vikings’ women’s volleyball team. In her first two years on campus Keller

has seen regular playing time and will be looking to become a key contributor this season.

CCIW runners Four Willowbrook grads return as runners for College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin cross country teams this fall. Isaac Trostle (Lombard) will be a senior at Augustana. Elizabeth Lundine (Villa Park), who was 22nd in the CCIW meet, heads into her junior year with the Vikings. David Schouson (Lombard) will be a sophomore at Elmhurst College and Rachel Gibson (Lombard) will be a senior for the Bluejays.

Pioneering Bulldog Brendan Shannon (Montini,

Lombard) will have a lot to build on this fall after producing a breakout season for Butler football last year. As a junior wide receiver he hauled in team-highs in receptions (62), receiving yards (864) and touchdown receptions (8). His accomplishments earned him both Academic All-Pioneer League Second Team and All-Pioneer League Second Team. Shannon, a redshirt senior, plays on the Bulldogs with fellow Montini grads Zach Taylor, a redshirt sophomore offensive lineman from Clarendon Hills, and Matthew Kersten, a redshirt sophomore kicker from Naperville.
